Le 19 août 1913, le jeune aviateur français Adolphe Pégoud (1889-1915) réussit le premier saut en parachute en France, abandonnant alors son avion, un Blériot XI, sacrifié pour l'occasion...
Un an plus tôt, l'américain Albert Berry effectuait le premier saut en parachute depuis un avion volant au-dessus de la ville de Saint-Louis.
Pour commémorer le 100ème anniversaire du saut d'Adolphe Pégoud, la poste française a émis, le 14 juin 2013, un nouveau timbre spécial dans sa collection "Poste aérienne".

A year earlier, the American Albert Berry made the first parachute jump from an airplane flying over the city of St. Louis.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Adolphe Pégoud's jump, the French Post issued on June 14, 2013, a new special stamp in his "Airmail" ("Poste aérienne") collection.
I was lucky to receive the FDC below with a postmark (designed by Claude Perchat) of June 13, 2013 from Paris ("Carré d'Encre"). Thank you very much Joël :-)
Ce timbre (2,55€), créé par Jame's Prunier (avec le portrait de Pégoud gravé par Marie-Noëlle Goffin à partir d'une photographie du musée de l'air et de l'espace) a été émis en feuille de 40 timbres (tirage : 1500000) et en feuillet de 10 timbres (tirage : 45000).
La prévente de ce timbre a également eu lieu le 13 juin 2013 dans les villes de Montferrat (Isère), son lieu de naissance, et de Saint-Pierre (Réunion).
Pour la petite histoire, Adolphe Pégoud eu l'idée d'effectuer les premiers loopings et de voler la tête en bas après avoir observer son avion Blériot XI accomplir des arabesques dans le ciel juste après son saut en parachute !
Il devint ainsi célèbre dans toute l'Europe mais n'en profita pas longtemps puisqu'il sera abattu en plein vol deux ans plus tard pendant la 1ère guerre mondiale...
That stamp (€ 2.55), designed by Jame's Prunier (with a Pégoud's portrait engraved by Marie-Noëlle Goffin from a photograph of the French Museum of Air and Space) was issued in a sheet of 40 stamps (print run : 1.5 million) and in a mini-sheet of 10 stamps (print run : 45,000).
The preview sale of that stamp took also place on June 13, 2013 in the cities of Montferrat (Isère), his birthplace, and Saint-Pierre (Réunion island).
For the anecdote, Adolphe Pégoud had the idea to make the first loops and to fly upside down after watching his Bleriot XI aircraft performing arabesques in the sky just after his parachute jump !
He became famous throughout Europe but did not profit long as he was shot in flight two years later during the first world war...
