On May 1, 2004, 10 new countries (Slovakia, Malta, Latvia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania and Poland) officially became members of the European Union.
To celebrate this historic event that allowed the reunification of the European people, divided for half a century by the Iron Curtain and the Cold War, 9 of these countries (all except Poland) decided to issue on May 1, 2004, a joint stamp entitled "United Europe" with an illustration designed by Jean-Pierre Mizzi of the Maltese Post.
Each country issued this stamp with the flag of the concerned country on the bottom left and the nine other flags in the middle of the 12 European stars. To note that each time it's the flag of Malta which takes the place, in the middle, of the flag of the country issuing the stamp !

Such as the Slovak Post for example, the Czech Post released this stamp in a sheet of 10 stamps with, in the margins to the right and left, the names of the 10 EU new member states (in English).
Six stamps of this sheet (with margins) were used to frank the cover above, sent from Prague by registered mail on November 11, 2015. Thank you very much Bret !
To note that Poland chose to issue a different commemorative stamp, with an attached vignette.
I will write soon about the stamp above to the left (13 CZK) issued on November 11, 2015 on the occasion of 100 years of the birth of Jan Opletal, a student murdered in 1939 during a protest against the occupation of the country by Nazi Germany.
I've already mentioned on this blog the other two stamps above : 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille (issued on January 2, 2009) and flag (issued on October 14, 2015).

Bret was kind enough to also send me the two philatelic items above and below.
The numbered commemorative sheet above (print run : 2,700, numbered from 0127801 to 0130500, sale price : 30 CZK) was put into circulation on October 31, 2015 to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Association of engineers and architects ("Spolek Inženýrů a Architektů" or SIA in Czech).
The special postmark from Prague above, including the mention "SIA", was also issued to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the revival of this association (25 let od obnovení činnosti Svazu inženýrů).
The stamp used here (12 CZK), issued on March 19, 2008, being part of the series "Beauties of our country", is devoted here to Ješted mountain (1012 m, northern Bohemia) and in particular to the building built in its top in 1973, consisting of a hotel and a TV broadcasting tower.

The envelope above was specially edited following the designation of the most beautiful FDC issued in 2014 (survey organized by the Czech Post, in collaboration with the magazine "Filatelie"), a first in the country !
This envelope had been put into circulation on September 3, 2014 on the occasion of the issue of the souvenir sheet dedicated to the protection of nature, to the flora and fauna of the Beskid moutains in particular.
The FDC above was issued especially for the stamp of this souvenir sheet depicting a brown bear (Ursus arctos).
The authors of the illustration at the left (Libuše and Jaromír Knotek) as well as the engraver (Martin Srb) have signed at the lower right on this FDC and have designed this other illustration (2 lizards) at the top right, replacing the stamp !

Fourth centenary of the death of El Greco in Spain

On June 19, 2014, the Spanish Post has commemorated the 400th anniversary of the death of the painter El Greco (1541-1614), considered as the founder of the Spanish painter school of the 16th century, by issuing a beautiful souvenir sheet, inspired by one of the major works exhibited at the El Greco Museum in Toledo : "View and Plan of Toledo" (1610).
I was very lucky to receive the official FDC regarding this numbered souvenir sheet (€ 2.00, print run : 300,000), with FDC cancelaltion from Toledo, sent on November 16, 2015 from Madrid. Thank you very much Luis !
The stamp, partially engraved, delimits a fragment of this painting, with the city of Toledo at the bottom and the Virgin presenting the chasuble to San Ildefonso in the sky.

To note that this sheet integrates an Augmented Reality (AR) technology which, using a smartphone, allows to view stamps devoted to El Greco and his painting in this case.
El Greco (Dominikos Theotokópoulos is his real name) began his apprenticeship as an icon painter in Crete, then a territory of the Republic of Venice where he settled in 1560.
He then rubs the great painters of the Italian Renaissance such as Titian, Tintoretto, Bassano or Veronese.
After Rome in 1570, El Greco settled in Spain, in Toledo, in 1577, where he lived and worked until his death in 1614.
It was during these Spanish years that he painted his greatest works : altarpieces for the monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo, "The Disrobing of Christ" for the Cathedral of Toledo as well as large paintings for churches and religious institutions and series of individual portraits.
The illustration on the left on this envelope also contained fragments of two other works of El Greco : "View of Toledo" (Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York) and "Baptism of Christ" (Prado Museum in Madrid).

UNPA : 70th anniversary of United Nations (office of Vienna)

I've already mentioned on this blog several letters franked with stamps dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (Moldova, Russia, Tunisia, Belarus, Algeria) and I'm happy to share this time with you this cover including 2 of the 12 stamps (4 for each of the three UN offices) issued on October 23, 2015 by the UNPA (United Nations Postal Administration) on the same topic.
This letter was sent on November 11, 2015 from the United Nations Office in Vienna with, at the bottom left, the UNPA special cachet issued during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.
This cachet features a maple leaf (Canada was the guest of honor) as well as the UN emblem and the logo of the CNEP (organizer of this stamp exhibition).
The official logo of this 70th anniversary of the United Nations is of course present at the bottom right on the stamps of this series (printed with a glossy varnish by Cartor Security Printing).

The UN office in Vienna has issued the two stamps above (€ 0.80 each) in a sheetlet (print run : 37,000) composed of 6 stamps (3 of each), another sheetlet having been issued including 6 € 1.70 stamps.
Each UN office also issued a souvenir sheet consisting of one stamp (€ 1.70 for the office of Vienna).
This series, designed from photographs by Marta McAdams (Poland) and Esther Nisanova (Russia), is featuring different places of the United Nations headquarters in New York (dating from 1952), after a restoration which was completed just in time for the celebration of this 70th anniversary.
Meeting rooms, less known than the General Assembly or the Security Council, are shown on the two stamps above : the Trusteeship Council (left) and the Economic and Social Council (right).
This room of the Trusteeship Council was provided by Denmark and this Council was established by the UN Charter in 1945 to supervise the administration of the 11 Trust Territories placed under the UN Trusteeship System at the time.
The room of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was provided by Sweden and this Council, established in 1946, is responsible for over 70% of human and financial resources of the entire UN system.

Christmas 2015 stamps from Poland

A short post to share with you this letter from Poland, sent on November 17, 2015 from the town of Tarnobrzeg, franked with the three stamps of the "Christmas" ("Boże Narodzenie") series issued one day earlier. Thank you very much Kazimierz !
Designed by Maciej Jędrysik, this series is featuring the origins of this Christian celebration associated to the birth of Jesus Christ.

A nativity scene is thus represented on the first stamp on the left (PLN 1.75, prinr run : 20,000,000), which took place in Bethlehem in a stable in the presence of Mary and Joseph.
The stamp in the middle (PLN 2.35, print run : 1,000,000) refers to the encounter between Mary and the angel Gabriel, sent by God to announce her that she would give birth to Jesus, son of God.
The last stamp on the right (PLN 5.20, print run : 1,000,000) shows the Three Wise Men with Mary, Joseph and Jesus, with their gifts, arrived in Bethlehem after following a shooting star in the sky.

Sepac 2015 stamp on cover from Monaco : culture !

After landscapes in 2007, 2009 and 2011, animals in 2013, flowers in 2014, some of the European postal administrations, members of the association Sepac (Small European Postal Administration Cooperation) have issued stamps this year devoted to the theme of culture.
As a reminder, there are currently 14 members (countries or territories) of this postal association and, to date, San Marino and Vatican City have never participated in these issues, characterized by the presence of the Sepac logo on stamps.

The Principality of Monaco is involved in these Sepac stamp issues since 2007 and has issued this year, on June 17, 2015, a stamp (€ 1.20) illustrating this theme of culture (a too large topic in my opinion, so Sepac stamps have not a homogeneous aspect...).
That stamp (print run : 50,000), designed by Claude Rosticher, is thus supposed to evoke both, arts, dance, theater and science !
It is that stamp which was used on the letter above, sent on November 4, 2015, with the hand postmark of the OETP. Thank you very much Roland !
The famous "Les Ballets de Monte Carlo" and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco (another stamp was issued this year to celebrate its 50 millionth visitor since 1910 !) are featured on that stamp, rather ugly I've to say...

Russia-Laos joint stamp issue : religious buildings

After North Korea, Azerbaijan and Mexico, the last joint stamp issue of 2015 involving the Russian Federation, is regarding Laos (Lao People's Democratic Republic), to mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
As it was the case for the two previous joint issues with Azerbaijan and Mexico, the Russian Post has issued these two stamps, on November 11, 2015, devoted to religious buildings of the two countries, in the same sheet consisting of 8 stamps (4 of each) and a central vignette mentioning this joint issue in Russian ("совместный выпуск") and Lao as well as the flags of the two countries.
A big thank you Yuri for this nice cover franked with these two stamps (+ central vignette), sent on November 16, 2015 from St. Petersburg !

This series (design : A. Povarihin, print run : 180,000), composed of self-adhesive stamps, is featuring two important religious buildings of the two countries : the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Nerl River in Bogolyubovo and the Pha That Luang in Vientiane (the capital of Laos).
The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, founded in 1165 (850 years ago) is a remarkable model of the architectural school of Vladimir-Suzdal and of the ancient Russian architecture, and is renowned for the harmony of its dimensions.
With 7 other civil or religious remarkable buildings (dating from the 12th and 13th century) located near these two cities of central Russia, this Church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
Pha That Luang is a Buddhist monument (a 35 meters high square stupa, completely gilded) located in Vientiane, dating from the 16th century, considered as the most sacred building in the country (a sacred relic of Buddha would be kept there).

New cover from Nagorno-Karabakh with a wrong stamp !

On September 2, 1996, the de facto Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh ("Artsakh" in Armenian) celebrated the 5th anniversary of its independence by issuing a series of three stamps and a souvenir sheet consisting of four stamps.
As a reminder, this territory, historically Armenian, was integrated to the Republic of Azerbaijan during the Soviet era before declaring its independence in 1991 after the breakup of the USSR.
An armed conflict followed between Azerbaijan and Armenia until 1992 causing many casualties. A cease-fire was reached on May 1994 but no permanent solution has been found so far...
This Republic, not recognized by the international community, is however issuing its own stamps including the mentions "Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh" and then "Republic of Mountainous Karabakh" (in Armenian and English).

The different stamps used on the letter above, sent on November 11, 2015 from Stepanakert, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, are part of this "5th Anniversary of Independence" set issued in 1996. Thank you very much Sergey !
The two stamps at the top (50 and 100 drams), with the national flag in the margins, are part of the series of 3 stamps and are respectively featuring the Monastery of Dadivank, built from the 9th century and deeply damaged during the war with Azerbaijan (restored in 2005) and the Parliament building in Stepanakert.
To note that this building is now the seat of the Presidency of the Republic, the National Assembly (33 members) having been transferred to a new building.
The third stamp, bottom left, is interesting because it is part of the souvenir sheet issued in a wrong version !

That stamp, depicting the coat of arms of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, a crowned white-headed eagle carrying the national flag and the monument "We Are Our Mountains" on its chest, was indeed issued in a first time in the souvenir sheet above.
However, the national flag, including diagonally, is featured in a wrong way !
This flag is derived from the flag of Armenia, with a white pattern added to the right (symbolizing the separation of Nagorno Karabakh from Armenia).

A second version of this souvenir sheet (above) has therefore been reissued with the flag in the right way this time, and therefore four different stamps !
Unfortunately I don't know the respective print runs of these two souvenir sheets, nor the exact date of issue of this second version above...

70th anniversary of United Nations in Algeria

After Moldova, Russia, Tunisia and Belarus, it is the turn of Algeria to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (UN) with a special stamp issued on October 24, 2015, 70 years to the day after the ratification in San Francisco of the Charter of the United Nations, on October 24, 1945, by the five permanent members of the Security Council and the majority of the 50 signatory countries.
Thank you very much Ahmed for this cover sent by registered mail on November 14, 2015 from the city of Oran, franked with that stamp (25 dinars) !

Like many other postal administrations, the Algerian Post chose to feature on that stamp the official logo of this UN 70th anniversary, the number "70" (with the United Nations emblem inside the "0") associated with the slogan "Strong UN. Better World.", in Arabic here.
Except for the term "Algérie", this stamp does not mention anything else in French, as it is nevertheless the case most of the time...
To note that Algeria is a member of the United Nations since October 8, 1962, a few months after its independence.

12 other identical stamps were used on the other side of this envelope above.
This definitive stamp (25 dinars, design : Ali Kerbouche), issued on January 4, 2015, depicts the Fort of Bordj El Kiffan (called "Fort-de-l'Eau" in French), a town situated in the east of the wilaya of Algiers.
The construction of this fort started in 1556 (completed in 1581) at the top of a rock under the reign of Mohamed Pasha Takarli, in order to better supervise the entrance to the Bay of Algiers and to prevent possible attempts of invasion.

FDC from Paris with "Roosters of France" stamp

On the occasion of the European Poultry exhibition organized in France, in Metz from November 13 to November 15, 2015, the French Post has put into circulation, in preview sale on November 13, 2015, a souvenir sheet (four € 0.68 stamps) devoted to French rooster's breeds.
Among these four stamps, the one depicting a Gallic rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus) was also issued in sheet of 42 stamps.
It is that stamp which appears on the first day cover below, with cancellations from Paris. Thank you very much Joël !
This postmark as well as the souvenir sheet (print run : 700,000) have been designed by the young illustrator Gabriella Barouch.

France has a wide variety of hens and roosters (43 breeds in total) and four roosters were therefore selected to appear on this souvenir sheet : Gallic rooster, Meuse cock (a recent breed from Lorraine, the region where took place this exhibition), Houdan cock (Paris region) and Marans cock (Charente-Maritime).
Gallic rooster is considered as one of the (unofficial) symbols of France, "gallus" meaning both Gallic and rooster.
This animal is often seen at the top of the bell towers or on many public buildings or war memorials throughout France.

Here is above this whole m/s, rather successful !
To note that this 28th European Poultry exhibition 2015 (6,000 exhibitors), organized every three years by the European Agreement Poultry and Cuniculture (founded in 1938, 29 member countries), took place this year in France only for the third time (after Paris in 1947 and Strasbourg in 1979).

Protection of birds and WWI in New Caledonia

The New Caledonian Ornithological Society (SCO) is celebrating this year the 50th anniversary of its creation and the Post and Telecommunications Office (OPT) of New Caledonia has issued, on August 5, 2015, a stamp on this theme.
It is that stamp (180 XPF, print run : 60,000), designed by Jean-Richard Lisiak, which appears on the top left on the letter below, sent on November 16, 2015 from Noumea.
To note, at the bottom left, the special cachet issued by the OPT during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris, featuring a maple leaf (Canada was the guest of honor) holding a stamp with the slogan "I love NC". This cachet also includes the word "Calédoscope", the name of the Philatelic Agency of New Caledonia.

The SCO, one of the oldest environmental protection associations of New Caledonia, is today a key player in the preservation and enhancement of the local ornithological heritage.
Among the 185 bird species found in New Caledonia, 23 are endemic, such as the goliath imperial pigeon (Ducula goliath) depicted on that stamp, the largest arboreal pigeon in the world, threatened with extinction.
This stamp was issued in sheet of 10 stamps with margins illustrated by 17 heads of birds, such as cagou, the bird symbol of the island, above.
The three se-tenant stamps above (design : Roberto Lunardo, print run : 30,000), issued on June 5, 2015, are commemorating the 100 years of the enlistment of New Caledonian in the Great War.

This triptych features, from left to right, the boarding of the first New Caledonian contingent (713 men) on April 23, 1915 aboard the "Sontay", the battles in which they were involved during the first World War (Northern, Verdun,  Somme fronts and the Chemin des Dames from 1917) and the return at home of the surviving soldiers aboard the ship "El Kantara" on May 10, 1919.
In total, 383 Kanak and 193 European Caledonian soldiers lost their lives during this global conflict.
To note also on these stamps the presence of two French military decorations : the Military Medal and the Croix de Guerre.
The special OPT's cachet issued during this "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris, clearer, was also applied to the other side of this envelope above.

"NOTOS 2015" special prepaid cover from Moldova

On the occasion of the International Philatelic Exhibition "NOTOS 2015" organized from 12 to 15 November 2015 in the Greek city of Peristeri (northwestern suburb of Athens), the Post of Moldova has released, on November 12, 2015, a special prepaid envelope.
Designed by Corina Levco, this envelope (print run : 5,000) includes a pre-printed round stamp (reminding a magnifying glass) at the domestic rate up to 20g (L 1.75) as well as an illustration showing several stamps issued in Moldova since 1992.
I was lucky enough to receive this envelope (thank you very much Nicolae !) with its associated FDC cancellation from Chișinău (MD-2012).
To note also this second special stamp-shaped postmark with a slogan stating Moldova's philatelists participation in this exhibition "NOTOS 2015".

The Republic of Moldova was part of the 20 countries of Southern Europe (+ Egypt) to benefit from privileged conditions to compete at this philatelic exhibition, with competitions having mainly for themes the European south ("notos" means "south" in Greek) and philatelic literature.
The list of these 21 countries (including France) is inscribed at the bottom left on this envelope.
To note the controversial statement (to the left) of the national association of stamp, maxicard and postcard collectors ("Asociaţia Filateliştilor, Maximafiliştilor şi Cartofiliştilor din Republica Moldova") while it exhibited a single book at this exhibition and only independent Moldovan philatelists participated in competitions (explaining why this second postmark above was issued).

In order to reach the applicable postal rate for a non-priority mail up to 20g sent to countries of Zone A (including France), i.e. L 9.50 currently, Nicolae added three other stamps on the back of this envelope above.
I've already mentioned on this blog the stamp used here, in particular this beautiful Bohemian waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus) on the L 5.75 stamp, being part of a series of 4 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet, issued on September 25, 2015, devoted to different species of birds from regions of Moldova.
The other two identical stamps (L 1.00) are part of the definitive series of 6 stamps, issued on March 7, 2015, dedicated to the coats of arms of cities of Moldova, the city of Ungheni here.
Finally, to note that the Greek Post has issued on November 4, 2015, a series of two stamps devoted to this international stamp exhibition "NOTOS 2015".

Culture, sport and religion stamps on new Icelandic cover

Happy to share with you this new interesting letter from Iceland, sent from Reykjavik on November 25, 2015, franked with different stamps issued in the first half of 2015, including the Sepac ("Small European Postal Administration Cooperation") stamp, issued on February 19, 2015 and devoted to the music festival "Iceland Airwaves", about which I've already spoken on this blog.
The stamp on the bottom left (B50g domestic rate, 137 ISK - print run : 80,000), issued on April 30, 2015, designed by Oscar Bjarnason, commemorates the 200th anniversary of the creation of the Icelandic Bible Society.
Founded during a synod in Reykjavik on July 10, 1815, this association (the oldest of the country) has for mission the publishing and the diffusion of the Bible as well as providing guidelines for reading it.

The other two self-adhesive stamps at the top right are devoted to sport, in particular bicycle with this round stamp, issued on February 19, 2015, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of cycling in Iceland.
That stamp (B50g domestic rate, 137 ISK - print run : 80,000), designed by Hany Hadaya, shows a rear wheel of a bicycle used today, with a cycle path in the Icelandic capital in the background.
The first bicycles known to have been imported to Iceland were indeed seen in 1890.
The last stamp (50g to Europe rate, 180 ISK - print run : 80,000), issued on April 30, 2015, is devoted to the 16th edition of the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE), held in Iceland from 1 to 6 June 2015.
That stamp, designed by Elsa Nielsen, shows the 11 pictograms of the sports at the program of these games, as well as the logo of this competition, symbolizing Icelandic nature.
These games, held every two years since 1985, are a sports competition between the 9 European countries with a population under 1 million (Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro and San Marino).
At home, Iceland finished at the first rank of these games with 115 medals (38 in gold) ahead of Luxembourg and Cyprus.

"Posts during wars" exhibition at the Communication Museum in Riquewihr

Until December 31, 2015, the Alsace 's Museum of Communication of Riquewihr (Haut-Rhin) hosts an exhibition entitled "The Posts during wars - Illustrated letters" showing many examples of correspondences sent in war times, when often the means of transmission did not function normally...
This exhibition is organized as part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the World War I, a war having seen unprecedented postal activities (5,000,000 letters or postcards were sent daily by French soldiers from the front in 1915).

This exhibition allows the public some other means of communication used by postal operators in wartime (in France and Germany mainly) such as mounted balloons or the famous "Boules de Moulins" during the war of 1870, mobile wireless lines during WWI or the use of postal service as means of propaganda or resistance during the 2nd World war.
The Museum of Communication of Riquewihr has put into circulation a special cancellation dedicated to this exhibition, including some elements of the poster (a letter, a French Adrian helmet used by soldiers in 1915 and a German spiked helmet).
A big thank you Axel for this nice cover above cancelled with this postmark on November 13, 2015, franked with the "general mobilization in 1914" stamp issued on August 2, 2014 !

70th anniversary of United Nations in Belarus

After Moldova, Russia and Tunisia, it is the turn of the Republic of Belarus to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations with a special stamp issued on August 11 2015.
Thank you very much Alexander for this cover sent on November 18, 2015 from Minsk, the capital, franked with two se-tenant copies of that stamp (permanent rate "H" corresponding to the surface tariff of a letter up to 20g abroad, BYR 10,500 currently) !
To note the special postmark of the Minsk central post office (illustrated by a part of the facade of this building constructed between 1949 and 1953).
That stamp (print run : 60,000), designed by Tatyana Kuznetsova, was issued in a sheetlet of 6 stamps and all mentions included on the stamp printed with a slight embossment.

The official logo of this 70th anniversary of the United Nations, the number "70" (with the emblem of the United Nations within the "0") accompanied by the slogan "Strong UN. Better World." (in English here), was also printed with a selective mat varnishing.
I surprisingly found that Belarus, an independent state since 1991 after the breakup of USSR, is nevertheless one of the 51 signatory countries of the UN Charter, on October 24, 1945 in San Francisco !
Belarus is a founding member of the United Nations, without being an independent country at that time...
This decision was taken following negotiations between American and Soviet at the end of the 2nd World War and Belarus, such as Ukraine, had thus one vote in the UN General Assembly (in addition to USSR vote), a sort of reward for outstanding war effort and struggle of the Belarusian people against Nazi Germany...

A round stamp for the UN Conference on Climate Change 2015 in Paris

From 30 November to 11 December 2015 is organized in Paris Le Bourget, the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21).
This Framework Convention, signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, is a crucial step in international climate negotiations, officially recognizing the existence of climate change and human responsibility in this phenomenon.
One of the objectives of this Convention is to stabilize atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse effect gases at a level that would prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system...

The 195 states parties (+ EU) having ratified this United Nations Framework Convention currently met in Paris to find an agreement to limit this global warming to 2 degrees by 2100.
The French Post released on November 24, 2015 a special round-shaped stamp, devoted to this COP21 in Paris.
The preview sale of that stamp ("World 20g", currently € 1.20 - print run : 1,000,020) was held in Paris (Carré d'Encre) and Saint-Etienne (Loire).
A big thank you Jean-Claude and Joël for these two First Day Covers above and below regarding that stamp, with respective postmarks (COP21's logo) from Saint-Etienne and Paris !

That stamp was selected (jury + public vote) following a competition organized by La Poste with students of the School of Art and Design of Saint-Etienne.
This stamp, designed by Noémie Auzet (22 years old), rather dull imho (a nascent plant with Eiffel Tower-shaped roots), round to the image of the planet and showing the commitment of France to fight against global warming, was unveiled on September 10, 2015 by the French President of the Republic.
To everyone's surprise, a similar stamp was issued the same day by UNPA (New York office), the other two offices (Geneva and Vienna) having issued two different round stamps reproducing designs of some of the other 4 finalists of that same competition (designed respectively by students Charles Haumont and Nolwenn Le Nir).

10 years of Prince Albert II's reign in Monaco

On July 11, 2015, the OETP of Monaco has released a special souvenir sheet dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the accession of Prince Albert II to the throne of the Principality (on April 6, 2005 exactly even if the advent of the Prince is celebrated on July 12, 2005, after the official mourning period).
Albert II (born in 1958) then became the 14th Prince of Monaco since 1612 after the death of his father, Prince Rainier III.
It is that souvenir sheet (print run : 50,000) composed of 3 stamps (€ 1.00 each), designed by Thierry Mordant, which was used on the letter below, sent on November 18, 2015 from Monte Carlo.

To note that Thierry Mordant designed many stamps in the past for the Principality of Monaco (including the first definitive series with the effigy of Albert II in 2005) but also 7 stamps for France since 2002 (including the EUROPA stamp issued in 2012).
Albert II is only featured on the stamp to the left of this sheet, devoted to the theme of environmental protection, a theme dear to the Prince in particular through its Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, created in 2006 (this foundation's logo appears at the bottom right on that stamp).
100 years after Prince Albert I, Albert II visited the Arctic in 2006 to measure the effects of global warming...
The other two stamps show the princely palace (in the center, with the monogram of Albert II) as well as the port and the headquarters of the Yacht Club of Monaco, chaired by the Prince since 1984.

Icelandic Art - Part VI

Art islandais - 6ème partie

In 2010, the Icelandic Post started an interesting series (4 stamps issued each year) devoted to Icelandic art, through painting in particular.
After "Icelandic outsider art" in 2010, "The Pioneers" in 2011, "The second generation of Pioneers" in 2012, "The landscape redefined" in 2013, "Urban realities" in 2014, the theme for the new set issued on November 5, 2015 is "The tentative emergence of an Avant-Garde".
It is that series 2015, again designed by Hlynur Ólafsson (printed in France by Cartor Security Printing), which was used to frank the letter below sent on November 25, 2015 from Reykjavík.

Before the 1930s, Icelandic leaders encouraged the emergence of national pride movement, through art and painting in particular, while emphasizing the representations of landscapes.
With the economic prosperity of the country, local artists began to travel and to be influenced by new art movements such as Avant-Garde.
Some of them, like Finnur Jónsson (1892-1993), exhibited their works in Reykjavík and then received a very hostile reception...
A painting by Finnur Jónsson is reproduced on the "50g to Europe" stamp (print run : 100,000) above.
The other works in the spotlight here, reproduced respectively on the "domestic 250g" (print run : 100,000), "domestic 1500g" (print run : 100,000) and "domestic B50g" (print run : 120,000) stamps, were painted by Baldvín Björnsson (1879-1945), inspired by the spirit of German Expressionism, Jóhannes Kjarval (1885-1972), influenced by the dynamism of the Danish art scene and Ingibjörg Stein Bjarnason (1901-1977), an artist who was part of the so-called Cercle et Carré group in Paris in the early 1930s.

2015 EUROPA stamp from Slovakia

On May 5, 2015, the Slovak Post issued, as usual, a single EUROPA stamp to illustrate the theme of "old toys", chosen this year by the PostEurop organization.
It is that stamp (€ 0.90, print run : 200,000), designed by Marianna Žálec Varcholová and printed in sheet of 8 stamps, which was used to frank the letter below, sent on November 19, 2015 from Bratislava.
To note, at the bottom left, the special "Eiffel Tower" cachet issued by the Slovak Post during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne", organized in Paris from 5 to 8 November 2015.

That stamp is featuring a traditional wooden toy horse on wheels (or "bežka-horse"), typical of those made by the craftsmen of the Slovak region of Kyjatice.
With Kyjatice, the two other Slovak regions of Stará Turá and Kunešov are also specialized in manufacturing wooden toys of this kind, since the late 19th century and early 20th century.
These toys, made from beech wood only, are often finely decorated and carved (the background of the stamp and sheet's margins are including some of those colorful patterns).

"Music boxes" m/s from France

A short post to share with you this FDC about the souvenir sheet issued (on November 6, 2015) during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.
The theme of this new sheet is the "Music boxes", invented in Switzerland in the late 18th century by a Geneva watchmaker who had the idea to use a small cylinder for vibrating metal blades and produce musical sounds...
This souvenir sheet (print run : 700,000, mixed offset/intaglio printing), created and engraved by Elsa Catelin, consists of six stamps (€ 0.68 each) featuring 6 music boxes dating from the 18th and 19th century.
The FDC cancellation depicts a musical mechanism dating from 1789, also present at the top right on the souvenir sheet.

The different music boxes in the spotlight here are veritable jewels of technology and museum pieces for most of them, designed like automatons or composed of small figurines moving depending on the sound produced.
The most famous music box represented here is probably the "joueuse de tympanon" ("dulcimer player") dating from 1784 ("Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers" Museum in Paris) that belonged to Queen Marie Antoinette.
One of the greatest magicians of history, Robert-Houdin (1805-1871), was also a watchmaker and designed the music box "La leçon de chant" ("The singing lesson"), kept in the Paul Dupuy Museum in Toulouse.
The other four boxes on this sheet : Clock with organ and a concert of monkeys ("Pendule à orgues au concert de singes"), Magician-automaton ("Automate-magicien"), Dancer ("Danseuse") and Songbird ("Oiseau-chanteur").
