500 ans de la naissance de Calvin

500th anniversary of Calvin's birthday

As the postal administrations of France, Switzerland and Monaco, the German Post has commemorated the 500th anniversary of the birth of the French theologian, writer and reformer John Calvin (1509-1564) by issuing a stamp in his honor on July, 2 2009.
This € 0.70 stamp is included on the nice cover below mailed on the 1st day of issue from the town of Sassnitz, located on the island of Rügen in north-eastern Germany.
Thank you very much Igor :-)
Strangely, the Deutsche Post has allowed the application of a FDC cancellation corresponding to another German stamp issued on the same day, devoted to the 100th anniversary of the sea route by train ferry between the German city of Sassnitz and the Swedish city of Telleborg...

This stamp, issued in sheet of 10 stamps, is reproducing an engraved portrait by René Boyvin (Historic Museum of the Reformation in Geneva) depicting John Calvin at the age of 53, two years before his death.
It's worth noting that the Post of Monaco has chosen the same portrait for its stamp issued on May 14th 2009.
John Calvin, born 26 years after Luther, is most famous among the reformers who sought to theologically organize and structure the new church. He is often associated with Luther as the founder of Protestantism, however having given to the reformed religion an image of austerity and asceticism. On the literary, Calvin, writing or translating his works into french, is one of the first important writers in that language, which has undoubtedly helped him to spread his ideas widely...
He moved to Geneva from 1536 when the Swiss city adhered to Protestantism. He had a real moral authority on the city until his death.
