Faune africaine et BD en Pologne

African animals and Comic book in Poland

I found strange at first glance that the Polish Post could devote a series of stamps to African wildlife...
Through this impressive black and white series, the Polish Post has in fact wanted to pay tribute to one of the greatest and well-known Polish photographers, Tomasz Gudzowaty (born in 1971). Tomasz Gudzowaty has won many international Awards, in particular the World Press Photo for the photographs reproduced on two stamps below (PLN 1.55 and 2.40).
Thank you very much Kazimierz for this beautiful registered letter mailed on november 13, 2009 from the city of Tarnobrzeg :-)

The four photographs above were taken in 1998 and 1999 in Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana. The PLN 1.55 stamp reproduces an intense photo showing cheetahs with a small antelope, as part of a cycle entitled "First lesson of killing".The PLN 2.40 stamp (extracted from the cycle entitled "Paradise crossing") reproduces a photo taken during the annual crossing by gnus of the Mara river in the Masai national reserve in Kenya.
Thousands of wildebeest die during this crossing due to attacks by crocodiles or strong current, which does not prevent these animals to do this migration each year...
The black and white of these photographs recalls the beauty but also the brutality and the struggle for survival of african wildlife...
Two other stamps depicting zebras and elephants complete this nice set :-)

Kazimierz has also sent me on November 13, 2009 the 2nd cover above, with this time comics as topic.
The Polish Post has chosen to honor on this set of three stamps, the longest-published comic book in Poland and also one of the most popular, "Tytus, Romek and A'Tomek", created by Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski (born in 1923, known as "Papcio Chmiel") and published for the first time in 1952.
31 books have been published, telling the story of an anthropoid ape, Tytus de Zoo, accompanied by two boy scouts, the tall and thin Romek and the short and thickset A'Tomek. Papcio Chmiel also appears in some of these comic books, blending science-fiction, parody of established rules, satire and political themes.
I really like the original way (similar to photographs from police files) with which are depicted these three characters on the stamps above (top sheet containing 12 stamps in total), allowing to easily compare their respective sizes !
Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski has announced in 2009 that "Tytus, Romek and A'Tomek" will no longer be published, which may explain this tribute this year by the Polish Post...
