Le 5 février 2019, la poste de Jersey a mis en circulation une intéressante série (6 timbres + 1 bloc-feuillet) consacrée à Sir Walter Raleigh (1552 ou 1554-1618), écrivain, poète, courtisan et explorateur anglais.
Cette série, conçue par le studio de design "True North" et imprimée aux Pays-Bas par Joh. Enschedé Security Print, rappelle que Sir Walter Raleigh a également été gouverneur de Jersey entre 1600 et 1603.
Deux timbres de cette série figurent sur la lettre ci-dessous envoyée en avril 2019 (date non lisible) puisque le slogan à gauche sur cette oblitération mécanique évoque le "Bowel Cancer Awareness Month" ("Mois de sensibilisation au cancer de l'intestin"), organisé chaque année en avril au Royaume-Uni. On February 5, 2019, the Jersey Post put into circulation an interesting series (6 stamps + 1 miniature sheet) devoted to Sir Walter Raleigh (1552 or 1554-1618), an English writer, poet, courtier and explorer.
This series, created by the design studio "True North" and printed in the Netherlands by Joh. Enschedé Security Print, recalls that Sir Walter Raleigh was also Governor of Jersey between 1600 and 1603.
Two stamps of this series were used on the letter below sent in April 2019 (date not readable) since the slogan to the left on this mechanical cancellation evokes the "Bowel Cancer Awareness Month", organized every year in April in the United Kingdom. Thank you very much François!
Les différents timbres de cette série illustrent la carrière variée de Raleigh et en particulier les impacts positifs de son (court) mandat de gouverneur sur l'île de Jersey.
Figure importante de l'ère élisabéthaine, Sir Walter Raleigh a été gouverneur de Jersey de 1600 à 1603 et il semble qu'il ait été un gouverneur "sur le terrain", améliorant la milice et les défenses de l'île, encourageant le commerce et assistant aux audiences du tribunal.
La construction du château Elizabeth dans la baie de St Aubin, dans le sud de l'île, a commencé en 1594 et c'est Raleigh qui l'a appelée d'après la reine Elizabeth I, en utilisant les mots latins "Fort Isabella Bellissima" ("Elizabeth la plus belle").
Le timbre ci-dessus à droite (50p) évoque cette mention en latin.
Raleigh a également sauvé de la destruction l'emblématique Mont Orgueil, situé sur la côte est de Jersey.
L'autre timbre ci-dessus (65p) montre une main écrivant à la plume les mots "Soldat, marin, auteur, poète et aventurier" caractérisant Raleigh.
Sous le roi Jacques Ier, il perdit tout son crédit et fut accusé d'avoir pris part à une conspiration contre le roi, fut jeté dans une prison pendant 12 ans et fut condamné à mort et exécuté en 1618.
The different stamps in this series illustrate Raleigh's varied career and in particular the positive impacts of his (short) governorship on the island of Jersey.
A prominent figure in the Elizabethan era, Sir Walter Raleigh was Governor of Jersey from 1600 to 1603 and appears to have been a governor "on the ground", improving the island's militia and defenses, encouraging trade and attending sittings of the court.
The construction of Elizabeth Castle in St Aubin Bay, in the south of the island, started in 1594 and it was named after Queen Elizabeth I, using the Latin words "Fort Isabella Bellissima" ("Elizabeth the most beautiful").
The stamp above on the right (50p) evokes this mention in Latin.
Raleigh also saved from destruction the iconic Mont Orgueil, located on the east coast of Jersey.
The other stamp above (65p) shows a hand writing the words "Soldier, sailor, author, poet and adventurer" characterizing Raleigh.
Under King James I, he lost all his credit and was accused of taking part in a conspiracy against the king, was thrown into a prison for 12 years and was sentenced to death and executed in 1618.
