Près de 50 ans après un 1er timbre (émis en 1968), la poste française a mis en circulation, le 29 avril 2019 (vente générale), un timbre à nouveau consacré à la grotte de Lascaux, située sur la commune de Montignac (Dordogne), considérée comme l'une des plus importantes grottes ornées du Paléolithique par le nombre et la qualité esthétique de ses peintures et gravures (vieilles de 18000 à 17000 ans).
Ce splendide timbre (0,88€, tirage : 700050), conçu et gravé par Elsa Catelin, représente en particulier un des grands taureaux de la Rotonde (Salle des Taureaux) suivi par un cheval.
Ce timbre figure sur le pli Premier Jour ci-dessous, avec TAD de Paris du 26 avril 2019, représentant le taureau faisant normalement face à celui figurant sur le timbre. Merci beaucoup Joël !
Nearly 50 years after a first stamp (issued in 1968), the French Post has put into circulation, on April 29, 2019 (general sale), a stamp again devoted to the Lascaux Cave, located in the town of Montignac (Dordogne, southwestern France), considered as one of the most important decorated caves of the Paleolithic period, by the number and the aesthetic quality of its paintings and carvings (old from 18000 to 17000 years).
This splendid stamp (€ 0.88, print run: 700,050), designed and engraved by Elsa Catelin, represents in particular one of the great bulls of the Rotunda (Hall of the Bulls) followed by a horse.
This stamp is present on the First Day cover below, with cancellation from Paris of April 26, 2019, depicting the bull normally facing the other one on the stamp. Thank you very much Joël!
La prévente de ce timbre avait également lieu les 26 et 27 avril 2019 à Montignac, sur le site de "Lascaux 4", le centre international de l'art pariétal présentant un fac-similé intégral de toutes les parties ornées de cette grotte de Lascaux, inauguré en décembre 2016.
Découverte en 1940, cette grotte a en effet été fermée au public en 1963 suite à différentes dégradations (moisissures, tâches...) liées à la présence humaine dans cet espace fermé.
Joël a eu la bonne idée d'illustrer cette enveloppe avec le timbre émis en 1968, représentant une autre fresque de cette grotte de Lascaux, montrant une partie des vaches du Diverticule axial.
The preview sale of that stamp also took place on April 26 and 27, 2019 in Montignac, on the site of "Lascaux 4", the international center of the parietal art presenting an integral facsimile of all the decorated parts of this Lascaux Cave, inaugurated in December 2016.
Discovered in 1940, this cave was indeed closed to the public in 1963 following various degradations (molds, stains ...) related to the human presence in this closed space.
Joël had the good idea to illustrate this envelope with the stamp issued in 1968, representing another fresco of this Lascaux Cave, showing a part of the cows of the Axial Gallery.
La grotte de Lascaux, parfois surnommée la "chapelle Sixtine de l'art pariétal", fait partie des 15 sites préhistoriques et grottes ornées de la vallée de la Vézère, inscrits par l'UNESCO au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en 1979.
Le même jour, la poste française a mis en circulation un souvenir philatélique (tirage : 30000, prix de vente : 4€) incluant le feuillet gravé ci-dessus, avec ce même timbre en haut à gauche.
Ce feuillet représente un des 4 groupes de figures de la Nef, avec en particulier cette imposante "Vache noire".
The Lascaux Cave, sometimes nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of the parietal art", is one of 15 prehistoric sites and decorated caves of the Vézère Valley, inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
The same day, the French Post has put into circulation a "philatelic souvenir" (print run: 30,000, sale price: € 4.00) including the engraved leaflet above, with the same stamp on the top left.
This leaflet represents one of the four groups of figures of the Nave, with in particular this impressive "Great black cow".
