L'hirondelle rustique (Hirundo rustica), Suitsupääsuke en estonien, est l'oiseau national de l'Estonie depuis les années 1960 et une campagne de sensibilisation menée par la Société ornithologique estonienne ("Eesti Ornitoloogiaühing") dont le logo représente cet oiseau.
Chaque année depuis 1995, la Société ornithologique estonienne désigne un oiseau de l'année à protéger en particulier et l'hirondelle rustique a été choisie en 2000 et 2011 (un timbre avait été émis sur ce thème).
La poste estonienne a logiquement choisi cet oiseau pour figurer sur sa série EUROPA émise le 25 avril 2019, ayant pour thème cette année les oiseaux nationaux ("rahvuslinnud" en estonien).
The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica), Suitsupääsuke in Estonian, is the national bird of Estonia since the 1960s and an awareness campaign conducted by the Estonian Ornithological Society ("Eesti Ornitoloogiaühing") whose logo represents this bird.
Every year since 1995, the Estonian Ornithological Society has designated a bird of the year to be protected in particular, and the barn swallow was chosen in 2000 and 2011 (a stamp was issued on this theme).
The Estonian Post logically chose this bird to be featured on its EUROPA series issued on April 25, 2019, devoted this year to the theme of national birds ("rahvuslinnud" in Estonian).

Imprimés chacun en feuille de 10 timbres avec marges illustrées (exemples ci-dessus), ces 2 timbres (incluant une carte géographique de l'Estonie) représentent respectivement une hirondelle rustique en vol et un détail de la tête, marquée par une gorge et un haut du bec de couleur rouge brique.
Faisant partie des 400 espèces d'oiseaux recensées en Estonie (entre 100000 et 200000 couples), l'hirondelle rustique reste menacée par l'agriculture intensive et la destruction de sites de nidification (écuries, greniers, avant-toits de bâtiments).
Cet oiseau est également représenté sur le timbre EUROPA émis en Arménie, de façon stylisée sur le timbre EUROPA français et également dans les marges du bloc-feuillet EUROPA émis en Hongrie.

Printed in sheet of 10 stamps each with illustrated margins (examples above), these 2 stamps (including a map of Estonia) represent respectively a barn swallow in flight and a detail of the head, marked by a brick red throat and top of the beak.
As part of the 400 species of birds recorded in Estonia (between 100,000 and 200,000 pairs), the barn swallow remains threatened by intensive agriculture and the destruction of nesting sites (stables, attics, eaves of buildings).
This bird is also depicted on the EUROPA stamp issued in Armenia, stylized on the French EUROPA stamp and also present in the margins of the EUROPA souvenir sheet issued in Hungary.
