Roald Dahl, 2012 Olympic champion, UPU 100th anniversary stamps on cover from Great Britain

Of Norwegian origin, the renowned British writer and screenwriter Roald Dahl (1916-1990) began his career in children's literature in 1961 with "James and the Giant Peach," a story he created for his five children, to whom he told a new tale each night.
But it is surely with his book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" that you first heard of him, thanks to Tim Burton's film adaptation.
On January 10, 2012, the Royal Mail issued an interesting series (6 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) dedicated to various children's books by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake.
Two identical stamps (£0.76) from the souvenir sheet have been used in the lower right corner of the cover below, sent on January 22, 2026, from the town of Northwich.
These two stamps illustrate a scene from "The BFG" ("The Big Friendly Giant"), a novel written by Roald Dahl in 1982.
The novel tells the story of Sophie, an eight-year-old orphan girl, who is kidnapped one night by a giant. Far from eating children as she believed, the giant explains to her, speaking strangely, that he blows dreams into children's ears...

The two identical stamps in the upper right corner (£0.08, design: Rosalin Dease) are part of a series (four stamps) issued on June 12, 1974, commemorating the UPU's 100th anniversary and, in particular, the development of overseas postal services.
This stamp specifically depicts a blue postal van and a blue postbox used in the UK during the 1930s for airmail (a London Airmail postmark dated February 27, 1931, is reproduced on the stamp).
At the 2012 London Olympics, held on home soil, the British team won a record number of medals since the 1908 London Games, with a total of 65 medals, including 29 gold.
On August 2, 2012, the Royal Mail issued 29 stamps to commemorate these 29 gold medals, including one (1st Local) dedicated to kayak athlete Edward McKeever, Olympic champion in the K1 200m sprint, used in the upper left corner of the envelope above.
A final stamp (£0.02) of the Machin type (profile of Queen Elizabeth II), a self-adhesive version with a matrix code, part of a series (7 stamps) issued on April 4, 2022, was used.
The first stamps of this type (designed by Arnold Machin) were issued in 1967 and evolved until the Queen's death in 2022, notably with the addition of various security features.

"Bird Observatory" stamp on cover from Lundy (United Kingdom)

No philatelist can claim to have never heard of this British Lundy Island (located in the Bristol Channel), famous for its "local" stamps denominated in Puffin (the iconic bird of Lundy), considered as fancy vignettes and not taken into account in the franking of the letters sent from this island.
The story of Lundy's "local" stamps began with the dwindling population of the island and the lack of interest in the Royal Mail Post Office, which closed in 1927.
Martin C. Harman, the owner of the island, decided to issue private stamps from 1929 to cover the cost of transporting mail between the island and United Kingdom.
This private postal service, still in operation today, is considered as the oldest in the world.
For a long time (until 1962 for postcards, 1992 for letters), local Lundy stamps could not be affixed to postal items on the address side. Since 1929, more than 350 stamps have been issued by Lundy Island and approximately 40,000 letters are sent each year from Lundy.

An example of recent mail with the cover above, including a local Lundy stamp in the bottom left corner, sent on July 3, 2025. Thank you very much, Roland!
To note this blue meter cancellation of the Royal Mail (£3.20 - mail up to 20g within Europe) applied on July 4, 2025, including an illustration showing the old Lundy lighthouse.

The Lundy stamp above ("Rest of the World" rate - 265 puffin = £2.65) is part of a lovely series (5 stamps, designed by Sharon Read, printed in France by Cartor) issued on March 11, 2025, commemorating Lundy, a true haven for ground-nesting and migratory birds (home to the third largest seabird colony nesting on the cliffs of British waters), which rejoined the British Bird Observatory Network in 2023.
As an active member, Lundy is committed to the long-term study of bird populations and migration. A Bird Warden conducts the daily census, coordinates ornithological research, ringing and education.
Each stamp in this series features the logo (a puffin in flight) of the Lundy Bird Observatory, like the one above, which depicts a razorbill (Alca torda) and a common guillemot (Uria aalge) on the left.

"Viking Britain" stamp set on cover from United Kingdom

The Vikings were present in the British Isles from the 8th to the 11th century. Their activities in this region ranged from peaceful trade to campaigns of territorial conquest and occasional incursions.
On June 8, 793, for the first time in Western Christianity, a venerable monastery was savagely pillaged by the Vikings. This was the monastery on the small coastal island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland, between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, the Royal Mail put into circulation, on February 20, 2024, an interesting series (8 stamps) illustrating artefacts dating from this period, discovered on different archaeological sites in the country.
The Jorvik Viking Centre, founded in 1984, is a museum and visitor attraction in York, dedicated to Viking life in the city during its time as the capital of the Viking Kingdom of Jórvík (866-954).

Designed by Studio Up and printed in France by Cartor Security Printers, these 8 stamps depict notable Viking objects with a map in the background showing the location of the site where they were discovered.
Two stamps from this set were used on the above cover sent on September 30, 2024 from Cambridge. Many thanks Josep!
The stamp on the left (£1.00) depicts a silver penannular brooch, part of the Penrith (Cumbria) hoard, now on display at the British Museum in London.
The penannular brooch, originally a common utilitarian fastening for clothing in Roman Britain, developed in the post-Roman period. Brooches, worn by both men and women, were made of precious metals and often decorated with gemstones. When the Vikings began to raid and colonise the British Isles, they began to wear these brooches, but now in plain silver.
The other stamp (£2.00) shows an antler comb and case, discovered during the excavations of Coppergate in York, carried out between 1976 and 1981. These excavations have uncovered new and exciting facts about York's thriving Viking trade, proving that the city was an important trading centre between its capture by the Vikings in 866 and the Norman conquest of 1066.

"Olympics from Beijing to London" joint set with the United Kingdom, on cover from China

On the occasion of the handover between the Mayor of Beijing and the Mayor of London (Boris Johnson) during the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on August 24, 2008, the postal administrations of China and the United Kingdom put into circulation a pretty joint series (4 stamps) dedicated to emblematic monuments and attractions of the two cities.
The Chinese version of this joint series (1.20 yuan for each stamp, design: Xiaoyong and David Geoff) was used on the cover below sent on April 1, 2024 from Beijing. Thank you very much Ruinan!
The stamp on the left is dedicated to The London Eye or Millennium Wheel, inaugurated on the occasion of the new millennium, 135 meters high, one of the most iconic landmark of London today. This impressive structure is made up of 32 glass cabins, each of which weighs 10 tonnes and can accommodate up to 25 people.

The next stamp shows the characteristic structure of the Beijing National Stadium, also called "Bird's Nest", built especially for the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This stadium is the first stadium to host the opening and closing ceremonies of summer games (in 2008) then winter games (in 2022).
The Tower of London, depicted on the 3rd stamp, is a historic fortress whose construction began towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. This stamp shows in particular the White Tower, the keep of the Tower of London, built by William the Conqueror at the end of the 11th century, and remodeled several times. The British Crown Jewels are on display there.
The last stamp is dedicated to one of the 4 corner towers of the Forbidden City in Beijing. These defense and observation towers were built in 1420, at the creation of the Forbidden City, then were rebuilt during the Qing dynasty (between 1644 and 1911).

To note that the Olympic rings are featured on each of these four joint stamps.

Tutankhamun and Entente Cordiale (joint stamp with France) on cover from United Kingdom

One of the great archaeological discoveries to date is undoubtedly the finding of the tomb of Tutankhamun (born around -1345, died around -1327), the eleventh pharaoh of the XVIIIth dynasty (New Empire).
After 5 years of research, it was discovered by chance on November 4, 1922 by Howard Carter
(1874-1939), British archaeologist and Egyptologist, who had the financial support of the wealthy English aristocrat Lord Carnarvon.
The four-chambered tomb contained an extensive collection of priceless artifacts.
The most famous find was undoubtedly the mummy's gold burial mask, but archaeologists also found a golden throne chair and a pure gold coffin.
On November 4, 2007, 85 years after the discovery of the tomb, his mummy was moved from its stone sarcophagus to a glass case.

The postal administrations of Hungary, France and Egypt put into circulation in 2022 stamps dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, which was also the case of the Royal Mail with a splendid series (8 stamps) issued on November 24, 2022 illustrating some of the iconic objects from this tomb, on display in the Grand Egyptian Museum.

One of these stamps (design: Andy Altmann based on photographs by Araldo de Luca) was used on this cover sent on October 17, 2023 from Aberdour, Scotland. Thank you very much David!
This stamp (£1.85) depicts a detail of the back of the royal throne, Tutankhamun being represented in the company of his wife Ankhesenamon. This golden throne is the most remarkable piece of furniture that has come down to us from ancient Egypt. It is made of wood, covered with gold leaf encrusted with precious stones, glass paste and earthenware.
David completed his franking with 2 stamps including one (7p) part of a series (6 stamps, design: David Gentleman) issued on November 23, 1977, illustrating the famous Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas", a recapitulation rhyme in which twelve are listed gifts that a person says he received from her lover during the twelve consecutive days of Christmas time, two turtle doves and three French hens here.
The 3rd stamp above (28p) is part of a joint series (2 stamps) with France, issued on April 6, 2004 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale of 1904.
On April 8, 1904, the Entente Cordiale between France and the United Kingdom was initialed in London (this expression originally described the good relations between Louis-Philippe I and Queen Victoria), settling colonial disputes and opening a new era and a rapprochement between the two countries.
This stamp reproduces a work entitled "Lace 1 (trial Proof)" (1968) by Terry Frost (1915-2003), one of the most famous English abstract painter and printmaker in the United Kingdom and one of the most influential of the late 20th century.

The head of the infant Tutankhamun emerging from a lotus flower (2nd), an evocation of the pharaoh's permanent regeneration, and a pendant representing a falcon holding in its claws the sign of eternity Shen and the sign of life Ankh (1st), are illustrated on these 2 stamps.
In Tutankhamun's golden coffin alone, 143 jewels buried in the strips of the shroud covered the mummy: flat gold gorgets, pectorals, pendants, bracelets, rings...
David completed his franking with 2 stamps, one of which (13p) was part of a series (4 stamps, design: Ronald Maddox) issued on March 1, 1978, dedicated to British architecture, to Hampton Court Palace (16th century) in London here, which was the favorite residence of King Henry VIII.
This series, issued for the first time in miniature sheet form, was issued on the occasion of the international stamp exhibition "London 1980".
The other stamp (7p) is part of a series (6 stamps, design: David Gentleman) issued on November 23, 1977, illustrating the famous Christmas carol "

Two of these stamps (design: Andy Altmann based on photographs by Araldo de Luca) were used on this cover sent on October 17, 2023 from Aberdour, Scotland. Thank you very much David!
An inlaid fan (2nd class) and the famous funerary mask of Tutankhamun in gold and semi-precious stones (1st class) are illustrated on these 2 stamps.
David completed his postage with 2 stamps including one (16p) part of the EUROPA series (4 stamps) issued on May 15, 1984. This stamp reproduces the common motif "Bridge" (by the Frenchman Jacky Larrivière) used that year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of CEPT.
The other stamp (4½P) is part of a series (4 stamps) issued on October 9, 1974 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who played a decisive role in the victory of the Allies during the Second World War.
Finally, to note this mechanical cancellation applied on October 18, 2023 by the Edinburgh mail center, with its slogan "Stamping out modern slavery" on the occasion of Anti-Slavery Day commemorated that day in the United Kingdom.

Local stamp "Niamh" on cover from the Island of Pabay, Scotland

Merci beaucoup Roland !
Since 1962, the small island of Pabay has put into circulation local stamps having for initial objective to cover transport costs between this island and the mainland (Scotland).
This uninhabited island is located off the Isle of Skye, the largest and northernmost island of the Inner Hebrides archipelago in Scotland (in the inland seas of the west coast of Scotland).
Among the themes represented on these stamps issued since 1962 (with mention "Isle of Pabay" or "Island of Pabay", with also "Local Mail to Skye" on the first stamps): local themes (fauna and flora), cats, dogs, Mexico City 1968 Olympics, British royal family ...
I was lucky enough to receive this special letter sent on March 23, 2021 from the Island of Pabay, including one of these local stamps. Thank you very much Roland!

This local stamp (£ 1.00), apparently issued in March 2004, is devoted to Irish Celtic mythology, in particular to the character of Niamh, the daughter of Manannan Mac Lir, a sovereign god of one aspect of the Celtic Otherworld, the Sidh.
Niamh reigns over Tír na nÓg ("Land of Eternal Youth"), one of the best known of the "Otherworlds" in Celtic mythology.
An official stamp (£ 1.70) has also been applied to this letter, with a nice cancellation from Glasgow, depicting the facade of the Town Hall ("Glasgow City Chambers") and its Victorian architecture (building built between 1882 and 1889).
This small definitive stamp is part of a new Royal Mail series (4 stamps) put into circulation in 2021, devoted to each of the British "countries", the thistle here (sculpted by Tim Chalk) for Scotland (the other 3 stamps evoking England, Wales and Northern Ireland).

"Palace of Westminster" miniature sheet on FDC from the United Kingdom

According to UNESCO which classified it, along with Westminster Abbey, in 1987 as a World Heritage Site, "the Palace of Westminster, rebuilt from 1840 on the site of important medieval remains, is a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture. The site, which also comprises the small medieval Church of Saint Margaret, built in Perpendicular Gothic style, and Westminster Abbey, where all the sovereigns since the 11th century have been crowned, is of great historic and symbolic significance".
Located on the north bank of the Thames river in central London, this huge palace is also referred to as the Houses of Parliament, serving as the meeting place for both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
With its Clock Tower and Big Ben bell, officially named "Elizabeth Tower" on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, the Palace of Westminster is undoubtedly one of the emblematic landmarks of the British capital.

In order to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of its reconstruction after the terrible fire of 1834, the Royal Mail put into circulation on July 30, 2020, a very nice series (6 stamps + 1 miniature sheet) dedicated to this Palace of Westminster.
Thank you very much David for sending this splendid official FDC regarding the miniature sheet of this series, composed of 4 stamps, with postmarks from London evoking one of the 4 faces of the clock of the Clock Tower!
Created by the design agency Steers McGillan Eves, these 4 stamps (1st Local - £ 0.76 and £ 1.63) are featuring different parts of the interior of the Palace of Westminster (from left to right): the Norman Porch, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, the St Stephen's Hall and the Royal Gallery.
The margins of this miniature sheet reproduce a sectional plan of the building (with the Clock Tower on the left and the Central Tower in the middle) dating from 1850, by the architect Sir Charles Barry who led its reconstruction between 1840 and 1860.

"End of WWII" miniature sheet on FDC from the United Kingdom

The act of capitulation and surrender of the German army was signed on May 7, 1945 in Reims in a room of the Technical and Modern College (headquarters of the Allied troops), almost ending the 2nd World War (Japan capitulated on August 14, 1945, after the terrible atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki).
This act in Reims, purely military, infuriated Stalin who wanted that Germany capitulated in Berlin, conquered by the Red Army. A second act was thus signed in Berlin on the night of 8 to 9 May 1945 ...
On May 8, 2020, the Royal Mail put into circulation a very nice series (8 stamps + 1 miniature sheet) dedicated to the end of this 2nd World War.
The miniature sheet (design: hat-trick design) is particularly focused on memorials honoring the soldiers and women who gave their lives to serve their country, as well as the victims of the Holocaust.

Thank you very much David for sending this splendid official FDC regarding the miniature sheet "In Remembrance" of this series, with "1939-1945" postmarks from London.
The 1st stamp (1st Local - £ 0.76) pays tribute to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis during the Shoah, through this "Hall of Names" at the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem.
The following stamp (£ 1.63) evokes the Plymouth Naval Memorial (1924, architect: Robert Lorimer) paying tribute to the members of the Royal Navy who died during the two world wars.
The stamp in the lower left (1st Local - £ 0.76) represents the Air Forces Memorial, located since 1953 in Runnymede (architect: Edward Maufe), paying tribute to the airmen of the British Empire air forces who died during the 2nd world war and who have no known grave.
The last stamp (£ 1.63) is dedicated to the Taukkyan war cemetery, located 25 km north of Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar (Burma).
This cemetery, established in 1951, mainly concerns the Allied soldiers of the British Commonwealth who died in combat in Burma during the 2nd World War.

"Birds of Prey" stamps 2019 on cover from United Kingdom

As in 2018, the Royal Mail decided not to put into circulation any EUROPA stamps in 2019 (theme: national birds) ...
Coincidentally, a splendid series (10 stamps) devoted to different species of birds of prey recorded in the United Kingdom, was however issued on March 4, 2019!
Two stamps ("1st" domestic tariff - £ 0.70) of this series were used on the letter below sent on May 17, 2019 from the city of Reading, Berkshire. Thank you very much Vera!
To note this mechanical cancellation applied the same day, with a slogan evoking the "Mental Health Awareness Week" organized this year in the United Kingdom by the Mental Health Foundation, from 13 to 19 May 2019.

The 10 stamps in this series, based on photographs by the famous British wildlife photographer Tim Flach, are featuring some of these raptors in flight (5 stamps) and close-ups of heads (5 stamps).
An example of each above with a common buzzard (Buteo buteo) on the left and a white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) on the right.
While the buzzard is a common bird in the country, the white-tailed eagle is currently considered extinct in England, is to be reintroduced on the Isle of Wight this summer in the hope of recovering the population.
Raptors, carnivores, are the only birds which catch and carry their food with their strong feet.

My first ever cover received from Lundy Island, UK !

An example of recent mail with this letter above, including 5 local Lundy stamps to the left, sent on November 13, 2017. Thank you very much Rune!
As it is the case between the end of October and the end of March, the transport of mail between Lundy and Hartland Point (Devon) is provided by an helicopter (7 minutes flight), what the cachet "Sent by helicopter" above is stating.
To note this blue meter cancellation of the Royal Mail (£ 1.07 while the price for a shipment up to 20g to Europe is £ 1.17?) applied on November 14, 2017, including an illustration showing the old Lundy lighthouse.
For a long time (until 1962 for postcards, 1992 for letters), local Lundy stamps could not be affixed to postal items on the address side...
Since 1929, more than 350 stamps have been issued by Lundy Island and approximately 40,000 letters are sent each year from Lundy.
The 5 stamps above (printed in France by Cartor) constitute the series "Lundy wildlife" issued on May 15, 2010, devoted to different mammals populating the island (rabbit, feral goats, Sika deers, Grey seals, Soay sheeps).

EUROPA 2017 (Windsor Castle) stamp on FDC from United Kingdom

After a break in 2016, the Royal Mail is back this year with a EUROPA stamp put into circulation on February 15, 2017 in a very nice set of 6 stamps devoted to the Windsor Castle (a souvenir sheet of 4 stamps showing the St George's Chapel was also issued).
This series consists of two horizontal bands of 3 stamps (1st Class - £ 0.64 and shipment up to 100g to Europe - £ 1.52) depicting different aspects of this castle, from outside and inside.
A big thank you David for this beautiful cover sent on the first day of issue from the post office of Windsor (the mention "Berks" on the postmark refers to the county of Berkshire) including this complete series, of which that EUROPA stamp at the top right ("The Norman Gate")!

Windsor Castle, one of the residences of the British royal family, is considered to be the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest continuously inhabited palace in Europe (built from the 11th century by William the Conqueror).
Windsor Castle today occupies a vast site of 52,000 m2 (Lower Ward, Middle Ward with the Round Tower, Upper Ward) and regroups more than 1,000 rooms.
The Norman Gate, featured on the EUROPA stamp, was built in the 14th century (during the reign of Edward III) and modified in the 19th century, to protect the western entrance of the Upper Ward of the castle.
The south wing of the castle with the "Long Walk", about 5 km long, laid out by King Charles II at the end of the 17th century, and the imposing Round Tower (12th century) in the Middle Ward, are represented on the other two stamps above on this letter.

The other 3 stamps in this series are devoted to various rooms of this castle : St George's Hall (which was damaged during the terrible 1992 fire), The Queen's Ballroom and The Waterloo Chamber, a large room dating from 1830 and dedicated to the military defeat of the French Emperor Napoleon during the battle of the same name...
This room houses many portraits mostly painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830).
The Royal Mail's insert above was included in this envelope, with a view of the Green Drawing Room on the left, a room also affected by the 1992 fire.

Special Christmas Stanley Gibbons' handstamp on cover from London !

From November 14, 2016, the famous British philatelic publishing house Stanley Gibbons Ltd. released a special Christmas handstamp, via a mailbox located in the company's headquarters in London (399 Strand).
I admit that I had never been aware of this type of cancellation and I do not know if it has been put into circulation for several years or not ?
Founded in 1856, this house is well known for its auctions, its famed stamp catalogs, but it is also considered as the world's longest established rare stamp merchant.

I was surprised to receive the cover above sent from London on December 8, 2016, including this special Christmas handstamp. Thank you very much Johan !
This cancellation is simply composed of the name of this company, a Christmas tree, the mention "London" and the date of sending.
Johan used two 1st class stamps (standard domestic shipment up to 100g, currently £ 0.64) of the Machin series. I do not know their exact date of issue ?
This definitive series, which appeared in 1967, has evolved over the years with more and more elements avoiding counterfeiting or reuse, such as on the two examples above (printed with "ROYAL MAIL" waves in iridescent ink, elliptical slits...).

New Post & Go "Hibernating Animals" stamps - Royal Mail FDC

On November 14, 2016, the Royal Mail put into circulation a very nice new series of four Post & Go stamps, that is to say ATM stamps (appeared in 2008, first ones including pictorial designs introduced in 2010) delivered by about 700 machines spread over all the territory.
This new series is devoted to different hibernating animals, with illustrations by Christopher Wormell (born 1955), the famous British illustrator (mainly children's books), who designed for example the 3rd "100 years of the 1st World War" series this year for the Jersey Post.
A big thank you David for this beautiful official FDC below including these four Post & Go stamps, with "Hedgehog" cancellations from the village of Naphill (County of Buckinghamshire) !

This village is largely a site of special scientific interest, the designation of a protected area in UK, with its oak and beech forests or its wetlands.
These four Post & Go stamps are featuring these hibernating animals : a hedgehog ("2nd Class" up to 100g, currently £ 0.55) in a nest composed of leaves, a dormouse ("1st Class" up to 100g, currently £ 0.64), a species that can spend half of the year in hibernation, a grass snake ("2nd Large" up to 100g, currently £ 0.75) and a brown long-eared bat ("1st Large" up to 100g, currently £ 0.96) hibernating when its food source (mainly insects) disappears.

The card above was included in this first day envelope, with more details on how these 4 animal species are doing to hibernate.

Post & Go "Common Poppy" stamp on cover from UK

A short message to share with you this letter sent from London (Mount Pleasant mail sorting center) on November 2, 2016, franked with an ATM stamp of the Royal Mail ("Post & Go Stamp"). Thank you very much Johan !
The first ATM stamps of this type appeared in 2008 in UK with a fleet of over 700 machines by early 2015.
The illustrated part of these stamps changes regularly as for example this "Common Poppy", appeared for the 1st time on October 21, 2014.

As a reminder, this poppy is often worn in Commonwealth countries to remember the dead fighters during World War I.
These ATM stamps are often reissued with personalized mentions (gray part on the left), such as the "Post & Go Stamps" issued specially by the Royal Mail at the Salon Philatélique d'Automne 2015 in Paris.
The permanent value "Euro 20g - World 10g" on that stamp corresponds to a price of £ 1.05 currently.
Finally, to note the slogan of the mechanical cancellation evoking the support of the Royal Mail to the charity "Stroke Association" which militates for the prevention and the accompaniment of people touched by stroke.

At the last Autumn Philatelic Exhibition ("Salon Philatélique d'Automne") held in Paris from 5 to 8 November 2015, the Royal Mail was present with, among others, two machines (A013 and A014) delivering ATM stamps called "Post & Go Stamps".
The first ATM stamps of this type appeared in 2008 in the UK with a fleet of over 700 machines by early 2015.
The illustrated part of these stamps changes regularly and four different ones were offered to the public in Paris : Union Flag and Queen Elizabeth II profile inspired by the Machin series (machine A013), heraldic lion and common poppy (machine A014).
This poppy is often worn in Commonwealth countries to remember the dead fighters during World War I.

175th anniversary of the Penny Black in UK and Malaysia

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the issue of the famous Penny Black, the first postage stamp of history and many postal administrations have already commemorated it by issuing special stamps : Azerbaijan, Malta, Austria, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Montserrat, Gibraltar, Togo...
The Royal Mail (of course !) and the Malaysian Post have also issued stamps featuring this Penny Black as well as the Two Pence Blue.
A big thank you David for the First Day Cover (dated May 6, 2015) below regarding the souvenir sheet issued by the British Post :-)

As a reminder : it was actually on May 1840 that UK issued this black (One Penny) stamp depicting the profile of Queen Victoria. That stamp, introduced after a postal reform initiated by Rowland Hill, then allowed not to charge (depending on the weight of the letter, not the distance) the recipient, but only the sender.
Two copies of the Penny Black and two copies of the Two Pence Blue (issued two days after the Penny Black) are featured on this souvenir sheet above (each including the profile of Queen Elizabeth II at the top right), with, in the right margin, an evocation of a workshop where Jacob Perkins' presses printed these first stamps.
To note the red FDC cancellation issued in the city of Bath, referring to the date of May 2, 1840...

Although it was officially issued on May 6, 1840, the first use of the Penny Black to frank an envelope indeed happened on May 2, 1840 in Bath, the local postman having not respected the instructions from the authorities about the official date of use of that stamp...
David had sent me in 2014 the postcard above showing this historic letter of May 2 1840, the first document having been posted in the world using a stamp (with a black round postmark from Bath, identical to the one used on the first day cover of May 6, 2015) !

The Post of Malaysia also celebrated this 175th anniversary by issuing on April 30, 2015 a souvenir sheet consisting of one stamp (RM 3) also reproducing the Penny Black and the Two Pence Blue.
A big thank you Khor for this official FDC above with postmark from Ipoh :-)
The portrait of Rowland Hill as well as the medal (by William Wyon) minted on the occasion of the visit of Queen Victoria to the City of London in 1837, appear in the margins of this sheet.
Queen Victoria's profile included on those two historic stamps, was actually drawn by Henry Corbould from this medal.
Finally, to note the special FDC cancellation (evoking the Maltese cross-shaped first postmarks used on these stamps) and several stamps being part of postal history of Malaysia, illustrated on this envelope on the left.
