"Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic & Paralympic Games" stamps on FDCs from Lithuania

As is customary, the Lithuanian Post issued a new stamp on February 5, 2026, dedicated to the Olympic Games—specifically the 25th edition of the Winter Olympics, held from February 6 to 22, 2026, in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
This stamp (€2.00, print run: 15,000), designed by Natalija Vaišnorienė and printed in sheetlet of 10, appears on the official First Day Cover below, with cancellation from Vilnius.
Lithuania has participated in the Winter Olympics as an independent state since 1928 (St. Moritz), and the Lithuanian Post has issued stamps for every edition since 1992 (Albertville), with the exception of 2022.
Lithuania also participated in the Winter Games starting in 1992, whereas Lithuanian athletes had represented the USSR between 1948 and 1988.

This stamp depicts an athlete competing in an alpine skiing event.
It is worth noting that neither the "Milano Cortina 2026" inscription nor the Lithuanian Olympic Committee emblem appears on this stamp...
For Milano Cortina, Lithuania fielded a record delegation of 17 athletes (8 men, 9 women) competing in four sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, and figure skating.
As with previous editions, Lithuania did not win any medals at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games—unlike its Baltic neighbors, Latvia (2 medals) and Estonia (1 medal).

Lithuania had not participated in the Winter Paralympics since 1994 (Lillehammer). The country made its return at the 14th edition of the Winter Paralympics, held in Milano Cortina from March 6 to 15, 2026.
Likely to celebrate this return, the Lithuanian Post issued a stamp on March 6, 2026, dedicated to the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics—the very first Lithuanian stamp themed around the Paralympic Games.
This stamp (€2.00, print run: 15,000)—also designed by Natalija Vaišnorienė and printed in sheetlet of 10—appears on the official First Day Cover above, with postmark from Lithuania.
Lithuania was represented at Milano Cortina by a single athlete, Rapolas Micevičius (born in 1990), who competed in the snowboard cross event (the sport depicted on the stamp). He had undergone a leg amputation in October 2021 following a kitesurfing accident.

"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamp on FDC from Lithuania

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On October 4, 2024, the Lithuanian Post issued a stamp commemorating the 150th anniversary of the UPU ("Pasaulinei pašto sąjungai - 150 metų").
This stamp (€1.70, print run: 15,000) appears on the official First Day Cover above, with cancellation from Vilnius.
The official logo designed by the UPU (Sonja Denovski) for this 150th anniversary is simply reproduced on the stamp.
Lithuania has been a member of the UPU since January 10, 1992.

EUROPA 2026 (70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps) stamp on FDC from Lithuania

The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps, a philatelic initiative launched to strengthen relations between European countries and promote lasting peace and unity.
First issued in 1956 by six nations – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, founding members of the European Union – this program has gradually expanded to include 53 participating postal organizations.
Last year, PostEurop's Stamps and Philately Working Group organized an internal competition to choose a common design on the theme "70th Anniversary of the EUROPA Stamp: United by...".
Guided by shared values such as communication, innovation, cooperation, and common roots, the members submitted 15 creative proposals, each presenting a unique vision.
Following a vote by 50 postal organizations, the Finnish Post (Posti) won the competition, ahead of the Post of Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo) and the Post of Luxembourg.
The design by artist and graphic designer Klaus Welp will therefore be featured on the EUROPA stamps issued in 2026.

On April 10, 2026, the Lithuanian Post issued a unique EUROPA stamp reproducing the design by Klaus Welp.
This stamp (€2.05, print run: 15,000), printed in a sheetlet of 10, is present on the official FDC above, with postmark from Vilnius.
This EUROPA stamp combines abstract and symbolic elements. The diagonally ascending dotted line represents both the perforation of a stamp and the progressive work of the PostEurop. The seven dots, connected by a straight line, symbolize seventy years of unified effort by postal operators across the continent.
The blending gradients and dotted patterns in the background form a cohesive and vibrant surface, reflecting the joyful mix of colours from the European flag and symbolizing the unity of all member nations.

To note that Lithuania put its first EUROPA stamp into circulation in 1993 (Contemporary Art) and that Klaus Welp has designed many stamps for the Finnish Post since the 2010s, in particular the splendid EUROPA 2011 series (Forests).

EUROPA 2025 (National Archaeological Discoveries) stamp set on cover from Lithuania

As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the 2025 EUROPA stamps is "National Archaeological Discoveries" ("Nacionaliniai archeologiniai atradimai" in Lithuanian), emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting evidence of the past, thus promoting greater awareness among future generations.
On April 25, 2025, the Lithuanian Post released an interesting EUROPA set (two stamps) illustrating this theme, particularly the ancient
Medvėgalis and Bilioniai hillforts.
These two stamps (€2.10, print run: 15,000), designed by Rima Ramonienė based on aerial photographs by Gintautas Zabiela (archaeologist and member of the Postage Stamp Commission), each printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, have been used on the cover below, sent by registered mail on July 8, 2025, from Kaunas. Many thanks, Jürgen!
Study and research on burial mounds in Lithuania (approximately 1,000 have been recorded) have been ongoing since the second half of the 19th century, and during this period, a wealth of varied documentation has been accumulated.

Recently, the most important data have been obtained through the study of the most beautiful burial mounds in western Lithuania, previously known only for their expressive landscape forms and their legends.
The Medvėgalis burial mound complex and the Bilioniai burial mound in the Šilalė district are gems of the Samogitian territory, whose cultural layers conceal marketplaces dating back to the times of the Roman Empire, the traces of battles with the Crusaders, the hitherto unknown custom of burying people in mounds, and many other mysteries of the knowledge of this ancient and distinctive culture.
First mentioned in 1316, Medvėgalis was one of the largest and most powerful Lithuanian hillforts in the region. It was attacked by the Teutonic Knights more than twenty times throughout history, most notably during the Siege of Medvėgalis in 1329, when it fell to the Teutonic forces and its defenders converted to Catholicism.
Bilioniai hillfort could be another possible location for the famous Pilėnai Hill fortification, well-known in Lithuanian history for its heroic defense against the Teutonic Order in 1336.

"Integration of the Baltic States into the European Electricity System" joint stamp with Estonia and Latvia, on cover from Lithuania

On February 9, 2025, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania synchronized the Baltic states' electricity grids with the European continental frequency, thus ending their dependence on the Russian and Belarusian electricity grid (BRELL).
This strategic and historic event marks the final step in the integration of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania into the European Union, in the context of the war in Ukraine and tensions with Russia.
The electricity system has now merged with the continental and Nordic European grids through several connections with Finland, Sweden, and Poland. A total of €1.6 billion, primarily from European funds, was invested in this project.
On March 7, 2025, the three postal administrations of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania issued a joint stamp dedicated to this integration of the Baltic states into the European electricity system.

This stamp was designed by Latvian artist and designer Māris Upenieks with a common design for the three countries but different elements: wind turbines in Estonia, a hydroelectric dam in Latvia, and solar panels in Lithuania, representing the diverse potential of the region. The Lithuanian version of this stamp (€2.10, print run: 15,000), printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, was used on the cover above sent on July 8, 2025, from Kaunas. Thank you very much, Jürgen!
This Lithuanian stamp also features a light bulb, symbolizing the impact of this integration into the European grid on the daily lives of the inhabitants of the Baltic countries.
The electrical circuit, creatively depicted on each of the three stamps, symbolizes the unity of the Baltic states within the European electricity grid. The stamps of the three countries form a cohesive whole, highlighting the diversity and common cause of this region.
In Lithuania, more than 5,000 km of high-voltage power lines and cross-border connections link the local electricity grid to Poland, Sweden, and Latvia, and until February 8, 2025, to the Russian and Belarusian electricity grids.
All three countries have issued the same type of First Day envelope and postmark.

On July 26, 2024, the Lithuanian Post put into circulation a unique stamp dedicated to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (33rd Olympiad) organized from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
In Paris, the Lithuanian delegation (51 athletes engaged in 13 sports) participated for the 9th time in the Summer Olympic Games (since its 2nd independence in 1990).
Designed by Tomas Dragūnas, this stamp (€1.55, print run: 25,000) was used in two copies on the cover below sent by registered mail on August 2, 2024 from the city of Pasvalys (north of the country). Thank you very much Sigitas!
This stamp is dedicated to one of the new sports disciplines on the program of these Paris 2024 Olympic Games, breakdancing, combining sport and urban dance, with the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower in the background and the colors of the 5 Olympic rings.
To note that neither the mention "Paris 2024" nor the emblem of the Lithuanian Olympic Committee appear on this stamp...

On August 9 and 10, 2024, 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls competed one-on-one on Place de la Concorde, in alternating performances, each lasting 60 seconds.
The Lithuanian Post chose this sport because it represented one of the country's great chances of a medal, with B-Girl Nicka (Dominika Banevič), finally defeated in the final by Japanese Ami Yuasa.
In addition to this silver medal, the Lithuanian delegation won 3 other medals (1 silver, 2 bronze) in Paris, in athletics, rowing and men's basketball (3rd Olympic Games in a row without any gold medals).
A little historic reminder : Lithuania had already participated in the Olympic Games in 1924 and 1928 (after the first independence of the country) and then under the colors of the USSR between 1952 and 1988 and finally again under the Lithuanian colors since 1992.

EUROPA 2024 (Underwater Fauna and Flora) stamp set on cover from Lithuania

Merci beaucoup Sigitas !
As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2024, underwater fauna and flora ("Povandeninė fauna ir flora" in Lithuanian) highlights the biodiversity of European waters which suffer from overfishing, pollution and climate change and which must be protected for future generations.
On April 26, 2024, the Lithuanian Post "Lietuvos paštas" put into circulation two stamps to illustrate this theme, in particular an endangered species of crayfish and a species of water lily.
These two stamps (€1.70, print run: 40,000 each), designed by Daria Podluzhna and each printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, have been used on the cover below sent by registered mail on July 19, 2024 from the city of Pasvalys (north of the country). Thank you very much Sigitas!

The stamp on the left shows a broad-fingered crayfish (Astacus astacus), a species common in Europe at the end of the 19th century but now threatened (this species is considered endangered in Lithuania) due to habitat degradation, water pollution, the spread of deadly diseases and the introduction of other invasive North American crayfish species.
To note that this same species of crayfish is depicted on one of the two EUROPA stamps issued this year by the Post of Moldova.
The other stamp is dedicated to a species of water lily (Nymphaea candida), a small botanical water lily, hardy, which produces flowers 10 to 12 cm in diameter, white with yellow stamens, slightly emerging, of real elegance. It flowers from June to August and the leaves are round, split, of a fairly dark olive green.

EUROPA 2023 (Peace - the highest value of humanity) stamp on cover from Lithuania

On the proposal of the Ukrainian Post, the theme chosen by the PostEurop organization for the EUROPA 2023 stamps is "Peace - the highest value of humanity" ("Taika – didžiausia žmonijos vertybė" in Lithuanian), echoing the aggression of the country by Russia which began more than one year ago.
This choice sounds like a reminder of the will that presided over the creation of the European Union in 1950 after the Second World War, summed up by Robert Schuman in a now famous formula: make Europe to make Peace.
To illustrate this 2023 theme, PostEurop organized a competition within the member countries and the Luxembourg Post's "Peace Knot" project (authors: Linda Bos and Runa Egilsdottir - A Designers' Collective) was chosen from among 29 proposals.
This project represents intertwined hearts, and hands with intertwined fingers, inspired by Celtic love knots. The different colors refer to all the countries of the world, united by this new symbol of peace, a kind of society based on cooperation, in which individuals stand together.

On May 9, 2023 (the Europe Day), the Post of Lithuania put into circulation a unique EUROPA stamp, reproducing this common "Peace Knot".
This stamp (€1.45, print run: 40,000), printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, was used on this cover sent by registered mail on May 16, 2023 from the town of Pasvalys (north of the country). Thank you very much Sigitas!
According to the PostEurop jury report, this "Peace Knot" motif is a visual metaphor for a peaceful society in which cooperation with respect for each other's culture is central.

"European Capitals of Culture 2022" joint s/s with Lithuania, on cover from Luxembourg

On May 17, 2022 (May 13, 2022 for Lithuania), the postal administrations of Lithuania and Luxembourg put into circulation a joint souvenir sheet (a first between these 2 countries) to celebrate the designations of Kaunas (Lithuania) and Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg) as "European Capitals of Culture" for the year 2022.
These 2 cities have the distinction of being the 2nd largest cities in their country and the 2nd cities (after Luxembourg in 1995 and 2007 and Vilnius in 2009) to be designated "European Capitals of Culture".
While Esch2022 has chosen the theme "Remix", Kaunas' "From Temporary to Contemporary" focuses on the confrontation with its own history during the 20th century. Numerous festivals, exhibitions, concerts and other events are dedicated to the memory of the events that took place between the two wars, during the Second World War and during the Soviet occupation.

Esch2022 and Kaunas2022 are also planning joint projects in which Novi Sad (Serbia) will also participate, including the development of a jazz work and the production of a large-format graffiti.

The Esch2022 and Kaunas 2022 logos (logo made from the stylized letters "C" for Confluence, Culture, and "K" for Kaunas) appear in the upper margin of this joint souvenir sheet composed of 2 stamps (permanent domestic tariff "L50g" - €0.80), used on the above cover sent on August 3, 2022 from Luxembourg. Thank you very much Dmitri!
To note this illustrated mechanical cancellation, put into circulation from July 12 to August 15, 2022, dedicated to the Contern International Comics Festival.
These 2 stamps represent works by the Lithuanian artist Stasys Ušinskas ("The Bath", 1932) and the Luxembourg artist Foni Tissen ("Nemrod", MNHA Luxembourg).
Stasys Ušinskas (1905-1974) is considered one of the most unique Lithuanian artists of the 20th century, surprising with the breadth of his talent and his unusual view of the world. He is inseparable from the modernism movement in Kaunas between the wars. The talent of Stasys Ušinskas covered many creative fields - painting, stained glass, theater, animation, glass.
Foni Tissen (1909-1975) is a Luxembourgish artist who marked the artistic life of Luxembourg in the middle of the 20th century, best known for his hyperrealist paintings of black humor, many of which are self-portraits. Like Ušinskas, Foni Tissen's artistic expression was not limited to painting, but also included mosaics, frescoes, stained glass and ceramics.

"Tribute to the defenders of freedom in Ukraine" stamp on cover from Lithuania

Like other postal administrations (Latvia, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Estonia, Spain, Luxembourg, Canada, France), the Lithuanian Post put into circulation, on May 6, 2022, a stamp in support of Ukraine and the defenders of freedom ("Ukrainos laisvės gynėjams"), following the Russian invasion launched on February 24, 2022.
Since the start of this war, European countries have shown their support (financial, military) for Ukraine and are doing everything to isolate the Russian regime, via various economic sanctions.
Despite this support, Ukrainian civilians are dying unjustly, cities are being destroyed, refugees are flocking to the closest countries (mainly Poland, Romania, Moldova) and this war is still going on, almost 6 months after the start of this invasion ...

This Lithuanian stamp (€1 + €1, print run: 40,000) was designed following a competition organized by the Lithuanian Post, the winner being Eglė Kirlytė (creative agency "Autoriai") which represented two people, in yellow and blue, hugging, "a symbol of peace, warmth and love" according to the author.
This stamp was printed in a sheetlet composed of 4 stamps + 2 labels (1 blue and 1 yellow) mentioning that this €1 surcharge is donated to the Lithuanian non-governmental organization "Mėlyna ir Geltona" ("Blue and Yellow") which finances projects to help the Ukrainian population and fighters, through an appropriate slogan "Let your money fight".
This stamp and its adjoining label was used on this cover sent by registered mail on May 21, 2022 from Vilnius (what exactly does the acronym "CSD" on the postmark mean?). Thank you very much Tomas and Jürgen. Glory to Ukraine!

EUROPA 2022 (Stories and Myths) stamp set on cover from Lithuania

On April 29, 2022, the Lithuanian Post "Lietuvos paštas" released two EUROPA stamps with the theme of Stories and myths ("Padavimai ir mitai" in Lithuanian) this year.
These two stamps (€0.95, print run: 40,000 each), designed by Greta Gruzdaitytė and each printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, have been used on the cover below sent on May 19, 2022 from the city of Tauragė (central-west of the country). Thank you very much Jürgen and Tomas!
To illustrate this theme, the Lithuanian Post has chosen a fern flower and one of the most famous tales in Lithuania, "Eglė, the Queen of Serpents".
The fern flower has a symbolic meaning in Lithuania. Although ferns don't actually bloom, their quest on Midsummer's Eve has long been shrouded in more than one myth.

According to many legends, the fern flower only blooms on a magical night, once every 100 years, and it only happens on the shortest night of the year, the Rasa festival. Finding a fern flower means great success and happiness.

The other stamp evokes one of the most famous Lithuanian folk tales, "Eglė, the Queen of Serpents" ("Eglė žalčių karalienė").
Although there are more than a hundred versions of this tale, the main line is the same in all of them, the unhappy love story of Eglė and Žilvinas, who appears to others in the form of a snake, which ended with the arrival of Žilvinas in bloody foam, and the transformation of Eglė and her children into trees. As for Eglė, she turns into spruce (in Lithuanian, "Eglė" is the name of spruce).
According to folklorists, it is one of the few Lithuanian fairy tales that ends tragically. Sources say that "Eglė zalčių karalienė" was first published in 1837 by M. Jasewicz.
Since then, the tale has been transformed into more than a book or a performance, and a sculpture dedicated to this legend is still present in the Palanga Botanical Garden.

"European Capitals of Culture 2022" joint s/s with Luxembourg, on FDC from Lithuania

EUROPA 2021 (Endangered National Wildlife) stamp set on cover from Lithuania

On April 23, 2021, the Lithuanian Post "Lietuvos paštas" issued two EUROPA stamps with the theme of endangered national wildlife ("Nykstanti nacionalinė laukinė gamta" in Lithuanian) this year.
These two stamps (€ 0.75, print run: 22,000 each), designed by L. Aleknavičiūtė and each printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, have been used on the cover below sent on September 22, 2021 from the city of Tauragė (center-west of the country). Thank you very much Jürgen and Tomas!
To illustrate this theme, the Lithuanian Post chose two animal species appearing in the Lithuanian Red Book of Animals particularly endangered in the country, the Eurasian lynx and the gray seal.
The gray seal (Halichoerus grypus), listed in the Lithuanian Red Book since 1989, is a species living in particular in the Baltic Sea. The nets of industrial fishermen pose a great threat to this species of seal.

In the 1930s, there were around 20,000 gray seals, compared to currently 10 to 50 seals seen in Lithuanian waters.
The other stamp is dedicated to the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), a forest mammal listed in the Lithuanian Red Book since 2000. This species is mainly threatened by deforestation, people visiting forests and poaching.
Currently, around 30-40 animals live in Lithuanian forests, in some forest areas like Biržai, Karšuva, Žaliojja forest, Taujėnai - Užulėnis, Kuliai and Rokiškis district.
To note that this species is also featured on EUROPA stamps issued this year by Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina (Sarajevo), Croatia, North Macedonia, Spain and France.

"Battle of Khotyn's 400th anniversary" joint s/s with Poland and Lithuania, on cover from Ukraine

Between September 2 and October 9, 1621, one of the most important battles in the history of Poland took place, near the fortress of Khotyn, located today in Ukraine.
An Ottoman army of 160,000 soldiers, commanded by Osman II, then advanced from Adrianople towards the Polish border, the Turks hoping to conquer Poland, after their victory at the battle of Țuțora.
The Polish commander, Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, hetman of the Polish-Lithuanian Union, crossed the Dniester in September 1621, and took refuge in the fortress of Khotyn, thus blocking the advance of the Ottomans. Outnumbered (around 50,000 men), the Poles resisted and won this battle but paid a heavy price, around 15,000 dead (40,000 for the Turks) including Jan Karol Chodkiewicz who died of exhaustion in the fortress on September 24, 1621.
On September 2, 2021, the postal administrations of Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania put into circulation a joint souvenir sheet (designed by the Polish Jarosław Ochendzan) dedicated to the 400th anniversary of this battle of Khotyn.

Joint stamp "Sigismund II Augustus 500th birthday" with Lithuania on cover from Poland

After a first joint stamp issued in 2018 dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the coronation of the icon of the Mother of God (Our Lady) of Trakai, Lithuania, the postal administrations of Poland and Lithuania put into circulation, on August 1, 2020, a 2nd joint stamp having for theme the 500th anniversary of the birth of Sigismund II Augustus (1520-1572), Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland from 1548 to 1572.
The Polish version of this stamp (3.30 PLN, print run: 175,000), designed by Bożydar Grozdew, is present in two copies on this nice letter sent on October 9, 2020 from Krakow. Thank you very much Krisztian!
This stamp reproduces a part of a work of art (1867, National Museum in Warsaw) featuring Sigismund II Augustus and Barbara Radziwiłł, the love of his life, by Jan Matejko (1838-1893), considered the greatest Polish historical painter.

Barbara, also born in 1520, comes from the Radziwiłł house, one of the oldest and more powerful Lithuanian-Polish families.
Around 1543, a love story occured between Barbara and Sigismond II Augustus, son of the King of Poland. The two lovers then married secretly.
In 1548 after the death of his father, Sigismond became King of Poland and made public his secret marriage with Barbara despite the injunctions of the Diet which intended to break this union considered illegal.
This marriage, which strengthened the power of the already very powerful Radziwiłł family in struggle for control of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, also met strong opposition from the Polish nobility and the royal family, Barbara's brother being a staunch defender of the sovereignty of Lithuania against any union with Poland.
In 1550, however, Barbara was crowned in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow but died suddenly 5 months later (suspected poisoning by the queen mother, Bona Sforza).
Despite this tragic end, the love between Sigismund II Augustus and Barbara has been regarded as an example of true love for almost 500 years and is accompanied by many romantic stories, with many works written on this theme.
Krisztian used 2 other stamps above including one (1.30 PLN), issued on October 7, 2005 on the occasion of World Post Day, depicting an old view of the historic postal building of the same town of Krakow.
The other stamp (0.10 PLN), issued September 15, 2015, is part of a nice definitive series devoted to flowers and fruits, a white water lily flower (Nymphaea alba) here.
