EUROPA 2025 (National Archaeological Discoveries) stamp set on cover from Ireland

Merci beaucoup Declan !
The theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the 2025 EUROPA stamps is entitled "National Archaeological Discoveries" ("Fionnachtana seandálaíochta náisiúnta" in Irish).
Ireland has a rich archaeological heritage dating back to the Mesolithic period, which offered a wide selection of objects. The antiquities presented here and current archaeological discoveries offer perspectives and links to the past, recalling Ireland's rich heritage and providing insights into human life and its influence on contemporary lifestyles.
On May 8, 2025, the Irish Post "An Post" released a beautiful EUROPA set (two stamps) illustrating this theme, in collaboration with the National Museum of Ireland.
Designed by Ger Garland, these two self-adhesive stamps have been used on the cover below sent on May 14, 2025 from "Tír an Iúir", the name of a district of Dublin where is located a main mail sorting center, the other mention "BÁC" on the postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath"). Many thanks Declan!

The stamp on the left (domestic rate "N" for shipment up to 100g, currently €1.65, print run: 72,000), printed in a booklet of eight stamps, depicts the detail of an 8th-century bronze ladle decorated with a human head, discovered in 2006 in a bog in Ballynapark, County Wicklow.
This type of object is considered an Irish development, tracing its origins back to late Roman domestic tableware in Britain and the continent. Ladles undoubtedly became revered secular and ecclesiastical prestige objects in early medieval Ireland, an importance confirmed by their assimilation into Viking cultures from Ireland to Scandinavia.
The other stamp (international rate "W" for shipment up to 100g, currently €2.65, print run: 56,000), printed in a booklet of four stamps, features the detail of an oval Viking brooch made of cast copper alloy, decorated with gilding, silver, and glass, probably dating from the 9th century. This brooch, decorated with eight tiny bears, is one of a pair found in 2004 in the grave of a woman believed to have been one of the first Viking settlers in what is now the village of Finglas, north of Dublin.
Oval brooches are characteristic of women's clothing during the Viking Age. Paired oval brooches were worn in the chest and acted as fasteners for a sleeveless apron.

EUROPA 2024 (Underwater Fauna and Flora) stamp set on cover from Ireland

As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2024, underwater fauna and flora, highlights the biodiversity of European waters that suffer from overfishing, pollution and climate change and which have to be protected for future generations. .
The Irish Post "An Post" put its EUROPA set (2 stamps) into circulation on June 6, 2024, just before World Oceans Day, celebrated each year on June 8.
Designed by Jenny Dempsey from illustrations by Shevaun Doherty, these two self-adhesive stamps have been used on the cover below sent on October 13, 2024 from Dublin. Many thanks Declan!
To note that the cancellation refers to the Gaelic name for Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").

The stamp on the left (domestic rate "N" for a shipment up to 100g, currently €1.40, print run: 72,000), printed in a booklet of 8 stamps, depicts a species of red seaweed (Chondrus crispus), an algae that grows in a fan shape, commonly found along the Irish coast, in colours ranging from deep purple to red and yellow. This seaweed has been an important food, fertilizer, and medicinal comestible for centuries.
The other stamp (international rate "W" for a shipment up to 100g, currently €2.20, print run: 56,000), printed in a booklet of 4 stamps, depicts a compass jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella), a species that is especially abundant along the Irish west coast, indicative of a healthy ecosystem, and integral to local biodiversity.
Schools of young fish seek refuge from predators amongst the stinging tentacles, and the jellyfish are a vital food source for sea turtles and ocean sunfish.

EUROPA 2023 (Peace - the highest value of humanity) stamp set on cover from Ireland

On the proposal of the Ukrainian Post, the theme chosen by the PostEurop organization for the EUROPA 2023 stamps is "Peace - the highest value of humanity", echoing the aggression of the country by Russia which started on February 2022.
This choice sounds like a reminder of the will that presided over the creation of the European Union in 1950 after the Second World War, summed up by Robert Schuman in a now famous formula: make Europe to make Peace.
To illustrate this 2023 theme, PostEurop organized a competition within the member countries and the Luxembourg Post's "Peace Knot" project (authors: Linda Bos and Runa Egilsdottir - A Designers' Collective) was chosen from among 29 proposals.
This project represents intertwined hearts, and hands with intertwined fingers, inspired by Celtic love knots. The different colors refer to all the countries of the world, united by this new symbol of peace, a kind of society based on cooperation, in which individuals stand together.

On May 9, 2023 (the Europe Day), the Irish Post anpost released its EUROPA series, with a stamp (international rate "W" for postage up to 100g, currently €2.20, print run: 56,000) reproducing this common "Peace Knot" and another one representing the Irish Post's project (design: Ailbhe Phelan) for this PostEurop competition.
These two self-adhesive stamps, each printed in a sheetlet of 8 stamps, were used on this cover sent on July 5, 2023 from Dublin. Thank you very much Gearóid!
The other stamp (domestic rate "N" for postage up to 100g, currently €1.35, print run: 72,000) is inspired by the concept that individual nations, represented by colorful birds, can come together to be a driving force for peace. Each of the multicolored birds is different, but each takes flight from their homeland below, joining together and moving in solidarity.
To note the mention "Peace" in English and Gaelic ("síocháin") on these two stamps and this mechanical cancellation with a slogan evoking the 100 years of the creation of "savings certificates". More than 25 billion euros are currently managed by "Ireland State Savings".

"Irish Colleges - Coláistí Samhraidh" stamp set on FDC from Ireland

On May 26, 2022, Ireland's An Post unveiled two stamps celebrating Coláistí Samhraidh - also known as the Gaeltacht or Irish College.
These two stamps (domestic rate "N" for postage up to 100g, currently €1.25) were issued just as most of these Irish colleges were preparing to reopen after being closed since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
These two se-tenant stamps (print run: 148,000 each), printed in sheets of 16 stamps (8 of each), designed by the Dublin-based agency Detail, are present on this official FDC, with postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
Unless I am mistaken, the mention "Aon scéal?" on the postmark could be translated as "What's up?".

("Comment ça va?") et "Tá mé go maith!"
Two other phrases in Gaelic, "Conas atá tú?" ("How are you?") and "Tá mé go maith!" ("I'm fine!"), are mentioned on these two stamps, illustrating different symbols associated with these Irish Colleges: first love, bacon and cabbage, sport, music, céilí dancing, smartphones prohibited, changeable Irish weather and, of course, writing and receiving letters.
A summer trip to the Gaeltacht is a rite of passage in Irish life (its culture and language in particular) and, for many teenagers, marks their first trip away from home and parents. Over 25,000 students have been enrolled in Coláistí Samhraidh in almost 40 locations in 2022.

"Irish Women in Sport" stamp set on FDC from Ireland

A few days before International Women's Rights Day, the Irish Post anpost put into circulation, on March 3, 2022, a nice series (6 stamps) dedicated to Irish sportswomen who have particularly distinguished themselves on the international scene ("Mná Éireannacha sa Spórt" in Gaelic).
Designed by Dublin studio "Unthink", these 6 self-adhesive stamps ("N" domestic rate for postage up to 100g, currently €1.25) are multicolored, with each athlete's name in large font on a silver background, with each athlete portrayed in a sporting highlight, captured by sports photojournalists from Ireland's Inpho and Sportsfile agencies and Getty Images.
This series is present on the official FDC below, with postmarks referring to the Gaelic name for Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
The first stamp is dedicated to Sonia O'Sullivan, middle-distance and cross-country specialist, the most successful in Ireland having won 16 major world, European and Olympic medals. She is featured on this stamp during the European Championships in Budapest in 1998 where she won 2 gold medals (5000m and 10000m).

Rachael Blackmore, featured on the next stamp, became Cheltenham's first female top jockey and Aintree's first female Grand National winner.
Two boxers (lightweight's category) who are multiple world and European champions are represented in this series, Kellie Harrington, Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021 and Katie Taylor, holder of a world professional title and Olympic champion in London in 2012.
One of the 6 stamps is dedicated to the Irish women's field hockey team, silver medalists at the World Cup in 2018 and qualified again in 2022 for this competition. The team participated for the first time in its history in the Olympic Games, in Tokyo in 2021 (ranked 10th).
The last stamp in this series depicts a Paralympic athlete, Ellen Keane, Paralympic champion in swimming (100m breaststroke) in Tokyo in 2021 and bronze medalist in Rio in 2016.

EUROPA 2022 (Stories and Myths) stamp set on FDC from Ireland

Happy to share this very elegant official FDC put into circulation on September 8, 2022 by the Irish post anpost, concerning the EUROPA series (2 stamps) dedicated this year to Stories and myths ("Scéalta agus Miotais" in Gaelic).
To note that the postmark refers to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
This series, designed by Design HQ from illustrations by Aideen Barry (b. 1979), a contemporary visual artist from Cork, and printed in the Netherlands by Royal Joh. Enschedé (each stamp in a sheet of 16 stamps), is dedicated to Balor, a legendary figure of the Fomorians in Irish mythology.
The surprising design of this series calls upon contemporary colors used to create the impression of poison almost leaping off the stamps...

The first stamp (domestic rate "N" for a shipment up to 100g, currently €1.25, print run: 122,000) illustrates the Balor's poisoned eye.
According to legend, Balor is a one-eyed giant whose eye paralyzes or stuns entire armies. He lives on the island of Tory, where he lives, his only eye closed, in constant fear of seeing a prophecy come true according to which he must die by the hand of his grandson, the god Lug (which will end by arriving).
The other stamp (international rate "W" for a shipment up to 100g, currently €2.20, print run: 94,000) relates to the legend that claimed Balor had only to look on the landscape to cause damage, such as in the "Poisoned Glen" valley in County Donegal (north of the island) here.
Balor is the king of the Fomorians, inhuman, hideous and demonic beings who are the personification of chaos and destruction. They are at war with all, and especially with the Tuatha Dé Danann ("the folk of the goddess Danu"), the gods of Ireland.

EUROPA 2021 (Endangered National Wildlife) stamp set on FDC from Ireland

Happy to share this very elegant official FDC put into circulation on May 6, 2021 by the Irish Post anpost, concerning the EUROPA series (2 stamps) dedicated this year to the endangered national wildlife ("Fiadhúlra Náisiúnta atá i mBaol" in Gaelic ).
To note that the postmark refers to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
This series (illustrations by Shevaun Doherty), designed by Jenny Dempsey and printed in the Netherlands by Royal Joh. Enschedé (each stamp in a sheet of 16 stamps), features two species of moths and molluscs particularly threatened in the country.
The first stamp (domestic rate "N" for a shipment up to 100g, currently € 1.10) represents a species of moth, the white prominent moth (Leucodonta bicoloria).

This butterfly, whose range extends from western Europe to Japan, was considered an extinct species in Ireland and Britain before being rediscovered in 2008 in County Kerry (south west of the island).
The other stamp (international rate "W" for a shipment up to 100g, currently € 2.00) is devoted to the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera), a lamellibranch mollusk from the clear rivers of Europe, Russia, Canada and the east coast of the United States.
This species is very rare and endangered in Ireland and Western Europe, living only in very clean rivers, the survival of the species being threatened by pollution.
To note that one of the two EUROPA stamps issued this year by the Latvian Post represented the same species.
The illustration on the envelope shows a Kerry slug (Geomalacus maculosus) whose range includes southwestern Ireland, northwestern Spain, and central and northern Portugal.
In Ireland, the Wildlife Act is the main legislative protection mechanism for species of significant conservation value.

"Ice Men - Explorers in the Arctic and Antarctic" stamp set on cover from Ireland

Irishmen were at the heart of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions during what is considered the "golden age" of these missions in the 1800s and early 1900s.
On April 15, 2021, the Irish Post (an post) wished to pay tribute to these courageous explorers by issuing four "Ice Men" stamps to underline the role played by eight Irishmen who were members of various challenging and pioneering expeditions.
Ernest Shackleton and Tom Crean have gained wide notoriety over the years, but the other six explorers featured on these stamps are less well known.
The two stamps in this series at the permanent rate "N" (domestic shipping up to 100g - € 1.10 currently) were used on this cover sent on August 20, 2021 from Dublin. Thank you very much François!
To note this mechanical cancellation and its slogan "Send that festival feeling", undoubtedly in reference to another series (4 stamps) issued on July 15, 2021, devoted to famous Irish singers and songwriters.

These two stamps (illustration: David Rooney, print run: 148,000), printed in a same sheetlet of 16 self-adhesive stamps, pay homage to Edward Bransfield and Francis Crozier respectively.
Along with Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Nathaniel Palmer, Edward Bransfield (1785-1852) is considered one of the co-discoverers of Antarctica in 1820, especially the South Shetland Islands. A strait located between these islands and the Antarctic continent today bears his name.
The stamp shows the ship Williams off these islands in 1820, with chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarcticus) in the foreground.
The other stamp above on the right is dedicated to Francis Crozier (1796-1848) who participated in 6 polar expeditions (between 1821 and 1848), losing his life in the Canadian Arctic archipelago during the Franklin expedition.
The stamp evokes in particular the Ross expedition (between 1839 and 1843), the most important British expedition to Antarctica of the 19th century, which made it possible to discover in particular the Transantarctic chain, Ross Island and its volcanoes, the volcanoes Erebus and Terror.

"European Capitals of Culture 2020" joint set with Croatia on FDC from Ireland

With Galway in Ireland (after Dublin in 1991 and Cork in 2005), the city of Rijeka has been awarded (by the European Union) the title of "European Capital of Culture" for the year 2020, a first for Croatia.
Established in 1985 (Athens was the first designated city), this title allows concerned cities (and regions) to present their cultural wealth through many events, about 1000 for Rijeka (theater, music, exhibitions, architecture, dance , educational projects...) and many theatrical, literary, musical, dancing, cinematographic, architectural, cultural, sporting and gastronomic events for Galway (with a focus on the themes of landscapes and languages).
On January 23, 2020, the postal administrations of the 2 countries put into circulation a very nice joint set (2 stamps) dedicated to this theme and these 2 cities of Galway and Rijeka in particular.
The Irish version of this joint series is featured on the official FDC below, with a postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Galway ("Gaillimh").

The Claddagh ring, a traditional Irish ring, offered for engagement or worn as a wedding ring, is featured on the postmark as well as on the Galway stamp (domestic rate "N" for shipment up to 100g, currently € 1.00, print run: 150,000), designed by Steve Simpson.
This stamp also shows the Claddagh seafront buildings, the Spanish Arch and the Tower of the National University of Ireland, a hooker (traditional fishing boat), the coat of arms of the town and an owl, symbol of the street parade of the Macnas performance company. This stamp also evokes the many musical festivals organized each year in this city (guitar and musical notes).
The other stamp (domestic rate "N" for a shipment up to 100g, currently € 1.00, print run: 94,000), designed by Tomislav Tomić, is dedicated to Rijeka, with the clock tower (or city tower), Saint Vitus cathedral and Church of Our Lady of Trsat, as well as
its famous carnival, the oldest in the country, and its disguises of peasants called "zvoncari", awful characters covered in hair and wool ...

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on FDC from Ireland

Happy to share with you this very elegant official FDC put into circulation on July 16, 2020 by the Irish Post, regarding the EUROPA series (2 stamps) dedicated this year to the ancient postal routes ("Bealaí Poist Ársa" in Gaelic).
To note that the cancellation refers to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
This series (illustrations by Orlagh Murphy), designed by the Red&Gray agency and printed in the Netherlands by Royal Joh. Enschedé (each stamp in a sheetlet of 9 stamps), features the journey of a letter in 4 parts, inspired by the illuminations of medieval religious art.
The first stamp (domestic rate "N" for a shipment up to 100g, currently € 1.00, print run: 108,000) represents the author of the message (a monk writing a letter) and the transport of this letter by a messenger on board a boat.
The other stamp (international rate "W" for a shipment up to 100g, currently € 1.70, print run: 83,000) represents the continuation of the journey of this letter, by this same messenger on horseback then the delivery of the letter to a lady.
To design this series and this FDC, Orlagh Murphy was inspired by the story of Gerald of Wales (Giraldus Cambrensis in Latin) who was a Welsh jurist and ecclesiastical historian, Latin literate of the 12th century, companion of King Henry II Plantegenet.
Historian of the "Conquest of Ireland", Giraldus Cambrensis (c. 1146 - c. 1223) in particular published a map representing Ireland, Great Britain and part of the European continent in "Topographia Hibernica" (1188).
The illustration on the envelope is inspired by this map, including the route from Dublin to Rome, via Paris and Lyon (!) taken by Giraldus Cambrensis himself.

"Danny Boy" stamp from the "Great Irish Songs" set on cover from Dublin

Thank you very much Tolga for this nice letter sent on August 20, 2019 from Dublin, franked with one of the 4 stamps of a series issued on May 2, 2019, devoted to great Irish songs, famous around the world, recalling the singular country's cultural heritage.
To note this slogan "An Post supporting Pride" on the left on the mechanical cancellation of the Dublin Mails Center, recalling that the Irish Post supports the Pride March in the country, a manifestation of the LGBT movement to give visibility to these people and to claim freedom and equality of sexual orientations and gender identities (the famous rainbow flag was hoisted on the famous GPO of Dublin for the occasion).
This stamp (international "W" rate for a shipment up to 100g, € 1.70 currently, print run: 94,000) is dedicated to the song "Danny Boy".

"Danny Boy" is a ballad on a traditional Irish melody whose lyrics were written in 1913 by the English author Frederic Weatherly. The lyrics have been rearranged to better match the accompanying melody of "Londonderry Air", a popular melody within the Irish diaspora, sometimes used by Northern Ireland as a hymn before some sports competitions.
This stamp, printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, includes the first words of this song "Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling" printed with a golden ink, with, in the background, the portrait of one of the first performers of this song in the 1920s, the Irish tenor John McCormack (1884-1945).
The other 3 stamps in this series evoke more contemporary songs, "On Raglan Road" (Luke Kelly), "Dreams" (The Cranberries) and "With or Without You" (U2).

Tribute to Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King on cover from Ireland

On April 5, 2018, the Irish Post "An Post" put into circulation a series (2 se-tenant stamps) entitled "International Statesmen", dedicated in particular to the South African Nelson Mandela (100th anniversary of his birth) and to the American Martin Luther King (50th anniversary of his death), two of the most prominent civil rights advocates in the world in the 20th century.
Created by the design studio Aad (based in Dublin), these two stamps (international rate up to 100g "W" - € 1.70 currently, print run: 120,000 for each stamp) were printed in France by Cartor Security Printing in the same sheet made up of 16 stamps (8 of each).
These two stamps were used on the letter below sent on April 26, 2019 from "Tír an Iúir", the name of a district of Dublin where is located a main sorting center, the other mention" BÁC "on the postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
These two stamps were designed from photographs of Nelson Mandela (in Soweto in September 1990) and Martin Luther King (during the March on Washington in August 1963).

Martin Luther King (1929-1968) is best known for his militant and humanitarian activities, which advanced the cause of African-American civil rights.
He remains world famous for his speech "I have a dream" pronounced in front of 250,000 demonstrators during the March on Washington in 1963.
The following year, US President Johnson signed laws prohibiting racial discrimination and Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent campaign against racism. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis.
South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) studied law to become one of the first black lawyers of South Africa.
In the 1950s, he was elected head of the youth wing of the African National Congress (ANC) and arrested in 1962 and then sentenced to life imprisonment for high treason and conspiracy against the state.
He was released in 1990 and served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, when his government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through reconciliation.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, shared with former President Frederik Willem de Klerk.

"World Meeting of Families 2018" souvenir sheet on cover from Ireland

From 21 to 26 August 2018, the 9th edition of the "World Meeting of Families", a gathering of the Catholic Church that has been held every three years since 1994, took place in Dublin, Ireland.
This major international event brings together families from across the world to celebrate, pray and reflect upon the central importance of marriage and the family as the cornerstone of our lives, of society and of the Church...
On this occasion, the Irish Post "An Post" put into circulation on July 26, 2018, a set of two stamps (printed in France by Cartor Security Printing), also gathered in the souvenir sheet used on the letter below sent on April 26, 2019 from "Tír an Iúir", the name of a district of Dublin where is located a main sorting center, the other mention" BÁC "on the postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").

Created by the Vermillion Design agency, these two stamps respectively represent Pope Francis releasing a dove (€ 1.00, print run: 122,000) and a family (parents, children, grandparents) walking on a beach (€ 1.50, print run : 94,000).
This photograph of the Pope was taken on May 15, 2013 during a general audience on St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City.
To note also these doves in the margins of the souvenir sheet as well as buildings in Dublin, especially the bell towers of Christ Church Cathedral and John's Lane Church.
The theme of this World Meeting of Families was "The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World" and the main events were held at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS), Croke Park Stadium and Phoenix Park.
Pope Francis attended this meeting on 25 and 26 August 2018, almost 40 years after the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ireland.
To note that the Vatican Post has curiously not issued any stamp in 2018 dedicated to this event while it was the case in 2012 (Milan) and 2015 (Philadelphia)...
The 10th edition of this World Meeting of Families will take place in 2021 in Rome.

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) miniature sheet on cover from Ireland

On this Europe Day, I'm happy to share this letter franked with one of the nicest EUROPA series issued this year (on April 11th), by An Post (Ireland), illustrating the theme of the national birds ("Éin Náisiúnta" in Gaelic).
An Post has put into circulation two stamps (design: Design HQ, printed in France by Cartor Security Printing), also in the form of the miniature sheet (print run: 15,000) used on the letter below sent on April 26, 2019 from "Tír an Iúir", the name of a district of Dublin where is located a main sorting center, the other mention" BÁC "on the postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
Recalling that birds are an essential (and vulnerable) element of the natural world, An Post has selected stamps depicting a seabird, the Roseate Tern, and a wader, the Golden Plover.
These stamps were designed from illustrations by Killian Mullarney, the ornithologist and Irish artist who already designed the beautiful "Birds" definitive series issued between 1997 and 2004.

The Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii - domestic "N" rate for a shipment up to 100g, € 1.00 currently) has a black beak (red root in summer, as on the stamp), red legs and is recognizable at rest by the long threads of ite tail. In spring, this usually very white bird shows a pink hue on the chest.
The Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria - international "W" rate for a shipment up to 100g, € 1.70 currently) is a migratory bird even if some populations are sedentary, such as those living in the British Isles.
These two birds are on BirdWatch Ireland's list of endangered birds, the Golden Plover being one of the 37 birds on the "red list" (high concern), the Roseate Tern being among the 91 birds on the "amber list" (medium concern).
Lastly, about half (25) of the countries or territories issuing EUROPA stamps this year, including Ireland (see the little symbol on the bottom of the stamps and next to the EUROPA logo in the margin of the sheet), are participating in the "Europa Bird Stamps 2019" project consisting in scanning the stamps (via a free CEE-Application) to listen to the birds singing.

"Che Guevara 50th anniversary of his death" stamp on FDC from Ireland

On October 5, 2017, the Irish Post issued a stamp devoted to Ernesto (Che) Guevara (1928-1967) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death.
That stamp, quickly sold out (it seems that it was later printed again), sparked heated controversy because of the debatable appraisal of this personality, accused by his opponents of being a terrorist and having instituted torture camps or, for others, a myth and a symbol for the revolutionary Marxist movements and for the struggle of the poorest and oppressed against American imperialism and capitalism ...
I was lucky enough to receive the official FDC below regarding that stamp (€ 1.00, initial print run: 122,000) designed by the agency Red & Gray.
Thank you very much Carolyn for this cover with cancellation from Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath")!

But what is the relationship between "Che" and Ireland?
As mentioned on this envelope, the father of Che Guevara was of Irish descent ("in my son's veins flowed the blood of the Irish rebels").
And that stamp reproduces the portrait of Che created in 1968 by the Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick, from the famous photograph "Guerrillero Heroico" taken in 1960 by the Cuban Alberto Korda.
We like or not this character but I find that stamp very successful. Hasta la victoria siempre!
After studying medicine, Che Guevara (born in Argentina) learned Marxism and then joined Fidel Castro's troops in 1955 and participated in the Cuban landings and the overthrow of the dictator Batista. He became a Cuban citizen and held key political offices.
In 1965 he went to Latin America to organize the guerrilla war where he wanted to export the revolution and create several fronts to attack American imperialism. He was captured in the Valle Grande region during a clash with the Bolivian army that executed him on October 9, 1967, under the orders of the CIA.

EUROPA 2018 (Bridges) stamp set on FDC from Ireland

Very happy to share with you this splendid FDC published by the Irish Post, concerning the EUROPA 2018 series (2 stamps), issued on May 3, dedicated this year to bridges ("Droichid" in Irish).
Thank you very much Carolyn for this cover with a postmark from Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath")!
This EUROPA set, printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, is in my humble opinion one of the most successful this year with these (blue and green) pastel shades and this modern style, a design by the "Vermillion Design" studio based in Dublin.
The illustration on the left shows the Samuel Beckett Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge designed by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, inaugurated in Dublin in 2009.
This same bridge is in the spotlight on the First Day cancellation.

The stamp on the left (€ 1.00, print run: 122,000) represents the Mizen Head footbridge, built by Irishenco and inaugurated in March 2011.
This bridge then replaced an older bridge, built in 1909, to provide access to the Mizen Head lighthouse, one of the most southerly sites in Ireland (County Cork), popular with tourists for its dramatic cliff scenery.
The other stamp (€ 1.50, print run: 94,000) is dedicated to the Boyne Viaduct, a railway bridge built between 1851 and 1855 on the Boyne River in Drogheda (County Louth), a port and industrial city located on the northeast coast of the country.
Composed of 15 stone arches and a central metal part, this bridge (renovated in the 1930s and 1990s) is located on the Dublin-Belfast railway line.

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) stamp set on cover from Ireland

On May 4, 2017, the Irish Post (An Post) put into circulation its EUROPA series consisting of two stamps, devoted to the theme of castles this year.
There are more than 30,000 castles it seems on the Irish territory (including Northern Ireland), including more or less ruined sites.
The Irish Post has chosen two of the country's most famous castles on these two stamps, the Dublin Castle (€ 1.00, print run: 122,000) and the King John's Castle in Limerick (€ 1.35, print run: 94,000).
Printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, these two stamps have been designed from nice photographs by Kelvin Gillmor.

A big thank you Carolyn for this great cover sent on August 24, 2017 from Donadea ("Domhnach Dheá" in Gaelic), a civil parish located in the north of Kildare county, franked with these two stamps!
Dublin Castle was built from the 12th century, most of the current buildings dating back to the 18th century.
Now used as a conference center, this site was the seat of British rule in Ireland for many centuries, until 1922.
King John's Castle, built at the beginning of the 13th century under the orders of King John of England, is a fortified castle built on King's Island, an island located on the Shannon River in the medieval city of Limerick.
This site, splendid example of the Anglo-Norman fortified architecture, underwent many sieges especially in the 17th century.

These two stamps were printed each in a sheetlet of 10 stamps including a margin to the left representing a detail of the respective castles as well as the EUROPA logo.
The margin of the sheetlet (complete view below) concerning the stamp dedicated to the King John's Castle in Limerick was applied on the other side of this envelope above.

EUROPA 2015 (Old toys) stamp set on cover from Ireland

Regarding the EUROPA stamp series issued in 2015, devoted to the theme of "Old toys", some countries or territories are missing in my cover's collection (Armenia, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Montenegro) and I'm happy to withdraw Ireland from this list !
A big thank you Declan for this nice letter with postmark from Dublin dated December 21, 2015, franked with the two EUROPA stamps issued on May 14, 2015 by the Irish Post (An Post).

To note on this postmark, the mention of the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath"), meaning "the town of the hurdled ford".
To illustrate this theme of Old toys ("Bréagáin sheanda" in Irish Gaelic), paintings by the artist Comhghall Casey (born 1976), native from Northern Ireland, have been chosen : a toy truck (€ 0.68, print run : 136,000) and a teddy bear (€ 1.00, print run : 116,000).
Designed by the Dublin's agency Design Factory, these two stamps were printed each in sheetlet of 10 stamps, by Cartor Security Printing, France.
