América-UPAEP 2022 stamp (Arts) on cover from Chile

After tourism in 2021 and before philately and postage stamps in 2023, the theme chosen in 2022 for the América-UPAEP stamp issues was devoted to Arts.
As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories.
UPAEP, headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, aims to develop and modernize postal services, facilitating the exchange of experiences and the implementation of cooperation projects between member countries.
Like EUROPA stamps, UPAEP stamps are issued each year since 1989 by around fifteen countries
, on a common theme.
The Chilean Post is one of the few postal administrations to have issued UPAEP stamps every year since 1989, particularly in 2022 with a stamp put into circulation on November 18.

This UPAEP stamp (610 CLP, print run: 50,000, design: Daniela Valentini), featuring the UPAEP logo, was used on the above cover sent on March 19, 2025, from the city of San Felipe (Valparaíso region). Thank you very much, Rosa!
This stamp is specifically dedicated to mural art ("Muralismo"), featuring a monumental work, "Ofelia", by Chilean artist Javier Barriga, located in the Mori Theater in Santiago (Bellavista district).
Bringing art to the street has been the main driving force of Javier Barriga (born in 1987) throughout his career as a muralist. His large-scale works surprise and amaze passersby: they are mostly women seen from behind, with braids, mysterious. We don't know who they are, what they're thinking, or what they're feeling.
This mural, "Ofelia," (9 meters high, 6 meters wide), was officially unveiled in 2018, and the design choice is no accident, as the mysterious woman is reading a letter written by Hamlet.

América-UPAEP 2023 stamp (Philately and postage stamps) on cover from Chile

Timbre América-UPAEP 2023 (Philatélie et timbres-poste) sur lettre du Chili

"Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957)" joint stamp with Chile, on FDC from Mexico

On October 22 and October 25, 2022, the two postal administrations of Mexico and Chile respectively put into circulation a joint stamp dedicated to Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), Chilean poetess, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945, having contributed so much to Hispanic letters and considered as one of the main references of universal feminine poetry.
From a modernist tendency in her beginnings, her poetry drifts towards a personal style, with a familiar and simple language, a great musicality and a symbolism which joins the folk tradition.
Her most recurring themes are suffering, religion and political ideas.
Originally a teacher and rural educator, Gabriela Mistral is considered as one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
Children are the protagonists of most of her compositions. Her job as a teacher made her very close to the little ones and this is perhaps the best known and most admired aspect of her work.

Merci beaucoup Cecy !
But Gabriela Mistral has analyzed the most diverse topics, such as the status of women in Latin America, indigenous peoples, the education of American peoples or the need to raise the dignity and social status of children on the continent to achieve the equality of chances.
She is the first female poet to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945.
This joint stamp was designed through the eyes of Roberto Montenegro (1887-1968), pioneer of contemporary Mexican art, and his mural "Characters of History: Poetry, Portrait of Characters or Christian Ritual, Gabriela Mistral, Berta Singerman" executed in 1923 in the Secretariat of Public Education in Mexico City.

The Mexican version of this joint stamp (11.50 pesos, print run: 50,000, design: Vivek Luis Martínez Avín) is present on this official FDC (print run: 1,000) with red postmark from the city of Hermosillo. Thank you so much Cecy!

UPAEP 2021 (Tourism) stamp set on cover from Chile

Merci beaucoup Rosa !

As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories.
Like EUROPA stamps, UPAEP stamps are issued each year since 1989 by around fifteen countries.

On November 26, 2021, the Chilean Post released an interesting UPAEP series (2 stamps) dedicated to tourist sites in the country, Torres del Paine National Park and Easter Island.
These two stamps (print run: 50,000 each, design: Daniela Valentini Vergara), including the UPAEP logo at the bottom right, were used on this cover sent on May 22, 2023 from the city of San Felipe (Valparaíso region). Thank you very much Rosa!

The stamp on the left (500 pesos) is dedicated to Torres del Paine National Park, located between the Andes mountain range and the Patagonian steppe, administratively belonging to the 12th region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica and the province of Última Esperanza (south of the country).
Covering an area of approximately 200,000 hectares, this park was created in 1959 and was declared a biosphere reserve in 1978 by UNESCO.
It takes its name from three emblematic granite formations, the Torres (Towers) del Paine, giving it a strong tourist attraction. Many trails and refuges make it a major place for trekking.
The other stamp (1000 pesos) is devoted to Easter Island (Rapa Nui) and in particular to its moai, some monumental statues dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. The majority of these monoliths (887 have been identified) are sculpted in tuff mainly from the quarry of the Rano Raraku volcano.
The stamp represents in particular the Ahu Tongariki, an alignment of 15 moai including the heaviest existing (86 tons), located on the edge of Hotuiti Bay, in the eastern part of the island. This makes it a major point of interest on the island.

UPAEP 2017 (touristic places) and 2018 (pets) stamps on cover from Chile

Merci beaucoup Rosa !
The themes chosen in 2017 and 2018 for the América-UPAEP stamp issues were respectively devoted to touristic places ("Lugares turísticos" in Spanish) and pets ("Animales domésticos").
As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories.
Such as EUROPA stamps, UPAEP stamps are issued each year since 1989 by about a dozen countries.
The Chilean Post is one of the few postal administrations to have issued UPAEP stamps every year since 1989, in particular in 2017 and 2018 with stamps issued on October 31.
These two stamps (360 pesos, print run: 50,000 each) including the UPAEP logo, were used on this cover sent on March 28, 2023 from the city of San Felipe (Valparaíso region). Thank you very much Rosa!

The UPAEP 2017 stamp (above right), designed by Mauricio Navarro Gonzales, is dedicated to the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, located in the Los Lagos region. Created in 1926, it is Chile's oldest national park, now part of the Temperate Rainforests of the Southern Andes Biosphere Reserve (created in 2007).
The Petrohué waterfalls and the Osorno volcano, 2 emblematic natural sites of this region, are represented on this stamp, inside a stylized terrestrial globe, with the presence of the map of Chile on the left and the mention "sustainable tourism".
The other UPAEP stamp above (design: Daniela Valentini Vergara) is dedicated to a local breed of dog, the Chilean terrier, a small dog (5 to 8 kilos) characterized by its white dress, its head with black and tan fur, and its short tail.
Not recognized by the International Canine Federation (FCI), this breed is believed to have originated in colonial times when European immigrants settled in South America, bringing with them dogs like the Straight Hair Fox Terrier and Andalusian Winemaker, which crossed local dogs with no defined breed. They brought the Chilean terrier to life. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the breed developed in the "estates" of south-central Chile.
Much of its popularity in Chile is due to the cartoon character Condorito (created in 1949 by cartoonist René Pepo Ríos), always accompanied by his faithful Chilean Terrier "Washington".

UPAEP 2019 (Traditional dishes) stamp set on cover from Chile

Merci beaucoup Rosa !
After pets in 2018 and before architecture in 2020, tourism in 2021 or Arts in 2022, the theme chosen in 2019 for the América-UPAEP stamp issues was devoted to gastronomy and typical dishes ("Comidas típicas" in Spanish) in particular.
On October 25, 2019, the Chilean Post released an interesting UPAEP series (2 stamps) dedicated to several traditional dishes and drinks, with the national flag in the background.
These two stamps (print run: 50,000 each, design: Daniela Valentini Vergara), including the UPAEP logo at the top left, were used on this cover sent on March 28, 2023 from the city of San Felipe (Valparaíso region). Thank you very much Rosa!

The stamp on the left (370 pesos) is devoted to the Chilean cazuela, a traditional and family dish made from pieces of chicken or beef, accompanied by vegetables such as green beans, peppers, pumpkin, corn and potatoes, served in a hot broth. This dish is accompanied here by a glass of red wine and marraqueta, a type of bread made with wheat flour, water, yeast and salt.
The other stamp (480 pesos) is dedicated to a dish called "paila marina", a traditional Chilean seafood soup or light stew usually served in a paila (terracotta bowl). It usually contains a shellfish broth base cooked with different kinds of shellfish and fish, supplemented with a variety of herbs and spices such as paprika and parsley.
This dish is accompanied here by a typically Chilean non-alcoholic refreshing drink made from cooked wheat and dried peach, called "mote con huesillo", and "empanadas de pino", a large pastry turnover made from wheat flour, stuffed of meat and onions, boiled egg, olives and raisins.
Eating empanadas and drinking a "mote con huesillo" in Chile has always been considered an act of chilenidad (chilinity).

"Juan Perón - 50th anniversary of his return to Argentina" joint stamp with Argentina, on covers from Spain

Juan Domingo Perón (1895-1974) was an Argentine soldier, statesman and writer. The first president of the Argentine nation to be elected by universal suffrage in 1946, he was the last to date to have assumed the presidency of the country three times, each time following democratic elections.
He is at the origin of Peronism (whose ideology is carried today by the Justicialist Party), which has remained to this day one of the most important popular political movements in the history of Argentina.
Reelected president in 1951, he was overthrown after the bombing of the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires and the military coup of September 1955. He was then forced into exile, in Paraguay, Panama, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and finally Spain from 1960.
Perón surprised public opinion by announcing his return to Argentina on November 17, 1972. This operation "Retorno" ("Return") was led by the Secretary General of the Peronist Movement, Juan Manuel Abal Medina, and strongly supported, under the word of order "Luche y Vuelve" ("Fight and he will return"), by revolutionary Peronism.

On November 17, 1972, hundreds of thousands of people had mobilized to welcome Perón, despite the repression exercised by the dictatorship to prevent them, which is why November 17 was proclaimed by Peronism "Militancy Day".
On September 14, 2022, the Spanish Post put into circulation a stamp (€1.75, print run: 134,000) dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the return of Juan Perón to Argentina, after 12 years of exile in Spain.
To note that this is a joint stamp with Argentina even if the Argentinian version of this stamp was only issued on November 17, 2022, 50 years to the day after Perón's return.
The Spanish version of this stamp was used on this cover above, sent on December 2, 2022 from Barcelona. Thank you very much Josep!
Josep used a 2nd stamp (€1.60), issued on September 9, 2021, a joint issue with Chile, dedicated to Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), Chilean poetess, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945, having contributed so much to Hispanic letters and considered as one of the main references of universal feminine poetry.

This same joint stamp with Argentina was used on this 2nd cover above, sent on September 19, 2022 from Madrid. Thank you very much Luis!
This stamp reproduces on the left a photographic portrait of Juan Perón dating from 1968 (aged 73), during his exile in Spain and the Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, near where he lived.
The flags of the two countries are also present on this joint stamp, the Argentinian version reproducing the same portrait with, on the right, the crowd which welcomed Juan Perón when he returned to Argentina in 1972.
Juan Perón was re-elected president of the country in 1973 but died of an illness on July 1, 1974.

"Gabriela Mistral, Nobel Prize in Literature" joint stamp with Chile, on cover from Spain

On September 9, 2021, the postal administrations of Spain and Chile put into circulation a joint stamp dedicated to Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), Chilean poetess, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945, having contributed so much to Hispanic letters and considered as one of the main references of universal feminine poetry.
The Spanish version of this stamp (€1.60, print run: 160,000) was used on this cover sent on October 25, 2021 from the city of Alicante. Thank you very much Luis!
To note that the Chilean Post has issued a stamp with a different and more colorful design, created from a portrait of Gabriela Mistral in profile.
To note also that the Chilean Post had already issued many stamps dedicated to this poetess, in 1958, 1961, 1989, 1995 and 2009. A Spanish stamp had already been issued in 1989.

To note on this Spanish stamp, a map of Chile on the right and the signature of Gabriela Mistral at the bottom.

I had already been lucky enough to receive a letter sent from the Korean research station Dasan, located in the Arctic zone, in Ny-Ålesund (Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway).
I'm happy to share this time a letter sent from the 1st South Korean scientific station established in Antarctica, the King Sejong station, inaugurated in 1988 on King George Island (South Shetland islands). Thank you very much Ji-Ho!
These scientific bases are managed by the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), established in 1987.
It should be noted that South Korea inaugurated a second base in Antarctica in 2014, the Jang Bogo station, located in Terra Nova Bay on Victoria land.
This new letter was sent on May 23, 2018, as indicated on the postmark on the left (taijitu in reference to the South Korean flag, penguin and map of the Antarctic continent) applied on a definitive stamp (330 won) issued on April 3, 2017, representing the national flag "Taegeukgi".

To note this cachet in the center on the envelope including the name of this King Sejong base, the Korean Arctic and Antarctic research program and the mention of the 31st Overwintering team (for the period 2017-2018).
The postage was completed with two Chilean stamps since this letter passed through the Chilean scientific base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva located on the same King George Island, as mentioned on the cachet, also including the mention "Vuelo Antartico" ("Antarctic flight" in Spanish) and an illustration of a transport plane (making the connection with the Chilean city of Punta Arenas).
The stamp on the top right (350 pesos), issued on August 13, 2001, evokes the 24th conference of the armed forces of the American continent (23 flags present on the stamp), organized that year in Santiago.
The other stamp (260 pesos) was issued on February 9, 2002 to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the founding of the city of Valdivia (view of the city in the background, black-necked swans and Torres El Canelo).

UPAEP 2015 and 2016 stamps on cover from Chile

Probably to celebrate the first ever Olympic Games in history organized in South America, the theme chosen in 2016 for the issue of America-UPAEP stamps is entitled "Olympiads".
The theme chosen for the UPAEP stamps in 2015 was devoted to the "Fight against human trafficking".
On October 21, 2016, the Chilean Post issued a single UPAEP stamp ($ 310) about olympiads.

That stamp (design: Mauricio Navarro G, print run: 100,000), including the mention "Olimpiadas" on a Greek Ionic style column topped by the Olympic flame, was used on the left to frank the airmail letter above sent on July 4, 2017 from the city of Concepción. Thank you very much Humberto!
As in London in 2012, Chile (42 athletes engaged in 16 sports) did not win any medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (13 medals won since 1896).
Humberto also used the two stamps ($ 310 and $ 500) of the UPAEP series issued on October 26, 2015 (design: Mauricio Navarro G, print run: 100,000).
I really like the design of this series, with these barcodes symbolizing the commoditization of human bodies (a man and a woman).
Trafficking or illegal trade of persons for unlawful purposes is a crime against humanity, having unfortunately become a global phenomenon, a form of 21st century slavery due to the very high number of victims (estimated at over four millions).
In Latin America (UPAEP issues mainly concern these countries), over two million children and adolescents are victims of sexual, commercial or labour abuse.

Coupe du monde de football au Chili

FIFA World Cup in Chile

As it was the case in 1998 and 2010, the Chilean team managed to qualify for the round of 16 of the last FIFA World Cup, organized in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014.
Chile was though in a difficult group with Spain, the Netherlands and Australia and losing in the round of 16 at the penalty shootout against Brazil...
It was the ninth participation of Chile at a World Cup, with a 3rd place for best result in 1962 at home.

On June 16, 2014 (4 days after the beginning of the competition...), the Chilean Post has released a special stamp ($ 500) devoted to this FIFA World Cup.
It is that stamp (design : Mauricio Navarro G, print run : 50.000) which was used to frank the cover above mailed on July 1, 2014 from the city of Concepcion. Thank you very much Humberto :-)
That stamp shows the Brazilian flag on the contours of the country, with the blue disc transformed into a football...
For your information or as a reminder, this blue disc, including a curved white band on which the words "Order and Progress" are written, is the appearance of the sky of Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889 at 8:30 am (Proclamation of the Republic). The 27 stars symbolize the 26 federated states and the Federal District.

30 years of the University of Talca, Chile

On October 26, 1981 was officially founded the University of Talca, following the merger of the branch of the technical state university and the University of Chile in this city located 250 km south of Santiago, the capital.
On October 12, 2011, the Chilean Post (Correos de Chile) issued an interesting set of four se-tenant stamps ($ 290 each) dedicated to the 30th anniversary of this University of Talca.
Designed by Mauricio Navarro Gonzalez, this series (print run : 50,000) was used to frank the nice letter below sent on May 13, 2014 from the post office of another Chilean university, Concepcion. Thank you very much Humberto :-)
To note that this series was issued with 2 attached labels to the right, including the logo of the University of Talca as well as the portrait of abbot Juan Ignacio Molina (1740-1829), Jesuit priest, naturalist and historian born in this region of Talca, who donated his legacy to support the study of physics, astronomy, mathematics and maritime navigation.

The middle of this series features a work entitled "Trueno" ("Thunder") by the Chilean sculptor Sergio Castillo Mandiola (1925-2010), located on the campus of Talca, one of the 5 campus of this university with Curico, Linares, Santiago and Santa Cruz.
Two of the four stamps are dedicated to façades of two of the seven faculties of the university : Faculty of Law and Social Sciences (campus of Talca) and Faculty of Engineering (Campus of Curico).
The botanical garden as well as a monumental work entitled "Friso cinético" are shown on the two other stamps.
This work of art consists of 39 plates (70 meters long and 4 meters high) was made by the Chilean artist Matilde Perez (born 1920), founder of the Chilean kinetic group. She explored throughout her life the problems of visual perception, using optical vibrations similar to those used by Vasarely.
In 1969, she founded this Chilean kinetic group and created in 1975 the kinetic visual Investigation Centre of the University of Chile.
To note that this work was transferred to the campus of Talca in 2010, having been installed previously for 20 years in a commercial center of the city...

100 years of Arica-La Paz railway in Chile

20 years after the end of the War of the Pacific ("Guerra del Pacífico") that was fought between Chile and Peru and Bolivia from 1879 to 1884, a Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed in Santiago by the Chilean and Bolivian governments.
One component of this treaty was the decision to build a railway line between the coastal city of Arica and the Bolivian capital, La Paz.
Often regarded as the driest inhabited place in the world, the city of Arica, now located at the extreme northern Chile, was part of Peru before this war, which caused for Bolivia the loss of its only access to the Pacific Ocean...
Despite the signing of this treaty in 1904, diplomatic tensions between Chile and Bolivia have occurred several times in the 20th century.

This railway line between Arica and La Paz (440 km long) was officially opened on May 13, 1913, crossing the Andes at an altitude up to 4257 meters.
When this line was in operation (until 2005), it was mainly used to transport minerals or agricultural products from Bolivia. A project of rehabilitation of this line is being studied.
On May 29, 2013, the Chilean Post has issued a series of two se-tenant stamps (+ 1 label) devoted to the 100th anniversary of this railway line.
They were used to frank the cover above sent on April 2014 from the city of Concepcion. Thank you very much Humberto :-)
The two stamps ($ 310 each, print run : 50,000) feature locomotives used at different times on this line, a Esslingen 3317 manufactured in Germany and a GE U20C/U13C, more recent, made in the USA. The label on the right shows the facade of the Arica's train station.

Timbre UPAEP 2013 sur lettre du Chili

UPAEP 2013 stamp on cover from Chile

A big thank you Humberto for this nice cover posted on March 31, 2014 from the Chilean city of Concepcion :-)
To note the two round-shaped labels to the left ("Airmail" and "International priority letter"), characteristics of the Chilean Post (Correos de Chile).
The stamp on the left ($ 310), designed by Roberto Sepulveda B., is the UPAEP ("Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal") stamp issued on October 25, 2013 by the Chilean Post whose theme was fight against discrimination this year.
The theme chosen for the UPAEP stamps issued in 2014 is "Heroes and leaders", I will speak about very soon on this blog...

The stamp in the upper right ($ 310) , issued on March 18, 2014 , commemorates the 125th anniversary of the fundation of the Philatelic Society of Chile, one of the oldest cultural institutions in the country.
Designed by Mauricio Navarro Gonzalez, that stamp features, in the middle, the logo of this Philatelic Society, evoking the profile of Christopher Columbus that was engraved on the first series of stamps issued in Chile in 1853, as well as the words "Philately is culture".
To note that a stamp had already been issued in 2009 for the 120th anniversary of that same Society, as part of the celebrations of the bicentenary of Chile.
The last stamp in the lower right ($ 500), issued on September 27, 2013, is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the annexation of Easter Island (Isla de Pascua) by Chile, on September 9, 1888 precisely.
With a status of "special territory" since 2007, this island, famous for its monumental statues (Moai), is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995.
That stamp depicts a map of Chile with its national flag with, at the foreground, a reimiro, this decorative crescent-shaped pectoral ornament, with a human head at each side, once worn by women of Easter Island. It appears on the flag of the Rapanui people, the indigenous Polynesian tribe living on this island.

Revue navale du bicentenaire au Chili

Bicentenary's Naval Parade in Chile

I've recently written on this blog about the stamp issued by the French Post devoted to the bicentennial of the Latin American countries independence process, initiated in 1810.
Many postal administrations of South American countries have anticipated this anniversary in 2010 by issuing several series of commemorative stamps in recent years.
This is the case of the Chilean Post which has issued, on September 20, 2010, a new set of four se-tenant stamps devoted to the naval parade celebrating the bicentennial of Chile's independence.

This series of four stamps + two attached coupons to the right representing the shield of the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile), appear on the letter above mailed on Nov. 22, 2010 from the city of Concepcion. Thank you very much Humberto :-)
The top two stamps are featuring an old photograph of the centennial naval parade that was held in Valparaiso in 1910. The cruiser Esmeralda and the corvette Baquedano are represented on these two stamps.
The two other stamps are depicting an aerial view of the Bicentennial military naval parade held this September 20, 2010 off the cities of Valparaiso and Concón. To note that warships of the navy of Brazil, Argentina, Canada, United States and United Kingdom also participated in this review.
To note also that Chile commemorates in 2010 the bicentenary of the proclamation of an autonomous republic within the Spanish monarchy, on September 18, 1810, by a junta taking advantage of the invasion of Spain by Napoleon's troops. The independence of the country will be officially declared 8 years later...

Quand le Chili fête ses 200 ans

When Chile is celebrating 200 years

On September 18th, 1810, a revolutionary Creole junta proclaimed independence of Chile from the Spanish monarchy. They then took advantage of the fact that the legitimate king of Spain, Ferdinand VII, had been imprisoned by Napoleon 1st.
It was all the Hispanic America that then lived from 1810 autonomy or independence revolts.
The Chilean Post has began to commemorate the 200 years of this independence movement by issuing, on April 20, 2009, two souvenir sheets, each composed of stamps on stamps reproducing the 15 stamps issued on September 18, 1910 to celebrate then 100 years of independence.

One of these two sheets is included on the nice cover above, mailed on October 7, 2009 from the town of Concepcion. Thank you very much Humberto :-)
This numbered (No. 04282) sheet reproduces stamps issued one hundred years ago devoted to personalities (monuments and portraits) who participated in the campaign for independence of Chile.
Among them, the Governor Bernardo O'Higgins, who was brought to the head of the colony in 1810. But the Spaniards, once rid of Napoleon, returned in force in Chile and took advantage of the rivalries within the civil junta. The Spanish troops then won a landmark victory against the insurgents in Rancagua in October 1814.
O'Higgins took refuge in Argentina, where General José de San Martín (mentioned on a stamp above) defeated the Spaniards. They went back together to Chile and defeated the Spaniards at the Battle of Chacabuco in February 1817. O'Higgins became supreme director of Chile the same year and officially restored the country's independence on February 12, 1818.
General Carrera, also shown above, was an important figure of the period 1810-1814, called "Old Republic".
Portraits of General Blanco, vice-admiral and commander of the Chilean forces and first provisional president of the country in 1826, the British Admiral Cochrane, commander of the Chilean Navy in 1818 and Zenteno, another hero of the war of independence, are also included in the series above.

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 27ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XXVII

Merci beaucoup Aya :-)
Here is (at last !) a new issue as part of the International Philatelic campaign for the protection of the polar regions and glaciers, particularly threatened by global warming...
This very original souvenir sheet, consisting of four self-adhesive stamps was issued on June 30, 2009 by the Japan Post.
It is included on the nice cover below mailed on the date of issue from Tokyo.
Thank you very much Aya :-)

The Japan Post has used for the first time an holographic technique to design this souvenir sheet, particularly on the outlines of the four animals depicted, the nominal values, the insignia of this campaign (a stylized ice crystal) and the mention "International Polar Year 2007-2009" in the top margin of this block.
Japan Post has chosen to depict four animal species threatened by the bad effects of climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic polar regions : polar bear, Weddell seal, arctic fox and Adelie penguin.
From the forty countries participating in this campaign, Japan is one of the few to have designed a sheet educating the younger in priority. I find these stamps really successful with this beautiful background showing polar lights :-)
It's worth noting the four different cancellations applied on each stamp, one of which being inspired by the "polar bear" stamp and one showing the insignia of this world campaign.
The third red postmark (lower left) is very mysterious for me ??

To stay in the same subject, I was also lucky enough to receive the cover above, mailed on May 25th 2009 from the Chilean city of Concepcion.
Thank you very much Humberto :-)
The Chilean Post is at the root, with Finland, of this philatelic campaign.
I had already published in a previous post the series of two se-tenant stamps issued by Chile on March 18th 2009.
The Chilean Post has also issued in this same serie the numbered souvenir sheet (No. 306) above consisting of two stamps each with a high nominal value (1500 pesos). This "luxury" issue has been printing in only 3,000 copies...
The two stamps are depicting the same designs as the two se-tenant stamps with the two polar regions and the two red lines symbolizing the dangers of climate change that threaten them.
I don't exactly understand what this sheet's icefield background is refering to ??

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 14ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XIV

On 18th of March 2009 took place in Santiago the official launching of the series of stamps issued by the Chilean Post as part of the international campaign "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" ("Preservar las Regiones Polares y los Glaciares" in Spanish ) in the presence of the Ambassador of Finland, Livo Salmi.
A similar event took place that day in Helsinki to launch the Finnish souvenir sheet (I've already published the corresponding FDC on this blog) in the presence of the Ambassador of Chile, Carlos Parra.
Carlos Parra initiated the idea of a common issue between an Arctic region country, Finland, and a country close to the Antarctic continent, Chile, aiming at increase public awarness of the impact of global warming on polar areas.

This initiative became a concrete project during the official visit of the President of Chile to Finland (May 2007). About 40 postal administrations, including France, have joined this international campaign in 2009 by issuing stamps with a common insignia representing an ice crystal, designed by the Finnish graphic designer Saku Heinänen.
I'm very happy, after Finland, to show you the cover above mailed on 13th of April 2009 from Concepcion, with the two se-tenant stamps issued by the Correos Chile.
Thank you very much Humberto :-)
I like the design of these two stamps with silver parts (including crystals) and this evocation of the two polar regions, Baffin Island (Canada) and Greenland on the top stamp and the Antarctic Peninsula on the other stamp.

The set of two stamps included on the cover above was issued in 50,000 copies.
But the Chilean Post has also issued in the same series the souvenir sheet above consisting of two high value stamps (1.500 Pesos each). This "luxury" sheet has been printed in only 3,000 copies...
The two stamps incorporate the same design with the two polar regions and the two red lines symbolizing the dangers of climate change that threaten them.
I don't know however exactly what the Post of Chile has wanted to evoke with this icefield shape in the background ? Maybe some coastal parts of the Antarctic continent ?
