Merci beaucoup Tristan pour cette jolie lettre de Zambie, envoyée depuis la ville de Livingstone, ancienne capitale de la Rhodésie du Nord (la Zambie actuelle), située non loin des célèbres chutes Victoria sur le Zambèze (sud du pays, près de la frontière avec le Zimbabwe) !
La date n'est pas très lisible sur les 2 TADs mais il me semble lire "26.13.18" ??
Les 4 timbres à droite font partie d'une série, émise le 12 août 2002, consacrée à différentes espèces de guêpiers (famille des méropidés) vivant dans le pays : guêpier à front blanc - Merops bullockoides (700 anciens kwachas), guêpier de Perse - Merops persicus chrysocercus (1200 anciens kwachas), guêpier de Böhm - Merops boehmi (1400 anciens kwachas) et guêpier nain - Merops pusillus cyanostictus (1500 anciens kwachas).
Thank you very much Tristan for this beautiful letter from Zambia, sent from the city of Livingstone, the former capital of Northern Rhodesia (present-day Zambia), located not far from the famous Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river (south of the country, near the border with Zimbabwe)!
The date is not very readable on the two postmarks but it seems to read "26.13.18" ??
The four stamps on the right are part of a series, issued on August 12, 2002, devoted to different species of Bee-eaters (Meropidae family) living in the country: White-fronted Bee-eater - Merops bullockoides (700 old kwacha), Blue-cheeked bee-eater - Merops persicus chrysocercus (1,200 old kwacha), Böhm's bee-eater - Merops boehmi (1,400 old kwacha) and Little bee-eater - Merops pusillus cyanostictus (1,500 old kwacha).

A noter que ces 4 timbres ont été réémis le 26 décembre 2003 avec des valeurs faciales différentes, certains également réémis avec des surcharges en 2007, 2009, 2013 et 2014...
En 2013, le nouveau kwacha zambien a été introduit (1 nouveau kwacha = 1000 anciens kwachas), expliquant la réémission d'anciens timbres avec des surcharges en nouveaux kwachas.
C'est le cas concernant les 2 timbres identiques à gauche (4,95 nouveaux kwachas) émis le 2 mai 2014. Ce timbre (valeur permanente "C") fait partie d'une série courante de 4 timbres émise le 19 mars 2001 initialement, consacrée également à des espèces d'oiseaux, une talève sultane (Porphyrio porphyrio) ici.
A noter la mention erronée en anglais sur ce timbre ("Purple gallinule" au lieu de "Western swamphen").
Les 2 derniers timbres ci-dessus (2,50 et 3,50 nouveaux kwachas) font partie d'une série (18 timbres) émise le 26 juin 2014, consacrée à différentes espèces animales de Zambie, le lion (Panthera leo) et le lycaon (Lycaon pictus) ici.
To note that these 4 stamps were reissued on December 26, 2003 with different nominal values, some of them also reissued with surcharges in 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2014 ...
In 2013, the new Zambian kwacha was introduced (1 new kwacha = 1000 old kwacha), explaining the reissue of old stamps with surcharges in new kwacha.
This is the case concerning the two identical stamps on the left (4.95 new kwacha) issued on May 2, 2014. This stamp (permanent value "C") is part of a definitive series of 4 stamps issued on March 19, 2001 initially, also devoted to bird species, a western swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) here.
To note the erroneous mention in English on that stamp ("Purple gallinule" instead of "Western swamphen").
The last two stamps above (2.50 and 3.50 new kwacha) are part of a series (18 stamps) issued on June 26, 2014, devoted to different animal species of Zambia, the lion (Panthera leo) and the African hunting dog (Lycaon pictus) here.

A "surcharged" Livingstone on my first cover from Zambia

Livingstone "surchargé" sur ma 1ère lettre de Zambie

Très heureux de partager avec vous cette 1ère lettre reçue de Zambie, postée le 7 octobre 2014 (reçue seulement il y a quelques jours...) de la ville de Ndola, 3ème ville du pays, située dans le nord du pays près de la frontière avec la République Démocratique du Congo. Merci beaucoup Roland !
Roland a affranchi cette lettre avec un timbre (2700 anciens kwachas) très intéressant puisqu'il fait partie d'une série de 2 timbres, émise initialement le 20 janvier 2006 pour commémorer, avec un an de retard, le 150ème anniversaire de la découverte des chutes Victoria par l'explorateur écossais David Livingstone (1813-1873).
David Livingstone participa en effet au milieu des années 1850 au mouvement d'exploration et de cartographie du continent africain et fut notamment le premier européen à découvrir la vallée du Zambèze.

Roland franked this cover with a very interesting stamp (2,700 old kwacha) since it is part of a set of two stamps, first issued on January 20, 2006 to commemorate, with a year late, the 150th anniversary of the discovery of Victoria Falls by Scottish explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873).
David Livingstone indeed participated in the mid-1850s in the movement of exploration and mapping of Africa and was notably the first European to discover the Zambezi Valley.

David Livingstone découvrit le 17 novembre 1855 les chutes du Zambèze, situées aujourd'hui sur la frontière entre la Zambie et le Zimbabwe, qu'il baptisa du nom de la reine Victoria. Cette découverte eut lieu dans le cadre d'une expédition, débutée en septembre 1854, qui lui permit de devenir le premier européen à traverser l'Afrique d'ouest en est...
Sur ce timbre est représentée au 1er plan la statue de Livingstone érigée en 1934 à côté des ces chutes Victoria, sur le territoire du Zimbabwe...
Il faudra attendre novembre 2005 pour qu'une statue de l'explorateur soit érigée également à Livingstone, sur le territoire zambien (Livingstone aurait en effet découvert ces chutes Victoria en 1855 depuis la Zambie actuelle...).
Ce timbre mentionne également l'inauguration en 1905 du pont ferroviaire construit pour franchir le fleuve Zambèze, non loin des chutes Victoria.
Enfin, ce timbre est particulier puisqu'il a été surchargé à 2 reprises, une 1ère fois (quelle année ?) avec une nouvelle faciale de 4050 anciens kwachas puis une 2ème fois en 2013 lorsque le nouveau kwacha (= 1000 anciens kwachas) fut introduit, d'où cette surcharge de 4,05 nouveaux kwachas.
David Livingstone discovered on November 17, 1855 these Falls of the Zambezi river, located today on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, which he named after Queen Victoria. This discovery came as part of an expedition, started in September 1854, that allowed him to become the first European to cross Africa from west to east...
On that stamp is shown in the foreground the statue of Livingstone erected in 1934 next to these Victoria Falls, on the territory of Zimbabwe...
It was not until November 2005 that an explorer's statue was also erected in Livingstone on the Zambian territory (Livingstone would have indeed discovered the Victoria Falls in 1855 from the current Zambia...).
That stamp also mentions the inauguration in 1905 of the railway bridge built to cross the Zambezi River, near these Victoria Falls.
Finally, this stamp is special because it was surcharged at two occasions, a first time (when exactly ?) with a new nominal value of 4,050 old kwacha then a second time in 2013 when the new kwacha (= 1,000 old kwacha) was introduced, explaining this 2nd surcharge of 4.05 new kwacha.
