When mail was delivered within barrels in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Un grand plaisir de partager avec vous cette lettre envoyée le 11 septembre 2015 depuis les îles Cocos (ou îles Keeling), formant avec l'île Christmas proche, les territoires australiens de l'océan indien.
Archipel corallien formé autour de 2 atolls principaux, les îles Cocos sont situées à 800 km au sud-ouest de l'île indonésienne de Java et constituent un territoire extérieur de l'Australie depuis 1984 (rattaché à l'état d'Australie-Occidentale).
Les 2 timbres identiques ci-dessous (3$) font partie d'une série de 2 timbres, émise le 6 août 2013, consacrée à l'époque du "Barrel Mail" évoquant le transport local de courrier dans des barils, entre 1909 et 1954.
A partir de 1909, le courrier (mais aussi d'autres produits de base) était en effet délivré aux habitants des îles Cocos à l'intérieur de barils lancés à la mer par des navires de croisière (P&O et Orient Line) passant au large de ces îles.
A great pleasure for me to share with you this letter sent on September 11, 2015 from Cocos (Keeling) Islands, forming, with Christmas Island, the Australian Indian Ocean territory.
Coral archipelago formed around two main atolls, Cocos Islands are located 800 km south-west of the Indonesian island of Java and are an external territory of Australia since 1984 (Western Australia state).
The two identical stamps below ($ 3) are part of a series of two stamps, issued on August 6, 2013, devoted to the era of the "Barrel Mail" evoking the local mail transport within barrels, between 1909 and 1954.
From 1909, the mail (but also other essential items) was indeed delivered to residents of Cocos Islands inside barrels dropped in the sea from passing P&O and Orient Line ships.

Les habitants venaient récupérer ces barils à bord de jukongs, la pirogue traditionnelle de ces îles.
Pour la réception ou l'envoi de courrier, ces barils étaient utilisés mais aussi des boîtes de conserves d'où des empreintes postales appliquées parfois sur les lettres ("Tin Can Mail" ou "Barrel Mail").
Ce système cessa en 1954 lorsque ces îles furent desservies par voie aérienne.
Le 3ème timbre utilisé ci-dessus (1,40$) est un timbre australien faisant partie d'une série de 7 timbres, émise le 24 mars 2014, consacrée aux emblèmes floraux des différents états et territoires du pays, une orchidée (Dendrobium phalaenopsis) ici, symbole de l'état du Queensland depuis 1959.
Concernant l'histoire postale de ce territoire, les 1ers timbres portant la mention "Cocos (Keeling) Islands" ont été émis en 1963 et son service postal, indépendant de l'Australie jusque là, a été placé sous la responsabilité de l'Australia Post en 1994.
Des timbres spécifiques à ce territoire sont toutefois émis depuis (1 à 2 série par an) mais sont valables sur tout le territoire australien (idem pour les timbres de l'île Christmas et du territoire antarctique australien). De la même manière, comme cela est le cas sur cette lettre, les timbres australiens peuvent aussi être utilisés dans tous ces territoires...
Cocos inhabitants collected these barrels aboard jukongs, the traditional canoe of these islands.
For receiving or sending mail, these barrels were used but also tin cans, explaining why some special "Tin Can Mail" or "Barrel Mail" postal cachets were sometimes applied to letters.
This system ceased in 1954 when a regular air service was first introduced.
The third stamp used above ($ 1.40) is an Australian stamp being part of a set of seven stamps, issued on March 24, 2014, dedicated to the floral emblems of the states and territories of the country, an orchid (Dendrobium phalaenopsis) here, the symbol of the state of Queensland since 1959.
Concerning the postal history of these islands, the first stamps bearing the mention "Cocos (Keeling) Islands" were issued in 1963 and its postal service, independent from Australia so far, was placed under the responsibility of Australia Post in 1994.
Some specific stamps to this territory are however issued since (1 to 2 series each year) but are valid throughout Australia (the same thing for the stamps of Christmas Island and Australian Antarctic Territory). Similarly, as it is the case on this letter, Australian stamps can also be used in all those territories...

En 1809, Isaac Nichols devint le premier receveur des postes de la colonie de Nouvelle-Galles du sud, marquant les débuts du système postal en Australie.
La poste australienne a bien sûr émis plusieurs séries de timbres en 2009 consacrées aux 200 ans de la poste dans le pays, dont un bloc-feuillet de 10 timbres (2 bandes horizontales de 5 timbres), émis le 13 octobre 2009, montrant différents employés actuels de l'Australia Post dans leur environnement "postal".
4 timbres se-tenant de la bande inférieure de ce bloc-feuillet figurent sur la lettre ci-dessous postée le 8 décembre 2009 de Sydney.

In 1809, Isaac Nichols was appointed as the first postmaster of the New South Wales Colony, marking the beginning of the postal system in Australia.
Australia Post has of course issued several series of stamps in 2009, devoted to the 200 years of the Post in the country, including a souvenir sheet of 10 stamps (two horizontal rows of five stamps), issued on October 13, 2009, showing different current employees by Australia Post in their "postal" environment.
Four se-tenant stamps from the lower row of this sheet are included on cover below mailed on December 8, 2009 from Sydney.

J'ai donc l'honneur (!) de vous présenter ci-dessus Mme Norma Thomas, M. John Marsh, Mme Anne Brun et M. Russell Price certainement très heureux de voir leur portrait sur ces timbres officiels de la poste australienne :-)
Avec le slogan "Our People, Your Post" inclus sur ces 10 timbres, la poste australienne a voulu ainsi rendre hommage à ses employés qui rendent service chaque jour aux australiens et qui lui permettent aussi de gagner de l'argent...
La poste australienne a choisi 10 personnes travaillant dans chacun des 6 états et territoires australiens, incluant sans doute l'île Christmas et les îles Cocos, j'y reviens ci-dessous :-)
A noter enfin sur la lettre ci-dessus l'intéressant timbre à date du bureau de poste principal de Sydney avec sa tour de l'horloge représentée. Cet édifice historique de Sydney, construit entre 1866 et 1891, fut le siège du système postal de Nouvelle-Galles du sud jusqu'en 1996 lorsqu'il fut vendu par la poste australienne...

With the slogan "Our People, Your Post" included on these 10 stamps, Australia Post wanted to pay tribute to its employees who provide daily outstanding service to Australians and who also allow Australia Post to earn money...
Australia Post has selected 10 persons working in each of the six Australian states and territories, including probably Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands about which I'll speak below :-)
It's worth also noting on this letter the interesting postmark from the Sydney GPO with its clock tower featured. This historic building of Sydney, built between 1866 and 1891, was the headquarters of the postal system in New South Wales until 1996 when it was sold by Australia Post to private owners...

Jean-Pierre (encore merci !) m'a également envoyé la lettre ci-dessus provenant d'un autre territoire australien, plus exotique, celui des îles Cocos ou îles Keeling, formant avec l'île Christmas proche, les territoires australiens de l'océan indien.
Ce courrier n'a malheureusement pas été oblitéré...
Les 2 timbres à 55c font partie d'une série de 4 timbres, émis le 21 avril 2009, commémorant les 400 ans de la 1ère observation des îles Cocos par un européen, le capitaine William Keeling (Compagnie anglaise de l'Inde orientale), à qui cet archipel doit aussi son nom.
Le timbre de droite évoque un bateau du 17ème siècle semblable à celui de Keeling lorsqu'il visita cet endroit. L'autre timbre évoque la visite d'un certain Charles Darwin en 1836, lors de son 2ème voyage scientifique à bord du Beagle.
Les 5 autres timbres ci-dessus, émis le 13 juin 2006, font partie d'une feuille de 20 timbres différents consacrés à la faune (oiseaux et poissons) vivant dans cet archipel corallien et ses 2 atolls principaux.
Concernant l'histoire postale de ce territoire, les 1ers timbres portant la mention "Cocos (Keeling) Islands" ont été émis en 1963 et son service postal, indépendant de l'Australie jusque là, a été placé sous la responsabilité de l'Australia Post en 1994. This cover has unfortunately not been canceled...
The two 55c stamps are part of a series of four stamps, issued on April 21, 2009, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first European sighting of the Cocos Islands by captain William Keeling (English East India Company), giving also its name to this archipelago.
The right stamp evokes a 17th century ship similar to one used by Keeling when he visited this place. The other stamp is about the visit of a certain Charles Darwin in 1836 in its second survey voyage aboard The Beagle.
The other five stamps above, issued on June 13, 2006, are part of a sheet of 20 different stamps devoted to wildlife (birds and fish) living in these coral islands and its two main atolls.
