"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamps on cover from Iraq

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On December 4, 2024, the Iraqi Post put into circulation two stamps dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
These two stamps (2,000 IQD, design: Asim Muhammad Kamil) almost identical, one with Latin characters, the other only Arabic characters, have been printed in the same sheetlet (print run: 3,330) composed of 4 stamps with Latin characters and 5 stamps with Arabic characters.
Three of these stamps were used on the above cover sent by registered mail on December 29, 2024 (note this erroneous mention "2014" on the postmarks) from the city of Basra. Thank you very much Arkan!
The official logo of this 150th anniversary created by the UPU (Sonja Denovski) is reproduced at the bottom left on these stamps, depicting the facade of the first post office (opened to the public in 1907) located in the Al-Midan district of Baghdad, dating from the time of the Ottoman Empire. The bicycle is a symbol of the postman at that time.
Iraq has been a member of the UPU since April 22, 1929.

"Arab League Summit 2022" and "World Post Day 2022" joint stamps on cover from Iraq

During the 41st session of the Permanent Arab Postal Committee, held in Algiers on June 8 and 9, 2022, Algeria's proposal for the issue of a unified Arab postage stamp for 2022 was approved, with the theme of 31st Arab League Summit to be held in Algiers on November 1-2, 2022.
The Iraqi Post put this joint stamp into circulation on November 1, 2022, also issued by the postal administrations of Algeria, Egypt, Oman, Djibouti, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
This Iraqi stamp (1000 dinars, print run: 3,000) was used in two copies on this pretty cover sent by registered mail on October 25, 2023 from the city of Basra. Thank you very much Arkan!
This stamp represents the emblem of the Arab League with a map and the flag of Algeria in its lower part.
The same day, the Iraqi Post issued a 2nd joint stamp (1000 dinars, print run: 3,000) dedicated to World Post Day, used at the top right on this envelope.

The UPU (Sonja Denovski) designed a poster illustrating the theme of this World Post Day 2022, "Post for Planet" as well as a kit (stamp, envelope and First Day cancellation) suggesting that the postal administrations of member countries put stamps reproducing it into circulation.
This was the case for Iraq and around 25 postal administrations around the world (Serbia, Belarus, Croatia, Russia, Fiji, Colombia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Thailand, etc.).
Arkan used three other stamps (1000 dinars each) on this envelope evoking diplomatic relations between Iraq and three different countries: Spain (70th anniversary) with a stamp issued on February 5, 2017 (Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and Ishtar Gate in Babylon), Armenia (20th anniversary) with a stamp issued on March 9, 2020 (UNESCO World Heritage Sites: ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral and Maran Temple/Hatra archaeological site) and India (70th anniversary) with a stamp issued on February 17, 2022 (India Gate in New Delhi and reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate in Babylon).

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad and poets' stamps on cover from Iraq

A big thank you Arkan for this lovely cover sent by registered mail on October 25, 2023 from Basra, the 2nd city of the country, franked with different recent stamps (issued by the Iraqi Post in 2022 and 2023) with the theme of poetry and Nadia Murad.
Nadia Murad (born 1993) received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 (along with Congolese gynecologist and human rights activist Denis Mukwege), to recognize "her efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict".
Nadia Murad, a Yazidi human rights activist today, was kidnapped in 2014 by Islamic State jihadists, as a sex slave and repeatedly threatened with execution. She managed to escape and arrived in Germany in 2015 and told the international community what had happened to her.
In 2016, she was already appointed United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.
On April 3, 2022, the Iraqi Post put into circulation a souvenir sheet (1,500 dinars, print run: 4,000) dedicated to Nadia Murad, used at the top right on this envelope.

Arkan used other stamps dedicated to Iraqi poets, including one (1000 dinars, print run: 10,000, design: Sa'ad Ghazi), bottom right, issued on July 25, 2022, dedicated to Karim Al-Iraqi (1955-2023).
Karim Al-Iraqi left behind a rich cultural heritage including popular poetry, songs and plays. He has composed more than 70 songs and was honored by UNICEF for writing the "best humanitarian song" with his poem "Tadhkur" performed by Iraqi artist Kazem Al-Saher.
The other 1000 dinars' stamp above (print run: 10,000, design: Sa'ad Ghazi), issued on August 10, 2022, pays tribute to Muhammad Mahdi Al-Jawahiri (1899-1997), considered one of the greatest Arab poets of the 20th century, also considered the national poet of Iraq. One of his best-known poems, "My Brother Jaafar", is dedicated to his brother who died in 1948 during the Al-Wathbah uprising in Baghdad.
The last two stamps (750 and 1250 dinars, print run: 20,000 each), issued on September 27, 2023, are dedicated to the poet Naziq al-Malaika (1923-2007) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth.
Iraqi women are pioneers among Arab women in gaining their rights in the 20th century. In 1959, Iraq appointed the first Arab woman minister and names like Naziq al-Malaika and painter Suad al-Attar are among the key figures in Iraq's modern artistic history.
Naziq al-Malaika, poet and university professor, became known as one of the founders of the free verse poetry movement in Arabic. Much of her work speaks about the fear of oblivion, such as her poem "Lamentation over a Worthless Woman".

Pope's visit, Christmas, Mandaean rites and Arba'in stamps on cover from Iraq

A big thank you Arkan for this lovely cover sent by registered mail on October 25, 2023 from Basra, the 2nd city of the country, franked with different recent stamps (issued by Iraqi Post in 2021, 2022, 2023) all having religion as their theme.
Islam is the country's official religion according to the constitution, with approximately 95% of the population being Muslim, with a majority of Shiites (55%) present mainly in the south and in the Sadr City district of Baghdad. The Sunnis are present in the center, in the Baghdad region as well as in Assyria.
One of the oldest Christian communities in the Middle East lives in Iraq even though it declined sharply (less than 1% of the population) after the war in 2003 and the emergence of the Islamic State.
At the invitation of the Iraqi government and the Chaldean Catholic Church, Pope Francis came to Iraq from March 5 to 8, 2021, the first trip by a pope to this country. During his visit, the pope visited the cities of Ur, Baghdad, Najaf (where he met Shiite Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani), Qaraqosh, Erbil and Mosul.
On September 19, 2021, the Iraqi Post put into circulation a series (3 stamps + 2 souvenir sheets, design: Sa'ad Ghazi) dedicated to this visit of the Pope to Iraq.
The 3 stamps appear at the bottom right on this envelope: portrait of the pope in front of the Sayidat al-Nejat Cathedral, a building of the Syriac Catholic Church in Baghdad (500 dinars), visit of the pope to Ur (750 dinars) and meeting with Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani (1000 dinars).

On October 31, 2010, this Sayidat al-Nejat Cathedral was the target of an Islamist attack perpetrated by a group close to Al-Qaeda during Sunday mass which left 68 dead.
The souvenir sheet (1000 dinars, Nativity scene) above and the stamp at the top left (500 dinars, decorated tree) are part of the same series (design: Sa'ad Ghazi) issued on January 19, 2021 (?), dedicated to the celebrations of Christmas and the birth of Jesus by Catholics.
The 2 stamps in the center (250 dinars - baptism day and 500 dinars - bible) are part of a series (design: Asim Kamil) issued on August 10, 2022, dedicated to the community of Mandaeans of Iraq, designated under the name of Sabeans (less than 5000 people). The rite of baptism is essential in Mandaeism, an Abrahamic, Baptist, monotheistic and Gnostic religion.
The last stamp above (1500 dinars) is part of a series (2 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet, design: Asim Mohammed) issued on September 11, 2023, dedicated to the Shiite commemoration of Arba'in which marks the end of the mourning of Imam Hussein ben Ali. Arba'in takes place the twentieth of Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar, i.e. 40 days after Ashura.
For Shiites, the day of Ashura is actually the day of commemoration of the massacre of Imam Hussein and 72 members of his family and supporters by the Umayyad Caliphate during the Battle of Karbala in 680.
The Arba'in pilgrimage is an important pilgrimage in Iraq for Shiites to Karbala. In 2019, the "Provision of services and hospitality during the Arba'in visitation" was included by UNESCO on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Today Arba'in is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, with around 17 million participants.

Série "JO de Londres" en Irak

London Olympics stamp set from Iraq

If I'm not wrong, the Iraq Post has waited until the last day of the Summer Olympic Games in London, August 12, 2012, to issue its impressive series (4 stamps + 2 miniature sheets) devoted to this major sport event...
I was lucky to receive this complete stamp set on the beautiful cover below sent on April 30, 2013 by registered mail from Baghdad. Thank you very much Mohanad :-)
The mentions in Arabic on the blue postmarks mean "Baghdad Post Office" and "Registered Airmail".
The four stamps (from 250 to 1,000 dinars) depict some events in archery, gymnastics, fencing and athletics.

The Iraqi Post is regularly issuing some "big size" unperforated stamps of the same type as the two ones used above (1,000 dinars each). Don't really know if it's a stamp or a miniature sheet ?
The stamp in the upper left shows the Olympic rings in the middle and various athletes featured in five different sports.
They seem to be real athletes with Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt at the top left. I did not recognize the other four athletes ?
The other stamp in the upper right is interesting because it features the aquatic center built for these games, including the "London 2012" logo used when London was a candidate city. The official logo of these games (without the word "London", without the Olympic rings and without the "TM" trademark mention) is also included in the top right...
The Olympic flame, a javelin thrower as well as the two mascots Wenlock (Olympics) and Mandeville (Paralympics) are also featured.
The Iraqi delegation was composed of only eight athletes (engaged in 7 sports) at the London Games (the 13th country's participation in the Olympics) and did not win any medal...
Iraq has only won an Olympic medal, a bronze medal in weightlifting at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

Shrine and Arab Postal Day - First cover from Iraq !

Thank you very much Mohanad for this very nice letter mailed on December 5, 2012 from the Iraqi city of Karbala :-)
Mohanad has used three stamps (250 Dinars each) of the series, issued on June 16th 2012, devoted to the Al-Khadimiya mosque and shrine located in the northern neighbourhood of Baghdad.
To note that a souvenir sheet (500 Dinars) was also issued in this set that was printed with golden parts (domes and minarets).

Al-Khadimiya is a holy place of Shi'a Islam and contains the tombs of the 7th and 9th Twelver Shī‘ah Imāms, Mūsá al-Kādhim and Muhammad al-Taqī (8th and 9th century AD).
Since 2004, this shrine has unfortunately been the target of many terrorist attacks.
Mohanad has also used above a fourth stamp (250 Dinars), issued on November 26th 2012, devoted to the Arab Postal Day.
As a reminder, this stamp is a joint issue by the member countries of the Arab League. To date, only half of these 22 countries have actually issued this stamp...

Here is above the other side of that envelope on which were applied two hand postmarks dated December 6th 2012. I do not really know why ?
