"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamps on cover from Argentina

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On August 28, 2024, the Argentine Post issued a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
This stamp (2,300 ARS, print run: 12,000) was used in four copies on the above cover sent on November 5, 2024, from Buenos Aires. Thank you very much, Gabriel!
This stamp was designed based on the official logo for this 150th anniversary created by the UPU (by Sonja Denovski) and features the associated slogan and the flag of Argentina, a member of the UPU since April 1, 1878.
The fifth stamp (300 ARS, print run: 20,000), issued on August 17, 2023, celebrates 125 years of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Japan. This stamp symbolizes the Argentine flag represented by an "enso," a Japanese word meaning "circle," which represents the fullness of simplicity. In this case, fullness, integrity, and harmony are attributes that resemble the diplomatic relations between the two countries. At the center of the stamp, the sun of the Japanese flag, embodying the union between the two countries.

"Birds - 100 years of diplomatic relations" joint stamp set with Argentina, on cover from Poland

As part of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Poland, the postal administrations of the two countries put into circulation, on November 25, 2022, a nice joint series (2 stamps) devoted to species of local passerines.
More than 500,000 Argentineans are of Polish origin, making Argentina the 2nd country in Latin America with the largest Polish community abroad, after Brazil.
The first significant arrival of Polish immigrants to Argentina occurred in the late 1800s when Poles fleeing poverty and war arrived in Argentina to start a new beginning with many settlements in the province of Misiones, in the northeast of the country.
Many thanks to Bartek for this lovely cover sent on October 7, 2024 from the city of Komorniki, stamped with this joint set!
These two Polish stamps (4 PLN, print run: 120,000 each) have been printed se-tenant in the same sheetlet composed of 4 pairs of stamps.

Each stamp features the Polish and Latin name of the bird depicted, as well as the theme of this joint issue ("Birds of Argentina and Poland"), with the flags of the two countries appearing in the upper margin, as in the example above.
The stamp on the left (design: Maria de Los Angeles Nores) depicts a rufous hornero (Furnarius rufus), in its characteristic nest, the national bird of Argentina since 1928.
This bird, present in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia, has become the center of many legends and songs belonging to the folklore of the peoples of South America.
The rufous hornero's nest is made of reeds and mud and resembles a closed clay pot or bread oven (as shown on the stamp).
The other stamp (design: Paweł Myszka) is dedicated to a familiar bird in Poland and Western Europe, the crested tit (Lophophanes cristatus). Its plumage has a very pronounced black crest on the head (the female has a shorter crest than the male).
To note this illustrated postmark, in circulation from June 15 to December 31, 2024, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the National Museum of Agriculture in Szreniawa, a village located near Poznań, in the center-west of the country.
Founded in 1964, this museum obtained the status of national museum in 1975. It presents many open-air exhibitions, including examples of agricultural tools and machines, beehives and other historical objects.

Among her many distinctions, the Casa de Cultura Americana in Mexico awarded her the Premio América. In 1962 she published "Universal Poetry", a selection of her artistic activity. In 1981 she published her memoir, "My Two Lives".

Merci beaucoup Cecy !

"Juan Perón - 50th anniversary of his return to Argentina" joint stamp with Spain, on cover from Argentina

Juan Domingo Perón (1895-1974) was an Argentine soldier, statesman and writer. The first president of the Argentine nation to be elected by universal suffrage in 1946, he was the last to date to have assumed the presidency of the country three times, each time following democratic elections.
He is at the origin of Peronism (whose ideology is carried today by the Justicialist Party), which has remained to this day one of the most important popular political movements in the history of Argentina.
Reelected president in 1951, he was overthrown after the bombing of the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires and the military coup of September 1955. He was then forced into exile, in Paraguay, Panama, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and finally Spain from 1960.
Perón surprised public opinion by announcing his return to Argentina on November 17, 1972. This operation "Retorno" ("Return") was led by the Secretary General of the Peronist Movement, Juan Manuel Abal Medina, and strongly supported, under the word of order "Luche y Vuelve" ("Fight and he will return"), by revolutionary Peronism.

On November 17, 1972, hundreds of thousands of people had mobilized to welcome Perón, despite the repression exercised by the dictatorship to prevent them, which is why November 17 was proclaimed by Peronism "Militancy Day".
On November 17, 2022, the Argentine Post released a stamp (400 pesos) dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the return of Juan Perón to Argentina, after 12 years of exile in Spain.
To note that this is a joint stamp with Spain even if the Spanish version of this stamp was issued on September 14, 2022, without respecting the 50th anniversary to the day of this return...
The Argentinian version of this joint stamp was used in 2 copies on this cover sent on April 10, 2023 from Buenos Aires. Thank you very much Gabriel!
This stamp reproduces on the left a photographic portrait of Juan Perón dating from 1968 (aged 73), during his exile in Spain as well as the crowd that welcomed Juan Perón when he returned to Argentina in 1972.
The flags of the 2 countries are also present on this joint stamp, the Spanish version reproducing the same portrait with, on the right, the Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, near where he lived.
Juan Perón was re-elected president of the country in 1973 but died of an illness on July 1, 1974.

A big thank you Gabriel for this lovely cover sent on March 16, 2023 from Buenos Aires, partly stamped with this joint series!
These two Argentinian stamps have been printed se-tenant in the same sheet composed of 8 pairs of stamps and 4 labels including the official logo of these 100 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"World Post Day 2022 - Post for Planet" joint stamp on cover from Argentina

World Post Day is celebrated annually on October 9, a decision of the Universal Postal Congress in 1969 in Tokyo to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
The objective of World Post Day is to raise awareness of the role of the post in the daily lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development. Accordingly, the 192 UPU member countries are encouraged to organize their own national activities to celebrate the event, ranging from introducing or promoting new postal products and services to organizing open days in post offices, mail centers and postal museums...
The theme for World Post Day 2022 was "Post for Planet" to highlight the elements of daily business that Posts are already making more sustainable to ensure a greener planet for future generations.
The UPU (Sonja Denovski) had designed a poster illustrating this slogan "Post for Planet" as well as a kit (stamp, First Day envelope and postmark) suggesting that the postal administrations of member countries put stamps reproducing it into circulation.

This was the case for around 25 postal administrations around the world (Serbia, Belarus, Croatia, Russia, Fiji, Colombia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Thailand ...).

The Argentine Post also put this joint stamp (150 pesos) into circulation on October 11, 2022, used on this cover, sent on November 28, 2022 from Buenos Aires. Thank you very much Gabriel!
The mention "World Post Day" is present on this stamp at the top in Spanish, next to the UPU emblem, as well as the flag of Argentina, at the bottom right.
This artwork illustrates a simplified visual message about the Post's contribution to an environmentally sustainable future. As the central image, planet Earth has a clear distinction between night and day. In addition to representing contrast, night and day also represent continuity and evolution.
The top left stamp (400 pesos) was issued on September 5, 2022 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the death of Eva Perón (1919-1952).
Eva Perón, wife of General Juan Perón who presided over Argentina (from 1946 to 1955 then from 1973 to 1974), experienced a meteor trajectory. Actress, trade unionist and politician, she was only 33 years old when she died in 1952, carried away by a devastating uterine cancer. The popularity of the one who has never stopped fighting for the cause of the poorest is then immense.
Evita, as her compatriots affectionately call her, is one of Argentina's icons and her image as Madonna of the poor is intact among a population that worships her.
Gabriel used, among others, a 3rd stamp (105 pesos), issued on April 19, 2021 to celebrate the 200 years of the Federal Police, depicting its historic headquarters inaugurated in Buenos Aires in 1888 in the background and its emblem in the center, a rooster.

"Don Orione" joint stamp with Italy, Argentina and SMOM, on cover from Vatican City

On May 16, 2022, the four postal administrations of Italy, Vatican City, Argentina and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) put into circulation a joint stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Don Luigi Orione (1872-1940).
Don Luigi Orione was an Italian Catholic priest who notably founded the Little Work of Divine Providence and the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity. Venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church, he is celebrated on March 12 and is the Patron Saint of the Abandoned.
This apostle of mercy dedicated his life to the unfortunate and the suffering. In 1908 and 1915, earthquakes in Silica and Calabria are calamitous. Don Orione helps and organizes solidarity.
After the First World War, Don Orione multiplies the works in the service of the affected population: agricultural colonies, works of assistance for those who have lost everything, schools, orphanages.
Don Orione sends missionaries to Brazil (1913), Argentina and Uruguay (1921) among others and makes two trips to Latin America (in 1922 and from 1934 to 1937).

On October 26, 1980, Don Orione was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Nearly 24 years later, he was canonized by this same pope on May 16, 2004.
The intact body of Don Orione is placed in a glass shrine, made in 1991, exposed to the veneration of the faithful in the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Guardia in Tortona.
The Vatican version of this stamp (€2.40, print run: 176,000), printed in France by Cartor, was used on this cover sent on January 2, 2023 from the Vatican City. Thank you very much Salvatore!
This stamp reproduces a work by the Spanish painter Raùl Berzosa (born in 1979) representing Don Luigi Orione, kept at the General Directorate of Religious of Don Orione of the Pius XII Community, in the Vatican City.
Don Orione is represented with a rose in his left hand, with on the right the Mother of Divine Providence and on the left Christ holding the Vatican Basilica over his heart. With his right hand, Don continues to light the sacred fire of charity.
To note that the 4 postal administrations have put this stamp into circulation in a sheetlet of 4 stamps.

"Argentina in Antarctica" miniature sheet on cover from Argentina

Merci beaucoup Gabriel !
The Argentine Post regularly issues series of stamps dedicated to the presence of the country in Antarctica and in particular to its 6 permanent scientific bases and its 7 seasonal stations.
Argentine Antarctica ("Antártida Argentina") is an area of Antarctica claimed by Argentina as part of its national territory. It consists of the Antarctic Peninsula and a triangular section extending to the South Pole, bounded by the meridians 25° West and 74° West and the parallel 60° South.
This region overlaps with British and Chilean claims to Antarctica. Argentina's Antarctic claim is based on its continuous presence in the region since 1904 and the region's proximity to the South American continent. Argentina's claim to this area is subject to the Antarctic Treaty.
On August 16, 2022, Correo Argentino put into circulation a new miniature sheet (4 stamps, total price: 800 pesos) dedicated to this Argentine presence in Antarctica, used on this pretty letter sent on November 7, 2022 from Buenos Aires. Thank you very much Gabriel!

This miniature sheet represents in particular an Antarctic landscape (230 pesos), a scientific expedition (130 pesos) and a chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus, 130 pesos) living mainly in the South Sandwich and South Shetland Islands. Its name was given to him because of the black line that runs across the chin.
The 4th stamp (310 pesos) shows the "ARA Almirante Irízar", an Argentine Navy icebreaker and research vessel, built in 1977 and handed over to the Argentine Republic in 1978.
Since then, it has participated, year after year, in the summer Antarctic campaign, supplying the Argentine Antarctic bases and those of other countries located on the Antarctic Peninsula. As the flagship of the Antarctic Naval Force, it is the largest icebreaker in the entire southern hemisphere.
Gabriel completed his postage with two ordinary postal unit ("UP") stamps issued on July 22, 2019, dedicated to some of the 37 national parks listed in the country, Ciervo de los Pantanos National Park (established in 2018, province of Buenos Aires, 20 pesos) and Predelta National Park (established in 1992, province of Entre Ríos, 50 pesos) here.

"Juan Perón - 50th anniversary of his return to Argentina" joint stamp with Argentina, on covers from Spain

On September 14, 2022, the Spanish Post put into circulation a stamp (€1.75, print run: 134,000) dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the return of Juan Perón to Argentina, after 12 years of exile in Spain.
To note that this is a joint stamp with Argentina even if the Argentinian version of this stamp was only issued on November 17, 2022, 50 years to the day after Perón's return.
The Spanish version of this stamp was used on this cover above, sent on December 2, 2022 from Barcelona. Thank you very much Josep!
Josep used a 2nd stamp (€1.60), issued on September 9, 2021, a joint issue with Chile, dedicated to Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), Chilean poetess, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945, having contributed so much to Hispanic letters and considered as one of the main references of universal feminine poetry.

This same joint stamp with Argentina was used on this 2nd cover above, sent on September 19, 2022 from Madrid. Thank you very much Luis!
This stamp reproduces on the left a photographic portrait of Juan Perón dating from 1968 (aged 73), during his exile in Spain and the Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, near where he lived.
The flags of the two countries are also present on this joint stamp, the Argentinian version reproducing the same portrait with, on the right, the crowd which welcomed Juan Perón when he returned to Argentina in 1972.
Juan Perón was re-elected president of the country in 1973 but died of an illness on July 1, 1974.

"Don Orione" joint stamp with Italy, Argentina and Vatican City, on FDC from SMOM

On October 26, 1980, Don Orione was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Nearly 24 years later, he was canonized by this same pope on May 16, 2004.

The SMOM version of this stamp (€2.40 for a shipment up to 20g to countries in Africa, America and Asia - print run: 140,000) is present on the official FDC above with, as usual, the mention "Poste Magistrali" on the postmark. Thank you very much Salvatore!
This stamp reproduces a work by the Spanish painter Raùl Berzosa (born in 1979) representing Don Luigi Orione, kept at the General Directorate of Religious of Don Orione of the Pius XII Community, in the Vatican City. With his right hand, Don Orione continues to light the sacred fire of charity.

For information, the Order of Malta is issuing its own stamps since November 15, 1966, but it's only possible to use them on letters sent to 58 countries having concluded a postal agreement with the Order. It's unfortunately not the case of France (I received this FDC inside an envelope sent from Italy).

The Italian version of this stamp ("B Zone 2" rate - €2.40 for a shipment up to 20g to countries in Africa, America and Asia - print run: 320,000) was used on this letter sent on May 21, 2022 from the city of Verona. Thank you very much Salvatore!
To note this special postmark put into circulation during the 134th Veronafil philatelic exhibition, organized from May 20 to 22, 2022, paying tribute to women engaged in volunteering.

Mercosur and UPAEP 2021 stamps on cover from Argentina

The member countries of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur in Spanish), an economic and political community grouping together 4 South American countries (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay), have made a habit of issuing every year (since 1997) some stamps having a common theme.
After the fashion theme in 2020, the theme chosen in 2021, useful insects, was normally declined in the 4 member countries.
The Argentine Post unfortunately issues these stamps late, which is the case with its Mercosur series (2 stamps) put into circulation on May 31, 2021, illustrating the theme of the environment, chosen for the year 2019 ...
These two stamps (70 pesos) are present at the top left on this pretty cover sent on April 11, 2022 from Buenos Aires. Thank you very much Gabriel!
These two stamps are devoted to the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), a large insectivorous mammal native to Central and South America.

This vulnerable species, living in the north of the country, is recognizable by its elongated snout, bushy tail, long front claws and distinctly colored coat. It feeds mainly on ants and termites, using its front claws to dig them up and its long (up to 60 cm) sticky tongue to collect them.
The official logo of Mercosur (constellation of the Southern Cross) is included on these 2 stamps.
The other two large format stamps on the right (70 pesos), issued on June 7, 2021, illustrate the theme chosen by UPAEP that year, tourism.
As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories. Like EUROPA stamps, UPAEP stamps are issued each year since 1989 by around fifteen countries.
These 2 stamps represent landscapes of two Argentine national parks, El Impenetrable National Park (Chaco province, north of the country) created in 2014 and Los Alerces National Park (Chubut province, Argentine Patagonia) created in 1937.
Gabriel completed his postage with an ordinary postal unit ("UP" - 200 pesos) stamp issued on July 22, 2019, also dedicated to one of the 37 national parks listed in the country, the Lanín National Park (province of Neuquén ) here.
The 6th stamp above (80 pesos), in a round shape, is part of a souvenir sheet (3 stamps) issued on October 25, 2021, dedicated to solar and lunar (total and partial) eclipses observed over parts of the Argentine territory in 2021.

"National flowers" joint set with Argentina, on FDC from Bulgaria

On August 30, 2021, one month ahead of the Argentinian Post, the Bulgarian Post put into circulation a nice joint series (2 stamps) on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the 2 country.
Diplomatic relations with Argentina were indeed established in 1931, at a time when, outside Europe, Bulgaria only had relations with the United States and Iran. The main reason is that in 1929 there were still some 10,000 Bulgarian economic or political emigrants in Argentina. The Bulgarian community has successfully integrated into the local society and the Argentine authorities have shown a good attitude towards it.
This joint series is devoted to the national flowers of the 2 countries, respectively the oilseed rose (Bulgaria) and the ceibo flower (Argentina), also the national flower of Uruguay.

The Bulgarian version of this se-tenant series (1 leva and 3 leva, print run: 10,000 each), designed by Kalina Slavina, is present on this nice official FDC sent by registered mail on October 1, 2021 from Sofia. Thank you very much Borislav!
To note that the Bulgarian cancellation was designed from the sun appearing on the Argentinian flag while the Argentinian postmark features a lion appearing on the coat of arms of Bulgaria.
Ribbons in the colors of the flags of the 2 countries as well as the geographical maps of the 2 countries are featured on the left on this envelope, behind this ugly sticker applied a priori by the French Post ...
To note the presence of the flags of the 2 countries on these stamps, depicting in particular a rose (Rosa Oleaginosa), imported into Bulgaria several centuries ago by the Ottomans. Bulgaria is today the leading producer of rose essential oil, mainly of the Rosa Damascena variety, the greatest wealth of the Kazanlak region (Valley of roses), in the center of the country.
The red flower of the tree called Ceibo (Erythrina crista-galli) has been the national flower of Argentina since a decree of 1943 and November 22 is the official day for its celebration (only since 2008). Its cluster flowering takes place from October to April.
