EUROPA 2026 (70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps) s/s on FDC from Belgium

Bloc-feuillet EUROPA 2026 (70ème anniversaire des timbres EUROPA) sur FDC de Belgique 

L'année 2026 marque le 70ème anniversaire des timbres EUROPA, une initiative philatélique lancée pour renforcer les relations entre les pays européens et promouvoir une paix et une unité durables.
Émis pour la première fois en 1956 par six nations – la Belgique, la France, l'Allemagne, l'Italie, le Luxembourg et les Pays-Bas, membres fondateurs de l'Union européenne – ce programme s'est étendu progressivement à 53 organisations postales participantes.
L'an dernier, le groupe de travail Timbres et Philatélie de PostEurop a organisé un concours interne pour choisir un motif commun sur le thème "70ème anniversaire du timbre EUROPA : Unis par...".
Guidés par des valeurs partagées telles que la communication, l'innovation, la coopération et des racines communes, les membres ont soumis 15 propositions créatives, chacune présentant une vision unique. 
Suite au vote de 50 organisations postales, ce concours a été remporté par la poste finlandaise (Posti), devant la poste de Bosnie-Herzégovine (Sarajevo) et la poste luxembourgeoise.
C'est donc le projet de l'artiste et graphiste Klaus Welp qui figure sur les timbres EUROPA émis en 2026. 
The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps, a philatelic initiative launched to strengthen relations between European countries and promote lasting peace and unity.
First issued in 1956 by six nations – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, founding members of the European Union – this program has gradually expanded to include 53 participating postal organizations.
Last year, PostEurop's Stamps and Philately Working Group organized an internal competition to choose a common design on the theme "70th Anniversary of the EUROPA Stamp: United by...".
Guided by shared values ​​such as communication, innovation, cooperation, and common roots, the members submitted 15 creative proposals, each presenting a unique vision.
Following a vote by 50 postal organizations, the Finnish Post (Posti) won the competition, ahead of the Post of Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo) and the Post of Luxembourg.
The design by artist and graphic designer Klaus Welp will therefore be featured on the EUROPA stamps issued in 2026.

Le 13 avril 2026 (vente Premier Jour, prévente le 11 avril 2026 à La Hulpe), la poste belge Bpost a mis en circulation un bloc-feuillet EUROPA (tirage : 26447), hors de prix (comme de coutume), constitué de 2 timbres au tarif "3 Europe" (8,85€ chacun - envoi PRIOR en Europe non normalisé jusqu'à 100g).

Le timbre conçu par Klaus Welp figure à droite, l'autre timbre, conçu par Wim Vandersleyen, célébrant la diversité européenne, en utilisant des marqueurs ADN – symboles de ce qui nous unit et nous distingue – pour refléter nos racines communes et nos cultures uniques.
L'autre timbre EUROPA allie éléments abstraits et symboliques. La ligne pointillée ascendante en diagonale représente à la fois la perforation du timbre et le travail progressif de PostEurop. Les sept points, reliés par une ligne droite, symbolisent soixante-dix ans d'efforts concertés des opérateurs postaux à travers le continent.
Les dégradés et les motifs pointillés en arrière-plan forment une surface harmonieuse et dynamique, reflétant le joyeux mélange de couleurs du drapeau européen et symbolisant l'unité de tous les États membres.
On April 13, 2026 (First Day, preview sale on April 11, 2026 in La Hulpe), the Belgian Post Bpost released a very expensive EUROPA souvenir sheet (print run: 26,447), consisting of two stamps at the "3 Europe" rate (€8.85 each - non-standardized PRIOR shipping within Europe up to 100g).

The stamp designed by Klaus Welp is featured on the right; the other stamp, designed by Wim Vandersleyen, celebrates European diversity, using DNA markers – symbols of what unites and distinguishes us – to reflect our common roots and unique cultures. 
The other EUROPA stamp combines abstract and symbolic elements. The diagonally ascending dotted line represents both the perforation of a stamp and the progressive work of the PostEurop. The seven dots, connected by a straight line, symbolize seventy years of unified effort by postal operators across the continent.
The blending gradients and dotted patterns in the background form a cohesive and vibrant surface, reflecting the joyful mix of colours from the European flag and symbolizing the unity of all member nations. 

EUROPA 2025 (National Archaeological Discoveries) souvenir sheet on FDC from Belgium

Après une pause en 2023 (un seul timbre EUROPA "1 Europe" émis), la poste belge Bpost a repris ses mauvaises habitudes en 2024 et cette année en mettant en circulation, le 7 avril 2025 (vente Premier Jour, prévente le 5 avril 2025 à Waimes), un bloc-feuillet EUROPA hors de prix, constitué de 2 timbres au tarif "3 Europe" (8,34€ chacun - envoi en Europe non normalisé jusqu'à 100g).
Pour rappel, PostEurop a choisi le thème des Découvertes archéologiques nationales pour les timbres EUROPA émis en 2025, soulignant l'importance de préserver et de valoriser les témoignages du passé, favorisant ainsi une meilleure sensibilisation pour les générations futures.
La poste belge a décliné ce thème en "Archéologie : Prendre soin du passé, prendre soin de l'avenir" pour ce néanmoins joli bloc-feuillet (tirage : 31597) conçu par Geert Wille.

A noter également l'application sur l'enveloppe de 2 autres TADs Premier Jour concernant d'autres séries de timbres émises le même jour (Ernest Solvay et les cantons germanophones de l'est du pays). 
A travers ce bloc-feuillet, la poste belge illustre l'évolution des moyens humains et techniques mis en place par les archéologues entre la fin du 19ème siècle et aujourd'hui.
After a break in 2023 (only one "1 Europe" EUROPA stamp issued), the Belgian Post Bpost resumed its bad habits in 2024 and this year by issuing, on April 7, 2025 (First Day Sale, preview sale on April 5, 2025 in Waimes), an overpriced EUROPA souvenir sheet consisting of two stamps at the "3 Europe" rate (€8.34 each - non-standardized shipping within Europe up to 100g).
As a reminder, PostEurop chose the theme of National Archaeological Discoveries for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2025, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting evidence of the past, thus promoting greater awareness for future generations.
The Belgian Post adapted this theme to "Archaeology: Caring for the Past, Caring for the Future" for this nonetheless attractive souvenir sheet (print run: 31,597) designed by Geert Wille.

Also note the application on the envelope of two other First Day cancellations relating to other stamp series issued on the same day (Ernest Solvay and the German-speaking cantons of the east of the country).
Through this souvenir sheet, the Belgian Post illustrates the evolution of the human and technical resources implemented by archaeologists between the end of the 19th century and today.  

Ce bloc-feuillet montre en effet une photographie ancienne prise lors des fouilles archéologiques en novembre 1892 (à l'initiative du baron Alfred de Loë) de l'un des 3 tumuli gallo-romains de Grimde, combinée avec l'image contemporaine de Yannick De Smet travaillant sur un dessin de reconstruction 3D d'une maison datant de l'âge de fer (entre 800 et 50 avant J.-C.), au centre.
Ce dessin 3D fait partie d'un projet "Maisons à travers le temps" (en collaboration avec l'archéologue Johan Hoorne de De Logi & Hoorne) consistant à reconstruire une maison représentative de chaque période majeure, du Néolithique au Haut Moyen Âge.
Cette même maison reconstituée de l'âge de fer est reproduite sur un des 2 timbres de ce bloc-feuillet, l'autre timbre illustrant des mesures effectuées par un archéologue sur un squelette humain excavé.
Au 19ème siècle, les archéologues passaient des journées entières à trancher, pelleter et brosser, dans l'espoir d'exhumer quelque artefact extraordinaire. Les archéologues d'aujourd'hui consacrent beaucoup plus de temps à l'analyse, à la planification et à la documentation. L'archéologue moderne tente principalement de reconstituer un pan de l'histoire d'un lieu particulier.
Les progrès technologiques ont radicalement changé l'archéologie. Avant de creuser aujourd'hui, les archéologues détectent d'abord les bâtiments, les routes et autres structures souterrains. Ils et elles le font par exemple au moyen de radars et de lasers. Les drones sont quant à eux utiles pour scanner les fouilles et les mesures sont entièrement prises à l'aide d'un GPS. Grâce à toutes ces technologies, les archéologues creusent désormais de manière beaucoup plus ciblée, en laissant intactes d'importantes couches historiques. La numérisation en 3D et la réalité virtuelle sont également de plus en plus utilisées pour reconstituer numériquement des sites, ce qui permet aux chercheuses et chercheurs ainsi qu'au grand public de découvrir l'antiquité sous un jour nouveau.
This souvenir sheet shows an old photograph taken during archaeological excavations in November 1892 (on the initiative of Baron Alfred de Loë) of one of the three Gallo-Roman burial mounds at Grimde, combined with a contemporary image of Yannick De Smet working on a 3D reconstruction drawing of a house dating from the Iron Age (between 800 and 50 BC), in the center.
This 3D drawing is part of a "Houses Through Time" project (in collaboration with archaeologist Johan Hoorne of De Logi & Hoorne) consisting of reconstructing a representative house from each major period, from the Neolithic to the Early Middle Ages.
This same reconstructed Iron Age house is reproduced on one of the two stamps in this souvenir sheet, the other stamp illustrating measurements taken by an archaeologist on an excavated human skeleton.
In the 19th century, archaeologists spent entire days slicing, shoveling, and brushing, hoping to unearth some extraordinary artifact. Today's archaeologists devote much more time to analysis, planning, and documentation. The modern archaeologist primarily attempts to reconstruct a piece of the history of a particular place.
Technological advances have radically changed archaeology. Before digging today, archaeologists first detect buildings, roads, and other underground structures. They do this using radar and lasers, for example. Drones, on the other hand, are useful for scanning excavations, and measurements are taken entirely using GPS. Thanks to all this technology, archaeologists now dig in a much more targeted manner, leaving important historical layers intact. 3D scanning and virtual reality are also increasingly being used to digitally reconstruct sites, allowing researchers and the general public to discover antiquity in a new light.  

"Olympic Games Paris 2024" stamp on FDC from Belgium

Les 7 et 8 juin 2024, la poste belge bpost a mis en prévente un timbre consacré aux jeux olympiques de Paris 2024 (33ème olympiade) organisés du 26 juillet au 11 août 2024.
Ce timbre (tarif "1 Monde" pour un envoi normalisé jusqu'à 50g - 2,88€ actuellement à partir de 5 timbres achetés), conçu par Geert Wille et imprimé en feuillet de 5 timbres (tirage : 17125 feuillets), a été utilisé sur la lettre ci-dessous avec le TAD (emblème de "Team Belgium") de cette prévente à Bruxelles (Premier Jour le 10 juin 2024). Merci beaucoup Jacques ! 
Ce timbre a pour slogan "Le rêve olympique - Nous sommes Team Belgium, Ensemble nous allons marquer l'histoire" et a été conçu à partir du logo officiel "The Embrace" de Team Belgium, créé spécialement par la créatrice de mode Alexa Fairchild (ancienne olympienne belge en équitation) pour ces jeux olympique de Paris 2024, avec un stade d'athlétisme dans le fond.

This stamp ("1 World" rate for a standardized letter up to 50g - €2.88 currently from 5 stamps purchased), designed by Geert Wille and printed in a sheetlet of 5 stamps (print run: 17,125 sheetlets), was used on the cover below with the cancellation (emblem of "Team Belgium") of this pre-sale in Brussels (First Day on June 10, 2024). This stamp has the slogan "The Olympic Dream - We are Team Belgium, Together we'll make history" and was designed from the official logo "The Embrace" of Team Belgium, created especially by fashion designer Alexa Fairchild (former Belgian Olympian in equestrian) for these Olympic Games in Paris 2024, with an athletics stadium in the background.

"The Embrace" représente l'étreinte entre deux personnes, arborant les couleurs du drapeau belge. Il symbolise deux athlètes qui se prennent dans les bras à l'arrivée, ou deux supporters qui s’étreignent dans un grand moment d'émotion. "The Embrace" incarne la connectivité, l'émotion de vivre et de partager quelque chose ensemble.
On retrouvait ce même symbole sur les tenues des athlètes belges à Paris, une forte délégation composée de 87 hommes et 85 femmes, engagés dans 21 sports, dont les 2 équipes de hockey sur gazon et l'équipe féminine de basketball.
Il s'agissait de la plus importante délégation belge depuis les années 1920, avec un excellent bilan de 10 médailles remportées (dont 3 en or) dans 4 sports différents (cyclisme, athlétisme, judo, taekwondo), un autre record depuis les jeux de 1924... à Paris.
"The Embrace" represents the embrace between two people, displaying the colours of the Belgian flag. It symbolises two athletes hugging each other at the finish line, or two supporters hugging each other in a moment of great emotion. "The Embrace" embodies connectivity, the emotion of living and sharing something together.
This same symbol was found on the outfits of the Belgian athletes in Paris, a strong delegation of 87 men and 85 women, involved in 21 sports, including the two field hockey teams and the women's basketball team.
This was the largest Belgian delegation since the 1920s, with an excellent record of 10 medals won (including 3 gold) in 4 different sports (cycling, athletics, judo, taekwondo), another record since the 1924 games... in Paris. 

"150 years of the UPU" stamp (a Guinness World Record) on FDC from Belgium

En 2024, l'Union Postale Universelle (UPU) célèbre son 150ème anniversaire. Le 9 octobre 1874, 22 pays (dont la Belgique) se sont réunis pour signer le Traité de Berne, créant ainsi l'Union générale des postes, qui deviendra ensuite l'Union Postale Universelle (à partir de 1878).
150 ans plus tard, l'UPU unit à présent les réseaux postaux de 192 pays membres. Elle a ainsi concrétisé la vision de ses fondateurs, qui consistait à établir un territoire postal unique pour servir toutes les populations, où qu'elles se trouvent.
Avec le thème de ce 150ème anniversaire, "150 ans d'engagement pour la communication et le développement des peuples à travers le monde", l'UPU célèbre cette réalisation et renforce son engagement à servir les populations pour les années et siècles à venir.
Tout au long de cette année 2024, l'UPU organise une série d'événements et des campagnes visant à rendre hommage à la richesse de son passé, à la pertinence de son présent et aux promesses de son avenir, en utilisant en particulier le hashtag #UPU150 sur les réseaux sociaux.
In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrates its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries (including Belgium) gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU will roll out a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

Ce timbre est inspiré du timbre déjà émis en 1999 par la poste belge pour commémorer le 125ème anniversaire de l'UPU, représentant des lettres voyageant autour du globe.
Mais ce timbre est surtout spécial car il constitue un Guinness World Record, incluant 2024 mots en microtexte (liste des 192 pays membres, de Afghanistan à Zimbabwe, répétée plusieurs fois) !
La Belgique avait déjà détenu ce record en 2014 avec un timbre "Journée de la femme" incluant 606 mots, avant d'être détrônée en 2017 par les Nations Unies avec un timbre "Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme" incluant 1969 mots.
De nombreuses autres administrations postales vont émettre des timbres/entiers postaux sur ce thème en 2024 (la plupart le 9 octobre), en utilisant la charte graphique de l'UPU (Azerbaïdjan, Géorgie, Thaïlande, Hong Kong...) ou non (Roumanie, Nations Unies, Serbie, France...).

This stamp is inspired by the stamp already issued in 1999 by the Belgian Post to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the UPU, representing letters traveling around the globe.
But this stamp is especially very special because it constitutes a Guinness World Record, including 2024 words in microtext (list of the 192 member countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, repeated several times)!
Belgium had already held this record in 2014 with a "Women's Day" stamp including 606 words, before being dethroned in 2017 by the United Nations with a "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" stamp including 1969 words.
Many other postal administrations will issue stamps/postal stationeries on this theme in 2024 (most on October 9th), using the UPU graphic charter (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Thailand, Monaco, Hong Kong, etc.) or not (Romania, United Nations, Serbia, France, etc.).

Après une pause en 2023 (un timbre EUROPA "1 Europe" émis), la post belge bpost a repris ses mauvaises habitudes en mettant en circulation, le 2 avril 2024 (vente Premier Jour, prévente le 29 mars 2024 à Anvers), un bloc-feuillet EUROPA hors de prix, constitué de 2 timbres au tarif "3 Europe" (7,98€ chacun - envoi en Europe non normalisé jusqu'à 100g)...
Pour rappel, PostEurop a choisi le thème de la faune et flore subaquatiques pour les timbres EUROPA émis en 2024, décliné en "vie sous-marine menacée" pour ce néanmoins joli bloc-feuillet belge (tirage : 35147) conçu par l'illustrateur scientifique Joris De Raedt (né en 1987).

Ce TAD représente une des 2 espèces illustrées sur ces timbres EUROPA, l'anguille d'Europe (Anguilla anguilla), un poisson migrateur amphihalin (au cours de sa vie l'anguille va passer par des milieux présentant différents taux de salinité). Cette espèce est en forte régression depuis les années 1980 et est aujourd'hui considérée comme une espèce menacée ou présentant un risque d'extinction en Europe, en particulier à cause de la surpêche des alevins (civelles) lorsqu'ils pénètrent dans les rivières.

As a reminder, PostEurop has chosen the theme of underwater fauna and flora for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2024, declined in "threatened underwater life" for this nevertheless pretty Belgian minisheet (print run: 35,147) designed by the scientific illustrator Joris De Raedt (born 1987).

This postmark represents one of the two species illustrated on these EUROPA stamps, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), an amphihaline migratory fish (during its life the eel will pass through environments with different levels of salinity). This species has been in sharp decline since the 1980s and is today considered to be an endangered species or at risk of extinction in Europe, in particular because of the overfishing of fry (glass eels) when they enter rivers.

L'autre timbre est consacré à l'aiguillat commun (Squalus acanthias), une espèce de petit requin très prisée pour la consommation humaine. En Belgique francophone, dans la région de Chimay, ce requin (statut "vulnérable" selon l'UICN) est utilisé pour réaliser des escavèches (escabèches) d'aiguillat.
Joris De Raedt a conçu ce feuillet en collaboration avec l'Institut flamand de la mer, en représentant dans les marges d'autres espèces en voie de disparition, à l'état de croquis non colorés, donnant l'impression que les dessins s'estompent, tout comme leur population dans les mers.
Parmi ces espèces, le requin pèlerin (Cetorhinus maximus), considéré comme le second plus grand poisson vivant actuellement sur Terre après le requin-baleine, l'ange de mer commun (Squatina squatina) et le pocheteau gris (Dipturus batis), deux espèces dont les populations ont diminué de 80% ces 50 dernières années, ou l'esturgeon d'Europe (Acipenser sturio), autrefois abondant dans la Meuse (espèce éteinte en Wallonie depuis 1850).
A noter ce vernis spécial appliqué sur ce feuillet, simulant des rayons de soleil (depuis le coin supérieur droit), créant une ondulation comme dans l'eau de la mer (ce même vernis a été appliqué sur les 2 poissons illustrant les timbres).
The other stamp is dedicated to the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), a species of small shark highly prized for human consumption. In French-speaking Belgium, in the Chimay region, this shark ("vulnerable" status according to the IUCN) is used to make dogfish escavèches (escabèches).
Joris De Raedt designed this minisheet in collaboration with the Flemish Maritime Institute, representing other endangered species in the margins as uncolored sketches, giving the impression that the drawings are fading, just like their population in the seas.
Among these species, the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), considered the second largest fish currently living on Earth after the whale shark, the angelshark (Squatina squatina) and the common skate (Dipturus batis), two species whose populations have declined by 80% over the last 50 years, or the European sea sturgeon (Acipenser sturio), once abundant in the Meuse river (species extinct in Wallonia since 1850).
To note this special varnish applied to this minisheet, simulating sun rays (from the upper right corner), creating a ripple as in sea water (this same varnish was applied to the two fish illustrating the stamps). 

"Surprising glass art - Anna Torfs" stamp on FDC from Belgium

Timbre "Surprenant art du verre - Anna Torfs" sur FDC de Belgique

Lorsque l'on évoque l'art du verre en Belgique, on pense souvent aux vases colorés du Val Saint-Lambert qui ornent les salons de nombreux ménages belges.
Au 19ème siècle, l'industrie verrière était le troisième pilier industriel de la région de Charleroi. Au début du 20ème siècle, Charleroi était même la principale cité productrice et exportatrice de verre à vitre dans le monde.
Le 22 janvier 2024 (vente Premier Jour à Bruxelles), la poste belge bpost a mis en circulation un intéressant bloc-feuillet "Surprenant art du verre" composé de 5 timbres différents, mettant l'accent sur l'art verrier contemporain, dans le cadre d'une collaboration avec le Musée du Verre de Charleroi et la GlazenHuis de Lommel.

When we talk about glass art in Belgium, we often think of the colorful vases from Val Saint-Lambert which adorn the living rooms of many Belgian households.
In the 19th century, the glass industry was the third industrial pillar of the Charleroi region. At the beginning of the 20th century, Charleroi was even the main city producing and exporting window glass in the world.
On January 22, 2024 (First Day sale in Brussels), the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation an interesting souvenir sheet "Surprising glass art" composed of 5 different stamps, emphasizing contemporary glass art, in the part of a collaboration with the Glass Museum of Charleroi and the GlazenHuis of Lommel.

Cette émission coïncide avec le 50ème anniversaire de la création du Musée du Verre de Charleroi, situé dans un ancien entrepôt de lampes, sur le site minier du Bois du Cazier.
Le timbre ci-dessus, incluant un vernis transparent spécial, est consacré à une œuvre en verre de l'artiste Anna Torfs (née en 1963), faisant partie d'une collection appelée "Parts High" (2011).
Anna Torfs a étudié l'architecture d'intérieur à l'École d'architecture Sint-Lucas de Bruxelles. Au début des années 1990, elle s'installe en République tchèque, où elle commence à collaborer avec d'éminents verriers locaux et crée sa première collection de verre en 2002. Avec Dries Coppens, elle a bâti une marque à succès et de renommée mondiale.
Le thème central du travail d'Anna Torfs est la capacité du verre à capturer, réfléchir et absorber la lumière. Ses objets en verre, rendus dans une belle gamme de couleurs profondes, présentent une combinaison frappante de géométrie stricte et de nature organique et poétique.
L'œuvre d'art illustrant le fond du bloc-feuillet est une référence à la mine. Cette création "Lumière s'il vous plaît" de Myriam Louyest est une interprétation des lampes de mineur. Elles symbolisent l'âme des mineurs ayant succombé à la catastrophe de 1956, qui fit 262 morts.
This issue coincides with the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Charleroi Glass Museum, located in a former lamp warehouse, on the Bois du Cazier mining site.
The stamp above, including a special clear varnish, is dedicated to a glass work by artist Anna Torfs (b. 1963), part of a collection called "Parts High" (2011).
Anna Torfs studied interior architecture at the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Brussels. In the early 1990s, she moved to the Czech Republic, where she began collaborating with prominent local glassmakers and created her first glass collection in 2002. With Dries Coppens, she built a successful and globally renowned brand.
The central theme of Anna Torfs' work is the ability of glass to capture, reflect and absorb light. Her glass objects, rendered in a beautiful range of deep colors, feature a striking combination of strict geometry and organic, poetic nature.
The work of art illustrating the background of the souvenir sheet is a reference to the mine. This creation "Lumière s'il vous plaît" by Myriam Louyest is an interpretation of miner's lamps. They symbolize the souls of the miners who succumbed to the disaster of 1956, which left 262 dead.

Le chimiste belge naturalisé américain Leo Baekeland (1863-1944) a révolutionné la recherche sur la photographie mais surtout les matières plastiques en inventant la Bakélite. Ce plastique brun-noir fit une apparition très remarquée dans la vie de tous les jours, et ce jusqu'au milieu du 20ème siècle.
La bakélite fut utilisée pour des objets tels que les prises murales, les interrupteurs, les coques des radios, les cendriers, les téléphones, les moulins à café ou encore les sèche-cheveux.
Le 22 janvier 2024 (vente Premier Jour à Bruxelles), la poste belge bpost a mis en circulation un timbre consacré à Leo Baekeland (1863-1944) à l'occasion du 80ème anniversaire de sa disparition.

The Belgian (naturalized American) chemist Leo Baekeland (1863-1944) revolutionized research on photography but especially plastic materials by inventing Bakelite. This brown-black plastic made a very noticeable appearance in everyday life until the middle of the 20th century.
Bakelite was used for objects such as wall sockets, switches, radio shells, ashtrays, telephones, coffee grinders and even hair dryers.

Ce timbre montre Leo Baekeland dans son laboratoire (avec la structure de la Bakélite dans le fond), la vignette représentant un rasoir à fermeture papillon conçu en Bakélite.
La bakélite a donné un sacré coup d'accélérateur au processus d'industrialisation et au développement de la production de masse. À l'époque, vers la fin du 19ème siècle, on cherchait des alternatives aux matières premières naturelles, exotiques même parfois, telles l'ébène ou l'ivoire.
Celles-ci étaient devenues de plus en plus chères en raison de la demande croissante et donc plus difficiles à obtenir et à convertir en un produit de masse abordable. 
Bien que de nombreuses matières aient été expérimentées, la Bakélite s'est de loin imposée comme le matériau de prédilection pour de nouveaux produits. Il s'agissait d'un plastique simple à produire, peu coûteux et facile à presser dans un moule métallique. Mais ses propriétés d'isolation et de résistance à la chaleur étaient tout aussi importantes.
La bakélite était souvent appelée "le matériau aux mille usages".
A noter que la poste belge avait déjà émis un timbre consacré à Leo Baekeland en 1955, dans une série illustrant différents scientifiques belges.

Bakelite gave a big boost to the industrialization process and the development of mass production. At the time, towards the end of the 19th century, we were looking for alternatives to natural raw materials, sometimes even exotic, such as ebony or ivory.
These had become increasingly expensive due to growing demand and therefore more difficult to obtain and convert into an affordable mass product.
Although many materials have been experimented with, Bakelite has by far emerged as the material of choice for new products. It was a plastic that was simple to produce, inexpensive, and easy to press into a metal mold. But its insulation and heat resistance properties were just as important.
Bakelite was often called "the material of a thousand uses".
To note that the Belgian Post had already issued a stamp dedicated to Leo Baekeland in 1955, in a series illustrating different Belgian scientists.

Conçu par Leen Depooter, ce timbre a été imprimé en feuillet de 10 timbres (tirage : 15640 feuillets) et représente un portrait de Frederick Banting, développeur canadien de l'insuline, avec un des premiers flacons d'insuline, une seringue et le symbole du sang et du diabète en bas à droite.

Designed by Leen Depooter, this stamp was printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps (print run: 15,640 sheetlets) and represents a portrait of Frederick Banting, Canadian developer of insulin, with one of the first insulin vials, a syringe and the blood and diabetes symbol at the bottom right.

Pour honorer cette découverte en 1921, le pédiatre et chercheur canadien Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941) a reçu le Prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine en 1923, avec le scientifique britannique John Macleod (l'autre découvreur canadien Charles Best a été oublié).
Ce timbre représente un flacon d'insuline de l'époque, avec étiquette mentionnant l'université de Toronto où les premiers tests ont été effectués.
D'autres administrations postales (Canada, Suisse, Pakistan, Macédoine du Nord) ont émis des timbres sur ce thème en 2021 pour commémorer le 100ème anniversaire de cette découverte.
To honor this discovery in 1921, the Canadian pediatrician and researcher Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941) received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923, along with British scientist John Macleod (the other Canadian discoverer Charles Best has been forgotten).
This stamp represents a bottle of insulin from the period, with a label mentioning the University of Toronto where the first tests were carried out.
Other postal administrations (Canada, Switzerland, Pakistan, North Macedonia) issued stamps on this theme in 2021 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this discovery.

On October 23, 2023 (First Day of issue in Brussels), the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation two booklets (10 self-adhesive stamps each) dedicated to the Christmas festivities, representing in particular Christmas symbols made up of punctuation marks, a Santa's head for the Non Prior domestic "1" rate (currently €1.43) and Christmas tree decorations for the "1" Europe rate (€2.66 for a standard shipment up to 50g).
A red stamp from the "Europe" booklet (print run: 62,255 booklets), designed by Geert Wille, is present on the cover below, with First Day cancellation from Brussels. Thank you very much Johan!

Cette année, le graphiste de bpost Geert Wille a en effet opté pour une approche innovante et contemporaine dans la conception de ces timbres de Noël. Point de neige, ni de décor hivernal traditionnel, mais des figures bien reconnaissables constituées de signes de ponctuation, comme cette tête de Père Noël constituée de 7 signes, reproduite sur le TAD Premier Jour ci-dessus.
Pour concevoir les 5 boules de Noël représentées sur le timbres ci-dessus, Geert Wille a utilisé 15 signes de ponctuation, 10 parenthèses, 1 @, 1 #, 1 &, 1 * et 1 =. 
This year, bpost graphic designer Geert Wille has indeed opted for an innovative and contemporary approach in the design of these Christmas stamps. No snow, no traditional winter decor, but very recognizable figures made up of punctuation marks, like this Santa's head made up of 7 marks, reproduced on the First Day postmark above.
To design the five Christmas' balls featured on the stamp above, Geert Wille used 15 punctuation marks, 10 parentheses, 1 @, 1 #, 1 &, 1 * and 1 =.

Le 28 août 2023 (vente Premier Jour à Bruxelles, prévente le 26 août 2023 à Marke-Courtrai), la poste belge bpost a mis en circulation un intéressant bloc-feuillet composé de 10 timbres (5 timbres différents, tirage : 26088 blocs-feuillets) intitulé "Splendeur des araignées", illustrant 5 espèces différentes recensées dans le pays.
Un de ces 10 timbres (tarif domestique "1" normalisé NON PRIOR entre 0 et 50g - 1,36€ actuellement à partir de 10 timbres achetés, 1,39€ à l'unité) figure sur cette lettre avec TAD Premier Jour (toile d'araignée) de Bruxelles. Merci beaucoup Johan !
A travers ce bloc-feuillet, la poste belge a souhaité rappeler que de nombreuses personnes ont peur des araignées, mais c'est souvent l'inconnu qui fait peur. Ces animaux sont en réalité on ne peut plus utiles, puisqu'ils nous débarrassent d'insectes nuisibles comme les moustiques par exemple.

Through this souvenir sheet, the Belgian Post wanted to remind us that many people are afraid of spiders, but it is often the unknown that scares them. These animals are in reality very useful, since they rid us of harmful insects such as mosquitoes for example.

Cette série a été conçue par Marijke Meersman en collaboration avec l'Association belge d'arachnologie "ARABEL" qui a proposé à la poste belge une liste d'araignées emblématiques ayant des couleurs et des caractéristiques différentes.
Parmi ces espèces, l'Épeire fasciée (Argiope bruennichi) représentée sur le timbre ci-dessus, avec son spectaculaire abdomen rayé (blanc, noir et jaune). Bien en place au centre de sa toile (de forme ovale) et la tête vers le bas, elle est parfois abondante dans les herbes hautes.
Compte tenu de sa grande taille, cette araignée s'est spécialisée dans la chasse aux gros insectes : criquets, sauterelles, guêpes, abeilles, frelons, libellules, cigales. 
A noter que l'acte de reproduction est souvent fatal pour le mâle comme pour d'autres espèces d'araignées. Il est généralement dévoré après l'accouplement...
This series was designed by Marijke Meersman in collaboration with the Belgian Arachnology Association "ARABEL" who proposed to the Belgian Post a list of emblematic spiders with different colors and characteristics.
Among these species, the Wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) shown on the stamp above, with its spectacular striped abdomen (white, black and yellow). Well placed in the center of its web (oval in shape) and with its head downwards, it is sometimes abundant in tall grass.
Given its large size, this spider specializes in hunting large insects: locusts, grasshoppers, wasps, bees, hornets, dragonflies, cicadas.
To note that the act of reproduction is often fatal for the male as for other species of spiders. It is generally devoured after mating...

"2023 WDSF World Breaking Championship" stamp on FDC from Belgium

Timbre "Championnats du monde de breakdance 2023" sur FDC de Belgique

La 4ème édition des championnats du monde de breaking (ou breakdance) avait lieu en Belgique, à Louvain, du 23 au 24 septembre 2023, sous l'égide de la Fédération mondiale de danse sportive (WDSF).
Le breaking est un style de danse hip-hop développé à New York dans les années 1970, caractérisé par ses mouvements de corps saccadés, son aspect acrobatique et ses figures au sol. Un danseur de breakdance est appelé b-boy (pour un homme) ou b-girl (pour une femme).
Plus de 250 danseurs ont participé à ces championnats du monde (des battles dont l'issue est votée par un jury), remportés par Victor Montalvo (USA) chez les hommes et Dominika Banevič (Lituanie) chez les femmes. 
Pour rappel, le breaking (16 hommes et 16 femmes) sera au programme des prochains jeux olympiques de Paris en 2024, avec une volonté du CIO de rendre les jeux olympiques plus attractifs pour la jeunesse. 
The 4th edition of the breaking (or breakdancing) world championships took place in Belgium, in Louvain, from September 23 to 24, 2023, under the aegis of the World Dance Sports Federation (WDSF).
Breaking is a style of hip-hop dance developed in New York in the 1970s, characterized by its jerky body movements, its acrobatic aspect and its figures on the ground. A breakdancer is called a b-boy (for a man) or b-girl (for a woman).
More than 250 dancers took part in these world championships (battles whose outcome is voted on by a jury), won by Victor Montalvo (USA) for men and Dominika Banevič (Lithuania) for women.
As a reminder, breaking (16 men and 16 women) will be on the program for the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, with the IOC wanting to make the Olympic Games more attractive for young people.

Conçu par le graphiste indépendant Davy Denduyver dans un style pop art, ce timbre représente l'un des mouvements de base du breaking appelé headspin (le danseur se tient en équilibre à la verticale sur la tête, tout en effectuant des mouvements de rotation en poussant sur le sol avec les mains).
Le motif en partie en damier en arrière-plan fait référence à la surface sur laquelle ont lieu les battles de breaking.

Designed by independent graphic designer Davy Denduyver in a pop art style, this stamp represents one of the basic movements of breaking called headspin (the dancer balances vertically on the head, while performing rotational movements by pushing on the ground with the hands).
The partly checkerboard pattern in the background refers to the surface on which breaking battles take place.

C'est le cas pour cette lettre envoyée le 16 août 2023 depuis Ganshoren, commune bilingue située dans le nord-ouest de la région de Bruxelles-Capitale, avec un affranchissement mixte (51 francs belges = 1,26€ + un timbre "jonquille" au tarif permanent domestique = 1.39€, soit 2.65€, le tarif pour un envoi en Europe jusqu'à 50g). Jacques a utilisé ici des timbres faisant partie de séries EUROPA émises entre 1958 et 1979. Pour rappel, les premiers timbres EUROPA ont été émis en 1956 par 6 pays (France, Belgique, Allemagne, Pays-Bas, Italie, Luxembourg), avec des illustrations communes entre 1956 et 1973 (sauf en 1957) puis en 1984, 2000, 2016 et 2023.
A noter aussi que la mention CEPT (Conférence européenne des administrations des postes et télécommunications) figure sur les timbres EUROPA émis entre 1960 et 1992 (remplacée ensuite par le logo EUROPA).
Le timbre à gauche (2,50 francs) fait partie de la série (2 timbres) émise le 13 septembre 1958 avec une illustration commune (par André Van der Vossen - Pays-Bas), la paix au service des idées européennes.  
Like France, Belgium still authorizes the use of stamps in Belgian francs, provided of course that the rate in force in euros is reached (€1.00 = 40.3399 Belgian francs).
This is the case for this letter sent on August 16, 2023 from Ganshoren, a bilingual municipality located in the north-west of the Brussels-Capital region, with mixed postage (51 Belgian francs = €1.26 + a "daffodil" permanent domestic rate = €1.39, or €2.65, the rate for a shipment in Europe up to 50g). Jacques used here stamps belonging to the EUROPA series issued between 1958 and 1979. As a reminder, the first EUROPA stamps were issued in 1956 by 6 countries (France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Luxembourg), with common illustrations between 1956 and 1973 (except in 1957) then in 1984, 2000, 2016 and 2023.
It should also be noted that the mention CEPT (European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations) appears on the EUROPA stamps issued between 1960 and 1992 (later replaced by the EUROPA logo).
The stamp on the left (2.50 francs) is part of the series (2 stamps) issued on September 13, 1958 with a common illustration (by André Van der Vossen - Netherlands), symbolising the co-operation of the European postal services as a vehicle of realizing a united Europe.

Le timbre suivant (8 francs) fait partie de la série EUROPA (2 timbres) émise le 6 mai 1978, ayant pour thème les monuments, la cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Anvers ici. Construite de 1352 à 1521, elle fait partie d'un groupe de 56 beffrois et clochers de Belgique et de France inscrits sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en 1999.
Le timbre suivant (3,50 francs) fait partie de la série (2 timbres) émise le 1er mai 1971 avec une illustration commune (par Helgi Haflidasson - Islande) représentant une chaîne croisée avec le mot EUROPA.
Le timbre à 14 francs en haut à gauche fait partie de la série (2 timbres) émise le 7 mai 1977 consacrée au thème des paysages, le monument au roi Albert Ier avec la rivière Yser au premier plan. Il a été érigé en 1938 pour commémorer le rôle du roi lors de la Première Guerre mondiale et notamment de la Bataille de l'Yser, lorsqu'il resta auprès de ses troupes pour défendre le sol national. 
Les 2 derniers timbres en haut à droite (8 et 14 francs) constituent la série EUROPA émise le 28 avril 1979 illustrant le thème de l'histoire des postes (diligence postale et véhicule 4L de la poste belge) et télécommunications (télégraphe Chappe, centre de télécommunication par satellite).

The 14-franc stamp at the top left is part of the series (2 stamps) issued on May 7, 1977 devoted to the theme of landscapes, the King Albert I Memorial with the river Yser in the foreground. It was erected in 1938 to commemorate the role of the king during the First World War and in particular the Battle of the Yser, when he remained with his troops to defend the national soil.
The last two stamps at the top right (8 and 14 francs) constitute the EUROPA series issued on April 28, 1979 illustrating the theme of the history of posts (postal stagecoach and 4L vehicle of the Belgian Post) and telecommunications (Chappe telegraph, satellite communications center).

La 16ème édition des Jeux mondiaux d'été "Special Olympics" pour les athlètes présentant un handicap mental a eu lieu pour la première fois en Allemagne, à Berlin, du 17 au 25 juin 2023, avec la participation de près de 7000 athlètes venant de 190 pays différents, en compétition dans 26 disciplines sportives.
Contrairement aux Jeux olympiques et paralympiques, les Special Olympics ne fournissent pas de tableau des médailles, car il n'y a pas de pression concurrentielle entre les nations, l'important pour tous ces athlètes étant de participer et de se rencontrer dans un contexte sportif.
Le 12 juin 2023 (vente Premier Jour, prévente le 10 juin 2023 à Erpent), la poste belge bpost a mis en circulation un timbre "Invincibles ensemble" (conception : Geert Wille) consacré à ces Jeux mondiaux d'été "Special Olympics" Berlin 2023. 
The 16th edition of the "Special Olympics" World Summer Games for athletes with mental disabilities took place for the first time in Germany, in Berlin, from June 17 to 25, 2023, with the participation of almost 7,000 athletes from 190 different countries, competing in 26 sporting disciplines.
Unlike the Olympics and Paralympics, the Special Olympics does not provide a medal table, because there is no competitive pressure between nations, the important thing for all these athletes is to participate and meet in a sporting context.

Le drapeau belge ainsi que des pictogrammes symbolisant des sports dans lesquels des athlètes belges étaient engagés lors de ces jeux à Berlin (cyclisme, basket-ball, hockey, football, athlétisme, tennis), figurent sur ce timbre.
Le logo de ces jeux est également présent en haut à gauche, réunisant des couleurs gaies et des images emblématiques de Berlin (porte de Brandebourg, tour de télévision, ours), conçu avec l'aide d'athlètes Special Olympics. 
A Berlin, les athlètes belges (88 au total) ont remporté un record de 126 médailles (52 or, 35 argent, 39 bronze) dans 16 disciplines différentes.
Sauf erreur, la Belgique, le Liechtenstein et l'Allemagne sont les 3 seuls pays à avoir émis un timbre consacré à cette compétition Special Olympics Berlin 2023.

The Belgian flag as well as pictograms symbolizing sports in which Belgian athletes were engaged during these games in Berlin (cycling, basketball, hockey, football, athletics, tennis), are featured on this stamp.
The logo of these games is also present at the top left, bringing together cheerful colors and iconic images of Berlin (Brandenburg Gate, TV tower, bear), designed with the help of Special Olympics athletes.
In Berlin, Belgian athletes (88 in total) won a record 126 medals (52 gold, 35 silver, 39 bronze) in 16 different disciplines.
Unless I am mistaken, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Germany are the only three countries to have issued a stamp dedicated to this Special Olympics Berlin 2023 competition.

EUROPA 2023 (Peace - the highest value of humanity) stamp on FDCs from Belgium

Timbre EUROPA 2023 (La Paix - la valeur humaine la plus importante) sur FDCs de Belgique

Sur proposition de la poste ukrainienne, le thème choisi par l'organisation PostEurop pour les timbres EUROPA 2023 est "La Paix - la valeur humaine la plus importante", en écho à l'agression du pays par la Russie débutée en février 2022.
Ce choix sonne comme un rappel de la volonté qui avait présidé en 1950 à la création de l'Union européenne après la 2ème Guerre mondiale, résumée par Robert Schuman en une formule désormais célèbre : faire l'Europe pour faire la Paix.
Pour illustrer ce thème 2023, PostEurop a organisé un concours au sein des pays membres et c'est le projet "Nœud de la paix" de la poste luxembourgeoise (auteurs : Linda Bos et Runa Egilsdottir - A Designers' Collective) qui a été choisi, parmi 29 propositions.
Ce projet représente des cœurs entrelacés, et des mains aux doigts entremêlés, inspirés des nœuds d'amour celtiques. Les différentes couleurs renvoient à tous les pays du monde, unis par ce nouveau symbole de paix, une sorte de société fondée sur la coopération, dans laquelle les individus sont solidaires.
On the proposal of the Ukrainian Post, the theme chosen by the PostEurop organization for the EUROPA 2023 stamps is "Peace - the highest value of humanity", echoing the aggression of the country by Russia which started on February 2022.
This choice sounds like a reminder of the will that presided over the creation of the European Union in 1950 after the Second World War, summed up by Robert Schuman in a now famous formula: make Europe to make Peace.
To illustrate this 2023 theme, PostEurop organized a competition within the member countries and the Luxembourg Post's "Peace Knot" project (authors: Linda Bos and Runa Egilsdottir - A Designers' Collective) was chosen from among 29 proposals.
This project represents intertwined hearts, and hands with intertwined fingers, inspired by Celtic love knots. The different colors refer to all the countries of the world, united by this new symbol of peace, a kind of society based on cooperation, in which individuals stand together.

A noter que la poste belge a participé à ce concours EUROPA organisé par PostEurop (avec un dessin représentant une main faisant le signe de la paix et de la victoire avec un globe terrestre en arrière-plan) mais a choisi de ne pas émettre de 2ème timbre EUROPA le reproduisant... 
Elle a toutefois repris cette main faisant le signe de la paix (dans un style graffiti) dans les marges du bloc-feuillet (conception : Geert Wille, tirage : 18260 feuillets) dans lequel ce timbre EUROPA (tarif "1 Europe" pour un envoi normalisé en Europe jusqu'à 50g - 2,53€ actuellement) figure en 5 exemplaires.

On June 12, 2023 (First Day sale, presale on June 10, 2023 in Erpent), the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation a unique EUROPA stamp, reproducing this common "Peace Knot".
It should be noted that the Belgian Post took part in this EUROPA contest organized by PostEurop (with a drawing representing a hand making the sign of peace and victory with a terrestrial globe in the background) but chose not to issue a 2nd EUROPA stamp reproducing it...
However, it has taken up this hand making the sign of peace (in a graffiti style) in the margins of the sheetlet (design: Geert Wille, print run: 18,260 sheetlets) in which this EUROPA stamp ("1 Europe" rate for a standardized postage in Europe up to 50g - 2.53€ currently) appears in 5 copies.
This stamp was used on the cover above with First Day cancellation from Brussels. Thank you very much Jacques!

A noter que ce TAD est toutefois différent de celui appliqué sur la 1ère enveloppe, les mentions en français et flamand étant inversées (je n'avais jamais remarqué auparavant qu'il existait 2 versions de TADs Premier Jour de Bruxelles...).
Selon le rapport du jury de PostEurop, ce motif "Nœud de la paix" est une métaphore visuelle d'une société pacifique dans laquelle la coopération dans le respect de la culture de chacun est centrale.

To note that this postmark is however different from the one applied on the first envelope, the mentions in French and Flemish being reversed (I had never noticed before that there were two versions of First Day cancellations from Brussels...).
According to the PostEurop jury report, this "Peace Knot" motif is a visual metaphor for a peaceful society in which cooperation with respect for each other's culture is central.

Nous nous demandons rarement ce qui vit dans le sol sous nos pieds. Or, cet univers est peuplé d'animaux, de champignons, de microbes et de plantes divers. Desquels nous sommes d'ailleurs dépendants.
Le 20 mars 2023 (vente Premier Jour à Bruxelles), la poste belge bpost a mis en circulation un intéressant feuillet intitulé "Vie souterraine cachée" composé de 5 timbres consacrés à des petits animaux très répandus dans notre environnement, mais auxquels nous ne prêtons jamais vraiment attention : lithobie à pinces (Lithobius forficatus), ver de terre commun (Lumbricus terrestris), perce-oreille (Forficula auricularia), porcellion rude (Porcellio scaber) et fourmi rouge (Myrmica rubra).
Un de ces 5 timbres au tarif permanent domestique "2" (envoi non normalisé  NON PRIOR entre 0 et 100g, 2,72€ actuellement) figure sur cette lettre avec TAD de Malines (Mechelen), appliqué ici avec une encre verte inhabituelle, où avait lieu la prévente de ce feuillet le 18 mars 2023. We rarely wonder what lives in the ground beneath our feet. However, this universe is populated by various animals, fungi, microbes and plants. On which we are moreover dependent.
On March 20, 2023 (First Day of issue in Brussels), the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation an interesting sheetlet entitled "Hidden underground life" composed of 5 stamps dedicated to small animals, very widespread in our environment, but to which we never lend really watch out: brown centipede (Lithobius forficatus), common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), common earwig (Forficula auricularia), common rough woodlouse (Porcellio scaber) and European fire ant (Myrmica rubra).
One of these 5 stamps at the domestic permanent rate "2" (not standardized NON PRIOR shipment between 0 and 100g, € 2.72 currently) was used on this cover with postmark from Mechelen, applied here with an unusual green ink, where the preview sale of this sheetlet took place on March 18, 2023. Ce feuillet (tirage : 40604) a été conçu par l'illustrateur scientifique Sven Bellanger, avec une forme plissée spéciale. Plié, on voit une coupe transversale de la végétation au sol et de la terre en dessous. Lorsque le feuillet est déplié, les timbres apparaissent.
Le timbre ci-dessus est consacré au ver de terre commun (Lumbricus terrestris), une espèce qui joue un rôle essentiel dans notre écosystème. Le ver de terre commun est en effet apprécié par les jardiniers car il permet à l'air et à l'eau de circuler dans les nombreuses galeries souterraines qu'il creuse, ce procédé étant bénéfique pour le maintien des sols, pour la flore et pour l'écosystème en général. 
Cette espèce, capturée par plusieurs espèces de batraciens et de mammifères de surface (taupe, musaraigne, blaireau, renard), de couleuvres ainsi que d'oiseaux, se nourrit de la matière organique en décomposition et des bactéries du sol. Les excréments rejetés donnent le compost utilisé comme engrais pour le sol.
This sheetlet (print run: 40,604) was designed by scientific illustrator Sven Bellanger, with a special pleated shape. Folded, we see a cross section of the vegetation on the ground and the earth below. When the sheetlet is unfolded, the stamps appear.
The stamp above is dedicated to the common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), a species that plays an essential role in our ecosystem. The common earthworm is indeed appreciated by gardeners because it allows air and water to circulate in the many underground galleries it digs, this process being beneficial for the maintenance of the soil, for the flora and for the ecosystem in general.
This species, captured by several species of batrachians and surface mammals (mole, shrew, badger, fox), grass snakes and birds, feeds on decomposing organic matter and soil bacteria. Discarded excrement yields compost used as soil fertilizer. 

"Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75th Anniversary" stamp on FDC from Belgium

Le 10 décembre 1948, les 58 états membres qui constituaient alors l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies ont adopté la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme à Paris au Palais de Chaillot.
Ce document fondateur - traduit dans plus de 500 langues différentes - continue d'être aujourd'hui une source d'inspiration pour promouvoir l'exercice universel des droits de l'homme à travers le monde.
La Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme (inspirée par la Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen de 1789 en France) a permis de fournir des normes pour divers accords et déclarations internationaux et est reflétée dans les constitutions et les lois de pays du monde entier.
Afin de célébrer le 75ème anniversaire de ce texte fondateur, la poste belge bpost a mis en circulation, le 20 mars 2023 (vente Premier Jour à Bruxelles), un timbre spécial.

On December 10, 1948, the 58 member states that then constituted the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris at the Palais de Chaillot.
This founding document - translated into more than 500 different languages - continues to be a source of inspiration today to promote the universal exercise of human rights worldwide.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (inspired by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789) has provided standards for various international agreements and declarations and is reflected in constitutions and laws of countries around the world.
In order to celebrate the 75th anniversary of this founding text, the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation, on March 20, 2023 (First Day of issue in Brussels), a special stamp.

Le TAD inclut la première phrase de l'article premier de cette Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme : "Tous les êtres humains naissent libres et égaux en dignité et en droits", en flamand, ainsi que la mention de ce 75ème anniversaire en anglais.
Le concepteur de ce timbre, le graphiste Geert Wille, a opté pour une approche conceptuelle afin de souligner le message de tolérance qui constitue l'essence de cette Déclaration.
Le message véhiculé par ce timbre est que vous devez pouvoir être qui vous êtes, ce qui est également une valeur que prône inlassablement la poste belge.
Ce timbre représente un visage androgyne, il est impossible de déterminer s'il s'agit d'un homme ou d'une femme, ce qui était bien entendu le but recherché. Le visage est recouvert de mains ce qui dépeint la façon dont nous nous présentons - ou n'osons pas nous présenter - au monde extérieur.
Ces mains sont toutefois translucides, ce qui constitue un encouragement plein d'espoir à oser montrer qui l'on est.
Je suppose que la signature en bas à droite sur cette enveloppe est celle de Geert Wille.
The cancellation includes the first sentence of article 1 of this Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights", in Flemish, as well as the mention of this 75th anniversary in English.
The designer of this stamp, the graphic artist Geert Wille, opted for a conceptual approach in order to underline the message of tolerance which constitutes the essence of this Declaration.
The message conveyed by this stamp is that you must be able to be who you are, which is also a value that the Belgian Post tirelessly advocates.
This stamp represents an androgynous face, it is impossible to determine if it is a man or a woman, which was of course the desired goal. The face is covered with hands which depicts the way we present ourselves - or dare not present ourselves - to the outside world.
These hands are however translucent, which constitutes a hopeful encouragement to dare to show who we are.
I assume that the signature at the bottom right of this envelope is that of Geert Wille.

Ce timbre (tarif "1" domestique Non Prior - 1,36€ actuellement), imprimé en feuillet de 10 timbres (tirage : 15640 feuillets), figure sur cette lettre avec TAD (appliqué avec une encre bleue !) de Waremme (province de Liège) où avait lieu la prévente de ce timbre le 21 janvier 2023. Since the 1970s, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven (also known by the acronym AMVK) has been active as an interdisciplinary visual artist and graphic designer.
For this postage stamp, she chose the work entitled "Klok" (Clock), a combination of drawing and digital collage echoing the complicated times we live in today.

 

Ce timbre représente une tête figurant une horloge, reliée par des lignes colorées, sur un abîme de noir. Ce fond noir donne l'impression que la tête flotte tel un corps céleste.
Les lignes colorées représentent la connaissance et la science, ainsi que les connexions que nous établissons constamment en tant qu'êtres humains : avec le temps, avec nos routines, avec les liens réciproques entre les pensées.
Le thème de la tête-horloge correspond parfaitement à l'essence du travail d'AMVK : révéler des connexions cachées et nouvelles entre des choses existantes.
Docteure honoris causa de l'Université d'Anvers, AMVK est connue pour son travail toujours très coloré, hiérarchisé, féministe et très critique envers la société.
A noter qu'une autre de ses œuvres, "Construction" représentant une femme nue, avait déjà été reproduite sur un timbre belge en 2000. 

This stamp represents a head figuring a clock, connected by colored lines, on a black abyss. This black background gives the impression that the head is floating like a celestial body.

The colored lines represent knowledge and science, as well as the connections we constantly make as human beings: with time, with our routines, with the reciprocal links between thoughts.

The head-clock theme fits perfectly with the essence of AMVK's work: revealing hidden and new connections between existing things.

Doctor honoris causa from the University of Antwerp, AMVK is known for her work that is always very colourful, hierarchical, feminist and very critical towards society.

To note that another of her works, "Construction" featuring a naked woman, had already been reproduced on a Belgian stamp in 2000.

Philippe married in 1999 Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz, and the couple lives in the castle of Laeken with their 4 children: the crown princess Élisabeth (born in 2001) who will probably become the first Queen of the Belgians, prince Gabriel, prince Emmanuel and princess Eleonore.
On January 23, 2023, the Belgian post bpost put into circulation a stamp dedicated to the 50th birthday of Queen Mathilde.
This stamp ("1" domestic Non Prior rate - currently €1.36), printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps (print run: 21,650 sheetlets), is present on this cover with postmark (Queen's monogram) from Waremme (province of Liège) where the preview sale of this stamp took place on January 21, 2023. La reine Mathilde est née le 20 janvier 1973 à Uccle. Elle a épousé le Prince Philippe, futur roi, le 4 décembre 1999. La reine Mathilde attache une très grande importance à sa famille. Elle assiste le roi des belges dans ses tâches de chef de l'État et est active dans des domaines qui lui tiennent à cœur.
La reine est ainsi présidente d'honneur de Child focus et d'UNICEF Belgique, entre autres. Le Concours musical international Reine Élisabeth est également placé sous le Haut Patronage de la reine Mathilde.
Elle est également une des 14 personnalités dans le monde à promouvoir les objectifs de développement durable de l'ONU.

Unless I am mistaken, Queen Mathilde is represented on this photo in front of part of the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, an architectural construction made of metal and glass located in the park adjoining the Royal Castle of Laeken (Brussels).

Queen Mathilde was born on January 20, 1973 in Uccle. She married Prince Philippe, future king, on December 4, 1999. Queen Mathilde attaches great importance to her family. She assists the King of the Belgians in his duties as Head of State and is active in areas close to her heart.

The queen is thus honorary president of Child focus and UNICEF Belgium, among others. The Queen Elisabeth Music Competition is also placed under the High Patronage of Queen Mathilde.
