"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamps on cover from Bangladesh

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.

On October 9, 2024 (World Post Day), the Bangladesh Post issued a stamp commemorating the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
This stamp (10 BDT) was used twice on the cover above, sent in May 2025 from Chittagong (Agrabad district), the country's largest port and second-largest city. Thank you very much, Tofail!
This stamp was designed using the official 150th anniversary logo created by the UPU (by Sonja Denovski). Bangladesh has been a member of the UPU since February 7, 1973.
Tofail also used another stamp (5 BDT), issued on August 31, 1999, depicting Curzon Hall, built during the British Raj (1858-1947), which now houses the Faculty of Science at the University of Dhaka.
The latest stamp (10 BDT), issued on December 30, 2024, is dedicated to the Festival of Youth, held throughout the country from December 30, 2024, to February 19, 2025.
This Festival of Youth, themed "Creating a New Bangladesh," aims to foster unity and promote an ethic of cooperation (culture, sports, environmental protection...) while supporting and highlighting the contributions of local heroes and changemakers.
Indeed, the youth of Bangladesh spearheaded the July 2024 uprising, transforming the nation and laying the foundations for sustainable progress and development.

"Bangladesh 2023 stamp exhibition" souvenir sheets on cover from Bangladesh

Merci beaucoup Tofail !
Bangladesh Philatelic Federation (BPF) hosted the International Stamp Exhibition "Bangladesh 2023" in Dhaka (Shilpakala Academy) from 29 September to 2 October 2023, as part of the celebrations of the golden jubilee of the country's independence.
This was the first physical international philatelic exhibition held in Dhaka since the independence of Bangladesh with the participation of more than 15 countries from all over the world and supported and sponsored by the Fédération internationale de philatélie (FIP).
On this occasion, Bangladesh Post released four different souvenir sheets, two of which are used on this beautiful cover sent recently from the city of Chittagong (Agrabad district), the country's first port and second city. Thank you very much Tofail!

The poster for this exhibition is reproduced on the souvenir sheet on the left (5 BDT stamp, sale price: 20 BDT), which, unless I am mistaken, depicts a chital (Axis axis), a deer naturally found in the forested regions of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.
The flags of the countries that participated in this exhibition (Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Moldova, Qatar, USA, Fiji, Nepal) are present in the margins of this souvenir sheet.
The other souvenir sheet (5 BDT stamp, sale price: 25 BDT) commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Bangladesh Philatelic Federation (BPF), established in 1998, with the Bangladesh National Philatelic Association (BNPA) as a founding member.
The BPF emblem (also used by the Bangladesh Post and Government) is featured on this stamp, a map of the country on a red background, reminiscent of the flag that was used during the war of independence.

Diplomatic relations with France and Independence Day stamps on cover from Bangladesh

Merci beaucoup Tofail !
Bangladesh was recognized by France as a sovereign state on February 14, 1972. On March 17, 1972, Bangladesh opened its resident diplomatic mission in Paris.
The two countries share a deep friendship, based on common democratic values, the promotion of human rights, the maintenance of peace and sustainable development. This friendship is rooted in historical ties which notably saw André Malraux, former French Minister of Culture, make his memorable appeal to support Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971 and his subsequent meeting with the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1973.
On February 12, 2023, the Bangladesh Post put into circulation a stamp (50 BDT) dedicated to the 50th anniversary of these diplomatic relations with France, used at the top left on this cover sent on October 26, 2023 from the city of Chittagong. Thank you very much Tofail!

This stamp, including only mentions in Bengali, represents the logo of this 50th anniversary in the center as well as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on the right and the National Martyrs' Memorial on the left, the national monument of Bangladesh, erected especially in memory of those who died during the Independence War in 1971.
The top right stamp (10 BDT) was issued on March 26, 2023 to celebrate National Independence Day. This March 26 refers to March 26, 1971 when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh.
A portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975) is featured on this stamp as well as the beginning of his statement on the night of March 26, 1971 before being arrested by the Pakistani army: "This may be my last message, from today Bangladesh is independent". He was released on December 22, 1971 and became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Tofail used another stamp (5 BDT), issued on August 31, 1999, depicting the "Curzon Hall", built during the British Raj era (1858-1947), current headquarters of the Faculty of Science of the University of Dhaka.

"50 years of diplomatic relations with Thailand" s/s on cover from Bangladesh

On October 5, 2022, the Bangladesh Post put into circulation an interesting souvenir sheet (2 stamps at 10 BDT) dedicated to the 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee), to the day, of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Thailand.
This souvenir sheet (selling price: 30 BDT) was used on this pretty cover sent on December 7, 2022 from the 2nd city of the country, Chattogram (Chittagong). Thank you very much Tofail!
The stamp on the left depicts the National Martyrs' Memorial, the national monument of Bangladesh, erected especially in memory of those who died during the Independence War in 1971, the other stamp being dedicated to the Marble Temple (Wat Benchama Bophit), the most recent of the great Buddhist temples in Bangkok, built in 1899 on the initiative of King Rama V.
Emblematic animals of the two countries, the tiger and the elephant, as well as the national birds, the Oriental Magpie-Robin (Copsychus saularis) and the Siamese fireback (Lophura diardi), appear in the upper margin.
The white water lily, the national flower of Bangladesh, and the flowers of Cassia fistula or golden rain tree, whose tree and yellow flower are national symbols in Thailand, are also featured on this souvenir sheet.

Tofail used other stamps, in particular a stamp (10 BDT), issued on August 1, 2021 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Concert for Bangladesh, considered the first charity concert in history, orgnized on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar (featured on the stamp). This concert was organized to help the disaster victims following the passage of cyclone Bhola which caused the death of approximately 400,000 people.
The top left stamp (10 BDT) was issued on June 25, 2022 on the occasion of the inauguration of the Padma Bridge by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This truss road and rail bridge (6.15 km long) was built between 2014 and 2022 on the Padma river mainly fed by the Ganges, in the south-west of Dhaka.
This bridge is considered the most important construction project in the history of Bangladesh.
Another stamp above (10 BDT), issued on June 30, 2022, is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the country's first budget, just after independence. This stamp specifically shows Tajuddin Ahmad (1925-1975) who led the Provisional Government of Bangladesh as Prime Minister during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and is considered one of the most important figures in the country, along with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at his side in the vintage photograph reproduced on the stamp.

"50 years of diplomatic relations" joint s/s with Bangladesh, on FDC from Singapore

Merci beaucoup Terence !
The Republic of Singapore officially established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of Bangladesh in February 1972, a few months after Bangladesh's independence.
2022 thus marks the 50th anniversary (golden jubilee) of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Bangladesh. Over the years, bilateral relations between the two countries have continued to strengthen and prosper significantly, with Singapore being one of the biggest market for the export of manpower from Bangladesh (about 150,000 workers) for instance.
To commemorate this important step, the postal administrations of the two countries put into circulation, on November 15, 2022, a joint series (2 stamps) representing two emblematic songbirds of each country, the Zebra Dove and the Oriental Magpie-Robin.
The Singapore version of this joint series (unknown print run, design: Teo Nam Siang), in souvenir sheet form, is featured on this nice official FDC. Thank you very much Terence!

To note that these two stamps were also printed each in a sheetlet of 10 stamps.
Widely considered the national bird of Bangladesh, the Oriental Magpie-Robin (Copsychus saularis), on the stamp above right ($1.50) is a small black-and-white passerine bird living in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, common in the forest as well as in urban areas. It is a bird particularly known for its song, and once very popular as a pet.
The other stamp ($1.50) depicts a Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata), a species of bird of the dove family, native to Southeast Asia. They are small, slender birds with a long, narrow tail. Their upperparts are brownish-gray with black and white bars while the underparts are pinkish with black bars on the sides of the neck, chest, and belly. These birds are also known in Singapore for their pleasant, soft, staccato cooing calls.
To note that this bird is not the national bird of Singapore (it is the crimson sunbird).
Did you recognize the leaves of the tree on which these 2 birds are perched? a sea almond (Terminalia catappa)?

Tribute to Bangabandhu and Gandhi on cover from Bangladesh

Thank you very much Mourad and Tofail for this nice letter sent by registered mail on February 18, 2021 from the city of Chittagong, franked with stamps dedicated to the "Fathers of the Nation" of India and Bangladesh respectively, Mahatma Gandhi and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nicknamed "Bangabandhu" ("Friend of Bengal") by the population.
The stamp (BDT 10) dedicated to Bangabandhu (1920-1975) was issued on March 17, 2020 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary (day to day) of his birth.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, within the Awami League, led the struggle and the conquest of his country's independence against the Pakistani occupier in the early 1970s. In response to his proclamation of independence of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was imprisoned and a civil war began. The intervention of India allowed the victory of the separatists.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 1971 then declared a state of emergency in December 1974
and amended the constitution, reduced the powers of Parliament and the judiciary and established a one-party system.

A tripartite agreement signed between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to ease tensions led him to grant an amnesty to Bangladeshi collaborators of Pakistani forces. The army reacted and committed a coup d'état on August 15, 1975 by killing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and several members of his family.
One year late, Bangladesh Post commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi (1869-1948) by issuing, on September 29, 2020, a series consisting of 2 round stamps (BDT 10 each) and an imperforated souvenir sheet.
These 2 se-tenant stamps, representing a smiling portrait of Gandhi and showing him with his famous wheel spinning cotton, appear at the top left of this envelope.
Mahatma Gandhi was one of the pioneers of the country's independence movement, advocating disobedience, non-violence and the concept of "swaraj" (self-determination). He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic. Gandhi was the inspiration for many freedom and civil rights movements around the world.
Tofail used another stamp (BDT 5), showing a strong downward shift of the illustration, issued on August 31, 1999, representing the "Curzon Hall", built at the time of the British Raj (1858-1947), current home of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Dhaka.

Tribute to Father of the Nation "Bangabandhu" on cover from Bangladesh

On March 17, 2020, the Bangladesh Post issued a stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary (day to day) of the birth of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975), popularly dubbed with the title of "Bangabandhu" ("Friend of Bengal") by the population and considered as the "Father of the Nation".
A website dedicated to this 100th anniversary has been set up by the government of Bangladesh, headed since 2009 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of "Bangabandhu".
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, within the Awami League, led the struggle and the conquest of his country's independence against the Pakistani occupier in the early 1970s.
In December 1970, the first general elections were held in Pakistan, won by the Awami League, but General Yahya Khan invalidated the results.
In response to his proclamation of independence of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was imprisoned and a civil war against the Pakistani occupation began. The intervention of India allowed the victory of the separatists.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released on December 22, 1971 and became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the Awami League won a landslide victory in the first elections on March 7, 1973. Then he declared a state of emergency in December 1974 and amended the constitution, reduced the powers of Parliament and the judiciary and established a one-party system.
This stamp (BDT 10) is present on the nice First Day cover above, with postmark from the Dhaka GPO. Thank you very much Tofail!
To note that the Bhutan Post also issued a similar stamp this year dedicated to the same 100th anniversary but it is not a priori a joint issue ...
Tofail used two other stamps on this envelope, including one (BDT 5) issued on July 29, 2018 on the occasion of the Stamp Day.
The 3rd stamp (BDT 50) was issued on September 28, 2010 to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China. To note that this stamp was reissued in 2018, with a bridge-shaped overprint on the occasion of the "Praga 2018" philatelic exhibition.

1ère lettre du Bangladesh !

A First Cover from Bangladesh !

Thank you very much Tanvir for allowing me to publish on my blog this first (registered) letter from Bangladesh (posted on November 22, 2010 in Dhaka, the capital) !
A tribute to the "Father of the Nation", Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975) whose portrait appears on the two stamps in the upper left respectively issued on August 15, 1996 and March 17, 1997 (77th anniversary of his birth).
Leader of the Awami League, Mujibur Rahman won the 1970's general elections in East Pakistan and declared independence of the country that will become the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He served as the first president of Bangladesh and also Prime Minister later. Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family, was assassinated in 1975 by army officers...

The poet Jibanananda Das (1899-1954) is featured on the other 4 taka's stamp above, issued on February 17, 2000. Jibanananda Das is considered as the most popular poet of modern Bengali literature.
The last stamp in the top on this letter, issued on November 10, 1991, honors Shaheed Noor Hossain (1961-1987), a young activist of the Awami League, killed by police during a demonstration on November 10, 1987 against the regime of dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad. He is represented on this stamp with the slogan "Down with autocracy, let democracy be established", written on his body.
A small nod to France with the stamp above to the right, part of a set of two stamps issued on June 10, 1998 at the occasion of the FIFA World Cup held in France.
The souvenir sheet (four stamps at 10 takas) above, issued on April 18, 2008, is devoted to the Sundarbans, an immense area of land and water of the Ganges delta, shared between India and Bangladesh. This National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, is the largest area of mangrove forests in the world, inhabited by rare or endangered species including Bengal tigers or salt-water crocodiles.

Tanvir has completed his postage with another souvenir sheet applied on the other side of this letter above.
This sheet, consisting of three stamps and a coupon, issued on April 10, 2009, is devoted to the World Stamp Exhibition "China 2009" held in Luoyang from 10 to 16 April 2009.
The two stamps at 10 takas are depicting the logo and mascot of this Exhibition, both inspired by the peony, the national flower of China and emblem of the city of Luoyang.
The third stamp (20 takas) is dedicated to the Year of the Ox in the Chinese lunar calendar.
