"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamps on prepaid cover from Sri Lanka

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On October 9, 2024, World Post Day, the Sri Lanka Post issued two stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
These two stamps (50 LKR, print run: 300,000) have been used on the left side of the prepaid envelope above, sent in early November 2025 from Ampara, a city in the east of the island. Thank you so much, Sashika!
These two stamps were designed using the official 150th anniversary logo created by the UPU (by Sonja Denovski) and include the associated slogan and World Post Day. Sri Lanka has been a member of the UPU since July 13, 1949.
I do not know precisely the date of issue of this prepaid envelope (50 LKR) dedicated to an oil lamp in the shape of an elephant "Eth Pahana", discovered on the archaeological site of the Dedigama Kotawehera stupa, birthplace of King Parakramabahu I who ruled during the time of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa (1153-1186 AD).

"The Wonder of the Universe" souvenir sheet on cover from Sri Lanka

On September 25, 2025, the Sri Lankan postal administration released a beautiful series (ten LKR 50.00 stamps, print run: 300,000 each) entitled "The Wonder of the Universe", illustrating various spectacular elements and phenomena observed in the vastness of the universe.
These 10 round-shaped stamps have also been printed in a souvenir sheet (print run: 10,000), with two central labels, used on the cover below, sent on October 21, 2025, from Ampara, a city in the east of the island. Thank you so much, Sashika!
The first stamp features the Pillars of Creation, a famous image of interstellar dust columns taken in 1995 by the Hubble Space Telescope. The structure is located approximately 7,000 light-years from Earth in the Eagle Nebula, at the heart of the open cluster M16.
The next stamp depicts a total solar eclipse, while the third stamp shows Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole at the galactic center of the Milky Way, with a mass of approximately 4.3 million solar masses, and an intense radio source located in the direction of the zodiac constellation Sagittarius.
The fourth stamp features the Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, a spiral galaxy located approximately 2.55 million light-years from the Sun in the constellation Andromeda.

The fifth stamp depicts the Crab Nebula, a pulsar wind nebula and supernova remnant in the constellation Taurus, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way. It and its central Crab Pulsar resulted from the explosion of the massive star SN 1054 as a historic supernova, observed around 1055 by Chinese astronomers during the Song Dynasty.
The Orion Nebula (M42), a diffuse nebula that shines in both emission and reflection in the heart of the constellation Orion in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, is illustrated on the following stamp. It is one of the most spectacular nebulae, and the most intense nebula visible from the Northern Hemisphere, observable with binoculars.
The next stamp features the Great Red Spot, a gigantic anticyclone in Jupiter's atmosphere. Approximately 15,000 kilometers long and nearly 12,000 kilometers wide, it is currently slightly larger than Earth. Winds blow at around 700 km/h.
Stephan's Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies located in the constellation Pegasus, discovered by the French astronomer Édouard Stephan at the end of the 19th century, is featured on the 8th stamp.
The Pleiades star cluster (M45), an open cluster of stars (approximately 3,000) visible to the naked eye from both hemispheres, in the constellation Taurus, is depicted on the 9th stamp.
The last stamp shows the rings of Saturn, the most prominent planetary rings in the Solar System, first observed by Galileo in 1610.

"Diplomatic relations with France - 75th anniversary" stamp set on cover from Sri Lanka

Merci beaucoup Gayanth !
On July 28, 2023, Emmanuel Macron made a (very short) historic visit to Sri Lanka, the first by a French president, as Sri Lanka and France celebrated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations (on October 27, 1948 exactly).
On October 27, 2023, the Sri Lankan Post put into circulation a nice series (2 stamps) dedicated to this 75th anniversary, illustrating iconic sites of the two countries, listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, Mont-Saint-Michel and the ancient city of Sigiriya.
These two stamps (50 LKR, print run: 300,000 each) have been also printed in the same souvenir sheet (print run: 25,000).
This complete set (stamps + souvenir sheet) was used on the pretty cover below sent on February 13, 2024 from the town of Piliyandala, located in the south of Colombo, the economic capital of the country. Many thanks Gayanth!

The official logo of this 75th anniversary is present on the 2 stamps as well as in the upper margin of the souvenir sheet (with the flags of the 2 countries in the background).
One of these two stamps is dedicated to the incredible site of the ancient city of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka, with its 180 meters high red stone rock ("Lion's Rock") which dominates the jungle from all sides.
This site (listed by UNESCO in 1982), that was the fortress and capital chosen by the parricidal king Kassyapa at the end of the fifth century, is characterized by an ingenious irrigation system and by frescoes ("Ladies of Sigiriya"), the only female images dating from medieval Ceylon.
The other stamp represents another famous rock, Mont-Saint-Michel in France, a site classified by UNESCO in 1979.
This Benedictine abbey, founded in 966, was built on a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael since 708, on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides.
The construction of the abbey, "Wonder of the West", which continued from the 11th to the 16th century, adapting to a very difficult natural site, was a technical and artistic tour de force.
Mont-Saint-Michel, one of the high places of medieval Christian civilization, is an unequalled ensemble, as much because of the co-existence of the abbey and its fortified village within the confined limits of a small island, as for the originality of the placement of the buildings which accord with its unique silhouette.

"Mangrove and coral reef" joint m/s with Singapore, on Sri Lankan postal stationery

On July 27, 2021, the postal administrations of Singapore and Sri Lanka put into circulation a joint series (2 stamps) on the theme of fragile and to be protected ecosystems from the two countries, mangroves (Singapore) and coral reefs (Sri Lanka).
This issue also commemorated, one year late, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (on December 8, 1970 to be precise).
Since that date, the two countries have maintained close relations, particularly in the economic field, Singapore being one of Sri Lanka's main trade partners and its 5th investor in 2019.
In addition, the two countries signed a free trade agreement in 2018 to further develop these trade relations.

Sri Lanka Post printed these 2 stamps (15 and 45 LKR), designed respectively by Leo Teck Chong (Singapore) and P. Isuru Chathuranga (Sri Lanka), each in a sheet of 20 stamps as well as in a souvenir sheet (selling price: 60 LKR, print run: 30,000) used in addition to postage on this postal stationery sent on January 22, 2024 from Ampara, a town located in the east of the island. Thank you very much Sashika!
Sri Lanka, a tropical island, is home to an abundance of coral reefs rich in biodiversity, with more than 180 different species recorded. They are a valuable resource for coastal communities across the country through inshore fishing, contribute to coastal and marine biodiversity by supporting flora and fauna habitats, and help contain coastal erosion.
I do not know precisely the date of issue of this postal stationery (50 LKR) dedicated to an oil lamp in the shape of an elephant "Eth Pahana", discovered on the archaeological site of the Dedigama Kotawehera stupa, birthplace of King Parakramabahu I who ruled during the time of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa (1153-1186 AD).
Sashika also used 2 identical stamps (20 LKR) as part of a series (12 stamps) issued on December 1, 2022, dedicated to different species of endemic butterflies, Pale Ceylon line blue (Nacaduba sinhala) here.

“Flowers” souvenir sheet on cover from Sri Lanka

On October 7, 2016, the Sri Lanka Post put into circulation a nice series (12 stamps) dedicated to different species of flowers, most of them endemic, also available in two souvenir sheets: 8 stamps for nominal values from 1 LKR to 25 LKR and 4 stamps for nominal values from 30 LKR to 50 LKR.
The 2nd numbered souvenir sheet (print run: 15,000), composed of 4 stamps, was used on this cover sent on November 22, 2023 from Colombo, the economic capital of the country. Thank you very much Ravindra!
Among these 4 flowers, 3 are part of the orchid family such as the Adrorhizon purpurascens orchid (30 LKR), endemic to southern India and Sri Lanka, found in submontane to tropical, humid and evergreen forests, on tree trunks and on rocks along streams at altitudes of 500 to 1900 meters.

The next stamp (35 LKR) is dedicated to an orchid Habenaria acuminata, recorded in India and Sri Lanka, on grassy slopes at altitudes of approximately 915 to 1530 meters.
A Luisia teretifolia orchid (or Luisia tristis), often called "velvet orchid" is pictured on the 3rd stamp (40 LKR), usually growing on rough-barked trees in a well-lit rainforest. Its range extends from southeast Asia to Australia and the Pacific Islands.
The final stamp (50 LKR) depicts a flowering plant called Impatiens henslowiana, belonging to the Balsaminaceae family, native to the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, as well as Sri Lanka. It is a large shrub that grows either in the ground or as an epiphyte.

International Year of Millets and "World Post Day" joint stamps on cover from Sri Lanka

The global food system faces many complex challenges, including hunger, malnutrition, an ever-growing global population, limited natural resources and a changing climate.
A solution is to enhance sustainable crop production, resilient value chains and consumer access to affordable and varied diets. Millets, in their diversity, can contribute to this solution as affordable sources of nutrients for healthy diets that can be cultivated in various adverse climates and arid regions with minimal external inputs.
The International Year of Millets 2023, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly and FAO, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the multiple benefits of millets, from nutrition and health to environmental sustainability and economic development.
Unless I'm mistaken, only a limited number of postal administrations (Sri Lanka, India, Belarus) issued stamps on this theme in 2023.

The Sri Lankan stamp "International Year of Millets" (50 LKR, print run: 300,000), issued on October 9, 2023, was used on the right on this cover sent on November 27, 2023 from Ampara, a town located in the eastern part of the island. Thank you very much Sashika!
The logo of this International Year of Millets appears in the center as well as 7 types of cereals (Eleusine coracana, Paspalum scrobiculatum, Sorghum bicolor, Setaria italica, Panicum sumatrense, Panicum miliaceum, Pennisetum glaucum) belonging to this millet group.
The other two stamps (50 LKR, print run: 300,000) were issued respectively on October 9, 2022 (theme: Post for Planet) and October 9, 2023 (theme: Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future) to celebrate World Post Day.
The 2022 stamp was a joint stamp issued by around 25 postal administrations around the world (Serbia, Belarus, Croatia, Russia, Fiji, Colombia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Thailand...), the 2023 stamp having been issued only by Sri Lanka, Egypt and 8 other African countries (Central African Republic, Djibouti, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Niger, Sierra Leone, Togo).

"Mangrove and coral reef" joint m/s with Sri Lanka, on FDC from Singapore

The Singapore Post printed these two stamps ($ 1.40), designed respectively by Leo Teck Chong (Singapore) and P. Isuru Chathuranga (Sri Lanka), each in sheetlet of 10 stamps as well as in an elegant miniature sheet (sale price: $ 3.00) present on this official FDC. Thank you very much Terence!

Despite its small size and urbanization, Singapore is home to many natural sites made up of wetlands or mangroves (Coney Island, Berlayer Creek, Pulau Ubin, Pasir Ris Park ...).
The mangrove, a marine swamp ecosystem, provides benefits to populations in terms of food security, protection of coasts against wave assault and carbon storage. It also contributes to reducing the risks of natural disasters linked to the impacts of climate change.

Sri Lanka / South Korea joint stamp issue: Court Dances

Sri Lanka and South Korea celebrated in 2017 the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and on this occasion, the state visit of Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena to Seoul from November 28 to 30 2017.
Since November 14, 1977, the two countries have friendly relations in various fields (political, economic) and South Korea, in particular, is transferring its experiences of economic growth and agricultural technologies to Sri Lanka. These relations grew after the end of the civil war that devastated Sri Lanka between 1983 and 2009.
On November 14, 2017, the postal administrations of the two countries put into circulation on this occasion an interesting joint series (2 stamps) devoted to court dances.

The Sri Lankan Post printed these 2 stamps in different forms: each in sheet (print run: 500,000), in the same sheetlet of 10 stamps (5 of each, print run: 10,000 sheetlets) as well as in the same souvenir sheet of 2 stamps (print run: 15,000 souvenir sheets).
This souvenir sheet, with this 40th anniversary's logo in the margin, as well as an isolated stamp (50 LKR) were used on the beautiful letter above, sent on June 10, 2018 from Colombo. Thank you very much Gayanth!
The 1st stamp of this joint series (10 LKR) is dedicated to one of Kandyan dances, a variety of sacred dances traditionally performed in the Kandy region, considered as the religious capital of Sri Lanka. These dances were performed at royal banquets during the period of the Kingdom of Kandy, a former monarchical state occupying the central-eastern part of the island, between 1469 and 1815. These dances are composed of energetic yet subtle movements to the rhythm of the drum beats.
The other stamp (50 LKR) is devoted to Chunaengjeon ("Dance of the Spring Nightingale"), a dance created during the reign of King Sunjo (Joseon period, king between 1800 and 1834) to celebrate the 40th birthday of his wife, Queen Sunwon. A solo dancer, dressed in a colorful costume, performs elegant dancing movements on a floral-patterned straw mat called Hwamunseok.

Russia-Sri Lanka joint stamp issue: Rock Monastery and Temple

On February 19, 1957, USSR and Sri Lanka officially established diplomatic relations, before the signing of an economic cooperation agreement in 1958.
USSR (and then Russia) in particular supported the Sri Lankan government during the civil war between 1983 and 2009, by procuring weapons or vetoing at the UN against resolutions accusing the authorities of war crimes during this same conflict...
In return, Sri Lanka has been on the side of Russia during its military intervention in eastern Ukraine or the annexation of Crimea...
On December 18, 2017, a joint series (2 stamps) between the two countries was put into circulation, devoted to architecture, a cave monastery and a rock temple, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of these diplomatic relations.

The Russian version of this series (2 se-tenant stamps printed in the same sheetlet consisting of 8 stamps) was used to frank the nice letter above, sent on January 9, 2018 from Saint Petersburg. Thank you very much Yuri!
These two stamps (35 rubles, print run: 100,000 each), designed by I. Ulyanovsky, respectively represent the Assumption Cave Monastery, carved out of a cliff in the 15th century near the town of Bakhchisarai (located in the south of the peninsula of Crimea), and the Golden Temple of Dambulla in Sri Lanka, a major pilgrimage place for 22 centuries, a rock site made up of 5 shrines, considered to be the the largest and best-preserved cave-temple complex in the country (Buddhist murals, 157 statues).
The Sri Lankan version of this joint series has not been issued to date, apparently following an embargo by the Russian authorities against imports of Ceylon tea (about 20% of this tea's exports are destined for Russian market).

Relations diplomatiques Sri Lanka-Japon

Sri Lanka-Japan diplomatic relations

On April 28, 1952, Japan and Sri Lanka officially established diplomatic relations following the entry into force of the San Francisco Peace Treaty.
Two years later, joining the Colombo Plan, Japan began its official development assistance program in Sri Lanka, in the form of grants, loans and technical cooperation.
Mutual humanitarian cooperation has also been established following the terrible tsunamis in Sri Lanka in 2004 and Japan in 2011.
Japan also participated in the reconstruction of Sri Lanka after the end of the civil war in 2009, ending nearly 20 years of conflict between the army and Tamil separatists.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of these diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Sri Lankan Post has issued, on January 18, 2013 (with 1 year late...), a nice set of two stamps (design : Kumudu Tharaka, print run : 1,000,000 each).
This series was also issued in the beautiful souvenir sheet used on the cover above, posted on March 24, 2014 in the town of Piliyandala, a suburb of the south of the capital, Colombo. Thank you very much Gayanth :-)

Gayanth also used a third stamp (Rs 5) above to the left, issued on March 3, 2014 on the occasion of the first World Wildlife Day, which aims to celebrate the wild fauna and flora and public awareness of their importance.
That stamp features a frog threatened species (Taruga eques), endemic to Sri Lanka , living in the mountainous central region of the country.

The postal administration of Sri Lanka had the good idea of issuing, on July 23, 2012, a series of four stamps dedicated to the London Olympic Games, depicting the four sports in which the seven country's athletes competed : athletics, swimming, shooting and badminton.
These four stamps (print run : 500,000 each), designed by Pulasthi Ediriweera, have been also issued in the souvenir sheet appearing on the nice cover below mailed on September 6th 2012 from the town of Piliyandala (situated near the capital Colombo). Thank you very much Gayanth :-)

Olympic rings as well as the logo of these London Olympics are included in the left margin and on each stamp (with also the famous Big Ben). To note also the presence of another landmark of the British capital to the left, Tower Bridge.

Early Anuradhapura Era in Sri Lanka

The six stamps that were included on my first letter received from Sri Lanka mentioned the Polonnaruwa Era (from 11th to 13th century AD). This issue from 2009 was then the third part of this interesting series of the Sri Lankan Post dedicated to different historical periods that have marked the island.
The six stamps included on this new cover below, issued on April 30, 2008, constitute the first part of this series, devoted to the protohistoric period and early Anuradhapura era (3rd century BC to the 5th century AD).
Thank you very much Ravindra for this beautiful letter posted on May 24, 2010 (from the town of Nugegoda ?).

These six stamps above evoke chronologically (from right to left) different objects and places from this ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura:
A megalithic cist burial and a necklace discovered in Ibbankatuwa (dating from the 6th to 4th century BC) on the Rs 5.00 stamp.
The water tank of Abhaya Weva (called Basawakkulama today), one of the oldest in the island, built by King Pandukabhaya in the 4th century BC. This tank was then the beginning of the irrigation technique and led to the development of agriculture (Rs 10.00 stamp).
A gold plate with an inscription in ancient Sinhalese meaning "Success ! In the reign of the great King Vasabha, and when the Minister Isigiraya was governing Nagadipa, Piyaguka Tisa Vihara was built at Badakara atana" discovered in 1936 in Vallipuram (Jaffna, 1st century AD) on the Rs 12.00 stamp.
An iron furnace discovered in Alakolaveva, dating from the 2nd century AD (Rs 15.00 stamp).
A punch mark and a coin featuring Goddess Lakshmi (dating from the 3rd and 4th century AD) on the Rs 30.00 stamp.
A detail of the Sigiriya frescoes depicting women carrying flowers, the oldest and best preserved paintings dating from this Anuradhapura era (5th century AD) on the last Rs 40.00 stamp.

Mon 1er courrier du Sri Lanka !

My first cover from Sri Lanka !

Thank you so much Edna for this wonderful surprise posted on January 18, 2010 from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka :-)
I'm very happy to publish this cover because it is therefore my first letter received from this island but also because the theme raised through this beautiful set of six stamps immerses us into the Ancient Sri Lanka between the 11th and 13th century AD, called the Polonnaruwa Era.
The Post of Sri Lanka has started in 2008 a very interesting series devoted to the main historical periods of the country, with the two first parts (proto-historic period/early Anuradhapura Era and Anaradhapura Era).
The six stamps below (issued on June 23, 2009) is therefore the third part of this series devoted this time to the kingdom of Polonnaruwa, which followed for two centuries the Anuradhapura Era (which lasted 14 centuries !), after that King Vijayabahu defeated the Chola, from southern India, who had invaded the north-east of the island.

The main archaeological remains of this Polonnaruwa Era (also the name of the capital of this Kingdom) are mainly due to the two kings Parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186) and Nissankamalla (1187-1196).
Each of the six stamps above suggest a different theme :

  • Language, trade and money (Rs 5.00 stamp) with the Galpotha ("Stone Book"), a huge 25-ton slab on which are engraved texts in Sinhala about the exploits of King Nissankamalla, and a coin with the effigy of Queen Leelawathi, wife of King Parakramabahu, who was the 2nd woman to lead the country, three times between 1197 and 1212.
  • Ethnic and religious unity (Rs 10.00 stamp) with one of the two Hindu Shiva temples, built in granite. During the golden age of the reign of king Parakramabahu, the three sub-kingdoms of the island were indeed unified.
  • Irrigation (Rs 15.00 stamp) with the Parakrama Samudra (literally "Sea of King Parakrama") reservoir, consisting of three separate basins (total area of 22.6 km2) connected by channels. This reservoir, whose construction started in the 4th century, was enlarged during the reign of Parakramabahu, whose imposing statue, carved in the rock, (4 m. high) holding the insignia of sovereignty, is also included on this stamp.
  • Architecture (Rs 25.00 stamp) with the remains of the Vejayanta Prasada Palace of King Parakramabahu and the Audience Hall of King Nissankamalla of which only four rows of pillars and a carved lion exist today...
  • Health Care (Rs 30.00 stamp) with the remains of an ancient hospital, including a stone trough for individual medical baths (called "behet oruwa") and surgical instruments.
  • Hindu sculpture (Rs 40.00 stamp) with different bronze statues (probably dating from the Chola Dynasty ?) featuring Somaskandamurti in particular, a representation of the God Shiva and his consort Parvati (or Uma) sitting on the Kailasa holy Mount and Karaikkal Ammaiyar, a Shaivite devotional Tamil poet ("Nayanar").
It's worth noting that the remains of these two ancient capitals, Anaradhapura and Polonnaruwa, are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1982.
