"900th Anniversary of the Consecration of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice" joint s/s with San Marino, on cover from Italy

Merci beaucoup Salvatore !
On October 8, 1994, the postal administrations of Italy and San Marino released a joint stamp commemorating the 900th anniversary of the consecration of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.
Each country issued this stamp (750 ITL; design: F. Ramberti) separately, accompanied by an attached label noting the theme of the joint series (print run: 300,000 for San Marino, 4,000,000 for Italy).
A souvenir sheet (print run: 1,000,000) was also put into circulation, featuring the stamps from both countries arranged *tête-bêche*; each stamp bore a note on the back stating that it could only be used in its respective country.
Unless I am mistaken, this was the world's first joint souvenir sheet to include stamps from multiple different countries!
This souvenir sheet appears on the cover below, bearing an Italian postmark (Imola) dated April 29, 2026, and a blue, undated special cancellation from the San Marino Post Office's Philatelic and Numismatic Service. Many thanks, Salvatore!

Salvatore sent me this cover inside another envelope, as the postage paid (1,500 ITL) was insufficient for a standard shipment (B Zone 1) to France—which currently costs €1.35 (2,614 ITL)...
I find this souvenir sheet magnificent; each stamp depicts the west façade of St. Mark's Basilica—arguably one of Venice's most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
Built in 828 and reconstructed after the fire that devastated the Doge's Palace in 976, St. Mark's Basilica has served as the cathedral of the Patriarch of Venice since 1807. It is located in St. Mark's Square, in the San Marco district.
St. Mark's is a domed church modeled after Byzantine structures; it features a Greek cross plan measuring 76 meters in length and 63 meters in width. The central dome covers the crossing point of the four arms, each of which is topped by its own dome. The main domes reach a height of 45 meters.
The constant reliance on Byzantine artistic models is due to the Republic of Venice's close ties with Byzantium. The influence of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople (536–546) appears to be the most significant. While 13th-century additions—particularly the magnificent golden mosaics—remained true to the spirit of Byzantine art, the 14th century saw the deliberate introduction of the Gothic style.

"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamp on cover from San Marino

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On October 9, 2024 (World Post Day), the Post of San Marino issued a stamp commemorating the UPU's 150th anniversary ("150° anniversario dell’Unione Postale Universale").
This stamp (€1.30; print run: 20,000; design: Elisa Quadri) was used on the cover above, sent on April 2, 2026, from the city of San Marino. Many thanks, Salvatore!
The stamp depicts a carrier pigeon holding a letter in its beak on the left; a white globe symbolizing the world and the universality of the postal service on the right; and a post horn at the bottom center—all set against a colorful background echoing the colors of the official anniversary logo.
The official logo designed by the UPU (Sonja Denovski) is reproduced in the margin of the sheetlet (containing four stamps)—visible on the left side of this envelope—in which this stamp was printed (by Cartor Security Printing).
The Republic of San Marino has been a member of the UPU since July 1, 1915.

EUROPA 2026 (70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps) stamp on cover from San Marino

The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps, a philatelic initiative launched to strengthen relations between European countries and promote lasting peace and unity.
First issued in 1956 by six nations – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, founding members of the European Union – this program has gradually expanded to include 53 participating postal organizations.
Last year, PostEurop's Stamps and Philately Working Group organized an internal competition to choose a common design on the theme "70th Anniversary of the EUROPA Stamp: United by...".
Guided by shared values such as communication, innovation, cooperation, and common roots, the members submitted 15 creative proposals, each presenting a unique vision.
Following a vote by 50 postal organizations, the Finnish Post (Posti) won the competition, ahead of the Post of Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo) and the Post of Luxembourg.
The design by artist and graphic designer Klaus Welp will therefore be featured on the EUROPA stamps issued in 2026.

On March 3, 2026, the postal administration of the Republic of San Marino issued a single EUROPA stamp reproducing the design by Klaus Welp.
This stamp (€3.30, print run: 20,004), printed (in France by Cartor Security Printing) in a sheet of 12, was used on the cover above, sent on April 2, 2026, from San Marino, the capital. Thank you very much, Salvatore!
This EUROPA stamp combines abstract and symbolic elements. The diagonally ascending dotted line represents both the perforation of a stamp and the progressive work of the PostEurop. The seven dots, connected by a straight line, symbolize seventy years of unified effort by postal operators across the continent.
The blending gradients and dotted patterns in the background form a cohesive and vibrant surface, reflecting the joyful mix of colours from the European flag and symbolizing the unity of all member nations.

It should be noted that San Marino issued its first EUROPA stamp in 1961 (view of Mount Titano), without however reproducing the common design (stylized dove, by Dutchman Theo Kurpershoek) chosen that year...

Merci beaucoup Salvatore !
Blessed Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati were to be canonized on April 27, 2025, in Rome, during the Jubilee for Young People, which took place from April 25 to 27, 2025.
The ceremony was postponed due to the death of Pope Francis, which occurred on April 21, 2025. On June 13, 2025, Pope Leo XIV declared that Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati would be canonized on September 7, 2025, during a ceremony in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.
On the day of this canonization, the postal administrations of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) issued a joint series (2 stamps) dedicated to the canonization of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati.

The two stamps issued by the Vatican City (2 x €1.35, printed by Cartor Security Printing) have been used on the two first day covers below. Thank you very much, Salvatore!

The other stamp in this joint series above (print run: 50,000) reproduces a portrait of Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925), painted by Alberto Falchetti (1878-1951) and which belonged to the Frassati family.
A student, mountaineer, and member of the Dominican Third Order, Pier Giorgio Frassati is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and celebrated on July 4.
His devotion to Saint Dominic was so profound that he took the habit of a Dominican tertiary on May 28, 1922. Born into a wealthy family, he chose to become "the porter of the poor", pulling carts loaded with the belongings of evicted families through the streets of Turin. He gave everything he had to those in need, including clothing, money and medicine.
He visited struggling families in Turin's poorest neighbourhoods, providing them with food and paying their rent. He also found them jobs and medical care, always without his parents knowing. His days were balanced between prayer, service, study and friendship.
An active member of Catholic Action, he died at the age of 24 in 1925, after just four days of illness due to sudden and aggressive poliomyelitis.
Pier Giorgio Frassati was declared venerable in 1987 by Pope John Paul II, before being beatified in 1990 and canonized on September 7, 2025.
Described as the "man of the eight beatitudes" at his beatification, he is declared the patron saint of mountaineers because of his passion for the mountains.

The San Marino version of this series (2 x €1.35, print run: 40,000 each), printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, was used on the two covers below, sent on September 23, 2025, from the capital, San Marino. Thank you very much, Salvatore!

The other stamp in this joint series above reproduces a portrait of Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925), painted by Alberto Falchetti (1878-1951) and which belonged to the Frassati family.

EUROPA 2025 (National Archaeological Discoveries) stamp on cover from San Marino

Merci beaucoup Salvatore !
The theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA 2025 stamps is entitled "National Archaeological Discoveries" ("Scoperte archeologiche nazionali" in Italian), emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting evidence of the past, thus promoting greater awareness among future generations.
On February 11, 2025, the postal administration of the Republic of San Marino issued a single stamp illustrating this theme, which is more related to paleontology than archaeology...
This stamp (€2.45, print run: 24,000, design: Monika Dattner), printed in France by Cartor Security Printing (in a sheetlet of four stamps), was used on the cover below sent on June 16, 2025, from the capital, San Marino. Thank you very much, Salvatore!

This stamp is dedicated to the "San Marino whale" (scientific name: Titanocetus sammarinensis), an extraordinary cetacean dating back to the Miocene period, whose fossil remains were discovered in 1897 (described in 1900 by the Italian paleontologist Giovanni Capellini) in a stone quarry near the summit of Mount Titano.
This exceptional find aroused the interest of the international scientific community. The original finds are kept at the G. Capellini Museum of Palaeontology and Geology in Bologna, while the right hemimandibula, a cast of the skull, ribs and left hemimandibula are on display at the San Marino Natural History Museum.
This whale was similar in appearance to the living rorquals, although it was considerably smaller: the skull barely exceeded one meter in total length, while the entire animal reached around six meters.

On June 15, 2024, the postal administrations of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) put into circulation a joint stamp dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Red Cross, which took place in Milan on June 15, 1864.
This stamp was printed in a sheetlet composed of 4 stamps, with a margin illustrating the torches lit during the annual torchlight procession between Solferino and Castiglione delle Stiviere, the sites of the battle of the same name in 1859 and the subsequent improvised rescue by the population during which Henri Dunant was inspired to create a humanitarian movement that would take the name of "Red Cross".
The stamp was designed from a photograph by Danilo Traverso showing the volunteers of the Italian Red Cross engaged in the rescue of victims during the dramatic collapse of the Ponte Morandi in Genoa on August 14, 2018.

Following this tragic event, the President of the Italian Republic awarded in 2024 the Gold Medal of Civil Merit to the flag of the Italian Red Cross in Liguria.

To note the presence of the official logo of this 160th anniversary of the Italian Red Cross on the stamp as well as the words "Ovunque per chiunque" ("Anywhere and for anyone").
A note in the margin of the sheetlet recalls that today, more than 150,000 volunteers are part of this humanitarian organization, constantly alongside the Italian population and institutions for 160 years.

The second stamp (€0.05) is part of a series (3 stamps, design: Francesco Bongiorni) issued on February 26, 2019, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Alpini National Association (ANA).

"Vespa Club Italia - 75th anniversary" joint stamp with San Marino, on cover from Italy

Salvatore used a 2nd stamp (€0.50, print run: 30,000) part of a series (3 stamps) issued on March 30, 2021, dedicated to sport in an original way.
Designed by Franco Matticchio, these stamps show with irony and humor postmen in the guise of animals engaged in the new Olympic disciplines: a cat delivers an envelope on a skateboard (stamp above), a rabbit with a messenger bag crosses the sea on a surf and a goat climbs on top of a rocky wall to reach a letterbox.

EUROPA 2024 (Underwater Fauna and Flora) stamp set on cover from San Marino

On March 19, 2024, the postal administration of the small Republic of San Marino put into circulation its EUROPA series (2 stamps) illustrating this year the theme of underwater fauna and flora ("Fauna e flora acquatiche" in Italian).
These two stamps, designed by the artist and illustrator Monika Dattner and each printed in sheets of 12 stamps (print run: 20,004 each) by Cartor Security Printing (France), respectively represent an aquatic beetle Scarodytes ruffoi (€1.30) and an Italian great crested newt (€2.70).
Many thanks Salvatore for this lovely cover franked with this EUROPA 2024 stamp set, sent on March 26, 2024 from Dogana, the most populous city in the country, located on the northeast border with Italy.
These EUROPA 2024 stamps aim to celebrate the biodiversity of European waters in support of various ecological agencies to preserve and protect aquatic habitats.

The Italian great crested newt (Triturus carnifex) is a urodele amphibian about fifteen centimeters long, whose males, during the breeding season, are marked by a dorsal crest and a very colorful livery. This species, threatened by the fragmentation of its habitat and water pollution, is endemic to Italy and the Balkan region (it has been introduced into France and Switzerland).
Scarodytes ruffoi is a small aquatic beetle that lives in rivulets and clean streams. Its presence in the territory of San Marino is of significance as it represents the northern limit of this endemic species of the Apennines.
The stamp's background features the Chara vulgaris, a microalga typical of clear, well-oxygenated bodies of water which, due to its size and morphology, resembles a real plant. Common in the territory of San Marino, it is an essential element in aquatic habitats as it provides food and shelter to various species of invertebrates and contributes to the oxygenation of the water.

EUROPA 2023 (Peace - the highest value of humanity) stamp on cover from San Marino

On the proposal of the Ukrainian Post, the theme chosen by the PostEurop organization for the EUROPA 2023 stamps is "Peace - the highest value of humanity" ("Pace - Il valore più alto dell’umanità" in Italian), echoing the aggression of the country by Russia which began more than one year ago.
This choice sounds like a reminder of the will that presided over the creation of the European Union in 1950 after the Second World War, summed up by Robert Schuman in a now famous formula: make Europe to make Peace.
To illustrate this 2023 theme, PostEurop organized a competition within the member countries and the Luxembourg Post's "Peace Knot" project (authors: Linda Bos and Runa Egilsdottir - A Designers' Collective) was chosen from among 29 proposals.
This project represents intertwined hearts, and hands with intertwined fingers, inspired by Celtic love knots. The different colors refer to all the countries of the world, united by this new symbol of peace, a kind of society based on cooperation, in which individuals stand together.

On May 9, 2023 (the Europe Day), the postal administration of the Republic of San Marino put into circulation a unique EUROPA stamp, reproducing this common "Peace Knot".
This stamp (€3.05, print run: 20,004), printed in France by Cartor Security Printing in a sheet of 12 stamps, was used on this cover sent on May 10, 2023 from Dogana, the most populous city in the country, located on the northeast border with Italy. Thank you very much Salvatore!
According to the PostEurop jury report, this "Peace Knot" motif is a visual metaphor for a peaceful society in which cooperation with respect for each other's culture is central.
