"Gandhi - Mandela" joint stamp set with South Africa on cover from India

On July 26, 2018, the postal administrations of South Africa and India released a joint souvenir sheet (two stamps) dedicated to two anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth and the 125th anniversary of the Pietermaritzburg railway station incident involving the young Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948).
The Indian version of this joint set, taken from a large souvenir sheet (print run: 120,000), almost four times larger than the South African souvenir sheet, was used on the cover below sent on April 24, 2025, from the city of Margao (state of Goa). Thank you very much, Elton!
To note that these two stamps (design: Thea Clemons/Alan Ainslie and Nenu Gupta) were also printed separately (print run: 500,000 each).
The two stamps (25 INR and 5 INR) in this souvenir sheet (Pietermaritzburg railway station in the background) feature portraits of Gandhi and Mandela.

Between 1893 and 1915, the young lawyer Gandhi stayed in South Africa where he became aware of actions for human dignity and social justice, a method of non-violent civil disobedience, by organizing the struggle of the Indian community for their civil rights.
This incident at Pietermaritzburg railway station (the capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal) took place in 1893 when Gandhi was making a journey between Durban and Pretoria.
Gandhi was indeed expelled from a train in which he was traveling because he was not white and was traveling in first class.
By directly witnessing intolerance, racism, prejudice and injustice against the Indians of South Africa, Gandhi began to think about the status of his people and their own place in society.
Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was one of the historic leaders in the fight against the institutional political system of racial segregation (apartheid) before becoming President of the Republic of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, following the first non-segregated national elections in the country's history. Mandela visited India in 1990 just days after his release, where he received the Bharat Ratna, India's most prestigious civilian decoration. In 1997, he signed a strategic partnership between the two countries during an official visit to India.
The two countries now maintain close diplomatic and economic relations, particularly within the BRICS group. Approximately 3% of the South African population is of Indian origin (first wave of immigration in 1860).

"Big five" stamp on "End gender-based violence" postcard from South Africa

Thank you very much Terence for this interesting postcard, sent on December 5, 2019 from Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa!
The South African Post, like several other postal administrations in southern Africa, regularly issues stamps devoted to local fauna and in particular to the Big Five, a set of 5 mammals put forward by tourist authorities, the African lion, the African leopard, the African elephant, the black rhinoceros and the African buffalo.
With the exception of the buffalo, these animal species have been very threatened since the 20th century ...
The stamp below ("Airmail Postcard" rate - 9.95 rand currently) is part of a series (booklet of 2 x 5 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet of 5 stamps) issued on May 9, 2014, devoted to this Big Five.

This self-adhesive stamp (perforations on 3 sides only), extracted from the booklet, is featuring a lion (Panthera leo), a species formerly present in all of South Africa, today mainly confined (about 3,000 individuals living in the wild) in protected areas like the Kruger National Park, located in the northeast of the country.
The stamps in this booklet reproduce illustrations designed by Marius Trollip, winner of a competition organized by the South African Post in 2013.
The 2nd prize in this competition, Annetjie Esterhuizen, created the illustrations reproduced on the souvenir sheet.

This postcard was specially edited by the South African Post to support a government #EndGBV national campaign against gender-based violence.
Organized for 16 days, from November 25 to December 10, 2019, this campaign was supported by the President of the Republic Cyril Ramaphosa who himself denounced this bane, a "great shame for the country", often finding root in "sexist and patriarchal attitudes".
The president described his country as "one of the most dangerous places in the world for a woman" ...
A woman is murdered every 3 hours in South Africa and the police is recording nearly 110 complaints of rape every day.

"First heart transplant 50th Anniversary" stamp on cover from South Africa

On December 3, 1967, South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001) became a world celebrity after having performed the first orthotopic human-to-human heart transplant (the patient was called Louis Washkansky, 55 years old and suffering diabetes and heart failure).
The patient survived for 18 days before succumbing to massive pneumonia induced by his immune treatment.
Between 1967 and 1973, Christiaan Barnard performed 10 orthotopic transplants and, with his team, 48 heterotopic transplants (between 1975 and 1983).
The South African Post had celebrated this medical feat with a series of 2 stamps issued on July 7, 1969, many other postal administrations around the world having done the same in the past 50 years.

Merci beaucoup Terence !
The first heart transplant in France (and in Europe) took place on April 27, 1968 (by the team of Professor Christian Cabrol), a French stamp being issued in 2008 to recall this feat.
On December 1, 2017, the South African Post issued a self-adhesive stamp (tariff "B4" for a domestic item, large envelope - currently 11.15 rand, covering the sending of a standard letter to France - 10.70 rand) devoted to the 50th anniversary of this first heart transplant, which took place in the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
This stamp (print run: 100,000, design: Thea Clemons) was used on the cover above sent on December 22, 2019 from the postal office located in the Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the largest in the country, bearing the name (since 2006) of a former anti-apartheid activist and president of the ANC. Thank you very much Terence!

"Gandhi - Mandela" joint souvenir sheet with India on cover from South Africa

On July 26, 2018, the postal administrations of South Africa and India put into circulation a joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps) dedicated to two anniversaries: the 100 years of the birth of Nelson Mandela and the 125 years of the Pietermaritzburg station incident then involving young Mahatma Gandhi.
The South African version of this souvenir sheet (Permanent rate "Standard Postage" stamps) was used on this letter sent on December 10, 2019 from Cape Town, the country's legislative capital. Thank you very much Terence!
To note these surprising postmarks with mention "Paquebot" meaning that this letter was normally posted on board a ship not having an official post office. In international waters, mails have to be franked with stamps issued by the vessel's flag. These mails are then delivered to any post office located in a port without tariff surcharge ...

Pygmy right whale and humpback whale on prepaid postcard from South Africa

On October 23, 1998, the South African Post had put into circulation a nice series (4 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) devoted to different species of endangered whales of the Southern Ocean.
The 4 stamps in this series (permanent rate "Airmail Postcard" - 9.20 rand currently) include the famous WWF "panda" logo.
One of these 4 stamps is pre-printed on this pretty postcard sent on December 9, 2019 from the city of Cape Town, the legislative capital of the country. Thank you very much Terence!
This card was sent more precisely from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront post office, located in the historic center of the port of this city of Cape Town, between Robben Island and Table Mountain, between sea and mountains ...

This site is the most visited tourist place in South Africa but also the place where the "South African National Antarctic Program" (SANAP) has its headquarters.
I suppose that explains the application of this special cachet above on the left, with "Antarctica Waterfront" mention and presence of an emperor penguin it seems ...
I do not know exactly what the mention "97/07" on this cachet refers to?
The pre-printed stamp above shows a pygmy right whale (Caperea marginata), the smallest of the baleen whales and a rare species that has almost never been observed at sea.

The other side of this postcard above shows a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) tail from an illustration by Chenette Swart and Shalette Kesting.
This whale (weighing around 50 tonnes), which can reach 13 to 14 meters in length, can perform spectacular jumps out of the water.
Its pectoral fins are large unlike those of other cetaceans and this species is known for its very elaborate song.

Germany-South Africa joint stamp "Nelson Mandela" on cover from Germany

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of "Madiba", Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), probably the most prominent political figure of the last century in the world, freedom fighter, reconciler and model for several generations of South Africans.
Nelson Mandela, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1993 for jointly and peacefully ending the apartheid regime and laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa, committed himself from an early age to the equality of rights of the majority of the black population of his country.
Despite 27 years of imprisonment, he continued to fight for a non-racist, united and democratic South Africa.
In 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected the first black president of South Africa.

On the occasion of this 100th anniversary, the postal administrations of Germany and South Africa put into circulation, on July 12, 2018, a joint stamp which is devoted to him.
That stamp (€ 0.70 corresponding to a domestic shipment up to 20g) was used in 2 copies to frank the nice letter above sent the first day of issue from the city of Gütersloh (North Rhine-Westphalia). Thank you very much Jens!
I really like that stamp (design: Annette Le Fort and André Heers), different from the South African stamp (issued in a souvenir sheet), with this benevolent portrait of Mandela and this mention on the left printed with the colors of the South-African flag.
It should be noted that several African countries (Algeria, Togo, Tunisia, Niger, Liberia, Gambia) have also issued this year a souvenir sheet to pay tribute to this leading figure.
Ireland, Monaco, India or the United Nations (Geneva office) also issued stamps devoted to Mandela this year.

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 3ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part III

One more !
John thank you very much for this cover, mailed on 23th of March 2009 from Capemail (Cape region), franked with the South African souvenir sheet issued as part of the "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" international campaign :-)
The Post of South Africa has chosen, like France, to include this campaign's logo (a stylized ice crystal) only in the margin of this sheet, in its lower right part.
I don't know precisely the date of issue of this 2009 sheet ?
South Africa is one of the few countries to have mentioned on its sheet that this campaign is part of the 4th International Polar Year, between 2007 and 2009.

No penguin and no polar bear on the two stamps above !
The South African Post has chosen to depict Sooty Albatross (Phoebetria palpebrata) on the "Standard Postage" stamp.
This ash gray Albatross is the most observed Albatross species between the Antarctic coastline and southern island groups such as South Georgia or Kerguelen islands (French Southern and Antarctic Lands).
A "Dipulmaris antarctica" Jelly Fish whose umbrella can measure up to 18 cm, is depicted on the "International Small Letter" stamp.
An Arctic Tern and a group of Emperor Penguins are also included in the margins of this sheet.
South Africa has several scientific bases in Antarctica, as part of its SANAE (South Africa National Antarctic Expeditions) program, located on the Queen Maud Land, claimed by Norway.

Coupe du monde de football 2010

2010 FIFA World Cup in SA

Merci beaucoup :-)
On May 15 2004, FIFA chose for the first time an African country, South Africa, to organize the 19th FIFA World Cup in 2010 (from June 11 to July 11 in 9 cities) !
200 countries are currently disputing the playoffs on the five continents hoped to be part of the 32 qualifying countries...
Allez les Bleus !!

After the issue of a souvenir sheet in 2006 and 2007, the South Africa post issued a new one in 2008 devoted to this World Cup. If somebody knows the exact issue date ?
This 2008 sheet appears on the cover below sent on October 17 2008 by John. Thank you very much :-)

Two different cancellations have been affixed on this souvenir sheet : one with the words "Cape Town International" and the other with "Branch Manager Bellville 7535".
Bellville is a town of the Western Cape Province in northern Cape Town metropolitan aera, the legislative capital of the country.
The sheet above depicts three supporters in the yellow and green colours of the Bafana Bafana, the national football team. They also proudly display the national flag !
In the last FIFA ranking, South Africa is 85th, it won't be easy in 2010 !
Most stamps issued in recent years in South Africa have no nominal value but details about the type of letter (postcard, B4 for sending domestic large envelopes, B5 for medium envelopes, standard, airmail...) and destination (International...).
This is the case with the stamp above with the words "Small letter - Airmail Southern Africa"... So I'm pleased to learn that France is now located in Southern Africa !
Strange, huh ?

Rapaces d'Afrique du Sud

South African raptors

As agreed in my previous message, I end this mini retail inspection of the flora and the fauna of South Africa with this 3rd envelope dedicated this time to 5 species of birds of prey of the country.
This 5 values of standard postage was emitted on August 16th, 1998.

with from left to right :
  • The Cape vulture, an endemic species of South Africa, Lesotho and Botswana, is considered as vulnerable. There would be at present only 8000 birds.
  • The Bateleur, a medium-sized eagle, is doubtless at the origin of "the bird Zimbabwe", national emblem of Zimbabwe (we find it on all the stamps). Common bird in all sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The Spotted Eagle-Owl, a small species of horned owl, also lives in the South of Sahara. Bird threatened by pesticides used in the agriculture.
  • The white-headed vulture (scale of + of 2 m), lives in opened savannas by the South of Africa. Species considered also as vulnerable by the association BirdLife.
  • The African Fish Eagle, lives near streams in the South of Sahara and in Madagascar. This bird feeds only on fishes.

Faune et Flore d'Afrique du Sud

Fauna and Flora of South Africa

I acquired recently these attractive envelopes of South Africa having for subject the main wealth of the country: its fauna and its flora.

The first one is dedicated to native trees, puts into series of 4 stamps emitted on September 4th, 1998. Every stamp resumes the tree in all its height as well as shape of its leaves, fruits and/or flowers :

Subjects of the stamps, in the direction of the needles of a watch while leaving in top on the left:
  • the tree of the shepherd (7 m) pushes in the driest zones of the country. Also called the tree of life because it allows the men and animals to survive thanks to its fruits, its roots and its sheets.
  • the Karee (7m top ad broad) allows, in the arid regions of Kalahari and Karoo, to find a little shade…
  • the acacia spine of umbrella, recognizable with its twisted pods and its long spines. Curiously, this “indigenous” tree can also be found in Sudan, Djibouti or the Middle East…
  • the baobab tree, or bottle tree (20 to 24 m), venerated in all Africa. The Oldest and most famous lives in Shiramba along the Zambeze river, it would be 2000 years old…
The second envelope is dedicated to antelopes, puts into series emitted on May 18th, 1998 :

Subjects of the stamps, from left to right:
  • the impala lives mainly in the east of central Africa and the south (Angola, RD Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and of course South Africa). The males and females have a different morphology : one easily distinguishes the male thanks to his horns in "S" form measuring itself from 40 to 90 cm.
  • the waterbuck antelope (or sing-sing) lives in all the south of Africa and Yemen. In spite of its name, this animal does not live in water but takes refuge there to escape its predatory.
  • the black gnou lives in the plains, the bush and the dry wooded areas of the south and the east of Africa. One can find herds of more than 1 million of animals in Serengeti.
  • the eland, largest of the antelopes of Africa, lives in savanna in herd from 30 to 40 individuals. Studies are in hand to make a success of its domestication.
  • the kudu, famous for its twisted horns which one makes a musical instrument (shofar) used during the Jewish religious ceremonies. Driven out by the man for his flesh but also by wild dogs, hyenas or eagles.
I shall speak about a 3rd envelope dedicated to the birds of prey of the country in one of my next messages...
