"Pontifical Institute for Christian Archaeology - 100 years" joint stamp with Vatican, on cover from Luxembourg

On December 11, 1925, the Pontifical Institute for Christian Archaeology (PIAC) was founded in Rome at the request of Pope Pius XI, as stated in the Motu Proprio "I primitivi cemeteri".
From the very beginning, the PIAC was intended to work closely with two other research institutions: the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia (responsible for traditional archaeology) and the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra (responsible for managing the catacombs of Rome).
Since 1927, the head office of the PIAC has been located in Via Napoleone III in the centre of Rome.
The PIAC has close ties to Luxembourg: it was the Luxembourgish priest and scientist Johann Peter Kirsch (1861-1941) who was tasked with founding the Institute in 1925.
On November 25, 2025, the postal administrations of Luxembourg and Vatican City issued a joint stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of this Pontifical Institute for Christian Archaeology.

The Luxembourg version of this stamp (€1.70, print run: 30,000), designed by Florence Weiser, was used on the cover above, sent on December 1, 2025, from Esch-sur-Alzette. Thank you very much, Dimitri!
This stamp features a portrait of Johann Peter Kirsch, with the emblem of the Institute behind him - featuring the image of Christ as the "Good Shepherd" in early Christian iconography - and the historic headquarters in Rome.
Johann Peter Kirsch moved to Rome in 1884 as a young priest to study. There he swiftly earned an exceptional reputation and created an international network in both ecclesiastical and academic circles. In 1890, he became professor of patristics and Christian archaeology at the newly founded University of Fribourg in Switzerland. This experience was invaluable to the later founding of the PIAC.
Today, the PIAC is still a teaching and research institution which educates numerous undergraduate and PhD students every year in various branches of Christian archaeology. This is not solely about teaching, as the institute is also involved in international excavations and plays a key role in organising them.

"Canonizations of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati" joint stamps with San Marino, Italy and SMOM, on FDCs from Vatican

Merci beaucoup Salvatore !
Blessed Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati were to be canonized on April 27, 2025, in Rome, during the Jubilee for Young People, which took place from April 25 to 27, 2025.
The ceremony was postponed due to the death of Pope Francis, which occurred on April 21, 2025. On June 13, 2025, Pope Leo XIV declared that Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati would be canonized on September 7, 2025, during a ceremony in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.
On the day of this canonization, the postal administrations of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) issued a joint series (2 stamps) dedicated to the canonization of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati.

The two stamps issued by the Vatican City (2 x €1.35, printed by Cartor Security Printing) have been used on the two first day covers below. Thank you very much, Salvatore!

The other stamp in this joint series above (print run: 50,000) reproduces a portrait of Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925), painted by Alberto Falchetti (1878-1951) and which belonged to the Frassati family.
A student, mountaineer, and member of the Dominican Third Order, Pier Giorgio Frassati is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and celebrated on July 4.
His devotion to Saint Dominic was so profound that he took the habit of a Dominican tertiary on May 28, 1922. Born into a wealthy family, he chose to become "the porter of the poor", pulling carts loaded with the belongings of evicted families through the streets of Turin. He gave everything he had to those in need, including clothing, money and medicine.
He visited struggling families in Turin's poorest neighbourhoods, providing them with food and paying their rent. He also found them jobs and medical care, always without his parents knowing. His days were balanced between prayer, service, study and friendship.
An active member of Catholic Action, he died at the age of 24 in 1925, after just four days of illness due to sudden and aggressive poliomyelitis.
Pier Giorgio Frassati was declared venerable in 1987 by Pope John Paul II, before being beatified in 1990 and canonized on September 7, 2025.
Described as the "man of the eight beatitudes" at his beatification, he is declared the patron saint of mountaineers because of his passion for the mountains.

"EUROPA 2025 (National Archaeological Discoveries)" stamp set on FDC from Vatican

As a reminder, the theme chosen by PostEurop for the EUROPA 2025 stamps is entitled "National Archaeological Discoveries" ("Scoperte archeologiche nazionali" in Italian), highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting the legacy of the past, thereby fostering greater awareness among future generations.
The Vatican Postal Administration issued three stamps on May 27, 2025, printed (by Cartor) each in sheetlets of 10 stamps, which have been used on the cover below with First Day cancellation. Thank you very much, Salvatore!
To illustrate this theme, the Vatican Post drew inspiration from the necropolis located beneath St. Peter's Basilica and the one along the Via Triumphalis, an exceptional archaeological site that perfectly exemplifies an ancient Roman necropolis.
This EUROPA 2025 set indeed presents details of objects unearthed in the Vatican during the 1941 excavations, at the level of the old Constantinian basilica and, more recently, in the necropolis of the Via Triumphalis.

Among these objects is the so-called Sarcophagus of Jonah (4th century, Pio Cristiano Museum), whose sides are adorned with sculptures of the apostles Paul and Peter, reproduced respectively on the €0.10 (print run: 82,000) and €0.15 (print run: 72,000) stamps.
This sarcophagus was located in the ancient St. Peter's Basilica, a Constantinian basilica built in the early 4th century on Vatican Hill, on the traditional site of the tomb of St. Peter. It served as the principal patriarchal basilica and a center of pilgrimage for Western Christianity for over twelve centuries.
The edicule of Tiberius Natronius Venustus, reproduced on the €1.30 stamp (print run: 37,000), comes from the necropolis of the Via Triumphalis (which connected Rome to Veii). It bears the name of the child buried there (who died at the age of four), whose magnificent marble portrait has been remarkably well preserved.
On either side of this Via Triumphalis, which flanked Vatican Hill, the tombs extended across the hillside in several terraces. The landscape featured a wide variety of burial sites, both collective and individual, as well as alleyways and open spaces, often used for ceremonies related to the cult of the dead. This archaeological site is unique due to the excellent state of preservation of the artifacts and is of great interest for understanding pagan funerary practices.

"Italian Red Cross 160th anniversary" joint stamp with Italy, Vatican and SMOM, on cover from San Marino

On June 15, 2024, the postal administrations of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) put into circulation a joint stamp dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Red Cross, which took place in Milan on June 15, 1864.
This stamp was printed in a sheetlet composed of 4 stamps, with a margin illustrating the torches lit during the annual torchlight procession between Solferino and Castiglione delle Stiviere, the sites of the battle of the same name in 1859 and the subsequent improvised rescue by the population during which Henri Dunant was inspired to create a humanitarian movement that would take the name of "Red Cross".
The stamp was designed from a photograph by Danilo Traverso showing the volunteers of the Italian Red Cross engaged in the rescue of victims during the dramatic collapse of the Ponte Morandi in Genoa on August 14, 2018.

Following this tragic event, the President of the Italian Republic awarded in 2024 the Gold Medal of Civil Merit to the flag of the Italian Red Cross in Liguria.
The San Marino version of this stamp (€1.25, print run: 160,000), printed in France by Cartor, was used on the above cover sent on March 27, 2025, from the capital, San Marino. Thank you very much, Salvatore!
To note the presence of the official logo of this 160th anniversary of the Italian Red Cross on the stamp as well as the words "Ovunque per chiunque" ("Anywhere and for anyone").
A note in the margin of the sheetlet recalls that today, more than 150,000 volunteers are part of this humanitarian organization, constantly alongside the Italian population and institutions for 160 years.

The second stamp (€0.05) is part of a series (3 stamps, design: Francesco Bongiorni) issued on February 26, 2019, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Alpini National Association (ANA).
Founded in 1919 in Milan, this association is composed of members of the Italian army specialized in combat in mountainous areas. These soldiers distinguished themselves particularly during the First World War, at the Battle of Mount Ortigara in 1917, against the Austro-Hungarian troops.

"Nicolaus Copernicus - 550th birth anniversary" joint m/s with Vatican, on cover from Poland

Like the Serbian Republic of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria or Czech Republic, Poland and the Vatican City put into circulation, on February 27, 2023, a joint miniature sheet dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the birth of the Polish astronomer, canon, doctor and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543).
After studying arts at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, he discovered medicine, mathematics and especially astronomy at the University of Bologna, Italy, observing eclipses or occultations of stars by the Moon. Back in Poland from the year 1500, Copernic will devote the rest of his life to carrying out his work as a canon and his astronomical research which he conducts in his observatory at Frombork.
While since Ptolemy and Aristotle, the Earth has been placed at the center of the Universe (geocentrism), Copernicus plans to put the Sun at the center of everything (heliocentrism), a hypothesis that had already been considered by Aristarque of Samos, a Greek astronomer who lived 300 years BC.

Copernicus also announces that the Earth rotates on itself, that the Moon is its satellite and that all the planets revolve around the Sun. He develops his theories in two major works: "Commentariolus" and "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" completed around 1530.

Copernicus deliberately delayed the publication of his ideas, fearing the hostile reaction of the Church which refused to consider the mobility of the Earth around the Sun and would not accept this idea until the beginning of the 19th century.
When Copernicus died in 1543, his ideas were only known to a few scientists. During the 16th century they circulated in secret and seduced great minds such as Galileo, Leonardo da Vinci or Johannes Kepler.

The Polish version of this joint miniature sheet (PLN 8, print run: 120,000, design: Joanna Fleszar-Haspert) was used on the above cover sent on October 17, 2024, from the city of Piekary Śląskie. Thank you very much, Bartek!
This miniature sheet was designed from the work of art entitled "Astronomer Copernicus or Conversations with God", a work by Jan Matejko (1838-1893), considered the greatest Polish historical painter, painted around 1873 on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus.
This painting is part of the collections of the Jagiellonian University Museum in Krakow.

The illustrated postmark commemorates the 100th anniversary of the "King Jan III Sobieski" Secondary School in Piekary Śląskie. In 1683, the king stopped in this city on his way to liberate Vienna from the Ottomans.
As part of these celebrations, a postal operation was organized as part of a Nordic walk, with the application of a special cachet "Dostarczono Pocztą Nordic Walking" ("Delivered by Nordic Walking Post"), like the one in the top left corner of this cover.
The second stamp above (PLN 3.90) is part of a sheetlet (6 stamps, print run: 540,000, design: Paweł Myszka) issued on April 28, 2023, from a series entitled "Beauties of Poland" (begun in 2022), devoted in particular to the Lublin region, and to the city of Szczebrzeszyn, with its restored old synagogue.

"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamp on cover from Vatican City

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On September 16, 2024, the Vatican Post issued a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
This stamp (€1.30, print run: 81,000), designed by Patrizio Daniele and printed (by Printex, Malta) in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, was used on the above cover sent on November 9, 2024, from the Vatican City.
This stamp, depicting a postman carrying out his duties, with a globe behind him around which letters are traveling, does not reproduce the official logo designed by the UPU (Sonja Denovski) for this 150th anniversary...
Vatican City has been a member of the UPU since June 1, 1929.

Following this tragic event, the President of the Italian Republic awarded in 2024 the Gold Medal for Civil Merit to the flag of the Italian Red Cross in Liguria.
Two copies of the stamp (€1.25, print run: 140,000) issued by the Order of Malta, with the margin of the sheetlet on the left, printed in France by Cartor, have been used on the cover above with postmarks of November 7, 2024 (with, as usual, the mention "Poste Magistrali").
To note the presence of the official logo of this 160th anniversary of the Italian Red Cross on the stamp and the margin as well as the mention "Ovunque per chiunque" ("Anywhere and for anyone").
The mention in the margin of the sheetlet recalls that today, more than 150,000 volunteers are part of this humanitarian organization, constantly alongside the Italian population and institutions for 160 years

"25 years of the Venice Foundation for Research on Peace" joint stamp with Vatican, on FDC from Italy

The Venice Foundation for Research on Peace is a research center, created in 1999, dedicated to the study of the elements that, from the socio-political context, favor peace processes as well as the defense and promotion of the rights of the individual and peoples.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the creation of this Foundation ("Fondazione Venezia per la Ricerca sulla Pace" in Italian), the postal administrations of Italy and Vatican City put into circulation, on November 14, 2024, a joint stamp.
The Italian version of this stamp ("B" 20g domestic rate - €1.25, print run: 250,000), printed in a sheet of 50 stamps, was used in two copies on the cover below with First Day cancellation from Rome reproducing the logo of this Foundation.

This logo, also present on the stamp, represents the profile of a dove and at the same time recalls the shape of the prow of the Venetian gondola with the so-called "iron prow", composed of seven teeth that symbolize the Doge's hat and the districts into which the city of Venice is divided.
In the background, the stamp reproduces an ancient map, "Pianta prospettica della città di Venezia e delle lagune", that appeared in a 1534 book by Benedetto Bordone entitled "Isolario", currently stored in the Biblioteca del Museo Correr in Venice.
The Church's recognition of the priority of research on peace is evident in her efforts to promote dialogue and the formation of consciences, and in Pope Francis' continuous appeals for an end to the wars that are devastating the World.

"Marconi - 150th birth anniversary" joint stamp with Vatican, on SMOM cover

On May 21, 2024, the postal administration of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) put into circulation a joint stamp with the Vatican City, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937).
An Italian physicist, inventor and businessman, Marconi, also a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Malta, is considered one of the inventors of radio and wireless telegraphy, Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909.
This joint stamp (€1.30, print run: 15,000, design: O. Rossi), printed (in France by Cartor) in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, was used on the cover below with postmarks of November 7, 2024 (with, as usual, the mention "Poste Magistrali").
Unless I am mistaken, this stamp was designed from a photograph of Marconi dating from 1922, taken aboard his steam yacht Elettra. Acquired in 1919, this yacht served as his maritime laboratory from which he conducted his many experiments with wireless telegraphy and telephony and other communication and direction-finding techniques during the inter-war period.

On May 21, 2024, the SMOM post also put into circulation the 2nd stamp above on the right, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Monegasque Association of the Order of Malta.
This stamp (€3.15, print run: 5,000), printed (in France by Cartor) in a sheetlet of 9 stamps, shows a panoramic view of the Rock (showing the Prince's Palace and the Oceanographic Museum), the fortress of the Principality of Monaco, where the Monegasque Association of the Order of Malta has its headquarters.
The flags of Monaco and the Order of Malta are featured at the bottom right on the stamp.
Founded in 1974, the Monegasque Association supports major medical, social and humanitarian projects in the Principality and around the world, and counts Prince Albert II among its 31 members.
To note that the Monaco postal administration also issued a stamp on the same theme on May 7, 2024.
Official relations between the Order of Malta and the Principality of Monaco began in 1957, with official diplomatic relations established in 2007.

Merci beaucoup Salvatore !
As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2024, underwater fauna and flora ("fauna e flora subacquee" in Italian), highlights the biodiversity of European waters that suffer from overfishing, pollution and climate change and which have to be protected for future generations.
To interpret this theme, Vatican City has logically chosen aquatic attractions located in the Vatican Gardens (covering more than half of the territory's surface area), in particular the Eagle Fountain and a body of water located in front of Villa Pia.
The Vatican postal administration thus put into circulation, on May 21, 2024, two stamps (design: Bimba Landmann, print run: 39,000), printed (by Joh. Enschedé) each in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, used on the cover below sent on November 12, 2024. Thank you very much Salvatore!

The first stamp (€1.25) depicts the Eagle Fountain ("Fontana dell'Aquilone"), with submerged rocks on which you can see a species of aquatic lichen, Porpidia ochrolemma, and a species of amphibian, the marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), the largest native frog in Europe.
This fountain was created for Pope Paul V in the years 1611-1612 on the occasion of the repair of the ancient Aqua Paola aqueduct, which brought water to the Vatican.
The other stamp (€1.30) illustrates the body of water located in front of the access staircase to Villa Pia ("Casina Pio IV"), with the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the background, where the white water lily (Nymphaea alba) blooms and specimens of American turtles live, whose preferred environment is lakes, ponds and rivers with slow, muddy watercourses and rich in aquatic plants.
This Renaissance-style building (1561, pontificate of Pius IV) is now home to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas.

"Villa Madama Accords" joint stamp with Vatican City, on cover from Italy
