EUROPA 2026 (70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps) stamps on FDC from Türkiye

The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamps, a philatelic initiative launched to strengthen relations between European countries and promote lasting peace and unity.
First issued in 1956 by six nations – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, founding members of the European Union – this program has gradually expanded to include 53 participating postal organizations.
Last year, PostEurop's Stamps and Philately Working Group organized an internal competition to choose a common design on the theme "70th Anniversary of the EUROPA Stamp: United by...".
Guided by shared values such as communication, innovation, cooperation, and common roots, the members submitted 15 creative proposals, each presenting a unique vision.
Following a vote by 50 postal organizations, the Finnish Post (Posti) won the competition, ahead of the Post of Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo) and the Post of Luxembourg.
The design by artist and graphic designer Klaus Welp will therefore be featured on the EUROPA stamps issued in 2026.

On May 9, 2026 (Europe Day), the Turkish Post (Ptt) issued a unique EUROPA stamp featuring the design by Klaus Welp.
This stamp (45 TRY, print run: 100,000) appears in three copies on the official First Day Cover above (with postmark from Ankara), sent from Istanbul on June 16, 2026. Many thanks, Tolga!
This EUROPA stamp combines abstract and symbolic elements. The diagonally ascending dotted line represents both the perforation of a stamp and the progressive work of the PostEurop. The seven dots, connected by a straight line, symbolize seventy years of unified effort by postal operators across the continent.
The blending gradients and dotted patterns in the background form a cohesive and vibrant surface, reflecting the joyful mix of colours from the European flag and symbolizing the unity of all member nations.
It is worth noting that Türkiye issued its first EUROPA stamps in 1958 (featuring a tree stump) but did not reproduce the common design selected that year—a dove flying over the letter "E" of Europe (by the Dutch artist André Van der Vossen)—which was intended to illustrate the theme "Peace in the Service of European Ideas".

Euromed Postal 2019, 2020, 2022, 2024 stamps on cover from Türkiye

A huge thank you, Tolga, for this impressive cover from Türkiye, sent on October 21, 2025, from Istanbul, including the "Euromed Postal" issues (souvenirs sheets and stamps) released in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2024 resepectively.
Mediterranean costumes was the theme chosen for the 2019 "Euromed Postal" issues, and the Turkish Post released a lovely series (2 stamps, 2 TRY, print run: 100,000 each) on July 8, 2019, depicting folk costumes for women, particularly an outfit called "bindallı" worn in the Gaziantep region. It features floral motifs on red silk or velvet fabric using the dival technique and silver thread. The bride's headdress incorporates gold and silver jewelry, a necklace adorned with gold coins, and a gold belt around her waist.
The other stamp depicts a wedding dress from the Antalya region, adorned with pearls, sequins, and tassels. The same decorations are visible on the belt and short vest.
The stamp in the lower left corner (5 TRY, print run: 100,000), in two copies, is the "Euromed Postal" stamp issued on July 19, 2022. It illustrates the theme of Mediterranean maritime archaeology, specifically the shipwreck discovered by a sponge diver in 1982 in the Uluburun area of Kaş.
The various artifacts recovered from this wreck (149 amphorae, copper and glass ingots, amber beads, etc.) are on display in the Uluburun Room of the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The remains uncovered during the excavations of the Uluburun shipwreck date back to the late Bronze Age (approximately 1600-1200 BC), making the wreck the oldest known ocean-going vessel in the world.

The souvenir sheet (3 stamps, 2 x 3 TRY, 1 x 5.50 TRY, print run: 100,000) in the upper left corner, issued on July 13, 2020, illustrates the theme of traditional Mediterranean gastronomy.
Turkish cuisine is one of the important riches of Turkey's cultural heritage, reflecting the geography in which it flourishes in a vibrant way. The use of meat and fermented dairy products from Central Asian nomads, grains from Mesopotamia, and fruits and vegetables from the Mediterranean, combined with spices from South Asia, have shaped modern Turkish food culture.
With the Maiden's Tower in Istanbul (12th century, built on a small island in the Bosphorus Strait) in the background, this souvenir sheet illustrates Turkish tea with sesame rings, a sweet pudding called "aşure" (consisting of a mixture of seeds, fruits, dried fruits, and nuts) with baklava, and Turkish coffee with biscuits.
The souvenir sheet (2 x 29 TRY, print run: 100,000) in the upper right, issued on July 8, 2024, is dedicated to Mediterranean sports.
In Turkey, the emergence of sports was influenced primarily by martial prowess rather than by early religions. In Turkish culture, these sports are divided into two categories: equestrian and non-equestrian sports.
Among the traditional equestrian sports are: gökbörü, çevgen, beyge, alaman beyge, kizkovar, cop, topuz çarptırganı, sağmen, tellal, çambı atmay, ctlanay çarpış, oğdarış, öpkü çarpış, kunan yarış, cırga tartu...
Of these sports, çevgen is known internationally as "polo." Horse riding is a sport that originated with the Turks, as the horse was first domesticated in Turkey.
Regarding non-equestrian Turkish sports, palvan wrestling, apan wrestling, oil wrestling, aba wrestling, shalwar wrestling, flag wrestling, karsak wrestling, and karakucak wrestling are currently popular in Turkish society.
The sultans' support for wrestling, along with the establishment of tekke (sports training centers) to train athletes, increased the importance of wrestling, the ancestral Turkish sport.
Other traditional sports (depicted in the margins of the souvenir sheet) include: tomak, ordo, aşık, matrak, sword and shield combat (kılıç-kalkan), mass gathering (gürz kaldırma), kızgıntaş, çelik-çomak, castle destruction (kale yıkma), tug-of-war (urgan çekme), taz süzüştürü, kösgüç...

Euromed Postal 2025 s/s and EUROPA 2025 stamp on cover from Türkiye

The Turkish Post issued its first Euromed Postal stamps in 2018 ("Mediterranean Houses") and, on July 7, 2025, put into circulation a beautiful souvenir sheet illustrating the common theme of Resources of the Mediterranean ("Akdeniz’in Kaynakları" in Turkish).
This souvenir sheet (35 TRY, print run: 100,000) is present on the official FDC below, with cancellation from Antalya (sea turtle), sent on August 29, 2025, from Istanbul. Thank you very much, Tolga!
As a reminder, the first international Mediterranean postal convention was signed in Marseille on July 9, 2007. Since then, the Postal Union for the Mediterranean (PUMed), a restricted union of the UPU, was created on March 11, 2011, and currently includes postal operators from 23 Mediterranean countries (also including Portugal and Mauritania).
Since 2014, some of these countries have issued "Euromed Postal" stamps each year, illustrating a common theme: the Resources of the Mediterranean in 2025.

This souvenir sheet evokes different types of resources, those linked to wind power (wind turbines) or those linked to marine biodiversity (turtles, seals) and tourism through the country's many ancient sites, the theater of Ephesus in particular.
Tolga also used the EUROPA stamp (35 TRY, print run: 100,000) issued on May 9, 2025 (Europe Day) in the lower right, illustrating this year's theme of national archaeological discoveries ("Ulusal Arkeolojik Keşifler" in Turkish).
This stamp is dedicated to the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012), in Anatolia, famous for its wall paintings (aurochs, deer, hunters, as illustrated on the stamp) and the magnificently preserved architectural spaces that sometimes give it the air of prehistoric Pompeii.
Çatalhöyük provides important evidence of the transition from settled villages to urban agglomeration, which was maintained in the same location for over 2,000 years (between 7400 and 5200 BC).
The third stamp above (20 TRY, print run: 100,000) is part of a series (2 stamps) issued on March 4, 2024, dedicated to photographer Ara Güler (1928-2018).
A former Magnum photographer, Ara Güler began his career as a press photographer in the 1950s. He was considered one of the greatest of his generation: a tireless observer of the city of Istanbul (photo of the Karaköy district, 1957 on the stamp) and a talented portraitist.

EUROPA 2024 (Underwater Fauna and Flora) stamp on FDC from Türkiye

As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2024, underwater fauna and flora ("Su Altı Faunası ve Florası" in Turkish), highlights the biodiversity of European waters which suffer from overfishing, pollution and climate change and which must be protected for future generations.
On May 9, 2024 (Europe Day), the Turkish Post put into circulation a unique EUROPA stamp (20 TRY, print run: 100,000) illustrating this theme, in particular different species of fish, moray eels, sharks and corals of the Mediterranean sea.
This stamp appears in two copies on the official FDC below (print run: 2,500) with postmarks from Ankara, sent on June 10, 2024 from Istanbul. Thank you very much Tolga!
Tolga also used the EUROPA stamp (10 TRY, print run: 100,000) issued on May 9, 2023 illustrating the theme of "
Peace - the highest value of humanity", echoing the aggression of Ukraine by Russia started in February 2022.

As a reminder, to illustrate this 2023 theme, PostEurop organized a competition within the member countries and it's the Luxembourg Post's "Peace Knot" project (authors: Linda Bos and Runa Egilsdottir - A Designers' Collective) which was chosen and reproduced on EUROPA stamps issued in 2023.
The last three stamps above (5 TRY, print run: 100,000 each) constitute the EUROPA series (2 stamps) issued on May 9, 2022, dedicated to the theme of stories and myths, in particular the epic of Köroğlu, an important legend in the oral traditions of the Turkic peoples.
In Turkish, köroğlu means "son of the blind man" and refers to a famous troubadour whose reputation spread throughout the Caucasus, but also in Persia and Central Asia. However, the common theme across all versions is that of the hero defending his clan or tribe against external threats. In many of these versions, Köroğlu earns his name from the mistaken blinding of his father, an act for which he seeks revenge and which initiates a whole series of adventures. He is described as both a bandit and a poet. Opposed to the rich, resistant to authority, he comes to the aid of the poor.

"Olympic Games Tokyo 2020" stamp set on cover from Turkey

On July 23, 2021, the opening day, the Turkish Post put into circulation a series of 2 stamps dedicated to the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (32nd Olympiad), organized from July 23 to August 8, 2021 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
These two very successful stamps (3.00 TL and 6.50 TL - print run: 100,000 each) were used on the cover below sent on August 20, 2021 from Istanbul. Thank you very much Tolga!
If I am not mistaken, the Turkish Post has issued stamps on the occasion of the Summer Olympic Games since 1956 and the Melbourne Games, Turkey having participated for the first time in the Olympic Games in 1908 in London with only one athlete engaged in gymnastics.

Curiously, no stamp had been issued about the previous edition of the Olympic Games, in Rio in 2016 ...

In Tokyo, the Turkish delegation was made up of 108 athletes (58 men, 50 women) engaged in 18 sports, 6 of which are illustrated on these two stamps: karate, shooting, cycling, women's volleyball, athletics and wrestling.
13 medals (a record since 1908) were won by the Turkish delegation in 6 different sports (boxing, archery, wrestling, taekwondo, gymnastics, karate), including two gold thanks to Mete Gazoz (archery men's individual) and Busenaz Sürmeneli (women's boxing, welterweight), already world champion in 2019.
Elements reminding Japanese traditions, sakura (cherry tree) blossoms, a bridge, the silhouettes of a temple and a castle, a rising sun, are featured on these two stamps, as well as the emblem of the Turkish National Olympic Committee and the logo of these Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Euromed Postal 2021 (Handicraft Jewelry in the Mediterranean) s/s on FDC from Turkey

July 12, 2021 was chosen (with some exceptions) as the date of issue of a joint stamp between several Mediterranean countries (it's the case since 2014), entitled "Euromed Postal" devoted to the theme of "Handicraft Jewelry in the Mediterranean" this year.
After the "Traditional Gastronomy in the Mediterranean" in 2020, the 16 participating postal administrations (to date) have this year issued stamps dedicated to different types of traditional jewelry from around the Mediterranean Sea.
As a reminder, on July 9, 2007, the first international Mediterranean postal convention was signed in Marseille.
Since that date, the Postal Union for the Mediterranean (PUMed), a restricted union of the UPU, was created on March 11, 2011 and currently includes postal operators from 23 countries of the Mediterranean basin (also including Portugal and Mauritania).

The Turkish Post issued its first Euromed Postal stamps in 2018 ("Houses of the Mediterranean") and, as in 2020, once again put into circulation this year a souvenir sheet (1 stamp) illustrating this theme of handcrafted jewelry ("El Sanatı Takılar "in Turkish).
Many thanks Tolga for this lovely letter regarding this souvenir sheet (6.50 TL, print run: 100,000), designed by Irmak Çam and Leyla Aydın Kara, sent on the first day of issue from Istanbul!
This souvenir sheet illustrates an ancestral Anatolian technique used in the making of jewelry, called "telkâri" (filigree), a decorative art similar to fine-looking lace obtained by curling or wrapping thin silver or gold wires to form various patterns or by soldering them on a metal background.

"Architecture - Mosques" joint m/s with Russia, on cover from Turkey

On June 3, 1920, the USSR and the Republic of Turkey officially established diplomatic relations, with Soviet Russia being one of the first states to recognize the government of Kemal Atatürk.
A friendship treaty was then signed in 1925 and Turkey was then one of the rare countries to oppose the isolation of the USSR.
In the contemporary period and despite the Russo-Turkish crisis of 2015, the two countries have developed their relations, in particular within the framework of the Syrian civil war.
Russia supplies nearly 60% of gas to Turkey, and before the health crisis, Russia was the top source of foreign tourism to Turkey.
In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of these diplomatic relations, the postal administrations of the two countries put into circulation, on November 3, 2020, a joint series (2 stamps) devoted to architecture and to mosques in particular.

The Turkish Post has put into circulation these two stamps (6.50 TL each) in the form of a nice souvenir sheet (print run: 100,000) used on this cover sent on June 4, 2021 from the city of Mersin. Thank you very much Tolga!
The stamp above on the left is dedicated to the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, built between 1550 and 1557 by the architect Sinan for Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. The silhouette of this mosque, with its impressive dome (53m high, 27m in diameter) and its four minarets, dominates the skyline of the southern shore of the Golden Horn and is one of the most significant constructions of Ottoman Turkish architecture.
The other stamp shows the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Russia and Europe, rebuilt in 2015 (Byzantine style) to replace a first building built in 1904 for the Tatar community.
The presidents of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, participated in the inauguration ceremony of this mosque, characterized by its main golden dome (46m high) and its 2 minarets (78m high).

"Bishkek Central Mosque" joint s/s with Kyrgyzstan, on cover from Turkey

On September 2, 2008, the Central Mosque of Bishkek, dedicated to Imam al-Sarakhsi, was inaugurated in the presence of the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sooronbay Jeenbekov, and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
This mosque, considered as one of the largest in Central Asia (the mosque can accommodate 30,000 people at once), was indeed built (from 2012) by the Diyanet foundation tied to Turkey's state-run Presidency of Religious Affairs (DİB).
With its 4 minarets with a height of 68 meters each, its 37-meter-high large dome, which is 25 meters in diameter, its structure in white Turkish marble, the architecture of this Central Mosque of Bishkek is very close to the Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara.
This mosque is named after a prominent Islamic scholar and preacher, Imam al-Sarakhsi, who lived in the 11th century in this region of Central Asia.

On December 21, 2020, the Kyrgyz Express Post (KEP) and the Turkish Post put into circulation a joint souvenir sheet dedicated to this Central Mosque of Bishkek.
Designed by Irmak Çam and Daria Maier, the Turkish version of this souvenir sheet (6.50 TL, print run: 100,000) is present on this cover sent on July 16, 2021 from Bursa. Thank you very much Tolga!
The flags of the two countries are present in the top margin of this souvenir sheet.

Islam was introduced late to Kyrgyzstan (90% of the population is Muslim today), unlike other Central Asian countries, and Muslims faced oppression during the Soviet era. Islam flourished after the fall of the communist regime and the number of mosques increased.

EUROPA 2021 (Endangered National Wildlife) stamp set on cover from Turkey

On May 9, 2021, the Turkish Post put into circulation two stamps (only one stamp in 2020) as part of the EUROPA issues whose theme this year is devoted to endangered national wildlife ("Nesli tükenmekte olan ulusal yaban hayatı" in turkish).
These two stamps (print run: 100,000) were used on this cover sent on June 1, 2021 from Ankara, the capital. Thank you very much Tolga!
The first stamp (3 TL) is dedicated to the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), the most endangered marine mammal in Europe, with a total population estimated at 700 individuals.

This species is observed in particular in ranges located off Africa or in the Aegean Sea where the Sporades Islands Marine Park (Greece) is a protected breeding site for this species.
This same seal species is also featured on one of the two EUROPA stamps issued this year by the Republic of Cyprus.
The other stamp (6.50 TL) depicts a Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus), a small raptor whose nesting range extends from western Europe to Central Asia, including the regions from central (Anatolia) and eastern Turkey.
This bird is not particularly threatened but, nesting on the ground, often in cereal crops, becomes scarce in regions where there is a strong agricultural activity (risk of destruction of nests).

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp on FDC from Turkey

Contrary to previous years, the Turkish Post PTT only issued one EUROPA stamp this year, illustrating the theme of the ancient postal routes ("Tarihi Posta Yolları" in Turkish).
Only one stamp (5.50 TL, print run: 100,000) but of an impressive format (45 x 90 mm)!
A big thank you Ersel for this splendid official FDC regarding this stamp, with First Day postmarks of May 9, 2020 from Ankara (postal seal), sent on May 29, 2020 from the city of Izmir!
This stamp, designed by Önnur Toprak, very successful, evokes the different postal routes starting from Istanbul, at the time of the Ottoman Empire.

The route network of the Ottoman Empire was distributed at its peak on 3 continents, with 6 main roads, called "kol", starting from Istanbul, 3 towards Europe (via Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli) and 3 towards Asia (via Bursa, Söğüt, Bolu).
Secondary roads also existed to reach the most isolated populations.
At the end of the 16th century, the length of the main roads was 8,351 km, 15,800 km for secondary roads.
Post relays were installed at regular intervals on these main roads, the main mission of which was to supply horses to the messengers, responsible for transporting letters and official documents.
Some messengers called "lackeys", running (mainly between Istanbul and Edirne) were also in charge of announcing the orders of the Sultan.
A lackey is particularly represented on this stamp between these two cities, with the presence of their splendid mosques, Blue Mosque (17th century) and Selimiye Mosque (16th century).

A big thank you Ersel for this interesting official FDC from Turkey about this Turkey-Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) joint stamp issued on October 17, 2016, dedicated to the commissioning in 2015 of the water supply project between these two territories!
The Turkish version of this stamp below (1.60 TL), very large and without any perforation, has been printed in 100,000 copies (only 4,000 for the stamp from Northern Cyprus, value: 4 TL).
This water supply project ("Su Temin Projesi" in Turkish) was created to provide potable and irrigation water between southern Turkey and the northern part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus via a 107 km-long pipeline under the Mediterranean Sea.
This water transfer project via pipeline between two countries (planned for a period of 50 years) is considered to be unique in the world.

This project consisted in the construction of a dam and a pumping station on both sides as well as a pipeline passing mainly under the sea.
This joint stamp is featuring a satellite view of Turkey and the island of Cyprus, symbolically linked by this pipeline made up of water and flags of the two territories.
At each end of this pipeline is mentioned the dam which was built specially for this project, Alaköprü dam in Turkey (built between 2010 and 2014) and Geçitköy dam in Northern Cyprus (built between 2012 and 2014).
Photographs of these two dams are reproduced on the left on this FDC, with postmarks from the Turkish city of Mersin, the Alaköprü dam being located in the Mersin Province.

Transport and Anatolian Civilizations (Hittites) stamps on cover from Turkey

Thank you very much Vural for this interesting letter sent on May 4, 2011 from the city of Selçuk, near Izmir and the famous archaeological site of Ephesus!
But Selçuk is also well-known for its shrine, the House of the Virgin Mary ("Meryemana Evi" in Turkish), featured on the illustrated postmark below. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary was taken in this place by John the Evangelist after the crucifixion of the Christ. She remained there until her Assumption into heaven.
The stamp on the left (bus, road interchange and 1st or 2nd Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul) is part of a series of 5 stamps, issued on May 27, 2009, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The other stamp (0.60 Turkish lira) is part of a very nice series (4 stamps), issued on March 30, 2007, dedicated to the Anatolian civilizations, the Hittites here.
Before collapsing around 1200 BC, the Hittite kingdom was one of the most powerful in the Middle East, occupying the region of present-day Anatolia, the island of Cyprus and much of Syria, often in conflict with Egypt or Assyria.
The history and civilization of the Hittites were reconstructed by researchers from the end of the 19th century thanks to the excavations of Anatolian sites, in particular Boğazkale where the remains of Hattusa, the ancient capital of the kingdom, are located. Thousands of cuneiform tablets documenting several aspects of the political, religious and economic life of the Hittite kingdom have been discovered there.
The stamp above represents a bas-relief carved in a basalt rock, located in the Room B of the archaeological site of Yazılıkaya, located northeast of Hattusa, which may have been used for the funeral worship of King Tudhaliya IV.
This bas-relief is entitled "12 gods of the Underworld" or "12 gods carrying beasts to sacrifice".

In order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of these relations between the 2 countries, the postal administrations of Turkey and Mongolia put into circulation (on June 24, 2019 in Turkey, on July 29, 2019 in Mongolia) an interesting joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps + central label).

The central label represents the logo of this 50th anniversary, with the number 0 including the flags of Turkey and Mongolia (also present on the First Day postmark from Ankara).
The stamp on the left features a tulip, the national flower of Turkey, and an airplane of the national airline of Mongolia, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, flying over Istanbul and in particular the Bosphorus bridge ("Boğaziçi Köprüsü"), inaugurated in 1973 and renamed the 15 July Martyrs Bridge in 2016.
The other stamp represents a Scabiosa Butterfly Blue, national flower of Mongolia, with an official plane of the Republic of Turkey in the background and a Mongolian woman in the foreground, during a traditional welcome ceremony.
The illustration on the left on this envelope reproduces the one appearing in the margins of this joint souvenir sheet, evoking a camel caravan on the Silk Road between the 2 countries, with mention of sites of the two countries (from right to left): fountain of the silver tree in Karakorum, ancient capital of the Mongol empire in the 13th century, Çobandede bridge (eastern Turkey) which would have been built at the end of the 13th century when Anatolia was occupied by the Mongols, citadel of Ankara (dating from Roman times) and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (6th century).

Gandhi is represented inside a circle bearing the colors of the Indian flag (saffron and green), with several birds on the top left (doves of peace I suppose) but I do not know what this stamp's background refers to (a white part on gray background)?

This archeological site of Arslantepe (located near the present-day city of Malatya, in south-eastern Turkey) and its palace dating back to 4,000 BC in particular, is a unique visible testimony of the crucial process of formation of the State, hosting a hierarchical administration.

This site was later occupied during the Bronze Age and a Neo-Hittite period, between 1200 and 700 BC.
