UPAEP 2019 stamps (Traditional dishes) on FDC from Honduras

After pets in 2018 and before architecture in 2020 and tourism in 2021, the theme chosen in 2019 for the América-UPAEP stamp issues was devoted to gastronomy and traditional dishes ("Comidas tradicionales" in Spanish) in particular.
As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories.
Like EUROPA stamps, UPAEP stamps are issued each year since 1989 by about a dozen countries.
The postal administration of Hondurras "Honducor" put into circulation, on July 25, 2019, a series of 3 different UPAEP stamps (print run: 60,000 each) illustrating this theme of traditional dishes (from photographs by Oscar David).

These 3 stamps are present on the official First Day cover above, with cancellation from Tegucigalpa, the capital. Thank you very much Sonia!
The stamp on the top left (5 lempiras) is dedicated to Honduran "Nacatamales", a popular dish (also in neighboring Nicaragua), particularly during the Nativity celebrations at the end of the year.
This dish made of cornmeal, pork or chicken, cooked rice and potatoes, is cooked in banana leaves.
The next stamp (25 lempiras) features a dish called "Sopa de tortas de pescado" ("Fish cake soup"), made with dried fish, coconut milk, cornmeal, eggs and tomatoes, eaten during the Holy Week, accompanied by white rice and lemon juice.
The last stamp (5 lempiras) is devoted to a sweet dish called "Rosquillas en miel" ("Honey fritters"), a traditional indigenous recipe during the Holy Week or the end of year festivities.
Eaten as an aperitif or as a dessert, this dish is made of donut dough, capadura, cinnamon and cloves.

Special cover "Renaissance of the town hall of La Rochelle" from France

One of the most remarkable sites of this city, the town hall of La Rochelle (Prefecture of Charente-Maritime) was devastated (roofs and frames of the historic part of the building) by a terrible fire on June 28, 2013.
After more than 6 years of works and restoration, this building reopened its doors at the end of 2019 and, on this occasion, the Amicale Philatélique Aunisienne exhibited a series of old postcards dedicated to this town hall of La Rochelle, during a philatelic exhibition organized on December 14 and 15, 2019.
A collector made up of 4 different personalized stamps (the town hall in the last century, the burned town hall, the period of the works and the reopening) was issued during this event.

One of these 4 stamps (reopening) was also printed separately in a sheet, at the "Green Letter 20g" rate (selling price: € 1.50).
It is that stamp which was used on the special cover above, with associated postmarks with mentions "Renaissance of the Town hall" and "La Rochelle, what a story!" in French, put into circulation by a temporary office of La Poste during this exhibition.
To note on this envelope the signature of the artist and painter Joël Lemaine (born in 1954 in SP&M), installed in the region and who designed this collector dedicated to this building.
Joël Lemaine has created numerous stamps (boats, ropes, lighthouses ...) in recent years for the postal administration of SP&M.
The town hall of La Rochelle (mainly Renaissance and flamboyant Gothic styles) is the building that has housed the town hall of this city since 1298 and is considered to be the oldest town hall still in operation in France.
A historic monument since 1861, this building was largely restored at the end of the 19th century.

"Green March 44th anniversary" stamp on FDC from Morocco

The Green March refers to a great peaceful march (350000 volunteers) departing from Morocco on November 6, 1975 towards the Spanish Sahara (current Western Sahara), launched by King Hassan II in order to recover this territory colonized by Spain since 1884, considered historically linked to Morocco.
The Madrid Agreement signed on November 14, 1975 then ratified the Spanish withdrawal from Western Sahara, restoring the southern part of that territory to Mauritania and the northern part to Morocco.
Since that date, sovereignty over this former Spanish colony is still disputed between Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), proclaimed by the Polisario Front supported by Algeria.

After years of fighting, a ceasefire was signed in 1991. Today, even though Morocco controls most of the territory administratively, the UN does not recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, considered as a non-autonomous territory ...
Since 1975, the Moroccan Post Barid Al-Maghrib is issuing almost every year a stamp devoted to this Green March, which was again the case on November 6, 2019 with a stamp (9 dirhams, design: N. Noury, print run; 100,000) devoted to the 44rd anniversary of this manifestation.
That stamp is present on this official numbered FDC (No. 696), sent on December 11, 2019 from Meknes. Thank you very much Pierre!
A map of Morocco (also represented on the envelope) including this territory of Western Sahara, is present in the background on this stamp evoking a desert landscape, with a focus on the foreground on the cultural heritage of this territory, traditional jewelry here, solid silver anklets called "Khalkhal" worn by Sahrawi women.

The Thai Post printed these two stamps in the same sheet composed of 16 stamps (8 pairs) while the two Filipino stamps were printed in a sheetlet of 8 stamps (4 pairs).
These stamps, including the flags of the two countries, are dedicated to the carabao, a species of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), the national animal of the Philippines and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), the national animal of Thailand.
The sacred elephant symbolizes the glorious history and culture of Thailand while the carabao represents the strength and perseverance of the Filipino people.
These two animals are symbols of the strong friendship between the two countries, which officially established diplomatic relations on June 14, 1949.
Relations between the two countries then progressed in various fields, notably the economy, trade, security and culture.
Thailand is one of the main trading partners of the Philippines and the two countries are founding members of ASEAN, established in Bangkok in 1967.

"Christmas 2019" stamps on special covers from Germany

The Deutsche Post has put into circulation two Christmas (Weihnachten) stamps in 2019, respectively on October 10 (stained glass window - Nativity scene) and November 2 (Christmas with friends).
These two stamps were used on this pretty letter with special cancellation of December 27, 2019 from the city of Kiel (Land of Schleswig-Holstein) in the north of the country. Thank you very much Maxim!
This postmark, with a slogan "Happy new year and good luck for 2020", was specially edited by the Deutsche Post on the occasion of the End-of-Year Fair ("Eindejaarsbeurs") organized on December 27 and 28, 2019 in the Dutch city of Barneveld (center of the country).
This exhibition is particularly devoted to stamps, coins and postcards.

I do not know exactly if this character of chimney sweep depicted on the postmark has a relationship with this city of Barneveld or if he evokes the cleaning of chimneys for the arrival of Santa Claus ...
The charity stamp above on the right (€ 0.80 + € 0.40) was designed by Marvin Hüttermann from a stained glass window (dating from the 12th century) of the Chartres cathedral in France, representing a scene of the Nativity.
With its 72 stained glass windows representing some 5000 characters for a surface of 2600 m², the Chartres cathedral has the richest collection of old stained glass in Europe.

The other Christmas stamp (€ 0.80) was also used on the 2nd cover above, sent on November 14, 2019 from the village of Himmelpfort. Thank you very much Jens!
This stamp, designed by Jennifer Dengler, is entitled "Christmas with friends" ("Weihnachten mit Freunden") with a joyful representation showing Santa Claus, a polar bear and an Eskimo child accompanied by forest animals (bear, fox, reindeer or deer).
This village of Himmelpfort ("Gate of Heaven") located in the Land of Brandenburg should not be confused with Himmelpforten (Land of Lower Saxony), known as the "Santa Claus village" ("Christkinddorf") and where is located, since 1966, the official post office of the German Santa Claus.
The special postmark above, including the mention "Weihnachtspostfiliale", however represents a Santa Claus (or Saint Nicolas).
These two Christmas stamps were each printed in a sheetlet of 10 gummed stamps as well as in a "Markenset" booklet composed of 10 self-adhesive stamps.

"75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge" postmark on cover from Luxembourg

The Battle of the Bulge (Battle of the Ardennes), also known as the "Ardennes Counteroffensive", was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during the 2nd World War, from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945.
The Battle of the Bulge ended at the end of January 1945, after the Germans were driven back beyond their starting line.
This battle was launched through the densely wooded Ardennes region of Wallonia in eastern Belgium, north-eastern France and Luxembourg, when the local population hoped that with the liberation in September 1944, the war was definitely finished for the Grand Duchy ...
This offensive aimed to stop the use of the Belgian port of Antwerp by the Allies and to divide and destroy the Allied lines and force the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in favor of the Axis powers.

Luxembourg was strongly marked by this battle, in particular in the region of Wiltz in the north of the country, a city liberated by American troops on January 21, 1945.
Many civilian and military victims have been identified in Wiltz (500 civilian victims throughout the Grand Duchy), which was named a martyr city after the war.
On December 16, 2019, a special postmark was put into circulation in Wiltz (L-9500) to commemorate the 75th anniversary of this Battle of the Bulge.
This postmark (US army jeep with Ardennes forest in the background) has been applied to the letter above, franked with a permanent rate stamp "E50g" corresponding to a shipment up to 50g to Europe (€ 1.05 currently). Thank you very much Laurent!
This stamp is part of a series of 3 stamps (engraved by Martin Mörck and printed in France by Phil@poste) issued on March 3, 2015 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Grand Duke Henri, Head of State since 2000.
To note that the Luxembourg Post also issued a stamp, on December 3, 2019, dedicated to this Battle of the Bulge.

"Black Ceres / Marianne l'engagée" ATM stamp on FDCs from France

As part of the 73rd Salon Philatélique d'Automne organized in Paris from 7 to 9 November 2019, the French Post put in circulation a special booklet (design: Sarah Lazarevic), honoring the current Marianne ("L'engagée") définitive stamp and the Black Ceres, on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the issue of first French stamp.
On the same theme, a LISA (ATM stamp) was also put into circulation during this exhibition.
Phil@poste marketed a pack of four LISA (€ 4.09: Ecopli - Green Letter - Priority Letter - International, print run: 6,000 packs) and a NABANCO machine also made it possible to purchase it (print run: 20,000).

This LISA (Ecopli - € 0.86 until December 31, 2019), designed by Sarah Lazarevic, is present on the First Day cover above, with the signature of Elsa Catelin who engraved this Marianne l'engagée (Priority Letter rate) reproduced in the middle, next to an updated Ceres (mention "La Poste 2019" and value of € 1.05).

This LISA (Ecopli rate too) also appears on this 2nd cover above, with again this ugly double mechanical cancellation applied on November 12, 2019 by the Wissous mail platform (code 38276A) ...
Sarah Lazarevic signed on this envelope at the top left and the cancellation evokes another special issue of the French Post during this Salon Philatélique d'Automne, a souvenir sheet of 4 stamps representing this same Black Ceres (original work by Jacques-Jean Barre), revisited by the illustrator and engraver Louis Boursier.

"UNESCO World Heritage - Falconry" stamp set on FDC from South Korea

The practice of falconry, originally used for hunting and obtaining food, has evolved over time to be more associated today with nature conservation, cultural heritage and social engagement within and amongst communities.
Following their own set of traditions and ethical principles, falconers train, fly and breed birds of prey (falcons, but also eagles and hawks) developing a bond with them and becoming their main source of protection.
The practice, present in many countries around the world, may vary regarding certain aspects, for example the type of equipment used but the methods remain similar.
"Falconry, a living human heritage" was listed in 2016 by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, associating South Korea but also 17 other countries (Germany, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Mongolia, Pakistan, Portugal, Qatar, Syrian Arab Republic and Czech Republic).

On November 27, 2019, the Korean Post put into circulation a splendid series (two different shape's 380 won stamps), designed by Ryu, Ji-hyeong, devoted to falconry.
These two stamps were printed by Royal Joh. Enschedé in the same sheet composed of 10 stamps, 2 stamps being present at the top of the sheet, with an ancient representation of this practice of falconry (work of art from the National Museum of Korea) in the background.
A big thank you Ji-Ho for this beautiful First Day cover regarding this sheet's top, with cancellations from Nambusan!
These two stamps respectively represent a falconer in traditional dress and a falcon catching prey (pheasant).
Falconry has a long history in Korea (more than 2000 years), as evidenced by a painting found in a tomb of Goguryeo, and in particular during the Joseon period.
As shown in "Jewang Ungi", a historical poem composed during the Goryeo period, the falcon was considered a sacred animal representing the soul of Korean people.
According to this poem, the name of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, was once called "Eungjun" ("hawk").

This stamp (€ 1.05, print run: 40,000, design: Créaphil), printed by Phil@poste in sheetlet of 10 stamps, was used on the special envelope above, sent on November 30, 2019 from this "MonacoPhil 2019" exhibition. Thank you very much Olivier!

Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) on cover from Egypt

Modern relations between Egypt and India date back to contacts between Saad Zaghloul, leader of the El-Wafd party, and Mahatma Gandhi on the common objectives of their respective independence movements.
Gandhi visited Egypt in 1931, passing through Port Said on his journey by boat to England where he was due to attend a conference. In Port Said, Gandhi was welcomed by a delegation from Egypt's El-Wafd party.
The Egyptian population remained very attached to the principles of non-violence defended by Gandhi, including during the demonstrations of 2011 on Tahrir Square which led to the resignation of President Mubarak ...
The Egyptian Post therefore logically, like a hundred other postal administrations around the world, issued a stamp in 2019 dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948).

This stamp (£E 5) was put into circulation on November 6, 2019, during a ceremony in Cairo in the presence of Egyptian ministers and officials and the Ambassador of India to Egypt, Rahul Kulshresth.
Thank you very much Mohammed for this nice letter sent on December 11, 2019 from Cairo, more precisely from the "Pyramids" Postal Services Center, franked with 3 copies of this stamp!
The same day, a Gandhi's bust was inaugurated in the Al-Horreya gardens in Cairo (Zamalek district).
Mahatma Gandhi ("Mahatma" meaning "venerable"), born in 1869 in Pordanbar (state of Gujarat), nicknamed the "Father of the Nation" in India, was one of the pioneers of the country's independence movement, advocating disobedience, non-violence and the concept of "swaraj" (self-determination).
He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic. Gandhi was the inspiration for many freedom and civil rights movements around the world.

Christmas 2019 stamps (angel and Zagreb cathedral) on cover from Croatia

Merci beaucoup Dragan !
As in the previous 4 years, the Croatian Post did not issue in 2019 any specific stamp to announce the new year but only a stamp dedicated to Christmas ("Božić" in Croatian) declined both in gummed version (sheet of 20 stamps, print run: 1,000,000) and in a self-adhesive version (booklet of 10 stamps, print run: 20,000 booklets).
Two self-adhesive versions and one gummed version of this stamp (permanent rate "A" for a domestic shipment up to 50g - currently HRK 3.10, design: Ivana Vučić and Tomislav-Jurica Kačunić), issued on November 22, 2019, have been used on the nice letter below, sent from the city of Rijeka (date of sending not readable). Thank you very much Dragan!

The word "Božić" is printed (by AKD d.o.o. in Zagreb) with a special golden ink.
This stamp evokes the Christmas atmosphere in Croatia and in Zagreb in particular, with a view of the facade of the Zagreb cathedral in the yellow background and a Christmas tree and a column surmounted by an angel statue in the foreground.
This column was erected next to the cathedral by Hermann Bollé (1845-1926), an Austrian architect who worked mainly in Croatia.
Hermann Bollé in particular led the reconstruction of the cathedral (construction began in the 11th century) badly damaged by a violent earthquake in 1880.
Bollé drew the two spires (108 meters high) framing the facade of this building, one of the most representative urban landmarks of the Croatian capital.

"Merry Christmas" 2019 stamp on FDC from Bulgaria

Merci beaucoup Borislav !
Since 1990, the Bulgarian Post issues each year one or two stamps specifically devoted to the Christmas festivities ("Koleda")
Before 1990, stamps were put into circulation at the end of the year but devoted to the upcoming New Year Wishes.
On November 22, 2019, the Bulgarian Post therefore issued a new stamp dedicated to Christmas, designed by Damyan Damyanov and representing a Christmas wreath, comprising the words "Merry Christmas" in Bulgarian and English, with a small rocking horse in the center.
This stamp (1.50 leva, print run: 20,000), printed in sheet of 40 stamps, is present on the First Day cover above sent by registered mail from Sofia. Thank you very much Borislav!

I really love this postmark applied with red ink, depicting a goblin and the words "Christmas 2019" ("Koleda 2019").
To note on this letter the mark "Таxe perçue" in French and the associated value (6.20 leva) in order to reach the tariff in force (7.70 leva) for a priority registered shipment up to 20g to France.
Bulgaria being a Christian Orthodox country, Christmas was traditionally celebrated on January 7 until 1967 when the Bulgarian church abandoned the Julian calendar in favor of the Gregorian calendar.
When the Communists came to power in 1944, religious practices (including Christmas) were discredited and it was not until 1989 that the freedom of worship practices and religious festivals were restored. Christmas then became a very popular festival, celebrated on December 25th.
In Bulgaria, there are two distinct stages in the Christmas celebration, Christmas Eve ("Badni Vetcher") and Christmas ("Koleda").

"Al Quds, capital of Palestine" joint stamp on FDC from Morocco

On October 9, 2019, the World Post Day, a new unified Arab postage stamp was put into circulation, having for theme this year "Al Quds, capital of Palestine".
This issue, eminently political, aims to recall the position of the member countries of the League of Arab States concerning the spiritual and religious status of Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem), considered as the capital of the state of Palestine.
Jerusalem has been a point of tension between Jews and Muslims for 70 years, the state of Israel having made West Jerusalem its capital in 1949 and then "reunited" Jerusalem in 1967.
For the international community, East Jerusalem is considered as "occupied" by Israel even though Jerusalem was proclaimed Israel's "eternal capital" in 1980 and then capital of Palestine in 1988, although the Palestinian Authority does not sit there.
According to the international community, the status of the city has to be negotiated between Israelis and Palestinians.

This joint stamp is clearly a response from the League of Arab States countries to the recent projects of embassy transfers of some countries in Israel to Jerusalem, the USA in particular ...
At a technical committee (held on February 7, 2019) evaluating the proposed models for the unified Arab postage stamp for the year 2019, the Arab countries have selected the project proposed by the Algerian ministry of Posts, a creation made by the visual artist Teyeb Laidi (born in 1971).
Thank you very much Pierre for this interesting First Day envelope (No 222) sent on December 11, 2019 from the city of Meknes, regarding this joint stamp (9 dirhams)!
To note this unusual postmark with mention "1er jour d'émission" ("1st day of issue") in French and Arabic ...
This stamp is featuring the Dome of the Rock which houses the "Rock of the foundation", the place where, according to the Muslim tradition, Muhammad arrived in Jerusalem from Mecca. With the Al-Aqsa Mosque, this site is one of the Muslim holy places on the Temple Mount.
A Palestinian flag, two doves as well as the emblem of the League of Arab States are also featured on this stamp.
To date, it seems that this joint stamp has been issued by Algeria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Qatar, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Tunisia.

"50 years of diplomatic relations" joint stamp set with Mongolia on FDC from Turkey

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Mongolia were established on June 24, 1969. Relations intensified in the 1990s and gained new momentum with the opening of reciprocal embassies in Ulaanbaatar and Ankara respectively in 1996 and 1997.
In order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of these relations between the 2 countries, the postal administrations of Turkey and Mongolia put into circulation (on June 24, 2019 in Turkey, on July 29, 2019 in Mongolia) an interesting joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps + central label).
The Turkish version of these stamps (2 TL, print run: 100,000 each) is present on the official FDC below, sent on November 26, 2019 from Istanbul. Thank you very much Tolga!
A third stamp (2 TL, print run: 100,000), issued on March 23, 2019, was used here, dedicated to the World Meteorological Day.

The central label represents the logo of this 50th anniversary, with the number 0 including the flags of Turkey and Mongolia (also present on the First Day postmark from Ankara).
The stamp on the left features a tulip, the national flower of Turkey, and an airplane of the national airline of Mongolia, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, flying over Istanbul and in particular the Bosphorus bridge ("Boğaziçi Köprüsü"), inaugurated in 1973 and renamed the 15 July Martyrs Bridge in 2016.
The other stamp represents a Scabiosa Butterfly Blue, national flower of Mongolia, with an official plane of the Republic of Turkey in the background and a Mongolian woman in the foreground, during a traditional welcome ceremony.
The illustration on the left on this envelope reproduces the one appearing in the margins of this joint souvenir sheet, evoking a camel caravan on the Silk Road between the 2 countries, with mention of sites of the two countries (from right to left): fountain of the silver tree in Karakorum, ancient capital of the Mongol empire in the 13th century, Çobandede bridge (eastern Turkey) which would have been built at the end of the 13th century when Anatolia was occupied by the Mongols, citadel of Ankara (dating from Roman times) and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (6th century).
