Lac Malawi et radio au Brésil

Lake Malawi and radio in Brazil

Merci beaucoup Marcelo :-)
I am happy to share with you the fifth and last part of the series "Diplomatic Relations" issued in 2010 by the Brazilian Post.
After Italy, Zambia, Egypt and Syria, Malawi is in the spotlight with a beautiful souvenir sheet, issued on July 6, 2010, consisting of three stamps devoted to Lake Malawi.
This sheet appears on the FDC below (with postmarks from Brasilia), mailed on April 27, 2011 from São Paulo. Thank you very much Marcelo :-)

A satellite view of Lake Malawi (560 km long and 75 km wide), shared by Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, is featured on the margins of this sheet with also the flag of Malawi in the top right.
The southern part of the lake is part of the Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1984.
This lake, one of the deepest in the world, is indeed an outstanding example of biological evolution with in particular more than 350 species of cichlid fish, most of them being endemic, presenting a scientific interest comparable to the famous Galapagos finches studied by Charles Darwin !
Three species of colorful cichlid fish are depicted on the stamps of this souvenir sheet.

Marcelo has also sent me the other FDC above concerning the stamp, issued on January 21, 2011, devoted to the 150th anniversary of the birth of telecommunications pioneer, Father Roberto Landell de Moura (1861-1928), considered as "the father of broadcasting in Brazil".
A portrait of this amateur scientist is reproduced on this stamp, speaking into the microphone of a "wave transmitter" that he invented. The background of the stamp features patent of this radio system that he registered in the United States in 1904.
A radio wave with amplitude modulation is finally shown at the lower left part, allowing the wireless transmission of the human voice over long distances...

Anniversaire de l'école vétérinaire à Lyon

Veterinary School in Lyon, France

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of veterinary education and of the veterinary profession, the year 2011 was declared World Veterinary Year (Vet2011).
This is indeed Claude Bourgelat (1712-1779) from Lyon, scholar and Grand Equerry of King Louis XV, who founded in Lyon in 1761 the first veterinary school in the world. Bourgelat is thus regarded as the founder of Veterinary Science.
The French Post has commemorated this anniversary by issuing in preview sale (on May 14 2011) on the site of VetAgro Sup, the veterinarian campus of Lyon located today in Marcy-l'Etoile, a special stamp to € 0.58.
It is this beautiful stamp, designed by Sophie Beaujard and engraved by her father Yves Beaujard (the "Father" of the current Marianne definitive stamp), that appears on the FDC souvenir below.
This stamp is thus the first stamp issued by the French Post to include the mention of the two "Beaujard" in its bottom part !

To note that Sophie Beaujard has also designed the FDC postmark above including the slogan "250 years dedicated to the animal and human health".
Sophie Beaujard has explained to me that on her initial design stamp proposal, a horse (Bourgelat was indeed passionate about horse riding and horse medicine) was depicted next to the portrait of Bourgelat but the French Post curiously asked her to replace it by a cow...
Sophie Beaujard has kindly sign this cover, making it a very interesting piece in my collection :-)
During the preview sale of this stamp at Marcy-l'Etoile on May 14, 2011, was held, as part of Vet2011, the World Congress on Veterinary Education. The sale of this stamp has thus generated great enthusiasm and all French Post's philatelic official documents were quickly sold out in the morning. The stamp was also sold out in the afternoon !
But what a pity that this letter above has been once again botched at the sorting office of Lyon Centre (22160A) with this ugly mechanical cancellation :((

Last Minute (October 16th 2011) : After a claim at the main post office of Lyon Bellecour following the sabotage of the First Day Cover published above, Laurent Jacob, postal headmaster, has sent me this new cover above :)

Timbre EUROPA 2011 d'Allemagne

EUROPA 2011 stamp from Germany

A short post to share with you this nice illustrated envelope mailed on May 5, 2011 from the German city of Essen (with an interesting FDC postmark).
Thank you very much Igor :-)

This letter is franked with the EUROPA stamp issued on May 5, 2011 by the Deutsche Post, curiously including a nominal value of € 0.55, the domestic rate (letter up to 20g) rather than a more appropiate European rate...
Igor has completed his postage with a € 0.20 stamp (issued on July 7, 2005), part of the "Flowers" definitive series, a marigold here.

To celebrate the International Year of Forests, the European postal organization PostEurop has wisely chosen the theme of forests ("wald" in German) for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2011.
And I've to say that this topic has fairly inspired the European postal administrations, including Germany with this stamp above, designed by Hans Peter Hoch and Andreas Hoch.
This stamp, including the new EUROPA logo, evokes the meeting of a forest (through these trunks) with light.
It also helps raise awareness of the risks of uncontrolled deforestation, concerning Germany with areas covered by forests that has declined considerably (only one third of the country's surface today).

Série UNESCO aux Nations Unies

UNESCO set from United Nations

After Germany in 2009 (and Spain, France or Italy in previous years), the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has issued on May 5, 2011, a series of stamps devoted to six new sites of UNESCO world heritage.
Nordic countries, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, are this time in the spotlight.
I was very lucky to receive the nice FDC souvenir below including the two stamps (€ 0.62 and € 0.70) issued by the United Nations bureau of Vienna.
Thank you very much Edna :-)

Four other stamps have been issued in this set by the two other UN offices in Geneva and New York. To note that each office had its own FDC cancellation (wood decoration from Urnes Stave church here).

The € 0.62 stamp features the oldest of the 28 Stave churches (of 1,300 originally) registered on the territory of Norway, Urnes Church (12th century), a UNESCO world heritage site since 1979.
Stave churches, made of wood, are characteristic of Middle Ages period in northern Europe, often including remarkable carved decorations and liturgical objects.
The second stamp (€ 0.70) evokes the Struve Arc, a chain of geodetic markers spanning nearly 3000 km from Hammerfest (Norway) to the Black Sea, through 10 countries.
This Arc was originally composed of 258 triangles and 265 main station points which allowed the measurement of a long meridian, from 1816 to 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve.
34 of the initial fixed points were classified as UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, including the northernmost station located in Fuglenes (Hammerfest), depicted on this stamp.
I will speak again very soon about this Struve Arc through a nice stamp series issued this year by Latvia :-)

Timbre EUROPA 2011 d'Åland

EUROPA 2011 stamp from Åland

For the second time (after 2009), the postal administration of the Åland Islands has called upon the watercolorist Anette Gustafsson for the design of its EUROPA stamp issued this year (on May 9, 2011, i.e. the Europe Day).
It is this stamp that appears on the beautiful official FDC below including an illustration also painted by Anette Gustafsson. Thank you very much Liisa :-)
The EUROPA theme of this year, Forests ("Skogar" in Swedish, the official language of this autonomous region of Finland) is ubiquitous on this FDC, including the postmark featuring a conifer cone.

This permanent rate "EUROPA" (perfect timing !) stamp, i.e. € 0.85 at present, was printed in France by Cartor Security Printing (4-colour offset) to 180,000 copies.
It reproduces a watercolor featuring the edge of a forest, 60% of Åland being covered by forests composed of more than 40 varieties of trees, mostly pine in the northern islands, mixed forests on main Åland and deciduous species (mainly ash) in the south.
These forests are inhabited by nearly 700 mooses and 15,000 roe deers but also squirrels, foxes, rodents and many species of birds (black grouse, jays, raptors...).

800 ans de la cathédrale de Reims

800 years of the Cathedral of Reims

On May 9, 2011, the French Post has issued a beautiful souvenir sheet consisting of two round stamps celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Cathedral of Reims.
This sheet has the particularity of being completely engraved, including margins, a real exploit (congratulations to Elsa Catelin, designer and engraver) !
I was very lucky to receive the nice FDC souvenir below sent during the preview sale of this set in Reims on 6 and 7 May 2011. Thank you very much Eric :-)
The FDC postmark, designed by Sarah Lazarevic, evokes the most famous of the 2,302 statues adorning the cathedral, the Smiling Angel.

The architecture and statuary of this major Gothic building in France got its inscription on the UNESCO world heritage list of humanity in 1991.
But this Cathedral Notre-Dame de Reims is mainly known for having been the crowning place of the Kings of France (with some exceptions) from 1027 to 1825 with King Charles X.
But Cathedral's stained glass windows are another invaluable treasure of this place, some of which dating back to the origin of the building, the 13th century.
The two round stamp above thus reproduce some parts of stained glass dating from this period : a King of the Old Testament (€ 0.58), part of the great rose of the western facade and a scene entitled "God damning Cain" (€ 0.95), part of the rose of the north transept ("The Creation").

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 36ème partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XXXVI

I believed that this international stamp series devoted to the protection of polar regions and glaciers, initiated in 2009 by the postal administrations of Finland and Chile, was over...
But at the initiative of the International Bureau of the UPU (Universal Postal Union), this theme has been chosen again in 2011 and many countries (different from those of 2009 I guess ?) have already scheduled some special stamps, including the same symbol, a stylized ice crystal (by Finnish designer Saku Heinänen) !
To note that some countries have already issued stamps devoted to this theme in 2010 (Uzbekistan, Dominican Republic...).

To note that a directive of the UPU concerning this international stamp campaign states that "the greater the number of countries that issue their stamps at the same time, the greater the media coverage...".
It is also recommended issuing a miniature sheet of two stamps with a total face value not exceeding € 2.00. The issue of a single stamp is also possible.
Finally, the theme "Preserve the polar regions and glaciers" should be printed (in the language of the issuing country) in the margins of the souvenir sheet.
The Post of Belarus did not quite meet these guidelines because two stamps have well been issued (face value of BYR 4000, i.e. about € 1.00) but in a souvenir sheet of 6 stamps (3 of each) and each separately in a souvenir sheet of 5 stamps + 1 vignette !
Vladislav Shevardin, the designer of this series, has chosen to feature the effects of global warming in particular in the Arctic (with a Polar Bear) and Antarctica (with King Penguins) regions.
Thank you very much Alexander for this nice cover above, franked with this series, mailed on April 19, 2011 from the capital Minsk :-)

Forêts alluviales en république tchèque

Alluvial forests are characterized by their location on the banks of rivers. The trees that compose them are then closely related to the specific humid characteristics of the soil.
Composed of many species of trees and a unique ecosystem, these alluvial forests also have important functional interest because tree roots help the stabilization of soils and banks, the limitation of the effects of erosion, the purification of river's water, slowing its flow during floods...

For all these reasons, the Czech Post had the very good idea to issue, on May 4, 2011, a very nice stamp (Kč 20.00) devoted to alluvial forests ("lužní lesy" in Czech).
This stamp was issued as part of the EUROPA series having forests for theme this year.
I was lucky to receive the splendid official FDC above concerning this stamp with this dragonfly on the nice and simple postmark issued in Prague :-)
To note that the engraved illustration to the left on the envelope was also designed by the two authors of this stamp : Adolf Absolon and Martin Srb.
This stamp evokes a beautiful landscape of the largest alluvial forest in Czech Republic located at the confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers. Other smaller forests of this type grow for example along the Labe and Cidlina rivers.

Séries UPAEP du Brésil

UPAEP stamps from Brazil

In 1911, 10 countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela) met in Montevideo to create the Union of South American Posts. This organization was then a unique postal area to facilitate the transport of international mail.
27 countries or territories are now part of this Postal Union (a UPU restricted union) renamed UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) after the entry of the two former European colonial powers...

On the same model than the EUROPA issues of CEPT (from 1960 to 1992) and of PostEurop (since 1993), member countries are issuing each year since 1989, stamps having a common theme, including the UPAEP or AMERICA-UPAEP logo.
The theme for 2011 was initially "mailboxes". The postal organization had probably forgotten that it was created 100 years ago as the theme became "Centenary of UPAEP"...
The Brazilian stamp, issued on March 23, 2011, appears in two copies (with FDC cancellation from São Paulo) on the letter above. Thank you very much Marcelo :-)
This stamp, designed by Míriam Guimarães, includes the UPAEP logo, the words "100 years of union of cultures" and an evocation of American and European continents with the common colors of national flags of UPAEP countries : yellow, blue, green and red.

Marcelo was kind enough to send me also, on April 27, 2011, the two covers above and below including the UPAEP series issued by Brazil in 2010 and 2009 !
The UPAEP theme chosen for the year 2010 was "National Symbols", hence the interesting set of four stamps, issued on September 7, 2010, depicting the arms (including the date of November 15, 1889 when the Republic was proclaimed), the national flag (including the motto "Order and Progress"), the seal and the national anthem (adopted in 1922) of the Federative Republic of Brazil.
A law of September 1, 1971 is governing the form and presentation of these patriotic elements in Brazil.

The series of four UPAEP stamps issued on August 18, 2009, is included on the nice FDC above. These four stamps, designed by Cecília Langer, are devoted to the theme "Popular Games" with an evocation of playing marbles ("Bola-de-gude"), dominoes, a checkers game board and a racket game ("Frescobol").
These stamps have the particularity of having been printed with a transparent varnish on some parts !
Finally, to note that some member countries do not issue UPAEP stamps any more (USA, Haiti...) and some others (Canada), if I'm not wrong, have never issued any UPAEP stamps.
Upcoming themes chosen by UPAEP are "Myths and Legends" in 2012 and "Fight against Discrimination" in 2013.

Série EUROPA 2011 de Moldavie

EUROPA 2011 stamps from Moldova

Merci beaucoup Sergio :-)
The Post of Moldova has released, on May 7, 2011, its new series of two stamps as part of the EUROPA issues devoted to Forests ("Păduri" in Moldovan) this year, International Year of Forests oblige !
Moldova has demonstrated teaching skills and originality (unusual format, notches) concerning the production of this series, designed by Vitaliu Pogolşa.
I was very lucky to receive the official FDC (printing run : 500 copies only !) below issued in Chişinău, including the two stamps and an illustration (also by Vitaliu Pogolşa) symbolizing the tree as a source of breathing and living.
Thank you very much Sergio :-)

This was not always the case in previous years but the Moldovan Post has this time included on this new series (and also on the cover and the FDC cancellation) the new logo EUROPA, preceded by this stylized mailbox !
To note that these two stamps were each issued in sheet of 10 stamps and also in a mixed booklet of 6 stamps (3 of each).
Printing run of the stamp to L 4.20 : 115,000.
Printing run of the stamp to L 5.40 : 75,000.
Printing run of the booklet : 18,000.

Sergio has been kind enough to include in his letter the two maxicards above and below, designed from photographs by A. Kornienko, each including one of the two stamps of this series.
The first one above (circulation : 1,800), with the mention "Moldova - My country !" top right, includes the stamp to L 4.20 evoking a leaf and the prevention against forest fires in order to preserve the habitat of some animal species like deer here.

The second maxicard above (circulation : 1,200) includes the stamp to L 5.40 issued to increase public awareness of the protection of forests and illegal logging of trees in particular, that disturbs the wildlife of these ecosystems, like the owl here for example.
Forests cover just over 10% of the territory of Moldova, with a majority of species of deciduous trees (mainly oaks) and very few coniferous forests (2%).

Recensement économique en Algérie

Economic census in Algeria

Merci beaucoup Omar :-)
How the Algerian Post had to do to evoke on a stamp a not really attractive theme : the first economic census organized in 2011 in the country ?
The Post was probably not very inspired since it has simply chosen to reproduce an illustration produced by the National Office for Statistics (hence the mention "ONS" in the lower right margin of the stamp) evoking a map of Algeria including various aspects of country's economy.
Three copies of this same stamp (15 Dinars) are included on the nice cover below mailed on April 16, 2011 from Imama (Tlemcen). Thank you very much Omar :-)

To note also the two FDC postmarks, always issued with the same format, dated April 12, 2011 (general sale on April 14, 2011) also released in Tlemcen.
This first economic census since independence of Algeria has to allow public authorities to have detailed statistics on all economic entities (excluding agriculture).
This census is organized in two phases : the firstone, held right now, is about the precise enumeration of the economic entities in order to constitute a companies' database.
The second phase will take place later this year and will aim to collect physical and accounting datas concerning a sample of companies.
To note that some Algerian companies are threatening not to participate in this census fearing it may be used to verify their accounts...

Bobík le cochon en république tchèque

A short post to share with you the latest philatelic items received in the nice letter sent to me by the Czech Post published on this blog on May 7, 2011 !
After a stamp devoted to Pind'a the Rabbit issued on February 9, 2011, the Czech Post has issued on May 4, 2011, its fifth and last stamp depicting a character from the comic strip "Čtyřlístek" by famous Czech cartoonist Jaroslav Němeček.

This last stamp, appearing on the official FDC above, is devoted to Bobík the pig, depicted seated on the grass playing guitar and singing a love song...
Like its predecessor, this stamp includes the permanent 'A' rate corresponding to the price of an ordinary letter up to 50 g in domestic service (currently CZK 10.00).
To note that this stamp includes the year "2010" at the bottom right ?? Its official issue has then been postponed to 2011 without reissuing the stock already printed in 2010...

This stamp was issued in a booklet of 10 self-adhesive stamps, like the one above that I also had the chance to receive :-)
To note that (it's the same on the prepaid postcards issued regularly by the Czech Post) a hologram, including the horn of the Post's logo, is included in the top left. Why exactly ??

As with previous booklets issued in this series, the four main characters of Čtyřlístek (Pind'a the rabbit, Bobík the pig, Myšpulín the cat and Fifinka the missy dog) are again featured on the colorful cover of this booklet above.

Révolution du peuple en Tunisie

People's Revolution in Tunisia

I am doubly happy today : I publish on this blog my first ever letter received from Tunisia and the theme of the series of stamps below is really historic because it concerns what was called "Jasmine Revolution" in our western countries.
Thank you very much Nabil for this cover mailed on April 21, 2011 from the town of Nabeul, located on the northeastern coast of the country :-)
This series, designed by three different artists (Leila Allagui, Sihem Chaabene and Abdelmajid Ayed), was issued on March 25, 2011 and printed on March 19, 2011 according to the date included on the top margin of the stamp at 1,350 millimes below.

The stamp at 600 millimes evokes the Revolution of the Dignity and the date of January 14, 2011 marking the end of the Ben Ali regime after more than four weeks of demonstrations across the country demanding the end of corruption and more democracy, social rights, freedom...
This stamp features a portrait of martyr Mohammed Bouazizi, a young fruits and vegetables street vendor who set himself on fire on December 17, 2010 in the town of Sidi Bouzid to protest against deteriorating social conditions and denied the contempt of the authorities towards the Tunisian youth.
It's his act that was at the origin of this Revolution of the Liberty (1,350 millimes stamp), this People's Revolution (250 millimes stamp including the clock tower of Tunis) or this Youth Revolution (390 millimes stamp).
More than 200 Tunisians (and 1,200 serious injuries) have sacrificed their lives for this revolution, which hopefully will allow many other people to break free and live in peace and democracy...

Monde et or verts en Estonie

Green World and Green Gold in Estonia

Merci beaucoup Pirjo :-)
Nearly half the territory of Estonia is covered with forests, the largest being located in central and north-eastern parts of the country.
The Estonian Post was so certainly at ease with this theme of Forests ("mets" in Estonian), the theme chosen this year by PostEurop for the EUROPA stamp series.
Two beautiful stamps (€ 0.58) were then designed by Vladimir Taiger, printed at 75,000 copies each.
I was fortunate to receive the official FDC below, issued on April 28, 2011, including this series. Thank you very much Pirjo :-)

The stamp above to the left includes the words "Roheline Maailm" ("Green World") and symbolizes the rich and fragile ecosystem of forests and also the animal species living there, like the elk here, the biggest mammal living in the country.
The other stamp entitled "Roheline Kuld" ("Green Gold") evokes the forests as a major economic (renewable) resource through the wood industry and its transformation (heating, furniture...).
To note that the Estonian Post has used the new EUROPA logo in force since that year and that, since January 1, 2011, the nominal values are only mentioned in Euros.

Oeuvres d'Alfons Mucha en république tchèque

As mentioned yesterday, I had the chance to receive several philatelic interest in this beautiful cover sent by the Czech Post !
I wanted to share with you today the two very nice picture prepaid postcards below, issued on June 23, 2010 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famous Czech painter and illustrator Alfons Mucha (1860-1939).
The Czech Post had previously issued, one month before (May 26, 2010), a nice set of two self-adhesive stamps devoted to Mucha, already mentioned on this blog.

The first card above is used for priority mail up to 20g to European countries (permanent rate "E", CZK 20.00 now).
The stamp evokes a poster created by Mucha in 1896 at the occasion of the "Salon des Cent", a literary and art exhibition held in Paris, organized by "La Plume", a famous literary journal of the Belle Epoque.

The other side of this card reproduces the upper part of a Mucha's lithograph dating from 1902, entitled "Morning Star".

The stamp included on the second card above reproduces a detail of the left part of a diptych by Mucha dating from 1899, entitled "The Primrose" (the right part being entitled "The Feather").
This card is valid for priority mail up to 20g to non-European countries (permanent rate "Z", CZK 21.00 now).
To note, like on the first card, the presence at the top (under the logo of the Czech Post) of a anti-copying's hologram.
The words "CESKA POSTA - PTC - 2010" are also included in micro-letters at the bottom left of the stamp.

The other side above reproduces a part of the poster designed by Mucha in 1896 to announce an article devoted to the French actress Sarah Bernhardt published in the literary journal "La Plume" mentioned higher up in this article.

Chiens de race en France

Pedigree dogs in France

After butterflies in 2010, the French Post has issued this year (on general sale on May 2, 2011) a new "Nature" series devoted this time to different breeds of dogs.
Probably to remember that French households have nearly 10 million pet dogs including 170,000 issued from pure breeds listed in the French Origin Book (LOF).
1,650,000 souvenir sheets (composed of 4 stamps) and 4.7 million of "Labrador" stamps have been issued for this occasion.
I was lucky to receive this souvenir sheet on the pretty FDC souvenir below with a postmark from Paris, issued at the "Carré d'Encre". Thank you very much Roland :-)
I really like this cancellation, designed by Jean-Paul Cousin, with its dog's dish shape !

This is the wildlife illustrator André Boos, who has designed, for the first time, this series (layout by Bruno Ghiringhelli).
The four stamps on this sheet are depicting some breeds of dogs belonging to 4 of the 10 distinct groups, identified in the LOF and defined by the World Canine Organisation ("Fédération Cynologique Internationale" or FCI in French) : the Yorkshire (€ 0.95) for the group of Terriers, the Labrador Retriever (€ 0.58) for the group of retrievers, flushing and water dogs, the German Shepherd (€ 0.58) for the group of sheep dogs and the Poodle (€ 0.75) for the group of companion and toy dogs.
The other breeds appearing in the margins of this sheet : Dalmatian, Golden retriever, Jack Russell and Bull Terrier.
To note that the First Day of Issue of this series also took place on 28 and 29 April 2011 at the headquarters of the Société Centrale Canine (SCC), the French Kennel Club, in Aubervilliers (Parisian region).
This stamp issue is indeed also reminding us that the SCC, which is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, and the FCI, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2011, will host the World Dog Show in Paris from 7 to 10 July 2011, a first for 37 years !

2011 : l'année des Rožmberk en république tchèque

Once again, I'd like to warmly thank the Czech Post (Česká pošta) for this new registered letter mailed on May 2, 2011 from the capital Prague !
Many philatelic items were again attached to this letter. I'm sharing some of them today, the others will follow in the coming days :-)
But let's start with the postage of this letter : the two stamps in the upper right are the lower part of the beautiful souvenir sheet of four stamps, issued on September 1, 2010, devoted to the biosphere reserve of the lower valley of the Morava, located in south-eastern country.

I've already widely mentioned this souvenir sheet on this blog and especially in one of my recent posts devoted the Czech Republic in which I explained that one of the four stamps of this sheet was designated most beautiful Czech stamp issued in 2010 !
I've also already written about the two definitive stamps above, issued on February 23, 2011, depicting different elements of traditional architecture in the country.
The last stamp in the upper left, issued on May 6, 2009, commemorates the 750th anniversary of the founding of the Cistercian monastery of Vyšší Brod, the southernmost municipality in the country.
This monastery (one of the best preserved of the country), with its church of the Virgin Mary depicted on the stamp, was founded in 1259 by the aristocratic family of Rožmberk, who had a major influence on this whole region of Southern Bohemia until 1611...

The transition is evident between this last stamp referring to the monastery of Vyšší Brod and the year 2011 declared as the year of the Rožmberks (or Rosenberg) in Czech Republic !
We indeed commemorate this year the 400th anniversary of the end of the dynasty of the Rožmberk family who has provided the economic and cultural prosperity of the region of South Bohemia.
For 10 generations, the Rožmberk members were all buried in the crypt of the convent of Vyšší Brod. This powerful aristocratic family has built many castles and monasteries but has also shaped several towns like Český Krumlov.
To celebrate this Year of the Rožmberks, the Czech Post has issued on March 9, 2011, the stamp above featuring the last two members of this family, the brothers Petr Vok and Vilém.
To note the presence of this 5 petals rose flower, the arms of the Rožmberk family, both on the stamp and the FDC cancellation.

I was also very lucky to receive the souvenir sheet above (designed by Oldřich Kulhánek and engraved by Miloš Ondráček), with a simple hand postmark of the date of issue.
The margins of this sheet evoke prosperity but also arts, sciences or literature that the two brothers Petr Vok and Vilém of Rožmberk had widely encouraged.
The Order of the Golden Fleece (the highest imperial order granted to Catholic aristocrats), received by Vilém of Rožmberk, is also included in the lower margin on this awesome sheet !

P'tites bêtes britanniques

Insects in UK

The Royal Mail has issued on April 15, 2008, a beautiful and interesting series of 10 stamps devoted to different insect species, endangered in the country and now in recovery.
Six se-tenant stamps part of this series are included on the nice letter below mailed on April 28, 2011 from the city of Manchester. Thank you very much Radek :-)
To note the advertising slogan about the stamps issued by the Royal Mail to mark the recent wedding of Prince William and Miss Kate Middleton...

Once again, the design of this series is terribly simple and effective : each insect species is well highlighted on a white background.
The different insects shown above are from top to bottom and from left to right: a Red-barbed Ant (Formica rufibarbis), a Barberry Carpet Moth (Pareulype Berberata), a Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus), a Noble Chafer (Gnorimus nobilis), a Purbeck Mason Wasp (Pseudepipona herrichii) and a Silver-spotted Skipper (Hesperia comma).
