Le 26 juillet 2018, les administrations postales d'Afrique du Sud et d'Inde ont mis en circulation un bloc-feuillet commun (2 timbres) consacré à 2 anniversaires : les 100 ans de la naissance de Nelson Mandela et les 125 ans de l'incident de la gare de Pietermaritzburg impliquant alors le jeune Mahatma Gandhi.
La version sud-africaine de ce bloc-feuillet (timbres au tarif permanent "Standard Postage") figure sur cette lettre envoyée le 10 décembre 2019 depuis la ville du Cap, la capitale législative du pays. Merci beaucoup Terence !
A noter ces surprenants TADs avec mention "Paquebot" signifiant que cette lettre a normalement été postée à bord d'un navire ne possédant pas de bureau de poste officiel. Dans les eaux internationales, les plis postés doivent alors être affranchis avec des timbres émis par le pavillon du bateau. Ces plis sont ensuite remis à n'importe quel bureau de poste localisé dans un port, sans surcharge tarifaire...
On July 26, 2018, the postal administrations of South Africa and India put into circulation a joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps) dedicated to two anniversaries: the 100 years of the birth of Nelson Mandela and the 125 years of the Pietermaritzburg station incident then involving young Mahatma Gandhi.
The South African version of this souvenir sheet (Permanent rate "Standard Postage" stamps) was used on this letter sent on December 10, 2019 from Cape Town, the country's legislative capital. Thank you very much Terence!
To note these surprising postmarks with mention "Paquebot" meaning that this letter was normally posted on board a ship not having an official post office. In international waters, mails have to be franked with stamps issued by the vessel's flag. These mails are then delivered to any post office located in a port without tariff surcharge ...
Entre 1893 et 1915, le jeune avocat Gandhi séjourna en Afrique du Sud où il pris conscience des actions pour la dignité humaine et la justice sociale, une méthode de désobéissance civile non-violente, en organisant la lutte de la communauté indienne pour ses droits civiques.
Cet incident de la gare de Pietermaritzburg (capitale de la province du KwaZulu-Natal) eut lieu en 1893 lorsque Gandhi effectuait un trajet entre Durban et Pretoria.
Gandhi y fut en effet expulsé d'un train dans lequel il voyageait parce qu'il n'était pas blanc et qu'il voyageait en première classe.
En étant témoin direct de l'intolérance, du racisme, des préjugés et de l'injustice contre les indiens d'Afrique du Sud, Gandhi commenca à réfléchir au statut de son peuple et à sa propre place dans la société.
Les 2 timbres de ce bloc-feuillet (gare de Pietermaritzburg dans le fond) représentent des portraits de Gandhi et de Mandela.
A noter que la poste indienne a émis un bloc-feuillet similaire mais presque 4 fois plus grand que ce bloc-feuillet d'Afrique du Sud !
Between 1893 and 1915, the young lawyer Gandhi stayed in South Africa where he became aware of actions for human dignity and social justice, a method of non-violent civil disobedience, by organizing the struggle of the Indian community for their civil rights.
This incident at Pietermaritzburg railway station (the capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal) took place in 1893 when Gandhi was making a journey between Durban and Pretoria.
Gandhi was indeed expelled from a train in which he was traveling because he was not white and was traveling in first class.
By directly witnessing intolerance, racism, prejudice and injustice against the Indians of South Africa, Gandhi began to think about the status of his people and their own place in society.
The two stamps in this souvenir sheet (Pietermaritzburg station in the background) represent portraits of Gandhi and Mandela.
To note that the Indian Post issued a similar souvenir sheet but almost 4 times larger than this souvenir sheet from South Africa!
