Guillaume Tell est un héros des mythes fondateurs de la Suisse qui, au 16ème siècle, personnifiait le courage, avait la fonction de rassemblement et participait à l'idéal d'indépendance de la Confédération vis-à-vis du Saint-Empire romain germanique.
Au 19ème siècle, Guillaume Tell devient le symbole légendaire d'une identité nationale ancestrale.
Il aurait vécu dans le canton d'Uri au début du 14ème siècle et se serait rebellé contre Hermann Gessler, bailli impérial de Schwyz et Uri, qui le défia alors de tirer un carreau d'arbalète dans une pomme posée sur la tête de son fils. Guillaume Tell réussit son exploit. Par la suite, Tell tue Gessler d'un carreau d'arbalète en plein cœur.
Ce récit a donné lieu à de nombreuses controverses historiques portant sur son authenticité et il s'agit plus d'un mythe que d'une légende... 
William Tell is a hero of the founding myths of Switzerland who, in the 16th century, personified courage, had the function of gathering and participated in the ideal of independence of the Confederation vis-à-vis the Holy Roman Empire.
In the 19th century, William Tell became the legendary symbol of an ancestral national identity.
He would have lived in the canton of Uri at the beginning of the 14th century and would have rebelled against Hermann Gessler, imperial bailiff of Schwyz and Uri, who then challenged him to fire a crossbow bolt into an apple placed on the head of his son. William Tell succeeded in his feat. Subsequently, Tell killed Gessler with a crossbow bolt shooted in the heart.
This story has given rise to many historical controversies concerning its authenticity and it is more of a myth than a legend...

 

La poste suisse a choisi d'illustrer ce mythe de Guillaume Tell sur sa série EUROPA (2 timbres) émise le 5 mai 2022, consacrée cette année aux mythes et légendes.
Ces 2 timbres se-tenant (1,10 CHF chacun), représentant respectivement Guillaume Tell avec son arbalète et la pomme transpercée, conçus par la jeune illustratrice et graphiste Elena Knecht et imprimés dans une même feuille de 16 timbres (8 de chaque), ont été utilisés sur cette lettre envoyée depuis Lugano à l'occasion de l'exposition universelle de philatélie "Helvetia 2022" organisée du 18 au 22 mai 2022. Merci beaucoup Jürgen ! 
Cette exposition célébrait les 160 ans de l'Helvetia assise, le légendaire timbre-poste émis pour la première fois en 1862, qui inaugura non seulement la mention "Helvetia", mais fut aussi le premier timbre dentelé de Suisse. Ce timbre a été conçu par Johann Adam Ries (1813-1889), médailliste, graveur de pièces et graphiste bavarois. 
Le TAD appliqué sur cette enveloppe a été conçu à partir d'une médaille représentant le profil de Johann Adam Ries, conçue par lui-même vers 1880.
The Swiss Post has chosen to illustrate this myth of William Tell on its EUROPA series (2 stamps) issued on May 5, 2022, devoted this year to Stories and myths.
These two se-tenant stamps (1.10 CHF each), representing respectively William Tell with his crossbow and the pierced apple, designed by the young illustrator and graphic artist Elena Knecht and printed in the same sheet of 16 stamps (8 of each), have been used on this cover sent from Lugano on the occasion of the universal philatelic exhibition "Helvetia 2022" organized from May 18 to 22, 2022. This exhibition celebrated 160 years of the "seated Helvetia", the legendary postage stamp first issued in 1862, which not only inaugurated the mention "Helvetia", but was also the first perforated stamp in Switzerland. This stamp was designed by Johann Adam Ries (1813-1889), Bavarian medalist, coin engraver and graphic designer.
The postmark applied on this envelope was designed from a medal representing the profile of Johann Adam Ries, designed by himself around 1880.
