Les relations diplomatiques entre les Maldives et la Thaïlande ont été officiellement établies le 21 juin 1979. Des relations économiques existent toutefois entre ces 2 pays depuis plus longtemps, la Thaïlande étant l'un des principaux partenaires commerciaux des Maldives.
Plus de 50% des exportations des Maldives (principalement du poisson congelé) sont destinées à la Thaïlande, la Thaïlande exportant une grande variété de produits (véhicules à moteur, fruits, textile...) vers les Maldives.
Le 21 juin 2019, les administrations postales des 2 pays ont émis un spectaculaire bloc-feuillet commun (8 timbres) consacré au 40ème anniversaire de ces relations diplomatiques, illustrant 4 thématiques (fruits, fleurs nationales, bateaux de pêche et parcs marins).
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Thailand were officially established on June 21, 1979. However, economic relations have existed between these two countries for a longer time, Thailand being one of the Maldives' main trading partners.
More than 50% of Maldives exports (mainly frozen fish) are destined for Thailand, Thailand exporting a wide variety of products (motor vehicles, fruits, textiles ...) to the Maldives.
On June 21, 2019, the postal administrations of the two countries issued a spectacular joint souvenir sheet (8 stamps) dedicated to the 40th anniversary of these diplomatic relations, illustrating 4 themes (fruits, national flowers, fishing boats and marine parks).
La version thaïlandaise de ce bloc-feuillet (timbres à 3 baht) figure sur cette folie lettre envoyée le 2 janvier 2020 (2020 correspondant à l'année 2563 dans le calendrier bouddhiste) depuis le bureau postal de Ratthakan (district de Hat Yai, province de Songkhla), situé dans le sud du pays. Parmi ces timbres, les fleurs nationales respectives, la rose Rosa polyantha ("Finifenmaa") pour les Maldives et les fleurs jaunes de canéficier pour la Thaïlande et des fruits emblématiques, la noix de coco et le durian, connu pour son goût particulier et sa forte odeur.
Un bateau de pêche traditionnel thaïlandais est également représenté, ainsi qu'un bateau utilisé aux Maldives pour la pêche au thon de façon durable, sans filet, à la ligne.
Les 2 derniers timbres sont consacrés à des vues aériennes d'atolls et archipels des 2 pays, un îlot isolé (non identifié) aux Maldives et une spectaculaire vue des îles du parc national marin de Mu Ko Ang Thong situé dans le golfe de Thaïlande (sud du pays), créé en 1980.
The Thai version of this souvenir sheet (eight 3 Baht stamps) is present on this amazing cover sent on January 2, 2020 (2020 corresponding to the year 2563 in the Buddhist calendar) from the Ratthakan postal office (Hat Yai district, Songkhla province), located in the south of the country. Among these stamps, the respective national flowers, the Rosa polyantha pink rose ("Finifenmaa") for the Maldives and the yellow flowers of the golden rain tree for Thailand and emblematic fruits, coconut and durian, known for its particular taste and its strong smell.
A traditional Thai fishing boat is also featured, as well as a boat used in the Maldives for pole and line tuna fishing in a sustainable way, without net.
The last two stamps are devoted to aerial views of atolls and archipelagos of the 2 countries, an isolated islet (unidentified) in the Maldives and a spectacular view of the islands of the Mu Ko Ang Thong national marine park located in the Gulf of Thailand (south of the country), created in 1980.
