La République de Lettonie et les États-Unis célèbrent en 2022 le centenaire de leurs relations diplomatiques. Le 28 juillet 1922, les États-Unis ont en effet officiellement reconnu de jure la République souveraine de Lettonie.
La première déclaration d'indépendance de la Lettonie est l'acte fondateur de la république de Lettonie en date du 18 novembre 1918, dans un contexte de retrait de la Russie et l'avancée des troupes allemandes.
Après la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale en novembre 1918, l'Allemagne retira ses troupes de Lettonie et transmit formellement ses pouvoirs au gouvernement provisoire letton. L'invasion des bolcheviks russes et la guerre d'indépendance de la Lettonie suivit.
Comme les 2 autres pays baltes, la république de Lettonie obtint une reconnaissance internationale en devenant membre de la Société des Nations en 1921. 
The Republic of Latvia and the United States celebrate in 2022 the centenary of their diplomatic relations. On July 28, 1922, the United States officially recognized de jure the sovereign Republic of Latvia.
Latvia's first declaration of independence is the founding act of the Republic of Latvia dated November 18, 1918, in the context of the withdrawal of Russia and the advance of German troops.
After the end of World War I in November 1918, Germany withdrew its troops from Latvia and formally handed over its powers to the Provisional Latvian Government. The invasion of the Russian Bolsheviks and the Latvian War of Independence followed.
Like the other two Baltic countries, the Republic of Latvia obtained international recognition by becoming a member of the League of Nations in 1921.

 

Les États-Unis n'ont ensuite jamais reconnu l'annexion forcée de la Lettonie par l'Union soviétique à partir de 1944. L'ambassade de Lettonie à Washington fut la seule ambassade de ce pays à l'étranger, qui a poursuivi ses opérations tout au long de l'occupation de la Lettonie, continuant à représenter l'État letton existant de jure, maintenant inchangé le statut juridique international de la Lettonie et luttant pour le rétablissement de l'indépendance.
Pour célébrer ce 100ème anniversaire des relations diplomatiques, la poste lettone a mis en circulation, le 28 juillet 2022, un timbre représentant simplement les drapeaux des 2 pays.
Ce timbre (1,98€, tirage : 50000), conçu par l'artiste estonien Indrek Ilves et imprimé en feuillet de 10 timbres, est présent sur ce pli Premier Jour avec TAD de Riga. Merci beaucoup Vera !
Aujourd'hui, la Lettonie et les États-Unis sont unis pour défendre les valeurs démocratiques et l'ordre mondial, et entretiennent d'excellentes relations en tant que proches alliés au sein de l'OTAN.
A noter que la poste d'Estonie a également émis cette année un timbre consacré au 100ème anniversaire des relations diplomatiques avec les États-Unis. Aucun timbre similaire du coté lituanien... 

The United States then never recognized the forced annexation of Latvia by the Soviet Union from 1944. The Latvian embassy in Washington was the only embassy of this country abroad, which continued its operations throughout the occupation of Latvia, continuing to represent the existing de jure Latvian state, maintaining Latvia's international legal status unchanged, and fighting for the restoration of independence.

To celebrate this 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the Latvian Post put into circulation, on July 28, 2022, a stamp simply representing the flags of the two countries.

This stamp (€1.98, print run: 50,000), designed by the Estonian artist Indrek Ilves and printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps, is present on this First Day cover with postmark from Riga. Thank you very much Vera!

Today, Latvia and the United States stand united in defense of democratic values ​​and the global order, and enjoy excellent relations as close allies in NATO.
