Bloc-feuillet "150 ans de l'opéra de Bizet - Carmen" sur FDC de France
Il y a 150 ans, le 3 mars 1875, était créé à l'Opéra Comique à Paris l'un des opéras les plus joués au monde. Mais peut-on imaginer que Carmen, chef d'œuvre lyrique absolu de Georges Bizet (1838-1875) fut alors détesté par le public, choqué par cette bohémienne, une sorcière qui défie les hommes. Pour certains, la religion, la morale et l'armée étaient écornées.
Le compositeur n'a jamais vécu le succès de son ultime ouvrage : il est mort le 3 juin 1875, au soir de la 33ème représentation, avant que Carmen ne devienne un mythe...
Le succès ne viendra qu'à partir du 2 janvier 1878, grâce à l'interprétation à Bruxelles de Minnie Hauk. Sa manière de chanter très intense entraîne un succès immédiat et est à l'origine de la renommée durable de l'opéra qui n'avait pas marqué les esprits lors de sa création. Aujourd'hui, Carmen est l'un des opéras les plus joués au monde.
Cet opéra s'inspire d'une nouvelle de Prosper Mérimée. Le livret est écrit par Ludovic Halévy et Henri Meilhac et met en scène quatre personnages principaux : Carmen, une bohémienne et cigarière, le brigadier Don José qu'elle séduit alors qu'elle est placée sous sa garde après une altercation, Micaëla, la jeune Navarraise à laquelle il devait être fiancé, et le toréador Escamillo pour lequel Carmen choisit d'abandonner don José.
One hundred and fifty years ago, on March 3, 1875, one of the most performed operas in the world premiered at the Opéra Comique in Paris. But can anyone imagine that Carmen, the absolute lyrical masterpiece by Georges Bizet (1838-1875), was so hated by the public at the time, shocked by this gypsy, a witch who defies men. For some, religion, morality, and the army were undermined.
The composer never experienced the success of his final work: he died on June 3, 1875, on the evening of the 33rd performance, before Carmen had become a legend...
Success only came on January 2, 1878, thanks to Minnie Hauk's performance in Brussels. Her intense singing brought immediate success and is the source of the lasting fame of the opera, which had not made a lasting impression at its premiere. Today, Carmen is one of the most performed operas in the world.
This opera is inspired by a short story by Prosper Mérimée. The libretto was written by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac and features four main characters: Carmen, a gypsy cigar maker, the brigadier Don José, whom she seduces while in his custody after an altercation, Micaëla, the young Navarrese woman to whom he was supposed to be engaged, and the toreador Escamillo, for whom Carmen chooses to abandon Don José.
Teinté d'orientalisme, le récit aboutit au meurtre passionnel de Carmen par son amant malheureux et est émaillé d'airs célèbres ("L'amour est un oiseau rebelle", la séguedille, l'air du Toréador...).
Le 31 mars 2025 (vente générale), la poste française a mis en circulation un joli bloc-feuillet consacré au 150ème anniversaire de la création de cet opéra Carmen.
Ce bloc-feuillet (2,10€, tirage : 330000), créé et gravé par Sarah Lazarevic, a été utilisé sur la lettre ci-dessus avec TAD Premier Jour (signature de Georges Bizet) de Paris du 27 mars 2025. Merci beaucoup André !

Le timbre a été conçu à partir d'une photographie de l'actrice suédoise Ebon Strandin (1894-1977) dans ce rôle de Carmen en 1922, Don José figurant dans la marge à droite, avec la célèbre cathédrale de Séville entre les 2 personnages.
A noter qu'un timbre rendant hommage au compositeur Georges Bizet avait été émis en 1960, avec présence d'un livret évoquant cet opéra Carmen.
With a touch of orientalism, the story culminates in the murder of Carmen by her unfortunate lover and is interspersed with famous arias ("Love is a rebel bird," the seguedilla, the aria of the Toreador, etc.).
On March 31, 2025 (general sale), the French Post released a beautiful souvenir sheet dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the premiere of this opera Carmen.
This souvenir sheet (€2.10, print run: 330,000), designed and engraved by Sarah Lazarevic, was used on the above cover with First Day cancellation (Georges Bizet's signature) from Paris on March 27, 2025. Thank you very much, André!

The stamp was designed based on a photograph of Swedish actress Ebon Strandin (1894-1977) in the role of Carmen in 1922, with Don José depicted in the right margin, with the famous Seville Cathedral between the two figures.
To note that a stamp paying tribute to composer Georges Bizet was issued in 1960, featuring a libretto depicting the opera Carmen.
